Beware if you are not updated with the manga.'''[[note]]Be mindful of the fact that, because of the cognizant nature of Titan Shifters discussed on this page, there are tropes that WILL overlap unavoidably with the trope entries of their individual holders because the characters happen to be one and the same, regardless of form.[[/note]]

Titans are the [[BigBad primary antagonists]] of ''Manga/AttackOnTitan''. They are a mysterious race of humanoid giants that appeared roughly a century ago and quickly hunted down humanity to the point of near-extinction.

Aside from their size and speed, the real danger of a Titan is their HealingFactor which allows them to regenerate from almost any wound. The only way to kill a Titan is to carve out a precise spot of flesh on their nape. Lacking any kind of reproductive or digestive organs, it appears as though they hunt and eat humans purely because they want to.

In time, the siege of Titans brought along the appearance of individual Titans capable of conscious decisions. The Battle of Trost revealed a young cadet [[note]]Eren Yeager[[/note]] who has the capacity of transforming into a Titan, opening the possibility that such conscious Titans (later denominated as '''Titan Shifters''') are truly humans in hiding.

Titans are initially divided into two main classes, based upon their behavior. The regular Titans behave like DumbMuscle, with little or no signs of intelligence and make up the bulk of encountered Titans. More dangerous are the rarer Aberrant Titans, erratic and unpredictable Titans that display unusual behaviors. As the series goes on, it's shown that morose Titans can turn Aberrant given the right stimulus, making the classification obsolete.

