----
A new recruit into the Soul Reaper division, Rukia's encounter with Ichigo in his bedroom while Hollow-hunting is the trigger for the story. After sustaining injuries in a fight with an invading Hollow, she transfers her power to Ichigo to protect his family. She forces him to act as a Soul Reaper in her stead until she is hauled back to Soul Society for illegally empowering Ichigo.
When Ichigo and his friends come to her rescue, Rukia's arrest is revealed to have been made under false pretenses and she's reinstated as a Soul Reaper, now assisting Ichigo in a more active role.

Sarcastic, aggressive, and convinced of her own artistic merit, Rukia is proficient at kidou and a powerful fighter. Far too talented for her low military rank, she's eventually promoted to 13th Division lieutenant. Her snow-white zanpakuto, '''''Sode no Shirayuki''''', is the most beautiful in the whole of Soul Society. It lowers the temperature of her body at will, even to absolute zero, allowing her to freeze everything she touches or fight with waves and pillars of ice. Her Bankai, '''''Hakka no Togame''''', turns her to solid ice and unleashes a powerful, blinding white explosion that instantly freezes everything within the blast radius.

Rukia plays a special role in the third ''Bleach'' movie, ''Anime/BleachFadeToBlack'', in which she is rendered amnesic by the antagonists and [[Characters/BleachMovieOnly gains a Hollowfied form called Dark Rukia]].
----
* ActionGirl: Rukia's an effective hand-to-hand fighter and kido user, as well as highly self-reliant, even without her Soul Reaper powers.
* ActionMom: Rukia is still very much an active Soul Reaper and captain of Squad 13 even while being the mother of Ichika. She also jokingly chides Ichigo for letting Orihime be a traditional housewife instead of his equal.
* ActionSurvivor: At the beginning of the story, as a consequence of transferring her power to Ichigo, Rukia found herself borderline depowered. This did ''not'' translate on her automatically leaving everything to Ichigo, as she insisted on guiding him and doing her best to help him fight and defend herself.
* AlmightyJanitor: Despite being TheHeroine and an overall skilled fighter, Rukia is - for roughly three quarters of the series - a rank and file Soul Reaper who didn't even qualify for a seated officer position. {{Justified}} as Byakuya pulled some strings to help ensure she didn't get ranked as one out of his desire to protect her. After the timeskip, she is Squad 13's new Lieutenant as a sign of where she truly ranks in her squad.
* AnimalMotifs: Rabbits. Rukia doodles rabbits when trying to explain things with visuals and her mod soul makes bouncing noises.
* ArtShift: Whenever Rukia tries to explain things using poorly-drawn bunnies and other animals.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Her Bankai, Hakka no Togame, amounts to a FantasticNuke using a powerful burst of ice to cut her foe, letting her kill Äs Nödt in one hit without any means to fight back. However, her Bankai requires her to dethaw her body after using it, forcing her to remain still and not move or else she could break her body. As a result, the only time she used it in the manga resulted in her being forced to be protected by Byakuya until she was safe, and she never gets the chance to use it again after. Given Bankai require years of fine-tuning once they're attained, it's not unusual that Rukia's would be so hazardous mere days after attaining one, leaving it open for her to potentially get around this drawback with training in the future.
* BabiesEverAfter: The epilogue takes place ten years in the future, and depicts [[spoiler:Rukia and Renji as married with a daughter]].
* BadassAdorable: Rukia has the appearance of a young girl, but she claims to be a century and a half old and has spent that time fighting for survival and training as a soldier. As such while she is small and cute, her competence level is that of a high-ranked officer, and she's eventually permitted to take over as lieutenant of her squad and is ultimately promoted to the rank of Captain.
* BarefootPoverty: While living in the poverty-stricken 78th district Rukia - like other residents of the district - has no access to luxuries such as footwear.
* BattleCouple: Once Rukia gets her powers back she accompanies her eventual husband Renji on his adventures.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Subverted. While Rukia and Ichigo have an acerbic relationship that belies their tight bond, she would eventually marry Renji, with whom she's much more laid-back.
* BerserkButton:
** Mocking her drawings is a good way to elicit a violent response out of her. Ichigo is usually the one to press it, even when invoking the "If you don't have anything nice to say" rule.
** Seeing Ichigo act [[HeroicBSOD distraught]] is a serious one to her; as such she WILL snap him out of it by any [[DopeSlap means]] [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan necessary]].
* BeyondTheImpossible: After the time-skip, Rukia reveals she's learned how to break the laws of physics. After Royal Guard training, her Zanpakuto is capable of bringing her body temperature down to Absolute Zero. Not only is it technically impossible to reach Absolute Zero, she can keep functioning for a very short time while in that state. She explains that she actually classifies as being dead even when using her Shikai level of power. Her Bankai is so dangerous that, when it de-activates, the thawing of her body as the power ebbs away and her life flows back could actually kill her if she de-powers too quickly.
* BigBrotherWorship: Byakuya may be aloof, but Rukia has a great deal of respect for him.
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Ichigo: In the first two arcs, Ichigo and Rukia experience intense guilt over their inability to save individuals from powerful hollows. For Ichigo, his failure to rescue his mother weighs heavily on him, and for Rukia, having to kill her commanding officer after he was taken over by a hollow leaves her feeling responsible. During the Soul Society arc, Rukia also feels guilty about Ichigo's supposed death at the hands of Byakuya and pleads with Yamamoto to spare Ichigo and his friends during their rescue mission to prevent her execution as her last request. Meanwhile, Ichigo's guilt stems from the fact that Rukia is facing execution for giving him her soul-reaper powers to save them both after he acted recklessly and caused her injury. These feelings of guilt drive both characters throughout the Soul Society arc.
** Also with Orihime due to Aizen's machinations in the Soul Society Arc and Hueco Mundo Arc. In the Soul Society arc Rukia is arrested, imprisoned and scheduled for execution due to Aizen masquerading as the Central 46 so he can get the Hogyoku that Kisuke Urahara implanted in Rukia without her knowledge. During the Hueco Mundo Arc Orihime is forced to go with Ulquiorra when he threatens the lives of her friends due Aizen desired Orihime's healing powers to repair the damage of the Hogyoku; though this is later revealed to be a ruse by Aizen to trap a portion of the Gotei 13 and Ichigo in Hueco Mundo. At the end of the series Rukia and Orihime marry their respective childhood sweethearts.
* BountyHunter: Her Hollow-slaying duties are presented as such early in the manga, with her possessing a cell phone recording the bounties of the Hollows that she and Ichigo kill and alerting her to bounty notifications from Soul Society, and using the bounty payments to purchase supplies from Urahara. The first three Hollows Ichigo defeats are considered too inconsequential to warrant a bounty, but Shrieker warrants a modest reward.
* BreakTheCutie: While waiting for execution, Rukia reminisces over why she deserves to die for being responsible for the death of her mentor, Kaien Shiba. Resolved to accept her death gracefully, she is confronted by Gin who offers to save her from her fate. He waits just long enough for the weight of his words to sink in before telling her he was just joking and walking off. Rukia collapses, screaming with despair as she realises she doesn't want to die at all.
* BroughtDownToBadass: Rukia transferred most of her Soul Reaper ''Reiryoku'' into Ichigo, and was given a gigai by Urahara that was designed to seal her Soul Reaper powers and assimilate her soul [[spoiler: in an effort to seal the Hōgyoku away forever inside her Soul]]. She was still able to use kido in it, easily manhandle Ichigo, and could put up a defensive fight against Hollows, but her powers grew weaker over time and would have eventually disappeared, turning her into a normal human girl. Once she was removed from it, she quickly regained her powers.
* BunniesForCuteness: She loves ''things'' that are rabbit-themed and likes to make bunny drawings. Ichigo even calls her out on her obsession.
* BustContrastDuo: Rukia's petite frame and tempermental nature contrasts with Orihime's benign soul and buxom figure.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Renji, with whom she was in a gang in one of the worst districts of Soul Society.
* ClosetSublet: When Rukia is trapped in a gigai in the World of the Living, she secretly takes up residence in Ichigo's closet, and has to use clothes from Yuzu's closet to get by secretly. Ichigo is not thrilled when he finds out. When Hitsugaya's team arrives in the living world to fight the Arrancar, Rukia was hoping to go back to living in the closet, but is given a bed in Karin and Yuzu's room instead.
* ColorMotif: White. Upon losing her powers Rukia's black kimono turns white and stays that way until her powers are fully restored. Also, her Zanpakuto's powers are ice-based and white in color.
* ContraltoOfStrength: Rukia is the first Shinigami introduced in the series, and gradually works her way up to lieutenant and finally captain. Fittingly, she has a fairly deep voice [[VocalDissonance in spite of her girlish looks]].
* CutenessProximity: Loves stuffed animals, except for Kon. She has a thing for rabbits, especially Chappy, and often draws spirits as rabbits when trying to explain how the Soul Reapers' world and job functions. This is used as a WeaksauceWeakness in a fight against Riruka, who weaponises cute things in an attempt to distract her and is thrown off guard by the fact that plushies work far too well but cute furniture doesn't work at all.
* DamselInDistress: During the Soul Society arc as a result of losing her powers and being in the middle of a HeroicBSOD. After that, Rukia does kick ass most of the time, but has to be saved from time to time by someone else - usually Ichigo or Byakuya - after exhausting herself from her battle, particularly when she wins. For example, after she killed Aaroniero, she was so badly injured that she collapsed and couldn’t defend herself when Zommari arrived to finish what Aaroniero started, but was saved by Byakuya before he could attack her.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Rukia was (unknown to herself) abandoned by her older sister in the poorest part of Soul Society, and grew up a poor child having to steal to survive. While she would meet Renji and some other kids, forming a small family dynamic with them, all of the other kids eventually died except herself and Renji. Both went on to become Soul Reapers, but after being adopted by the Kuchiki family, was put into Squad 13, where she had few friends. She found a mentor in Kaien Shiba, but when Kaien was taken over by an experimental Hollow, she was forced to kill Kaien to save both herself and her captain. She was unable to forgive herself for decades until Ichigo gave her the chance to face up to her past, make peace with herself and apologise to Kaien's family for what happened.
* DeadGuyPuppet: After the time-skip, Rukia reveals that her Royal Guard training resulted in her being able to reduce her body to such cold temperatures she is technically dead. She continues to function by using her reiatsu to control her movements and keeping her nerve cells active.
* DeadpanSnarker: She has a lot of [[SnarkToSnarkCombat snarky banter]] with Ichigo.
* DeathSeeker: When facing execution in the Soul Society Arc, Rukia embraces the prospect of her death because she feels unworthy to live. Years ago, she was forced to kill her mentor, Kaien, and has been swallowed by guilt and self-loathing ever since. When she finally accepts her life matters enough to people who risk everything to save her, she begins to let go of her guilt.
* EtherealWhiteDress: Rukia Kuchiki's Zanpakuto, Sode no Shirayuki, is a pure white blade and possesses powers over snow and ice. Rukia's sword and power is based on the legend of the yuki-onna, the ghostly 'snow woman'. Her Bankai activation transforms her into the snow-woman of legend: her hair becomes white, her skin icy and her dress snow-white. The world around her transforms into one of snow and ice, and she becomes a detached, mystical being that is possessed of an otherworldly beauty. She even has to defrost back to normal body temperature when her Bankai ends.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange:
** Seventeen months after Aizen is defeated, Rukia wears her hair in a shorter bob.
** Ten years after Yhwach's defeat, Rukia's hair is in a style more similar to her original hairstyle but much longer. She's now seen wearing a side tail during the ''New Breathes From Hell'' arc, set two years after the original ending.
* FailureKnight: Her reasons for being willing to be executed stem from not being able to save her first BigBrotherMentor, Kaien Shiba, who bears a great resemblance to Ichigo.
* FamilyVersusCareer: Defied. In the epilogue Rukia marries Renji and they have a daughter, yet Rukia now outranks her husband with nobody finding it odd. She even teases Ichigo about having such a traditional marriage with Orihime.
* FashionableAsymmetry: After the time-skip, she wears her sleeves at different lengths.
* FemaleFlatfootAndSnarkyGuy: This was Rukia's initial relationship with Ichigo. She would keep tabs on invading Hollows and alert Ichigo to them, which he would initially struggle against due to having no formal training.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Downplayed, but Rukia is a lot more fun-loving than Byakuya.
* ForcedTransformation: Rukia may like cute toys, but being turned into a plushie isn't something she enjoys. Riruka uses her Love Gun to trap Rukia inside a plushie in the hope of rendering her powerless.
* GoingCommando: During a flashback of her poverty-stricken days in the Rukongai, she performs a high kick and her kimono revealed her leg all the way up to her waist.
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: Ichigo and Renji rely on raw strength while Rukia uses kido and her zanpakuto's ice powers.
* HairContrastDuo: Rukia's straight black hair contrasts with Ichigo and Renji's spiky red hair and she's generally the brains when paired up with either.
* HarmlessFreezing: Rukia's Shikai initially appears to freeze opponents, resulting in Grimmjow breaking free of her ice by claiming her attempt to freeze just the top layer of his skin isn't enough to hurt him. Äs Nödt is similarly dismissive of her when she uses her new Royal Guard-empowered Shikai, although her Bankai averts this trope by being a danger to both her opponents and herself.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Rukia has a complicated past that makes it hard for her to be open with others, and she often feels negative about herself. She carries the guilt of having had to kill her mentor Kaien Shiba when a hollow possessed him. Despite his gratitude towards her with his dying breath, Rukia has never overcome this tragic event and feels unworthy of living. These self-destructive thoughts make her accept her execution in the Soul Society Arc. While being rescued by Ichigo and Renji, Renji confronts her about her tendency to blame herself for everything. He reminds her that she doesn't have to carry all her burdens alone and that her friends are willing to help. This realization marks the beginning of her journey toward healing and self-forgiveness as she learns to understand the value of her own life.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Becomes this with Orihime over the series -- encouraging and fiercely protecting each other. After being told that she'd be a burden without Tsubaki by Urahara, Rukia tells Orihime that she's a great person whose friends care for her and ''not'' a burden, stating that she would've died in Soul Society if Orihime didn't come.
* HistoryRepeats: As her past reveals she was sidelined by her Captain Ukitake when the Lieutenant Kaien Shiba requested to fight an exceptionally powerful hollow alone, after said Hollow killed his wife. Ultimately Rukia is forced to kill Kaien after the latter his possessed by the Hollow. During the "The Substitute" arc on the anniversary of his mother's death, Ichigo request to fight another powerful hollow alone called the Grand Fisher. This Hollow killed Ichigo's mother years before the storyline. Unlike with Kaien she is not sidelined by a commanding officer, but decides to stay out of the fight anyway due to reflecting on Ukitake's words during the flashback and having an understanding that this fight is something that Ichigo has to do for himself. The fight eventually concludes with Ichigo emerging victorious, although the Grand Fisher escapes.
* HotBlooded: She normally acts calm, snarky, and aloof, maintaining a dignified persona befitting her noble status around her brother, but this hides an amusingly short temper that most often comes out when she's in the company of Ichigo or Renji. Considering what those two are like, HamToHamCombat often results.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: The Tiny Girl (standing 144 cm or around 4'9") to Ichigo's Huge Guy (standing 174 to 181cm, or between 5'8" and 5'11"). Also applies to Renji, who stands at 188cm, or 6'2". Sado is able to throw her like a volleyball at one point.
* AnIcePerson: Her Zanpakuto freezes everything it touches, enabling it to produce ice pillars, avalanches, and [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryoseism ice-quakes]], or turn enemies to solid ice and flash freeze everything in its radius. Once mastered, this power first freezes herself, reducing her body temperature to Absolute Zero and preventing her body from absorbing toxic substances. In Bankai, she becomes a pure white, icy statue clad in white robes. If she fights at freezing temperatures for too long, or raises her body temperature back to normal too quickly, her body will begin to fracture and shatter.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: When Rukia was first adopted into the Kuchiki clan, she feared that her new rank and rushed graduation from the academy would distance her from others and prevent her from being treated like a normal Soul Reaper. It turned out she was exactly right, until Kaien treated her just like any other raw recruit.
* ImmortalImmaturity: She boasts about being ten times Ichigo's age, but she's rather immature and mentally ''far'' closer to her apparent age of fifteen than her actual age.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Rukia is frequently impaled by opponents; as seen when Aizen extracted the Hogyoku from her chest, Grimmjow impaled her with his hand after she froze him, Aaroniero skewered her on Kaien's trident, and when ''Ichigo'' stabbed her in ''Anime/BleachFadeToBlack'' to purge the parasitic Hollow from her.
* ItsAllMyFault: She blamed herself for Kaien's death, and for some time after she had been arrested she thought Ichigo had died trying to save her. The combined guilt contributed significantly to her acceptance of her death sentence.
* KillTheOnesYouLove: She was forced to kill her BigBrotherMentor, Kaien Shiba, when he became possessed by a Hollow.
* LadyOfWar: Her rough, hot-tempered exterior hides an inner grace that becomes visible when she fights. This inner grace has given birth to a zanpakuto that is acknowledged as Soul Society's most beautiful. Her powers and fighting techniques are inspired by Chinese water and ribbon dancing and her activation commands are dance-based.
* LegFocus: The camera focuses on her legs whenever she's wearing a skirt (or a swimsuit in the anime).
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Rukia and Ichigo's constant head-butting causes many to assume they've got BelligerentSexualTension.
* LiterallyShatteredLives: Her powers are more than capable of inflicting this on an opponent, as D-Roy discovers. However, she runs the risk of doing this to ''herself'' if she's not careful - especially in bankai - which Byakuya is quick to warn her about.
* MagicSkirt: Rukia spends much of her time in the early part of the series running around fighting Hollows and RoofHopping in a high school uniform, complete with a short skirt, but the closest thing to a panty-shot she gets is Kon looking up her skirt after she steps on him and thanking her for the view.
* TheMaidenNameDebate: She kept her maiden name after she married Renji, while their daughter Ichika has her father's surname.
* MonsterBrotherCutieSister: Byakuya is an AloofBigBrother, while Rukia is able to make friends with pretty much anyone.
* MonsterRoommate: For a short while, Rukia takes up residence without permission in Ichigo's wardrobe while she waits for her powers to return after losing them to Ichigo.
* MsFanservice: A lot more so in the anime, where we see her in a schoolgirl uniform, a belly-dancer outfit (which shows her cleavage in a few shots), a bikini (where she bears her midriff), a kimono specifically modified to reveal her legs (as Dark Rukia) and a succubus outfit. A lot of attention is given to her legs and thighs in each of those outfits. In the manga, a chapter cover shows both her and Orihime nude from behind, the beach spread partially exposes her butt; and in the ''1000 Year Blood War'' arc, Ichigo is treated to a shot of her exposed butt while she's floating unconscious in a hot spring and Tenjirō Kirinji pokes fun at his reaction by asking if it puts him in the mood for peaches. In chapter 567's cover, she gets a very flattering shot of her [[SexyBacklessOutfit shirtless back]] and ass while looking over her shoulder.
* NoSell: After training in the Royal Realm, she's capable of using her shikai to easily dismiss a Quincy's power that was capable of curb-stomping a captain. Her shikai freezes her body, preventing Äs Nödt's fear toxin from seeping into her cells.
* TheNotLoveInterest: She's Ichigo's closest and most trusted companion and they will go to extreme lengths for each other. Yet they genuinely do not have any romantic interest in each other and marry other people.
* OneOfTheBoys: She was a tomboy growing up and spent much of her youth with Renji's all-male gang. Even in her adulthood, Rukia is never far from Ichigo and Renji on the frontlines and more than holds her own in their [[HamToHamCombat frequent verbal sparring]].
* PlatonicLifePartners: In the ''Fade to Black'' movie guide, Kubo describes [[http://tumblrhalix.tumblr.com/post/65221770745/ichinoue the relationship between Ichigo and Rukia]] as a close and unique friendship.
-->'''Creator/TiteKubo''': "It's not friendship but it's not an amorous feeling either. With these two's relationship, I think there is no other relationship like them in other works where despite both standing in a very close position with each other it is not romance (laughs). But in this year's movie there is a scene where Ichigo says Rukia is his "Precious nakama" and I think that explains their relationship well."
* POVBoyPosterGirl: Ichigo's a high school student who aside from his ability to see ghosts isn't any different from a common teen series. Rukia's a psychopomp from a world that resembles feudal Japan with magic and monster-hunters.
* PowerupFullColorChange: Rukia's Bankai turns her hair white and changes her clothing into an ornate white robe because it freezes her solid. Thawing out restores her natural colour and uniform, but could kill her if she melts too quickly.
* PowerStereotypeFlip: For AnIcePerson, Rukia can be quite the HotBlooded roughhouser and DeadpanSnarker outside of the battlefield.
* PrecisionFStrike: In the English dub of ''[[Anime/BleachHellVerse Hell Verse]]'', Rukia swears at one point in such a way that it caught fans off-guard who were more used to the fairly tame amount of language.
-->'''Rukia''': You're a couple of morons. Does it always have to be a ''pissing contest'' with the two of you?
* QuitYourWhining: Does this to Ichigo when she reunites with him in the Arrancar Arc, telling him not to be depressed over his failure or afraid of his Inner Hollow, but to focus on getting stronger and protecting his friends like he always has. In the Fullbring Arc, she says that as terrifying as Tsukishima's effects on Ichigo's friends are, he can rebuild it, and that amount of despair should not be enough to crush Ichigo.
* RagsToRoyalty: From a StreetUrchin who barely made it to being a teen to the adoptive sister of one of the highest-ranked and wealthiest aristocrats, as well as becoming a high-ranked captain in her own right: a flashback to the day Renji becomes a lieutenant reveals that even Soul Reapers who come from commoner backgrounds are considered legitimate equals to the highest levels of the aristocracy if they achieve lieutenant rank or higher. Rukia therefore ends the story as an equal to aristocrats by both adoption and merit.
* RankUp: After being promoted up through the ranks to lieutenant, Rukia receives one final promotion at the end of the story, ten years after Ukitake's death to replace him as captain.
* RunningGag: Rukia frequently tries to explain complex topics with illustrations, but due to her horrific artistic skills and obsession with rabbits and other cute animals, the people she's trying to explain things to -- most often Ichigo -- are more confused than when she started and complain about her drawings, [[BerserkButton making her angry]].
* SleepModeSize: In the pilot, the side effect of her giving her power to Ichigo is that she shrinks to a size so small that she can bathe in Ichigo's coffee mug.
* SolarAndLunar: As The White Moon, she shares a sun and moon motif with Ichigo.
* StepfordSmiler: Her outgoing, cheerful, boisterous personality for a long time hid a deep grief and guilt over the death of her mentor and superior, Kaien Shiba, who she was forced to kill.
* StreetUrchin: She ran with Renji and three other friends in one of the worst Rukongai districts. When the three friends died, she and Renji entered the Soul Reaper academy to escape from that life.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Rukia is uncannily similar in terms of appearance to her deceased older sister, Hisana; with them having similar facial features, eyes, and even hair styles.
* SuccubiAndIncubi: Dressed as a succubus in a Halloween volume spread, and in its corresponding filler episode.
* SuicideByCop: She knew she'd be executed if she returned to the Soul Society, and at the time while she didn't quite wish to die, she also didn't feel like resisting due to guilt over killing Kaien Shiba.
* SuperEmpowering: Transfers her Soul Reaper powers into Ichigo at the beginning of the series, awakening his own.
* TerribleArtist: Rukia will often use drawings to illustrate points and explain things, and expresses a great deal of pride in her artistry. However, her poor artistic quality and tendency to draw cartoony bears and rabbits leads to a RunningGag of her reacting violently whenever someone -- usually Ichigo -- remarks that her drawings so bad that she's only confused them more.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Rukia and Orihime have had a close friendship ever since Rukia first empowered Ichigo. The tomboy appears to be Rukia, with her rough-tempered, physically violent personality and soldier lifestyle. The girly girl appears to be Orihime, with her gentle, protective and peaceful personality and aversion to violence. However, when given the choice, Rukia wears loose dresses, reads romance novels and adores cartoon artwork and bunnies while Orihime sometimes wears traditionally boyish clothes and is quietly a black-belt martial artist who is into sci-fi and robots, sharing her boys' comics with her male friends.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Rukia was raised in one of the most violent regions of Soul Society. She is quick-tempered, physically violent and shouts a lot. However, she's into cartoon artwork and cute and fluffy animals (especially bunnies), favours wearing dresses when given the choice, and loves romance stories. Renji states on one occasion that she has an inner grace that shines through even her roughest behavior.
* TookALevelInBadass: After being defeated by the Vandenreich, Rukia undergoes intensive training with the Royal Guards to raise her game so that she can fight back. She trains with the Royal Guard itself to become powerful enough to fight enemies that defeated even the captains; this includes learning to use Bankai.
* TrueCompanions: When in prison, she told Hanataro that even though she'd only known Ichigo for two months, he was someone she trusted from the bottom of her heart. She encouraged him to fight his Inner Hollow, followed him into Hueco Mundo against orders, stood up for him when the Captains were worried he would betray Soul Society, and was the one who brought him out of his despair at losing his Fullbring. Even though they don't love each other, the two see each other as the most important person in their lives, such that whenever one of them is in danger, they tend to divert their attention to saving them.
* {{Unperson}}: Rukia had artificially created an existence for herself as a transfer student when she was hiding in the World of the Living. As a result, Soul Society removes all traces of Rukia's existence from the World of the Living when she's returned to Soul Society, including wiping human memories. Only those with spiritual pressure remember her, such as Ichigo, Orihime, Sado and Uryu. When she returns later, this is seemingly reverted so as to fit in better.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Turning Ichigo into a Soul Reaper was already a highly forbidden act, but it also caused him to absorb nearly all of her power due to his overwhelming capability. The result is not only her being almost defenseless against later Hollow threats and the Shinigami that come to arrest her in due time, but Ichigo ends up being the also-unwitting catalyst for Aizen being able to kick his plans into motion, which means her selflessness ultimately kicks off most of the conflicts and plot in the series.
* UpThroughTheRanks: Rukia was a lieutenant-class Soul Reaper who spent decades as a [[AlmightyJanitor seatless soldier]] because her brother had quietly made sure she could never be promoted in an [[KnightTemplarBigBrother attempt]] to keep her safe from harm. This changes during the seventeen-month time-skip where she is finally promoted to lieutenant, and in the epilogue she is promoted to the Captain of Squad 13.