!!Tropes that apply to Titans:
* AchillesHeel: They're not ''precisely'' NighInvulnerable: their bodies are actually relatively fragile and easily damaged. What makes them dangerous is their [[HealingFactor ability to regenerate from almost any wound]]. The only way to kill them is to target a precise spot on the back of their neck.
* AmbiguousGender: Most are ostensibly male, due to a lack of [[BarbieDollAnatomy gender indicators]], though a few have beards. A tiny few are unambiguously female, like the [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Female]] Titan. Also, the [[spoiler:House, Smiling, and Jaws I Titans have known female human forms]]. This indicates their appearance should not be trusted.
* AlmightyIdiot: Pure Titans are large, strong, effectively immortal should no one strike their AchillesHeel, but in exchange are mostly incapable of complex thought or doing anything else besides instinctively devouring humans [[spoiler:or following the orders of the Founding Titan]].
* AlwaysChaoticEvil: The Titans seem to enjoy destroying human civilization for no other reason than they enjoy doing it. At least, that's the case for the "normal" {{Mook}} Titans. The Titan Shifters, on the other hand, have more complex motivations. [[spoiler:Later subverted in that they're ''all'' Titan Shifters, but "normal" Titans are simply trapped in Titan form and unable to control their actions. The reason that normal Titans aggressively consume humans is because [[TragicMonster eating humans is the only way for them to turn them into Titan Shifters and give them their sapience back]].]]
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:As mentioned above, every Titan in existence is a shifter trapped in Titan form, unable to control their actions or escape. Ymir described her time as a Titan as "an endless nightmare" that lasted for sixty years.]]
* ApeShallNeverKillApe: Normal Titans never attack other normal Titans. The only exceptions are when a Titan Shifter is involved, or [[spoiler:Eren uses his Coordinate powers to focus his anger enough on a specific target, causing them to follow his will and target the object of his rage.]]
* AttackItsWeakPoint: Destroying a precise spot on the nape right along the neck is the only (known) way to defeat a Titan. Later revelations indicate that this is where [[spoiler:the original human body is fused into]] the Titan body. While the military are chiefly taught to use swords with replaceable blades made of hardened steel; any sufficient damage to this area will do the job, be it a strike from a Titan Shifter or a shot from a cannon. The problem is that the cannons and fire arms available to humanity lack the accuracy to reliably strike the weak point, thus necessitating the blades for precision strikes.
** While not fatal, damaging the eyes is incredibly painful for Titans, and can cause enough pain to be a temporary distraction. Levi is seen stabbing them in the eyes and detaching the blades to prevent the healing factor from just erasing the damage.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: The largest (15 meters tall) of the Titans are about this size. And, of course, the [[GiantMook Colossal]] [[{{Kaiju}} Titan.]]
* AxCrazy: The regular Titans are largely rabid beasts that enjoy terrorizing and killing humans. It’s ambiguous how aware they are of their surroundings even after some startling revelations about their origins, but it’s clear they are not acting in their right minds.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: They lack not only sex organs but also secondary sexual characteristics such as nipples and body hair. Though a few seem to possess facial hair. [[spoiler:This is because they're created from transformed humans and are essentially biological HumongousMecha. They don't reproduce and aren't born, so they have no genitals or belly buttons.]]
* BlessedWithSuck: This turns out to be the truth of their existence after the reveal in Chapter 88. [[spoiler:"Normal" Titans are nigh-invulnerable due to their healing factor and don't age, thus can go on living for centuries, and don't need external sources of sustenance, seemingly getting everything they need from sunlight and the ambient environment. On the flip-side, they are forever trapped in a walking nightmare, without any conscious control of their actions, and are instinctively compelled to eat, or attempt to eat, any human they stumble across, not for nutrition (because they lack a proper digestive system), but for the hope of chancing upon a Titan Shifter, and regaining their humanity. For Titan Shifters, it's worse. In exchange for the power to transform into a Titan and back again at will, and their snazzy healing factor that allows them to regenerate even lost limbs, the transformation requires deliberate injury, and once their ability is revealed, they are routinely hunted by humans, and even fellow Shifters on occasion, and by "normal" Titans regardless; can easily slip back into "mindless" Titan form if they overexert themselves; are plagued by nightmares in the form of memories from the previous host of their Titan powers, even the memory of the previous host getting eaten alive, which can manifest without warning, even while fully awake; and to top it all off, once that power awakens, even unaware, their lifespan is reduced to the next 13 years. Oh, and if you haven't found some poor sod to eat you before then, some random baby from your own race will "inherit" this from you. Time and distance do not serve to avert this in any way.]]
* BodyHorror: Some of the more [[GrotesqueGallery deformed Titans]] have this, to varying degrees. [[spoiler:It is also revealed that regular Titans have assimilated their human body into the Titan form, with only the spinal cord and brain remaining separate]].
* BrainFood: It's been observed that Titans largely follow the the [[OurZombiesAreDifferent zombie archetype]], and this extends to the fact that [[spoiler:they're after human nervous systems, since by consuming the spinal fluid of a Titan shifter, they can become one themselves.]]
* CannibalismSuperpower: Hange speculates that [[spoiler:they can absorb the powers of those they devour -- namely, becoming a Titan Shifter after devouring one. This leads to further speculation that this is the true reason Titans instinctively devour humans: finding and eating a Titan Shifter would restore their humanity. It is later confirmed by Ymir's backstory and Eren ingesting the "hardening" factor.]]