* UptownGirl: {{Zigzagged|Trope}}. While she and Renji both grew up in the Rukongai slums, her adoption into the Kuchiki clan after they joined the Soul Reaper Academy subjected her to the rules of the highest ranked aristocrats in Soul Society. Renji's resolve to obtain lieutenant took him forty years to achieve and was driven by the fact that lieutenants and captains earn the right to move in the highest aristocratic social circles regardless of their background. It was the only socially acceptable way he could reunite with Rukia.
* VitriolicBestBuds: She and Ichigo by WordOfGod are "closer than friends, but not lovers", and the way they express this, naturally, is constantly insulting each other and sarcastic comments.
* WellDoneDaughterGirl: A sibling variant. Lacking parents or a guardian of any kind most of her life, Rukia always seeks approval from her adopted older sibling, [[AloofBigBrother Byakuya]]. Pre-character development, he usually brushed her off by saying not to bother him with something so trivial. His character development improved his [[KnightTemplarBigBrother relationship with her]]; his outward behavior has not changed, but he makes significantly less effort to obfuscate his true feelings and Rukia can more easily pick up on his subtext.
* TheWorfEffect: When Hitsugaya's advance guard first engaged the Arrancar, Rukia easily defeated the weakest fraccion. Then she was one-shotted to prove Shawlong's point about the difference in power between an Espada (Grimmjow) and a fraccion (D-Roy).
* YouCanSeeMe: Word for word her third sentence in the series, incredulously asking Ichigo if he can see her after nonchalantly walking into his room.

----
A classmate of Ichigo's, Orihime is introduced as having a crush on him because she finds his tough guy image comedic. One of Ichigo's earliest Soul Reaper acts is saving Orhime from her Hollowfied brother. Although Rukia tries to wipe the event from her memory, she secretly remembers it and develops spiritual awareness. When Rukia is forced to return to Soul Society, Orihime encourages Ichigo to go after her and then helps him rescue her. Bubbly, cheerful and scatterbrained, she is both a top academic achiever and talented martial artist, and later her more complicated psyche is revealed little by little.

During the Hollow attack instigated by Uryuu, she develops an unusual and unclassifiable ability called '''''Shun Shun Rikka''''': by manifesting six spiritual beings, she can create barriers that perform different tasks, including shielding, undoing injuries and cutting things in half. This last ability requires KillingIntent which she struggles to harness until late in the end, whereas her healing and shielding are almost unparalleled. This power was eventually revealed to be awakened by the Hōgyoku influence.
----
* AdaptationDyeJob: The color of Orihime's eyes vary from the manga to the {{anime}}. They are shown as brown in the manga while the anime depicts them as silver or gray; ''The Thousand Year Blood War anime'' fixes this back to brown. This goes for her hair too, as it's orange in the anime, but in the {{manga}} it's slightly inconsistent. Characters remark that she has brown or chestnut hair, but manga covers and such vary between her having brown or orange hair
* AllLovingHeroine:
** When she's captured by the Arrancar, she refuses to hurt them, shows them love and heals those who torture and abuse her. In the ''Nestle to Night'' novel, it's confirmed that the reason Harribel and her fraccions are still alive is because Orihime healed them. When she steps between Shishigawara and Tsukishima, Tsukishima notes her reputation and admits he's not surprised to see her trying to protect a man who had just threatened to kill her. However, he turns out to be wrong; [[spoiler: she was trying to maintain Tsukishima's attention so she could confirm whether or not he was the person who had almost killed Uryu]].
** This aspect is also {{Deconstructed|CharacterArchetype}} when it comes to her powers. Her powers get stronger by the amount she believes or wants to do something, which makes it strong for supporting others because she is a kind person who wants to help people, but poor for offense because said kindness means she cannot muster a desire to truly want to hurt someone. When she tries to help fight Yammy the first time, she gets hurt badly because she couldn't bring herself to try to kill someone. This is part of the reason why Urahara tries not to have her join the conflict, as her kind nature makes her in combat too much of a liability.
* AttackReflector: Her Shiten Kōshun (Defiant Shield of the Four Heavens), which blocks an enemy's attack and then unleashes a concentrated explosion along the attack's opposing trajectory.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Orihime is a huge {{cloudcuckoolander}} and gets distracted very easily, which is played up in the anime. This just adds adorableness to her, though.
* BabiesEverAfter: The epilogue reveals she and Ichigo have a son together named Kazui Kurosaki, who she watches over using her Shun Shun Rika.
* BadassAdorable: Orihime is notable for her beauty and compassion, and generally takes a passive or supportive role in combat situations -- namely by defending and healing her allies. Despite this, when pushed she's capable of taking a more active role in combat, as seen when she kills Numb Chandelier for attacking Tatsuki; when she stops and injures Ginjo when he tries to attack Ichigo while he's being healed; when she stands with Ichigo, Ishida and Sado to fight some Hollows; and when Ichigo chooses her as his partner for the first part of the definitive fight against Yhwach.
* BareMidriffsAreFeminine: In the final arc, Urahara gives her a dress that exposes her entire stomach and a great deal of cleavage, accentuating her shapely, feminine and attractive figure. She's embarrassed by the amount of skin it shows, but wears it because he tells her Ichigo will like it.
* BarrierWarrior: All of her abilities use barriers to accomplish various goals. Her triangle shield blocks attacks, her oval shield heals injuries, her four-part shield reflects attacks, and even her attack power is essentially launching a barrier at her opponent to slice them in half.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: At her wits' end after seeing Ulquiorra blow a hole in Ichigo's chest and maul Uryu, she desperately screams for Ichigo's help. Ichigo hears her plea and resolves to protect her... [[CameBackWrong coming back as a nearly mindless Hollow]] who easily defeats Ulquiorra and then turns on Uryu for objecting to him continuing to carve up Ulquiorra's apparently dead body. As Hollow Ichigo prepares to finish off Uryu, Orihime berates herself for always ending up depending on Ichigo.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Zigzagged somewhat, but Orihime's physical injuries are usually miniscule compared to the men and other women of the series. One rare exception is the beating that Loly delivers, which does leave very noticeable wounds on her face. Another exception comes at the hands of Quilge Opie. Sado gets the worst of it, but Orihime gets a ''massive'' chunk of her hip blown out.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Orihime was picked on in middle school because of her hair color, with some of her bullies giving her a TraumaticHaircut to be cruel; she would keep it short to avoid their bullying. One day, [[BullyHunter Tatsuki]] protected from them which allowed Orihime to grow her hair again. And to Orihime, letting her hair grow long is a sign of gratitude for Tatsuki's actions and as a symbol of their friendship.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: When she first unleashes her powers, she turns the tables on what the attacking Hollow thought was the victim (Orihime) and the protector (Tatsuki), killing the Hollow in a single strike for daring to harm Tatsuki. Later on in the [=XCution=] arc, Ginjo gets introduced the hard way to this side of her.
-->'''Orihime:''' Sadistic? I don't mind you calling me that. If you don't want to get hurt... '''Don't attack me when I say not to'''.
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Ichigo, orange hair that gets them into trouble with bullies, loss of a family member, magnets of the opposite sex, and {{All Loving Hero}}es. By the epilogue the two are HappilyMarried.
* BizarreTasteInFood: Orihime is infamous in-universe for the very strange combinations she makes of what would normally be completely ordinary ingredients. As a result, few want to try her food because it sounds so weird everyone assumes it will taste disgusting. Those brave (or crazy) enough to try discover that she's actually an excellent cook and those weird combinations actually taste wonderful.
* BoobBasedGag: She's constantly being felt up by Chizuru, and Yachiru's nicknames for her include Jiggles and Big Boobies. Urahara finally invokes the trope by tricking her into putting on a ''very'' {{Stripperiffic}} outfit with one hell of a CleavageWindow ''and'' {{underboobs}}. Urahara designs the dress so that if she tries to push her breasts further into the dress from the front, they'll end up popping out the sides. In fact, her boobs are so big that Yourichi is able to put her entire arm through them with ease.
* BoundAndGagged: Her arms were bound and her mouth was gagged by Grimmjow, who put her under a rag in order to keep her hidden from view of the other Arrancar. As soon as they reach Ichigo, he removes the bounds and cuts the gag immediately.
* BoyishShortHair: In the past, she cut her hair very short to stop bullies from messing with it. After she befriended Tatsuki, who drove away anyone who would bully her, she grew it out to its current length.
* BreakingTheCycleOfBadParenting: Her own parents were stated to have been abusive by her older brother (who ran off with her as soon as he was old enough to act as her legal guardian). In contrast, she's shown to be a loving and attentive mother to Kazui in the epilogue.
* BreakTheCutie: A plot point in the Arrancar Arc that led to a huge, but recoverable, HeroicBSOD. While trying to deal with the surfacing of her long-buried self-esteem issues, she was emotionally blackmailed into entering the {{Big Bad}}'s lair, received a brutal beating by two very jealous Arrancar girls and had to watch Ichigo almost die by Ulquiorra's hand.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: For most of the series, Ichigo is a scowling young man who harbors tremendous guilt whenever he can't protect anyone, while Orihime remained mostly upbeat and hopeful.
* BustContrastDuo: Orihime is a benign soul and buxom figure who contrasts with Rukia's petite frame and temperamental nature.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: One of the reasons she's so popular at school and in the Soul Society is her enormous bust size. Adulthood seems to have been kind to her, as by her marriage to Ichigo her breasts are now even bigger than ''Rangiku''.
* CallingYourAttacks: During the Soul Society Arc, Orihime works very hard to learn how to call her powers without calling the names. The extra effort saves the lives of herself, Uryu and Arimaki when Mayuri uses his soldiers as human bombs to try and kill them due to the fact she can call them instantaneously. After the Soul Society Arc, she usually reverts to calling her attacks in the standard style, except when her shields pop up unexpectedly during dramatic moments to protect a friend who looks like they're about to be defeated.
* CharacterDevelopment: Goes from being cheerful into a very solemn character since the Arrancar arc first began. Then she returns straight back to being cheerful, but with a pluckier disposition.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Ichigo. They've known each other since middle school and were still acquainted with one another during high school. And during the latter, they became closer friends and warrior comrades. By the epilogue, they are married with a son.
* CleavageWindow: In the final arc, she wears a dress that is reminiscent of her Las Noches dress, except for the amount of skin it exposes, which includes a very large gap in the centre of her chest.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Friendliness and love are Orihime's defining traits, but she also proves to be a ''wee bit odd'' on more than a few occasions, like answering a questionnaire about how she sees herself in the future by drawing herself as a giant killer robot, [[CordonBleughChef combining incompatible ingredients in her meals]], and creating equally bizarre sports like a combination of baseball and soccer. This trait is totally flattened during her time Las Noches, because hey, ''psychological torture'' and ''physical abuse'', especially for someone as gentle as her, does that to you, but resurfaces full-bore afterwards. Her first appearance post-TimeSkip has her jumping out a window without a second's regard for her safety just to meet Ichigo and Tatsuki.
* CombatMedic: She tries to be this, but since she lacks any KillingIntent her offensive ability is absolutely pitiful. However, she has some of the best healing powers in the story and eventually finds a way around her limitations in combat.
* CordonBleughChef: She has an odd way of combining ingredients and food items which prevents anyone from wanting to try her meals. Her food is actually quite tasty, but very few people know this because they're too scared to try her crazy recipes. The sole exception is fellow {{Cloudcuckoolander}} Rangiku.
* CovertPervert: During her more CloudCuckoolander moments, she's revealed to have a rather lascivious and naughty side. When Ichigo invited her to his room she happily fidgeted and imagined him seducing her for sex despite that not happening at all and at one point rambled about how much she enjoyed BDSM.
* CuteClumsyGirl: She's actually pretty physically impressive for a human, though she doesn't look it. However, early on she had a kind of absent minded ditziness and tendency to accidentally get herself hurt.
* CrushFilter: When Orihime reminisces on visiting Ichigo with leftover bread in the Fullbringer arc, Ichigo is depicted suavely inviting her inside while wearing a suit. While Orihime swoons over the memory, the audience is presented with reality of Ichigo in casual clothes simply saying "Wanna come in?"
* DamselInDistress: The Hueco Mundo arc is absolutely NOT shy about showing the tremendous emotional and physical strain it brings on a person forced in a hostage situation. It goes to the extreme of causing her an epic HeroicBSOD. She didn't really recover until well after being rescued.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: In the manga, it's briefly mentioned that [[AbusiveParents Orihime's parents were abusive]]; it was the reason her older brother Sora left them to raise her himself when he turned eighteen. She [[AngstWhatAngst chats about it quite casually to Riruka]] during the Fullbringer arc, probably because she was just three years old back then thus she was too young to properly remember their bad treatment of her. And after that she was bullied because of her hair color and her brother died in accident.
* DeathByFallingOver: In the pilot, her deceased father pushed her down some steps, killing her in the process.
* DemotedToExtra: Her role is significantly decreased in the first Bleach musical adaptation, and she's excised entirely from the later ones.
* DitzyGenius: Very much so. Orihime is actually very well-read and intelligent, consistently scoring among the best grades in her school, but is also dorky, clumsy and airheaded... You just wonder ''how'' such a goofy, spacey and flighty {{cloudcuckoolander}}, with her head constantly being somewhere else, can be near the top of the class in work grades. Everyone is actually shocked to see her name be so high up after exams.
* {{Dominatrix}}: A gag in [[{{Filler}} episode 169]] implies Orihime is one. When she hears about Ichigo's fight with Rurichiyo Kasumiōji, she imagines that the princess was [[DressedLikeADominatrix dressed in revealing black leather, boots, and weapons]] and seems excited by the thought of her dominating Ichigo in the battle. Rukia, who's in earshot, {{lampshade|Hanging}}s this.
* DudeHesLikeInAComa: Orihime attempts to kiss an unconscious Ichigo while saying good bye to him before departing for Hueco Mundo. She stops inches away from his face and begins to cry, telling herself she was behaving badly for considering it.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: After years of living by herself, Orihime finally gets a family of her own, happily marries the man of her dreams, Ichigo, years after the Blood War, and gives birth to their son Kazui.
* EndearinglyDorky: Orihime is an outlandish, airheaded and naive girl yet is nothing but adorable, kind, sweet and idealistic.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: [[ChivalrousPervert Chizuru]] can't stop hitting on Orihime.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: She starts wearing her bangs in the style of the above picture shortly before the Soul Society arc. She introduces a different one after the Time-Skip, more similar to a HimeCut. In the last chapter, she keeps her hair in a mix of HimeCut and MotherlySidePlait.
* FanservicePack: Orihime begins the series with a moderately sized -- but not comically large -- bust and grows increasingly buxom over the course of the series both as part of Kubo's ArtEvolution and in-universe; with a classmate noting this at the beginning of the Tale of the Lost Agent arc. This can be justified, as Orihime is still a growing adolescent teenager who's still maturing for a girl her age. In swimsuit art of her as an adult published in the ''Jet'' artbook, she's shown with breasts larger than her head.
* FightingFromTheInside: Seeing Ichigo in pain, makes her start questioning why, which threatens the mind control she's under. Tsukishima, however, is on hand to address this, although his attempted MindRape is foiled by Urahara and Isshin.
%% * {{Flanderization}}: Anime writers love to make her [[CloudCuckooLander more ditzy]] than she really is in fillers.
* FlowerMotifs: Her hair clips and the names of her power fairies all evoke flowers[[note]]Ayame (Iris), Baigon (Plum Blossom), Hinagiku (Daisy), Lily ('''nuff said''), Shun'o (Althea), and Tsubaki (Camellia)[[/note]]; her clothes also have a lot of floral patterns.
* ForcedToWatch: Both Nnoitra and Ulquiorra make her watch as either they or their henchmen beat Ichigo within an inch of his life.
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: Orihime is a well-mannered girl who usually wears flowing skirts and wears her hair long in the memory of her brother. She nearly always retains her friendly, bubbly spirit and weird sense of humour, and prefers people to get along. Her abilities are personality based, focused on protecting and healing rather than physical violence. However, she's interested in sci-fi and robots, she reads boys' comics (and lends them out to boys), and she is a black-belt martial artist (the anime changes this to yellow-belt).
* GreenEyedMonster:
** In the early Arrancar arc, Orihime assumes that Ichigo is in love with Rukia and becomes depressed over her jealousy and how useless she is. A pep talk from Matsumoto and Rukia herself managed to snap her out of it.
** During the Vandenreich arc, when Neliel arrives and glomps Ichigo, now wearing a bracelet from Urahara that allows her to stay in her busty adult form for as long as she wants, Chad thinks Orihime's emotional reaction is jealousy and attempts to reassure her that the scene isn't what she's thinking. Orihime is startled by Chad's conclusion and tells him that isn't what she's thinking at all, but doesn't get the opportunity to clarify.
* GrowlingGut: Her tummy grumbles a few times from hunger when she insists she isn't really hungry.
* HappilyMarried: [[spoiler:Although the ending doesn't show much, it's clear she's in a loving and happy marriage to Ichigo along with their son.]]
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: Orihime tries hard to be more aggressive in combat, but since her fundamental nature hates violence she decides to focus more on her support abilities.
* HeadTurningBeauty: The Rukongai dwellers who watched her heal Jidanbou reminisce about how hot she is. By the time she's in her final year in school, she's very popular at school, with younger students even taking pictures of her. Her beauty distracts Shishigawara, temporarily subduing him [[PlayedForLaughs by accident]].
* HealingHands: She appears to reverse causality to make it so that an injury never happened. This ability has the potential to not only bring the dead back to life, but also to return those who have been vaporized back to life, though she herself has not demonstrated the ability to do so, and she has been known to struggle to heal injuries caused by extremely strong and unusual reiatsu like Ulquiorra's.
* HeroicBSOD: During the Arrancar Arc, Aizen enacts a hostage scenario that is designed to completely break Orihime. She eventually snaps when Ulquiorra punches a hole through Ichigo's chest and leaves behind reiatsu that prevents her from healing Ichigo. As she breaks down, she begins a mindless chant of Ichigo's name. The original Japanese uses a meaningless string of Hiragana to indicate a complete absence of sense or self-control.
* HeterosexualLifePartners:
** Since they were kids, she and Tatsuki have been tight-knit best friends who always hang out with each other.
** Becomes this with Rukia over the series -- encouraging and fiercely protecting each other. After being told that she'd be a burden without Tsubaki by Urahara, Rukia tells Orihime that she's a great person whose friends care for her and ''not'' a burden, stating that she would've died in Soul Society if Orihime didn't come.
* HiddenDepths: Despite being a spacey {{cloudcuckoolander}}, not only she's actually very intelligent and among the top students in her school, but she's as well introduced as one of the few classmates not afraid of Ichigo and who is surprisingly perceptive of his real moods. Then she's attacked by her hollowfied brother, helps Ichigo find the resolve to save Rukia and develops a level of power that makes her capable of entering Soul Society as part of the rescue team. Her self-esteem issues are dealt with for drama rather than comedy, culminating in a [[HeroicBSOD massive breakdown]] as a result of a [[BreakTheCutie carefully planned]] and protracted psychological assault.
* HopelessWithTech: Volume 12's slice of life sketch covers the school's Handicraft Club trying to cope with sewing competitions while their two best sewers (Orihime and Uryu) are off rescuing Rukia. When the club speculate about why the pair are uncontactable, someone suggests that Orihime doesn't own a mobile phone because she can't handle electronics. However, in the Lost Agent Arc, she is shown to not only possess a mobile, but to be experimenting with creating different ring tone designs too.
* ImplausibleHairColor: Her hair is orange in the anime like Ichigo's. WordOfGod states it's actually "caramel" coloured (and that he changed it from its original shade of "light sepia").
* ImportantHairAccessory: Her hairpins, given to her by her brother on the day he died and which she vowed she'd never stop wearing. Cue the time-skip where she's now too old to wear them in her hair but, in keeping with her promise, she continues to wear them as lapel accessories. She then puts them back on in the Thousand-Year-Old Blood War.
* ImportantHaircut: She let her red hair ''grow'' as a sign of her friendship with Tatsuki, after keeping it short due to an incident involving a TraumaticHaircut. Orihime's hair growth throughout the story is one of the visual signs used to show the passage of time, especially whenever a TimeSkip occurs. She gets it cut again by the finale after settling down with Ichigo.
* IncompatibleOrientation: She's straight, and eventually marrying Ichigo. That said, doesn't stop Chizuru from flirting with her.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: An extremely kind, generous, selfless and compassionate young lady who doesn't have a mean bone in her body and is very forgiving.
* InelegantBlubbering: After Ulquiorra more or less kills Ichigo in their second fight with a point-blank Cero and proceeds to maul Ishida while her healing powers fail to close the gaping hole in Ichigo's chest. Her screams of desperation ultimately revive Ichigo, [[CameBackWrong but not in the way she wanted (initially)]]. She also cries rather messily when she senses Ichigo crying in despair over Ginjo stealing his powers, even though she's not entirely sure what's going on due to Tsukishima's MindManipulation making her think that Ichigo's going crazy.
* InformedAbility: She's a karate black belt (yellow, in the anime). The only time we know she uses them is to subdue two Soul Reaper and steal their uniforms. The confrontation occurs off-screen, but Ishida's reaction is shown to the audience, and he's very impressed.
* IRejectYourReality: A ''literal'' example: Aizen describes Orihime's power as "the Rejection of Events": she creates a space in which any phenomenon, regardless of how or ''[[{{Retconjuration}} when]]'' it happened, can be negated at will. It's implied her lack of the [[{{Determinator}} personality traits]] usually associated with this trope is the only reason she can't OneHitKill most of the villains.
* KillingIntent: [[ActualPacifist She lacks this]], which is why Tsubaki is never effective as a weapon. She eventually learns to combine him with the other Shun Shun Rika to form shields that can both protect and [[AttackReflector turn attacks]] back onto the attacker at the same time.
* LastNameBasis: In the Japanese dub she addresses most people by their last names with appropriate honorifics; for example, she calls Ichigo "Kurosaki-kun," and Rukia "Kuchiki-san". One of the few exceptions is her long-time best friend Tatsuki, whom she calls "Tatsuki-chan," [[spoiler:and Ichigo calls her by her first name after they get married]].
* LegFocus: While it's not shown as much as other characters, her school uniform and other outfits shows she's got some sleek and slender legs on her.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: She and Masaki share a similar hair color, facial features, and personality. In fact, both Karin and Yuzu commented that Orihime reminds them a lot of their mother in ''We Do Not Always Love You''.
* LuminescentBlush: When Ichigo and Chad state her new outfit's large CleavageWindow is a bit much for them, Orihime turns bright red and [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial immediately protests]] that she is not a CovertPervert. Yoruichi [[ThanksForTheMammaries interrupts her]], berates Ichigo for his tactlessness, and explains that Urahara tricked her into wearing it by saying [[AllMenArePerverts Ichigo would like it]].
* MacGuffinSuperPerson: Aizen grabs her because she should be able to speed the acceleration of the Hogyoku's awakening. It was just a decoy to keep as many captain level fighters off the battlefield as possible.
* MadnessMantra: An internal example when Ichigo is mortally wounded by Ulquiorra's Cero Oscuras and Uryū has his arm torn off -- broken in the anime. She collapses and begins repeating "Kurosaki-kun..." over and over entirely in hiragana, meaning it's just a stream of syllables with no meaning attached.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: Laughs off getting hit by a car since she doesn't want anyone to worry.
* TheMedic: Her ability to create shields includes the ability to create a shield that heals the injuries of the one enclosed. This ability mystifies everyone who sees it, and a number of characters have speculated about what her ability is really doing and what its limits may be. Due to her compassionate nature, this is one of the abilities she excels at; she is hinted to be the most gifted healer in the story, being able to restore to its original condition even things that have been completely obliterated. She can even "heal" Zanpakuto that have been broken in Bankai - something Mayuri previously described as impossible for anyone who isn't Komamura.
* MistakenForDyed: Just like Ichigo, Orihime often gets into trouble over her natural orange hair being confused for dye.
* MsFanservice: She dresses modestly but there's still plenty of focus on her boobs and legs. She goes through a BoundAndGagged situation, and she spends an entire episode in a bikini. When she returns from Hueco Mundo in the final arc, Urahara has tricked her into wearing a very immodest dress that contains both a CleavageWindow and an exposed midriff.
* MundaneUtility: In the epilogue, Orihime is using the Shun Shun Rika to keep watch over her son whenever the boy wanders off.
* NeutralFemale: Orihime has some of the most powerful barrier abilities in the story, but even when she successfully shields her friends in battle, saving their lives in the process, she will often be told to stay out of the fighting and on the sidelines for her own good. Multiple characters have realised that her delicate personality is not suited for battle, so everyone tries to keep her out of the fighting as much as possible. During the TimeSkip, she learns how to use her shields to reflect attacks back at the attacker and during the final arc, Ichigo finally asks her to fight by his side against the BigBad because he knows he needs her BarrierWarrior abilities to keep him fighting.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: Her brother and guardian Sora Inoue died right after their only serious fight. She did get to say goodbye to him after he reappeared as a Hollow.
* NiceGirl: Orihime's easily one of the most affectionate, kind-hearted, and polite characters in the series. How kind is she? To the point that when she becomes jealous of Rukia's bond with Ichigo, rather than becoming bitter or hostile, she gushes about how wonderful and amazing Rukia is and how bad she feels to be jealous of such a good person. Rangiku herself notes this as a reason why Ichigo needs Orihime as much as he needs Rukia and why she is a truly good person herself. She even healed Harribel and her Fraccions despite their affiliation with the Espada.
* TheNoseKnows: She is shown early on to possess the ability to detect Ichigo by scent. However, the scent is often how sensing Reiatsu is described (the Soul Reapers often comment on smelling Hollow Reiatsu) and therefore was probably nothing more than an early sign that she had developed Reiatsu-sensing powers.
* OfficialCouple: After spending the series teasing something between the two, the epilogue reveals Ichigo and Orihime are HappilyMarried and have a son, Kazui.
* ParentalAbandonment: In the anime, Sora doesn't reference their parents' abuse, and says he raised Orihime after they were abandoned.
* PersonalityPowers: An interesting example, in that her most powerful abilities are those related to defense and healing due to her pacifistic nature. While she is capable of using her power to attack directly, her lack of aggression reduces its effectiveness. Theoretically her attack power could cut through anything if she were determined enough, and over the course of the series she's become more willing to counterattack, but she still lacks lethal intent and is thus incapable of, say, cutting someone in half.
* ThePollyanna: Back in the old days of ''Bleach'', she was very chipper and upbeat, which led fans and characters alike would think of her as weird or even crazy. After the end of her BreakTheCutie ordeals, she's back to her old self, but has learned from her experiences.
* PracticallyDifferentGenerations: Her brother was 15 years older than she was; at the time of his death, he was 27 and she was 12. Because of that, he says that he thought of Orihime as more of a daughter than a sister.
* PseudoRomanticFriendship: Her relationship with Tatsuki, early in the series, was often framed this way.
* RealityWarper: Her powers are revealed to have this quality to them, by "Rejecting" things (usually injuries and even fatalities), but are limited by both her emotional state and what she personally believes is possible or not. Hacchi advises her that where mastering her power is concerned, she needs to remember that she shouldn't think of how the world works but how she wants the world to work. Notably, when Yhwach, now a PhysicalGod, tries attacking her shields, even with his powers being capable of affecting reality and time, he cannot initially break them.
* RiddleForTheAges: Unlike Chad's Fullbring powers, the origin or nature of Orihime's Shun Shun Rikka is never really explained. [[spoiler: At least, until the second volume of the novel ''Can't Fear Your Own World'', when Urahara names both she and Chad as Fullbringers, and reveals that all Fullbringers have pieces of the Soul King within them.]]
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Inverted - in the final arc, Urahara gives her a dress that exposes her entire stomach and a great deal of cleavage. She's embarrassed by the amount of skin it shows, but wears it because he tells her Ichigo will like it.
* ShesBack: After suffering a great deal of psychological trauma at the hands of Aizen and his Arrancar, she returns to her good old goofy self after the TimeSkip.
* ShipperOnDeck: ''We Do Knot Always Love You'' has Orihime cry TearsOfJoy when Rukia and Renji told her of their engagement.
* SignatureHairDecs: She received a set of hairpins from her brother which she uses to channel her powers. She no longer wears them after the timeskip, keeping them attached to her lapels instead, but in the Thousand Year Old Blood War she eventually puts them back on.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Orihime even stated that if she was reincarnated with five different lives she would still fall in love with Ichigo.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: The reason behind her deep love for Ichigo? First, his funny face. Later, his kindness. And she remains in love with him because she knows first-hand how kind he is under his tough-guy facade.
* SkilledButNaive: Orihime has black-belt martial arts ability. She also has a one-hit kill ability that is potentially devastating. The snag is that she is too idealistic and soft-hearted to be able to function as a warrior. The end result is someone who struggles to possess the mentality for battle which affects her skills and power. After the Arrancar Arc where Aizen enacted a plan to emotionally break her, she begins working very hard to find a way to be more useful on the battlefield than simply healing and shielding. This enables her to develop further barrier abilities, like creating protective shields that simultaneously turn an attacker's power back on themselves.
* SparklingStreamOfTears: In the process of saying goodbye to an unconscious Ichigo before departing for captivity in Hueco Mundo, Orihime pours her heart out to him, including confessing her feelings. The intensity of the moment leads to her nearly kissing him, but she pulls back at the last minute and tears up over her behaviour.
* StayInTheKitchen: She ''does'' want to be helpful, but she's frequently told that she lacks the aggressive mindset to utilize her powers properly and is advised to play a support role. When Urahara finally tells her to stay off the battlefield entirely, both Chad and Rukia are insulted on her behalf - none of them realise until too late what Urahara's ulterior motives for the request really are (to keep her safe from Aizen's grasp). Towards the end of the final arc, Ichigo finally asks her to fight by his side, knowing he'll need her abilities to keep him going against Yhwach.
* StepfordSmiler: She used to hide her issues from the others, though not very well. Discussed during her conversation with Riruka about her past, when the latter is astonished that she can talk about her ParentalAbandonment and her brother's death while happily chowing down on donuts.
* StoryBreakerPower: Orihime possesses a RealityWarper power that is an in-universe mystery. Characters have speculated that she can do anything if she believes she can and that she's never tapped into her full potential. She is exactly as strong as she believes she is, which is both her greatest strength and her greatest weakness: she's so gentle, pacifistic, kind and unassuming that she cannot harm others, not even enemies, and it doesn't occur to her that she can break the laws of physics even when told she can. Most impressively, she can outright NoSell Yhwach's The Almighty when she assists Ichigo in fighting him, and he can only defeat her by having to work around said power.
* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: While it can sometimes be attributed to emotional distress (like Ulquiorra blasting a hole in Ichigo's chest), there are also some occasions where her powers, which have gone to the extent of outright reviving someone whose upper half was vaporized, seem to become ineffective simply because they would be too convenient for the plot.
* SuperCuteSuperPowers: Orihime Inoue's abilities come from fairies made from her hairpins. Granted, her offensive fairy is a ScarfOfAsskicking jerkass and her potential abilities are among the greatest in the work, but on paper it's an exceedingly feminine ability.
* SuperpowerLottery: She very much is the winner of one - it's implied by genius-level characters like Aizen that if she had the willingness, she could be a borderline PhysicalGoddess that could "reject" anything with her abilities, via shielding, attacking, or a reversal of reality. The only thing that keeps her ability from being an outright StoryBreakerPower is that she's such a sweet girl that the notion of fighting scares her, so her abilities are relegated to being mainly supportive. That said, she's easily one of the best healers by the end of the narrative, and she can NoSell damn near anyone with her shields, even later creating shields that can reflect damage back at someone.
* TalkingWeapon: Taken to the extreme with six different characters personifying her powers. The two most like her (Shun-o: [[TheMentor outgoing and friendly]], Ayame: [[ShrinkingViolet shy and sweet]]) are her strongest power, the [[HealingHands Soten Kisshun]]. The one least like her (Tsubaki: aggressive and bossy) is not only her attack power but easily her weakest. By using Tsubaki ''[[AttackReflector in combination with others]]'' (Hinagiku, Lily and Baigon) she can draw on his attack potential.
* TenderTears: Orihime has a very gentle, compassionate heart, and seeing people getting injured in front of her, especially if they're trying to protect her, can drive her to tears. During the Arrancar Arc, she is initially fearful of Ichigo's Hollow Mask while he is fighting Grimmjow, fearing that Ichigo will become lost to the Hollow like her brother was. However, once she witnesses him getting hurt, she cries out to him, with tears in her eyes, begging him not to be hurt any more. It strengthens Ichigo's resolve immediately.
However, when given is the choice, Rukia wears loose dresses, reads romance novels and adores cartoon artwork and bunnies while Orihime sometimes wears traditionally boyish clothes and is quietly a black-belt martial artist who is into sci-fi and robots, sharing her boys' comics with her male friends.
* TookALevelInBadass: Orihime's initial strength comes from healing injuries and shielding others from harm with her barrier abilities. However, she doesn't have the mentality required for fighting and battles distress her. During the Arrancar Arc, this enables Aizen to create a hostage scenario that forces Orihime to emotional breaking point. During the TimeSkip that follows this experience, Orihime spends months training to fight in a way that manages her pacifistic world view; she develops the ability to create shields that don't just shield people from harm, they now simultaneously deflect attacks back to onto the attacker. By the finale of the series, she's trusted as a warrior by Ichigo enough that he asks her to come with him for the final battle, and she proves herself able to make shields powerful enough that [[PhysicalGod Yhwach]] can't break them.
* TouchedByVorlons: Ichigo's leaking spiritual pressure awakened her own natural abilities, a feat that was helped by the Hogyoku. Later written material also make her a Fullbringer, revealing part of the reason she gained powers at all was because of Hollow spiritual pressure that was part of her.
* TragicKeepsake: The hairpin she always wears in her hair was the last gift she was given by her older brother before he was killed in a traffic accident.
* TraumaButton: Seeing Ichigo using his Hollow Mask brings up painful memories of her Hollowfied brother, and when he Hollowfies during the final battle against Yhwach she has a flashback to when he lost control against Ulquiorra and is afraid he's done so again. In a subversion, the last one has her recovering her wits soon, contrasting with the first scene where she broke down sobbing.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: Loly and Menoly (mostly the former) sneak into her cell in Las Noches to beat her to a pulp, leaving her face a swollen mess by the time Grimmjow arrived and [[VillainousRescue mauled them both]], yet she took the time to heal them. They try it again while Ichigo is fighting Ulquiorra and once again get mauled, this time by Yammy just to pass time when Ulquiorra won’t let him help. Loly assumes that Orihime must find it hilarious they’re getting roughed up after coming to rough her up... and is stunned when Orihime ''still'' heals her.
* WetBlanketWife: During the Arrancar Arc, an emotionally distressed Orihime was constantly worried about Ichigo getting hurt or injured fighting on her behalf, she even resists Grimmjow by refusing to heal Ichigo if it means enabling the pair to fight again. Her behaviour is so pacifistic for a genre that caters to fans who want to read fights that her lack of battle-appropriate mentality is {{lampshade|Hanging}}d in-universe too. Her strengths instead come from shielding others from harm and healing those that are harmed, and as such they increase as she manages to handle this.
* WindsOfDestinyChange: The core of her powers. The command phrase for her powers is "I reject", as in fate.
* WingdingEyes: Used for gag purposes at the beginning of the Lost Agent arc.
-->'''Ichigo''': How are you doing that? [[LampshadeHanging Your eyes look like 3s]].\
'''Tatsuki's thoughts''': Orihime's really gotten better with her face gags.
* WomenAreDelicate: Throughout the series, she embodies this to a "T" with her unwillingness to cause harm, her dainty and merciful manners and her lack of fortitude whenever confronted with physical viiolence.
* WorldsMostBeautifulWoman: She's considered the most beautiful student at Karakura High. Near the beginning of the series, Kon mentions how all the girls of the school are all above average in looks, and even then Orihime stands out among them. At some point she's followed around by a bunch of completely smitten younger boys; later, when a young man named Moe Shishigawara was tasked with attacking her, a mere look from her (complete with sparkles) was enough to leave him starstruck and unable to attack.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: After Yammy's first visit to the World of the Living leaves Ichigo's friends badly injured, only Rukia is able to fix Ichigo's damaged resolve. Orihime feels a mixture of love and jealousy for Rukia's ability to cheer up Ichigo, not comprehending that her inability to cheer up Ichigo was due to Ichigo's deep guilt over being unable to prevent Orihime from being injured. She pours out her heart to Rangiku, who resolves the situation by pointing out that Ichigo needs both her and Rukia, but in different ways. When Urahara then removes Orihime from the battlefield (for reasons he failed to mention), it is Rukia who steps in to tell Orihime how valued she is and how grateful she is for Orihime's help in rescuing her from execution.

----
Uryu is a Quincy whose initial conflict with the Soul Reapers stems from being forced to watched his grandfather Soken die in battle because the Soul Reapers arrived too late to save him. Soken taught him to never hate and to understand the Soul Reapers were correct to be concerned about the Quincy power to destroy souls, which threatens the balance of worlds. However, Uryu's anger over Soken's death drives him to pick a fight with his classmate Ichigo when he realises that Ichigo has obtained Soul Reaper powers. This triggers the first major plot arc of the story.

Stoic and analytical, Uryu is a nicer person than he likes to admit. He has a natural flair for sewing, but his fashion sense appeals more to women than to men. His vitriolic friendship with Ichigo amuses their mutual friends because of how similar the pair really are. He is the only main character that specialises in long-ranged combat, but he can fight close-quarters when forced to and displays a level of versatility that is not found within the rest of his group.

His Quincy cross manifests a bow called '''''Ginrei Kokaju'''''. After he drinks the blood of Yhwach, he gains the '''''Schrift A - "The Antithesis."''''' The Antithesis allows him to switch anything that has happened between two designated targets; for example, if he was grievously wounded in battle, at any time he can transfer those wounds to his enemy while simultaneously taking on ''their'' condition beforehand for himself, essentially healing himself. The ability can be activated at will with no necessary medium.
----
* AcquiredPoisonImmunity: Subverted. He survives the poison from Mayuri's Bankai thanks to Nemu providing the antidote. When Mayuri uses his Bankai against Szayelaporro while Uryu and Renji are too injured to get out of range, Renji starts to succumb to the poison while Uryu assumes that he'll be safe... and then he starts getting poisoned, too. Mayuri mocks him for assuming that he'd keep using the same poison.
* AdaptationExpansion: The anime adaptation of the ''Thousand-Year Blood War'' includes an additional scene about what Uryu was doing before he joined Vandenreich. It turns out that Uryu was unaware of the organization's existence and he learned everything about the Vandenreich, the first war against the Soul Reapers 1000 years ago, the purge of Quincy 200 years ago and the Auswhalen from Soken's journal. After the invasion, [[spoiler:Haschwalth]] is seen alongside a conflicted Uryu on a rainy day, which leads to Uryu being recruited into the Vandereich by him.
* AdaptedOut: His character is absent in every musical adaptation to date.
* AloofAlly: And he keeps insisting that's all he is even after having been through hell and back to help his friends... sorry, his ''not-friends''.
* AloofArcher: The self-proclaimed last Quincy, Uryu primarily fights with a bow and arrows made of spiritual energy, and takes great pride in maintaining the traditions of his people. He also tends to be stoic and logical, in stark contrast to Ichigo's brash attitude.
* AlternateCharacterReading: Ishida's name is first seen as the #1 listing on the midterm class rankings. Ichigo mistakenly reads the kanji for Uryu (雨竜) aloud as "Ametatsu"...now granted that's a legit first-level reading of the characters but at this point Ichigo and Uryu have been ''in the same class'' for ''months''. Ichigo's classmates take the opportunity to lampshade how oblivious he is to social graces.
* AnArmAndALeg: He gets his arm ripped off as a result in his fight with Ulquiorra. (The anime toned down to Ulquiorra breaking his arm)
* AntiHero: Starts off arrogant and aloof with a [[FantasticRacism deep hatred of Soul Reapers]] and overwhelming confidence in his superiority as a Quincy. Following his EnemyMine with Ichigo, he mellows significantly, but is still aloof.
* AttackBackfire: When he is badly injured, his Schrift allows him to switch his state of being with another person. The damage he has sustained is therefore given to his opponent, leaving him uninjured. His Schrift is called "The Antithesis" and, when Haschwalth learns what it can do, he believes that it can potentially counter Yhwach's Schrift.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Uryu's the most strategic thinker of the Karakura kids. This talent gets to shine in the Fullbring Arc: despite being laid up in the hospital with only third-hand information for most of the arc, Uryu is able to recognize what is really going on in time to save Ichigo from going crazy as the OnlySaneMan. He also deduces, in a matter of minutes, the troubling nature of the substitute Soul Reaper badge, a conclusion it had taken Ichigo a couple weeks to formulate.
%% * BackToBackBadasses: With Ichigo when they fought off a mob of Hollows.
* BadassBoast: Says after defeating Iceringer that the one Aizen should fear is not a Soul Reaper, but a Quincy. This turns out to be far more prophetic than he realized at the time, considering what villains turn up later on in the story.
* BadassBookworm: Uryu is the best performing student of a 300-pupil year group and is also a star performer of the handicraft club. Despite his academic prowess, he's talented enough in battle to have one-shotted both a captain and that captain's Bankai. He's also noted as being the strategist and thinker of Ichigo's group, relying heavily on being able to clinically analyse his opponent's abilities and strategise accordingly even when in the middle of battle.
* BadLiar: He doesn't know it, but he takes after his father in this regard.
** He's not out in the middle of the night because he wants to help Rukia, he's just on the way home from the 24-hour crafts store. [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial And he totally didn't grab that bag at home so he'd have an excuse. Not at all]].
** After he helps save Ichigo, his hands are shredded up so badly he comes to school with bandages up to the elbows. He tells the teacher he fell down the stairs. The entire class thinks he's a lousy liar and that no-one would believe his excuse.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: His bio quote comes from a short exchange with Ulquiorra, who is shocked at the ferocity of Ishida's attacks as he defends Ichigo and Orihime.
* BowAndSwordInAccord: Uryu does have a melee option. He just doesn't use it often and even then he has the option of firing it since it's technically an arrow even if it looks like a sword.
* BroughtDownToBadass: After his use of Letzt Stil in the Soul Society Arc, Uryu loses all his Quincy powers. However, he's still strong and fast enough to be capable of fighting Hollows with advance preparation, and it still takes days of Ryuken wearing him down for Uryu to reach his physical and mental limits.
* BulletProofFashionPlate: Yeah, he's a ranged fighter, but nothing seems to touch this guy in a setting where male characters experience ClothingDamage all the time. Justified in that he keeps extra capes and cloaks on him, and possibly uses his SuperSpeed to sneak in some extra stitching/pinning.
* ChekhovsGunman: He appears in the background several times before being properly introduced. In particular, he is almost certainly the one who was about to intervene during Don Kanonji's "exorcism" before Ichigo charges in.[[note]]Though his face is obscured, the man in question has black hair, is wearing the kind of plain white shirt Uryu wears often, and is spiritually aware enough to know there's a problem, with Uryu being the only known character to fit that criteria.[[/note]]
* CombatPragmatist: Uryu will take this view from time to time. Examples include shooting Szyaelaporro in the throat instantly at first sight, attempting to shoot Ginjo while he was distracted by Ichigo, and smacking down bullies that invade the school from a different school.
* TheComicallySerious: Uryu takes sewing and fashion very seriously. When his Quincy cosplay is PlayedForLaughs, Uryu is distinctly unamused. In fact, as a young child one of his main goals was to redesign Quincy clothing into something more modern and flattering. Every time Uryu mends or makes clothing for people, it has a tendency to end up lacy, frilly and entirely girlish. Or covered in big Quincy crosses. Or both. Girls love the end result, boys definitely do not. Sado observes that Uryu seems to have a talent for women's fashion.
* CrazyPrepared: He carries extra costumes around in case one gets damaged.
* CreepyCrosses: Crosses are all over objects associated with Quincies, as they're humans with strong spiritual power.
* CrossAttack: Quincies use a small cross hung around the wrist as a focus to help generate a bow. Uryu originally uses a Latin cross (4-armed, with a longer descending arm), but replaces it with a star-like 5-armed version in the Arrancar arc.
* CruelMercy: Danced around. After he "befriended" Ichigo, he refused to kill some of his opponents, satisfied in depriving them of their powers. He even offered to spare ''[[ItsPersonal Mayuri]]'', [[HumiliationConga if he apologized for his deeds]].
* CutHimselfShaving: His excuses for turning up in class with bandages/sling are flimsy, and often lampshaded. Not that the teacher cares.
* CynicismCatalyst: His antiheroic cynicism stems from the death of his grandfather, which he believes Soul Society could have prevented. Upon Ichigo pointing out that his grandfather would disagree with his actions, he mellows out somewhat, though he still carries a certain amount of resentment.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: His desperation technique in the Soul Society arc, Letz Stil, makes him incredibly powerful, but at the cost of his Quincy powers.
* DependingOnTheArtist: In the manga Tite Kubo sometimes draws Uryu's Vandenreich uniform differently from one volume to another. When he is first recruited as a member of Vandenreich, Uryu wears a trench-coat uniform with normal white shoes. During Vandenreich's invasion of the Soul King's palace, Uryu is seen wearing white knee-high boots instead of normal shoes. Then when he fights against Haschwalth, Uryu is back wearing the previous uniform. The art from the ''Bleach Brave Souls'' use the uniform with knee-high boots, while the anime adaptation of ''Thousand-year Blood War'' uses the version with normal shoes.
* DistressedDude: In the [[{{Filler}} Bount arc]], he's captured by the enemy while temporarily powerless.
%% * DontYouDarePityMe: Attemps this on Ichigo early in the series. Ichigo's response is more or less to tell him to shut his face.
* EnergyBow: His signature weapon is a pure energy bow of the type where both bow and Heilig Pfeil are made of unmaterialized reishi.
%% * ExplainingYourPowerToTheEnemy: Seele Schneider and more than once. Thankfully, it's not as often as Izuru Kira.
* FakeDefector: When Uryu joins the Vandenreich, everyone is suspicious of his motives. Haschwalth believes that Uryu wants to kill Yhwach to avenge his mother's murder and that Yhwach has him KickedUpstairs to UnexpectedSuccessor in order to restrict his ability to betray them. The Schutzstaffel are also not convinced he can turn against his friends. When Haschwalth obtains The Almighty for the first time, he forces a confrontation between Uryu and Ichigo to reveal Uryu's motives and is proven correct in his suspicions. Believing that it's impossible to defeat Yhwach, Uryu claims it's his intention to use Soken's Sanrei Glove technology, which is keyed to Uryu's reiatsu alone, to blow up the Wahrwelt.
* FashionableAsymmetry: During the Quincy Final Form, the armor gained by the transformation is asymmetrical to protect his right side while still allowing him to draw the bow on his left. It also has a big energy "quiver" sprouting from his right shoulder. After the time-skip, his fringe is arranged asymmetrically to fall long on the right side of his face.
* FireForgedFriends: Ichigo and Uryu initially had animosity for one another (not that it was anything personal, since Ichigo was a Soul Reaper and Uryu was a Quincy). After they are forced to work together to take on a Menos Grande, this ultimately changed.
* {{Foil}}: Lampshaded in-universe. As a Quincy, he's Ichigo's opposite in nearly every way. His power-draining Quincy Final Form even ended up foreshadowing Ichigo's similar Final Getsuga Tensho, his powerlessness afterwards and the TrainingFromHell required to regain that power.
* FreudianExcuse: His generalized hatred for Soul Reapers stems from their involvement in his grandfather's death. Ichigo points out that this is pretty stupid considering his grandfather's teachings, and it turns out Mayuri alone was responsible for the slow response. Uryu's resentment has narrowed accordingly.
* GoodWearsWhite: Uryu is often seen wearing a white outfit, either one of his Quincy uniforms or his normal outfit. Despite his antiheroism, he is firmly on the side of good, as he has no problem aiding Ichigo and his allies to defeat their opponent and protect the innocent.
* HairContrastDuo: Uryu's flat dark hair contrasts with Ichigo's spiky orange hair, reflecting their fire and ice personalities. He also has a contrast with Orihime, who has orange hair and a more openly friendly personality than Uryu.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Namely, the story of the Clan's rise and fall, and Uryu's quest to reclaim his family heritage. Unlike Chad and Orihime, whose dormant powers were awakened by the interaction of the Hogyoku and Ichigo's overflowing Reiatsu, Uryu was born with awakened powers that come with their own MythArc. His motivations are separate from, if often parallel to, his friends' aims. This makes him a better foil for Ichigo.
* IAteWhat: Uryu didn't understand the consequences of ingesting Ywach's blood until Haschwald's exposition.
* IcyBlueEyes: Ulquiorra even lampshaded Ishida's calm, aloof personality by observing he would never have expected Ishida to lose his cool in battle. Ishida simply retorts -- quite calmly -- that he hasn't lost his cool and that's precisely the reason why he's attacking.
* InformedFlaw: According to the Bio in Volume 5, Uryu has [[https://i.pinimg.com/736x/89/7d/89/897d895eef09867f0cea55f45d1ec74d.jpg low blood pressure]]. While he is physically not as strong as Ichigo and is sometimes easily exhausted in battle, Uryu never shows any symptoms of having hypotension, as he always appears healthy and fine. [[note]] In real-life, a mild and non-life threatening hypotension can be cured by self-care treatment from home like adopting appropriate life style choices like eat healthy food, always drinking water and getting enough rest. This is why not all people with hypotension are DelicateAndSickly. If Uryu ''does'' have low blood pressure, this could be explain why he never appears sickly. [[/note]]
* KickedUpstairs: Almost immediately after joining the Vandenreich, Yhwach names him the next Emperor, causing no small amount of shock and confusion amongst the Sternritter. Haschwalth postulates that Yhwach intended for their animosity and suspicion to keep Uryu in check, likely aware that Uryu only joined to avenge his mother.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Ishida is very chivalrous and generally well mannered with a weak spot for women. He's very protective of Orihime and Yoshino from the Bount arc, also tried to protect Rukia when she was powerless, got pissed off at Mayuri for abusing Nemu even before he knew who Mayuri was, and he even spared the life of his female opponent Cirucci, though this may be because Arrancar are simply more human than the normal hollows he cuts down mercilessly.
* LastOfHisKind: Uryu (and through him Ichigo's entire group) believed himself to be the last Quincy. Then they discovered that Uryu was only the last practitioner as his father Ryuuken was the last (retired) master. Then it's indicated that Souken was the only remaining supporter of the old ways and the Vandenreich's discarded his practices, leaving Ryuuken and Uryu as the last traditionalist Quincies. Uryu is also the last mixed-blood Quincy left alive after the Selection of nine years ago. When Ryuken tells Uryu off for using the title "Last Quincy" because he's the one who inherited that title, not Uryu, he does not clarify exactly what the title refers to. [[spoiler:In the final arc, Uryu joins the Vandenreich in the hope of getting close enough to Yhwach to kill him and avenge his mother's murder, leaving his father as the only Quincy in existence who is not a member of the Vandenreich.]]
* LeftHandedMirror: Ichigo and Uryu are designed to be opposites of each other. Ichigo's battle uniform is Japanese clothing, black on white. Uryu's clothing is European, white on black. Ichigo fights close up with a sword, Uryu fights at a distance with archery. Ichigo is impulsive in battle and fights on instinct while Uryu is a thinker and a strategist in battle. Ichigo's powers are Shinigami-dominant and Uryu is a Quincy. The Quincies and Shinigami are mirror opposites of each other, even their souls are aligned as opposites, and the two sides have been at war for a thousand years. Kubo has stated in interviews that Uryu is left-handed to complete the mirroring of Ichigo, and characters [[NotSoDifferentRemark have observed in-universe that the pair aren't that different]] due to their mirrored personalities and abilities complementing each other perfectly.
* LethalHarmlessPowers: Uryu's special ability allows him to designate any two targets and reverse whatever has happened between them. For example, if Uryū were to be greatly injured while fighting an opponent, he could reverse what occurred between himself and his enemy, simultaneously healing himself while grievously wounding his opponent. The lethal nature of it is enough that it is presented as a potential weapon against Yhwach.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Both Ryuken and Soken know why Ryuken hates being a Quincy so much. Neither of them are willing to tell Uryu but Soken does indicate it'll eventually become very important to Uryu's future as a Quincy. It is implied to be that he wants to keep his son safe, although the particulars are still a mystery. Quilge Opie seems to know something, too, but remembers it's supposed to be secret before revealing anything more to Ichigo.
* LongLostRelative: In the final arc it's revealed that Ichigo and Uryu are cousins, as were Ichigo's mother and Uryu's father. When Tsukishima brainwashes Ichigo's family, he inserts himself as the cousin Ichigo and his sisters met at their Grandfather Rin's funeral many years ago. The post-manga novels strongly imply that this was Souken Ishida's funeral and that the cousin Tsukishima temporarily replaced was Uryu.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: When Uryu gets his hand lopped off in the manga, he merely tells Orihime not to worry because he's already taken painkillers and blood-clotters. He then returns to fighting as though nothing has happened, despite the fact being one-handed means he can no longer use his bow.
* MediumAwareness: During the fight against Szayelaporro Grantz, Pesche does [[TrouserSpace something]] that makes him wonder if it's okay for them to air. After the fight, Kurotsuchi does something off-screen, and Ishida claims it was something they ''definitely'' couldn't air.
* MundaneMadeAwesome: He turns the boring art of sewing into an absolutely epic display of juggling plushies while dramatically threading the needle and tackling the problem like he's a fencing master in a theatre production.
* OccultBlueEyes: Played with. Uryu has dark-blue eyes. In anime, it is shown that Antithesis is focused on his eyes. When his Antithesis activates, [[https://64.media.tumblr.com/e236e07ee7ff82571da31d40e367cf0a/946f093954642cf0-7e/s1280x1920/4982faaa6e014cb82a33133ff5a0e8c240aaaa6b.jpg his eyes remain normal, but a faint blue circuity-like markings similar to Blut Vene's mark appear around his scleras]].
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: He appears as a vampire on a Halloween spread, and in a {{filler}} New Year's comedy special as a milk-drinking, blood-avoiding vampiric Quincy ([[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} because, you know, white is associated with Quincies and red with Soul Reapers]]). But, if the only thing missing about his archeries was the pointed ears, he finally gets them in this episode.
%% * OhCrap: When Haschwalth explains what letter assignments mean for the Quincies, Uryu is shocked.
* ParentalAbandonment: Uryu's so estranged from his father that he calls him "Ryuken" instead of "Dad" or "Father". It's implied to be an inverted trope: instead of the usual parent-abandons-child scenario, Uryu disowned his father for refusing to be a Quincy. [[spoiler:In the final arc, Uryu learns the real reason why Ryuken abandoned the Quincies: Yhwach's method of murdering Quincies via Holy Selection leaves behind a magical silver residue. Ryuken was forced to autopsy his own wife's body to collect that silver so that he could forge the only weapon capable of neutralising Yhwach. He gives the arrow to Uryu in the final arc so that Uryu can help Ichigo defeat Yhwach. The epilogue reveals that Uryu and Ryuken have reconciled enough for Uryu to become a doctor at his father's hospital.]]
* PeoplePuppets: Somewhat uniquely, he has the ability to do this to ''himself''. When Mayuri's Shikai paralyses his limbs, he uses a Quincy technique called Ransoutengai to allow his limbs to keep functioning in a manner that's described in-universe as being akin to how a puppeteer controls a puppet.
* TheProudElite: He is the last Quincy, the number one student in his class, and very proud of both. That pride plus his unwillingness to appear soft can make him difficult to get along with, and although he often pretends he cares little for the rest of his group, he has always come through for them.
* RainOfArrows: He's capable of firing up to 1,200 Heilig Pfeil in a ''second'' with his Licht Regen (Rain of Light) technique.
* RememberTheNewGuy: This is how Uryu is introduced into the storyline. He's been Ichigo's classmate from the very start and the highest-scoring student in their entire year group, but he's only officially introduced in Chapter 34. Orihime has to tell Ichigo who he is while Tatsuki lampshades Ichigo's forgetfulness of names in particular and the RunningGag of his obliviousness more generally. When the earlier chapters are re-examined with this in mind, Uryu actually does appear in the background several times (including the Chapter 1 cover), [[{{Foreshadowing}} watching Ichigo]] but never singled out, meaning Kubo [[Administrivia/TropesAreTools deliberately planned]] on invoking this trope.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: When Uryu was first introduced, at one point he was seen spying on Ichigo as he fought a Hollow. All that could be seen of Uryu was a dark silhouette with shining glasses that completely hid his eyes. As a protagonist, his eyes disappear behind the gleam of his glasses every time he's about to turn the tables on his opponent.
* SecretlyWealthy: Uryu doesn't say anything about his family background to the others. He lives in a simple apartment and is estranged from his father due to their conflict about becoming Quincy. As a result no one, with the exception of Ichigo and Orihime since they have already met Ryuken, knows that he actually comes from a rich family and his father is a hospital director. [[https://blacksunradiance.tumblr.com/post/46422904134/bleach-volume-12-sketches In a Volume 12 sketch]], because he doesn't use a cellphone and is rarely contacted by the Handicraft Club seniors, one of his seniors thinks that Uryu is poor.
%% * SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Sensitive Guy to either Ichigo or Renji, depending on the fight.
* ShipperOnDeck: Implied to be this for Ichigo/Orihime, as Uryu at some point is mentally telling Ichigo to win against Ulquiorra for "her [Orihime's] sake"
* SpecsOfAwesome: If he's not excelling academically as the best pupil in his year, he's on the battlefield thrashing his foes. His glasses never come off his nose, not even in the roughest battles. And that's before we get to how awesomely his specs flash when he's showing off his sewing skills.
* StockShonenRival: He was the de facto first example of this during the beginning of the series, being the typical cool, analytical loner that opposed Ichigo only to befriend him later on. This role was eventually taken over by Byakuya Kuchiki, Rukia's incredibly strict older brother, who looked down on Ichigo's defiant attitude towards Shinigami law.
* StoicSpectacles: Uryu plays things close to the chest most of the time giving him an air of being cool, calm and measured. Lampshaded a couple of times in the manga. Ulquiorra is surprised by Uryu's TranquilFury when Ichigo is felled with a massive hole in his chest, but Uryu argues that he's still calm. Also, the manga defends how long it's taken for anything to be revealed about Uryu's MissingMom when Ichigo observes that Uryu's extremely tight-lipped about his family situation.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Uryu and his father are of similar height and share the same rail-thin build, sharp features, and blue eyes. Since Ryuken looks younger than his 40-odd years, they could pass for brothers. Aside from inheriting his mother Kanae's black hair and pensive expressions, Uryu is his father's son from head to toe. Then in flashback, we see how his grandmother looks like during her youth, who sport identical hairstyle with him. Implied that Uryu and his father stern expression are inherited from her.
* StudentCouncilPresident: After the TimeSkip, he succeed Mizuho position as student council president. When a gang from a neighboring school come looking for Ichigo to cause trouble, Uryu intervenes to throw them out of the school grounds (and to spare Ichigo a fight since he's going through a BroughtDownToBadass phase). Ichigo chews Uryu out for fighting since it'll damage the president's reputation.
* SuperMode: There's Quincy: Letzt Stil, of course, but in the novels, Liltotto Lamperd believes that Uryū Ishida is the only remaining Quincy who still has access to his Quincy: Vollständig after Yhwach's defeat, which would imply that he has an unrevealed Vollständig that we haven't seen as of yet.
%% * SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: The flaw with his attempt to pass off intervening with Byakuya and Renji on Rukia's behalf as a late-night trip to the fabric store.
%% * TallDarkAndSnarky: He's very sarcastic and has a tendency to offer wry commentary on the situation.
* TaintedVeins: When Uryu uses Blut Vene against Shutara for the first time, dark circuitry-like markings appear on his hand as reishi is pumped through his veins. Before using Antithesis to [[spoiler: help free Yhwach from Hikifune's Cage of Life]], Uryu's scleras also appear to have faint cyan circuitry-like markings similar to Blut's mark the first time he activates his Schrift.
* TokenRichStudent: While he doesn't care about his family's social status and is able to live independently of his family, compared to his classmates, Uryu is definitely the wealthiest student in Karakura High School. His father is not only a surgeon but also the director of Karakura Hospital, and his family have also lived in a large mansion for a long time. He is rich enough that Ichigo even wonders why he didn't continue his studies in a more prestigious high school for upper-class students like him.
* TrickArrow: Ishida's battle against Cirucci Sanderwicci featured an arrow made of a [[ChainsawGood chainsaw]] [[LaserBlade lightsaber]].
* {{Tsundere}}: It's not like he wants to help Soul Reapers, he just wants the chance to defeat Ichigo properly, or he's [[IWasJustPassingThrough just passing through]], or he wants to restore his honor as a Quincy, or they just happen to have the same goal... and of course they're not friends. Never forget that. Nope, Orihime, don't tell him that he and Ichigo are best friends... or better yet do so, since he looks so comically flustered.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Uryu designed a contest with Ichigo by using Hollow bait to attract weak Hollows. However, Karakura Town was endangered when an excessive number of powerful hollows turned up, including a [[GiantMook Gillian-class Menos Grande]]. This prompted Soul Society to launch an investigation that uncovered Rukia's whereabouts, kick-starting the Soul Society arc. Uryu observes in confusion that such a tiny piece of Hollow bait should never have had such an impact. He's right. Aizen used Uryu's contest as a cover both to test Ichigo's strength and to focus Soul Society on retrieving Rukia.
* {{Vibroweapon}}: Seele Schneider's blade is composed of Reishi that vibrates at three million times a second, giving it the shredding effect of a chainsaw.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Most of his interactions with Ichigo consist of them snarking at each other, though by now it seems they're just doing it out of habit.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Uryu's motivation to improve his skill comes in part from a desire to prove the worth of the Quincy legacy to Ryuken.
* TheWorfBarrage:
** His ''Sprenger'' has yet to completely defeat an opponent despite its great power, except in ''Hell Verse'' where it is used to kill Taikon.
** Licht Regen does virtually nothing to Ulquiorra. Uryu knew what he was getting into.
* WorldsStrongestMan: [[DiscussedTrope Discussed]] and ultimately [[SubvertedTrope subverted]]. Uryu doesn't appear to be any stronger than the average Quincy, but more than one character has theorized that Uryu has the potential to become one of the strongest Quincies to ever live. Yhwach himself even states that his power could possibly surpass even his own, and makes note that Uryu surviving his purge is so unusual, that he must be something truly special. His Schrift, 'The Antithesis', allows him to reverse the situation between himself and his enemy; he can transfer any wounds he sustained in a fight to his enemy, healing himself in the process. Haschwalth believes that it is one of the only abilities that could be a threat to [[WindsOfDestinyChange The Almighty]] itself. However, while Uryu is indeed quite powerful, he never really did reach his full potential.
* WouldHitAGirl: Given that he shot ''Seele Schneider'' on Cirucci, he has no problem with this.
* YouKilledMyFather: Uryu pulls this on Mayuri, who killed his grandfather. Although he defeated Mayuri, the issue has never been fully resolved.

----
A huge, quiet man, Chad is Ichigo's oldest friend. As a young child, he was a bully until his grandfather taught him to raise his fist only to protect instead of hurt. Chad therefore vowed to his grandfather that he'd never fight for selfish reasons, not even to protect himself from bullies. His friendship with Ichigo began when Ichigo intervened to protect him from bullies and offered Chad a deal: Ichigo would protect Chad if Chad protected him. Chad has protected Ichigo's back ever since.

Chad began to develop spiritual awareness while helping Rukia fight Shrieker, a Hollow that had killed a young boy whose spirit Chad was trying to help. This didn't properly manifest into usable power until he saved Ichigo's sister Karin from the Hollow attacks that had been instigated by Uryu's conflict with Ichigo. His power manifested as a Fullbring, '''''Brazo Derecha de Gigante''''' ("Right Arm of the Giant"), encasing his right arm in armor, vastly increasing his fighting strength and granting him the ability to fire energy blasts. He later improved his Fullbring, unlocking '''''Brazo Izquierda del Diablo''''' ("Left Arm of the Devil"), encasing his left arm in armor capable of delivering a powerful energy-infused punch.
----
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Chad was the subject of jokes or bullies because of his mixed racial appearance and that he never fought back.
* BadassNormal: Before his powers manifested, he beat up a Hollow by tearing a telephone pole out of the ground and beating it senseless. He gets bonus points because [[InvisibleToNormals he couldn't even see it]]; Rukia was telling him where to aim.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: The simple, yet complex reason why he and Ichigo are friends. Specifically, Chad took a beating for Ichigo when the latter was getting beaten up by a gang. Later on, Ichigo rescued Chad from the same gang and saved the [[TragicKeepsake coin]] given to Chad by his grandfather. After the latter incident, they both made a vow to fight for and to protect each other.
%% * BewareTheNiceOnes: He's a gentle guy...who also has terrifying strength and knows how to use it.
%% * BewareTheQuietOnes: Chad has even taken out an opponent while remaning completely quiet.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Chad is very protective of those who need defending. He put his life on the line for Yuuichi and Karin against Hollows before his powers even manifested.
%% * TheBigGuy: Chad has the most destructive strength of his friends.
* BrattyHalfPint: As a child, Chad would use his size to intimidate other kids and hit any kid who annoyed him.
%% * BruiserWithASoftCenter: He's a heavy hitter with a soft spot for cute things.
* ButNotTooForeign: He's half-Japanese and half-Mexican, and was bullied over his unusual appearance when he was younger.
* CurbStompBattle: Most of his fights put him on the giving or receiving end of one of these. He's twice been able to defeat a semi-powerful yet lower mook of an arc, only to get taken down quickly by a much higher level opponent.
* FightingFromTheInside: He questions why the Soul Reapers are apparently helping Ichigo fight the villain, which he's been mind-controlled into thinking is a friend. Tsukishima's retaliation to his doubts about the past he created is an attempted MindRape which is foiled by Urahara and Isshin.
%% * FriendshipMoment:
%% ** How Chad became friends with Ichigo is very heartwarming, and the lengths Chad will go to to protect his friends is incredibly touching.
%% ** Also, Orihime doesn't forget to tell Ichigo that during the time he was depowered, both she ''and'' Chad did their best to get physically stronger and wait until he gets his powers back.
%% * FromBadToWorse: It's starting to become a tradition in the series; the moment Chad loses a fight the story takes a [[CerebusSyndrome darker turn]].
* GentleGiant: He's by far the tallest of the group but he's very soft-spoken and loves cute things. He's even tried hugging Kon in the past, much to Kon's horror.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: When he finds Ichigo slumped on the battlefield in a funk of depression, he physically lifts Ichigo and throws him into a wall before yelling some sense into his head. Sado handles learning the truth about Uryuu's defection better than Ichigo does and is capable of bring Ichigo round quickly.
%% * {{Hunk}}: Since he's both TheBigGuy, figuratively and literally, and an example of TallDarkAndHandsome; he qualifies.
%% * InSeriesNickname: He's rarely called by his birth name. Only "Chad".
* MadeOfIron: Before his powers awakened, he was capable of shrugging off being hit by a giant steel girder that fell from a great height. Despite being often overpowered by strong foes, Sado regularly manages to pull through, and keep fighting, which considering he often fights people significantly more powerful than him, is a testiment to his durability.
* MartialPacifist: For all his great strength and fighting ability, Sado was taught by his grandfather to never use his fists in a bad way. As a result, Sado only ever fights to protect others and won't raise a finger to protect himself or fight for the wrong cause, and later channels his strength into a successful boxing career.
* MultipleChoicePast:
** Chad originally tells Ichigo he's from Okinawa. Later on, he tells Ichigo he's from Mexico. When Ichigo calls him out on the inconsistency, Chad pretends he can't remember ever telling Ichigo he came from Okinawa. Eventually, he admits he was telling the truth both times: he was born in Okinawa until his parents were killed when he was eight, whereupon he was sent to Mexico to live with his grandfather.
** The Anime creates one of these by changing Chad's background with his grandfather. In the manga, Chad's grandfather lectured him on fighting only to protect instead of to cause pain and Chad took those words to heart, making a promise to do exactly that. The anime changes this to Chad's grandfather getting beaten up by the parents of the people Chad had beaten up and Chad, in horror, mends his ways and makes a vow to never raise his fists for himself again.
%% * NiceGuy: Chad is loyal, non-violent, gentle, and friendly.
* NoShirtLongJacket: In the final arc, Sado wears a short-sleeved, high collar jacket that ends at his knees and exposes his shirtless chest.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: The Soul Reapers typically take center stage, so much of Chad's BadassDecay can be contributed to this.
* PermaStubble: Has acquired a nice goatee following the timeskip.
* PowerFist: His Fullbring manifests as two of these:
** His right arm transforms into a black appendage with red markings called Brazo Derecha de Gigante, which can be used to charge an attack called El Directo or transform into a shield to block attacks.
** His left arm transforms into a white appendage with red markings called Brazo Izquierda del Diablo, which can unleash a powerful punch called La Muerte, which carves a skull-shaped crater into whatever is behind the target.
%% * TheQuietOne: Even his SweatDrop is subdued. He talks more in the Full Bring arc that he had in all previous seasons combined.
* RaisedByGrandparents: His parents died when he was a little boy, so he spent a good part of his life under the watch of a Mexican CoolOldGuy named Oscar Joaquin de la Rosa, whom he referred to as "abuelo" (Spanish for grandfather).
%% * RealMenWearPink: He's as obsessed with cute things as Rukia.
%% * SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Has traits of ''both'' types; he's Manly Man to Ishida and Sensitive Guy to Ichigo.
* ShipperOnDeck: When Chad asks Ichigo what he thinks of Orihime's dress, Ichigo becomes flustered and this causes Yoruichi to berate him for not complimenting Orihime's appearance. Few later Chad, Ichigo and Orihime are attacked by monsters, and when Ichigo pretty much cradles Orihime close to protect her, Chad gives him a thumbs-up.
* ShirtlessScene: In the ''Thousand Year old Blood War'' arc, Urahara puts Chad in an outfit that looks almost taken from ''Literature/ArabianNights'' and includes this.
%% * TheStoic: He displays little emotion except when something he cares about is in danger.
%% * TallDarkAndHandsome: Maybe not in the stereotypical pretty boy way.
* ThrowTheDogABone: In the finale, after spending the vast majority of the series serving little story purpose beyond jobbing like a champ to show how serious a new threat is, [[spoiler: Ichigo points out he's the only one of the circle of friends to become wealthy and famous, after he starts a mundane but successful boxing career.]]
* TouchedByVorlons: He was born with spiritual power which Aizen posits was locked away until awakened by Ichigo's Reiatsu and the Hogyoku. It's eventually revealed that Fullbringers are born with their power because one of their parents survived a Hollow attack, which left behind a residue that was passed on to their offspring via tainting the mother.
* TragicKeepsake: The coin he wears around his neck originally belonged to his grandfather who is now deceased.
* TheWorfEffect: The go-to guy for this trope. Tite Kubo has used him to establish the threat-level of captains (defeated by Kyouraku), Fracciones (Ichigo just barely managed to prevent him from being one-shotted by D-Roy, the weakest of Grimmjow's Fraccions), and Nnoitra. And the multiple power-ups Chad gets between these fights don't seem to help in the slightest.
* YoungerThanHeLooks: He looked like an adult even at ''sixteen''.

!!Kazui Kurosaki
[[quoteright:195:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kazui_0.png]]
[-''"Me...? I'm Kazui Kurosaki. I'm kind of a Soul Reaper too!"''-]
->'''Species:''' Human-Soul Reaper hybrid
->'''Zanpakuto:''' Unknown
----
Kazui Kurosaki is a human with Soul Reaper powers and the son of Ichigo and Orihime Kurosaki. Bubbly, curious, and adventurous, he enjoys running around his father's old hideaways and hangouts. He has inherited his father's Soul Reaper powers and is able to become a Soul Reaper at will. He has a Zanpakuto with a ''tsuba'' in the shape of a manji, reminiscent of his father's Bankai. Despite coming from two loving parents, something is a little off with Kazui's demeanor when he confronts the morbid and the strange...
----
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''azui '''K'''urosaki.
* AmbiguousInnocence: [[spoiler: The fact he cheerfully opened a Gate to Hell brings some suspicion to his innocence.]]
* CallBack: His Zanpakuto's sealed form heavily resembles Tensa Zangetsu's original form, being a katana with a manji-shaped hilt. Also, his meeting with Ichika Abarai, Rukia and Renji's daughter, mirrors how Ichigo met Rukia in the first place: with her coming out of nowhere into Ichigo's room, introducing herself as a Soul Reaper before being shocked by his spiritual power.
* CheerfulChild: Is never seen showing anything but delight or surprise all throughout the one chapter he appears in. When Ichika points a sword at him and tries to bully him, his response to smile and show off his own Soul Reaper abilities. A page of Kubo's artbook that depicts Kazui as a middle school student shows him beaming while looking at the viewer, in contrast to a frowning and stern Ichika.
* CreepyChild: Kazui treats the [[spoiler:Gate to Hell]] as a plaything, something that freaks out Kon. The opening narration of the Bleach Special chapter implies that Kazui is the narrator. Just see the opening lines below and judge whether this is coming from the mind of a healthy person:
-->''When I was little, I owned two goldfish. They were cute and I loved them a lot. But at some point, the larger one died. The remaining goldfish seemed to feel lonely and so did I while observing it. But from that day...the little goldfish I thought had stopped growing, began to grow bigger and bigger...and continue to grow healthier. Seeing that made me relieved. Ahh, I'm glad.'' '''[[WhamLine It was a good thing that the larger one died]].'''
* CuriousAsAMonkey: Seems to love exploring and is more intrigued than freaked out by Yhwach's remnants than anything, reaching out to touch them even though they scare Captain-level shinigami half-to-death.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindows: His eyes are an amber-orange that match his hair.
* FreeRangeChildren: As mentioned, Kazui is an [[CuriousAsAMonkey energetic little scamp]] who often wanders off by himself. But he never gets into too much trouble and the Shun Shun Rikka lets Mom know where he is at all times. Kazui himself is also far from helpless and the other spiritually-aware individuals of Karakura Town (i.e. the Visored) seem to know who he is.
* GenerationXerox: Kazui grew up in the Kurosaki clinic, has innate spiritual powers inherited from his father and mother, and bumps into another young Soul Reaper when she spontaneously appears in his house. This along with his StrongFamilyResemblance makes Kazui a more cheerful version of his father.
* HeinzHybrid: His father is a Human-Soul Reaper-Quincy-Hollow-Fullbringer while his mom also possesses powers, making him some mixture of human, Hollow, and Quincy by default.
* HeroesPreferSwords: He has a zanpakuto with a tsuba shaped like the original form of Tensa Zangetsu's on his back while using his Soul Reaper abilities.
* LamarckWasRight: Inherits Ichigo's Soul Reaper powers just like Ichigo did from his own father. Interestingly enough, Kazui does not seem to need to separate from his physical body the way his father and grandfather do when using them, instead manifesting his powers over his clothes similarly to his father's Fullbring. Also, while it may have been a one-off gag, Kazui may have inherited his father's trademark SuperSpeed, with Hiyori saying that Kazui "runs like the wind", vanishing from sight after just one panel.
* LineageComesFromTheFather: He inherited Soul Reaper powers from his father, and activates them in a manner similar to Ichigo's Fullbring. His zanpakuto even resembles his father's (former) Bankai, the original form of Tensa Zangetsu.
* PatchworkKids: Kazui has his father's face and hair colour, and his mother's eyes and smile. As a result, he manages to look like both Ichigo and Orihime at the same time. His hair also spikes up like Ichigo's when drawn as a teenager in one of Kubo's artbooks.
* SuperMode: He activates his Soul Reaper powers in much the same way as his father's Fullbring, manifesting a Shihakushō uniform and zanpakuto over his clothes.
* SuperSpeed: He can vanish from other people's sight in the span of a single panel. Hiyori mutters that he can "run like the wind".

!!Ichika Abarai
[[quoteright:195:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ichika_2.png]]
[-''"I'm Ichika Abarai! A Soul Reaper apprentice!"''-]
->'''Species:''' Soul Reaper
->'''Zanpakuto:''' Unknown
----
Ichika Abarai is the daughter of Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai. An apprentice Soul Reaper, she is brash and aggressive, and has a zanpakuto with a lightning bolt-shaped tsuba. Despite portraying a tough front, she does have a soft spot for Kazui and can get freaked out if she's tackling something beyond her abilities.
----
* BigWhat: She boastfully introduces herself as a Soul Reaper to Kazui, while holding him at sword point. His response is not what she expected: when he cheerfully tells her that he's a Soul Reaper, too, she lets out a shocked yell.
* TheBully: When Ichigo expresses concern that Ichika has wandered away from her parents without their knowledge, Rukia tells him not to worry because a Soul Reaper has nothing to fear from human opponents. This merely increases Ichigo's worry because he interprets Rukia's words to mean that Ichika likes bullying helpless humans. When she appears in front of Kazui, she introduces herself to Kazui by [[SwordPointing pointing her sword]] to his face, implying this is at least true to an extent, although this may be because she's just HotBlooded.
* DaddysGirl: She adores her father's company and starts crying out in fear when Renji is attacked and about to be killed by Szayelaporro. Luckily Ichigo steps in to save them.
* FieryRedhead: Ichika inherited her father's red hair and her parents' brash attitude, being energetic and passionate.
* FreeRangeChildren: Like Kazui, it's apparently normal for Ichika to go off on her own despite being a child. Unlike Kazui, her parents are ''terrible'' at keeping tabs on her and are remarkably happy-go-lucky when faced with the prospect of Ichika potentially abusing some humans or spirits with her Soul Reaper powers.
* LuminescentBlush: Ichika turns bright red at the mere thought of being romantically involved with Kazui.
* MeaningfulName: "Ichika" (苺花) means "Strawberry Flower" and was given the name in honor of Rukia and Orihime's friendship; she is named after Orihime's favorite flower.
* OhCrap: When she sees the Hollows about to attack her fellow Shinigami and when Szayelaporro sets his sights on her and Renji, voicing out ''exactly'' what he's going to do to them...
* SignatureHairDecs: While she ties her hair back into the same spiky ponytail as her father, her ribbon is tied into a much more feminine bow than Renji's simple, practical binding.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She has her mother Rukia's features (especially her eyes) and her father Renji's hair. As a teenager, her resemblance to her mother becomes even more apparent, inheriting Rukia's beauty.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: Despite having great potential as a Shinigami due to having ''two'' Captain level parents, Ichika is still a young girl at heart, no matter how hard she tries to prop herself up, and she freezes up in fear at the sight of [[spoiler:Szayelaporro and his Hell powers]]. She has to be saved by her father and Ichigo to avoid dying.
* SwordPointing: When introducing herself to Kazui, she draws her zanpakuto and points it at him.
* {{Tsundere}}: When Ikkaku asks if she wants to see Kazui, she fiercely denies it and says they ''aren't'' anything at all with a blush on her face. Funny thing is that Ikkaku only meant it as seeing Kazui ''in person'', not seeing him as a ''love interest''.