* CannonFodder: Just as much as the Survey Corps, mindlessly attacking until killed.
* ConditionalPowers:
** Titans are shown to be fueled by sunlight, either dozing off immediately or after a couple of hours after being deprived of it. The mere reflection light provided by moonlight itself can rouse them too, though this is not universal. As such, in the situation where the Survey Corps are patrolling in the middle of the night, they are at risk of being attacked by these "Moonlight Titans" should there be enough moonlight on that given night.
** [[spoiler:As revealed in Grisha Yeager's account of the Eldian Restoration Movement, the Kingdom of Marley keeps Eldians alive in the ghettos because only Eldians can be transformed into Titans (as Ymir's People).]]
* ConfusionFu: Most Titans move relatively slowly for their size, grab the closest humans, and attempt to kill them, usually by eating them. Aberrants crawl, jump, run, and have no reasonable pattern to predict who they attack or where they go.
* DatedHistory: The classification system employed by the military was rendered obsolete by two different aspects:
** The Titan Shifters' appearance threw a wrench as to the capabilities that the Titans had thus shown, rendering the "aberrant" term inexact.
** A normal Mindless Titan can easily turn into an Aberrant with the right stimulus. This stimulus comes from three aspects: A Shifter prompting the Titans to gang up, Eren Yeager's use of the Coordinate, and the prompt from a member of the Royal Family who is a Shifter (as shown by Zeke Yeager's Beast Titan).
* DeathByIrony: Many Titans are responsible for their own deaths. Special mention goes to the Titans who respectively severely injured and ate Eren in Chapter 8, which wind up being the main reason for his awakening as a Titan Shifter, and wind up being amongst his first and most brutal kills.
** [[spoiler:The Smiling Titan is eaten alive after eating another one of Eren's loved ones and angering him enough to awaken his ability to Command Titans.]]
* DissonantSerenity: Most of them have a creepy CheshireCatGrin plastered on their faces as they devour every human they can find.
* DistressCall: The Female Titan and Beast Titan are shown to be able to attract other Titans with their scream. [[spoiler:Reiner also uses one to signal Bertolt for help, though it hasn't been shown whether or not he possesses the same ability to draw in other Titans.]]
* DumbMuscle: Most Titans are as unintelligent as they are destructive.
* EatenAlive: The fate of any human unlucky enough to get caught in their grasp. In fact, the Smiling Titan is the ''only'' mindless Titan seen thus far to bother killing one of its victims before eating them. However, there have been sporadic instances where eaten people have survived being eaten (like Eren Yeager), and even regurgitated (like [[Characters/AttackOnTitanBeforeTheFall Kuklo]], who was born after his pregnant mother was regurgitated). [[spoiler:The Titans will also attempt to eat any Titan shifter they come across as well, and they can be commanded to eat other Mindless Titans by the user of the Coordinate]]. [[spoiler:This is also what transfers Titan Powers from one holder to the next.]]
* EliteMook: Aberrant Titans show intelligence and sometimes strange mutations that cause them to be unpredictable. It's later implied that all Mindless Titans can turn Aberrant with the right stimulus.
* EyeScream: The only time Titans reliably show visible pain is severe eye damage. This makes eye-stabbing a viable tactic since this blinds them and creates a vulnerable period for the humans to take advantage of.
* FatBastard: Most of them are drawn like overweight humanoid males.
* FeelNoPain: Some of the time they react to major injuries, but not nearly as much as a human would. The only exception is [[EyeScream the eyes]], which are the only point that causes them distressing pain until the healing factor kicks in.
* FleshEatingZombie: A gross summary of Titans, in regards to their intelligence and their appetite.
* GiantEqualsInvincible: Subverted. Their bodies are actually relatively fragile, and conventional weapons work just fine to damage them. The problem comes from their ability to regenerate and the fact that they don't seem to feel pain.
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: Well, from humanity's point of view it's more like ''bad'' thing they can heal, but this is the reason you've got to hit their nape- they'll just heal from any other injury.
* GrotesqueGallery: Many are deformed and are weirdly disproportionate. A handful of them simply look to be a gross parody of the human body.
* GuiltFreeExterminationWar: Nobody has any problems with killing them.
** [[spoiler:The Mindless Titans were sent by Marley by Titanizing the Eldians of their ghettos in order to besiege the Three Walls and exterminate the remaining Eldians. In order to take control of the Island of Paradis, the Marleyans sent the Warriors to infiltrate the Eldian populace and recover the Coordinate in favor of Marley]].
** [[spoiler:As a result of the Survey Corps Uprising and the Battle of Shinganshina, which saw the retake of Wall Maria, the Military Junta enacted the total extermination of the extant Mindless Titans outside the Three Walls. This meant that for the first time in a century, the Eldians are once again the masters of the Island of Paradis]].
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe:
** Titans aren't particularly picky about what goes into their mouth, so Titan attacks are characterized by dismemberment, maiming, and people bitten in half. Considering that they don't actually ''need'' to eat people per-se, getting a good chunk, or most of the person works just as well. The aftermath, as such, consists of the cleanup of random pieces of people.
** [[spoiler: There's a reason they do this; they have to consume the spinal fluid of a titan shifter to return to being human. When Eren got eaten for the first time the Titan failed to chew through his neck and Eren ended up triggering the transformation in the titan's stomach instead of transferring the power to the Titan. Similarly, the Marley Shifters try to capture Eren by swallowing him whole; if they bit into him they run the risk of mixing his titan with theirs, thereby reducing the number of Titans Marley could potentially control.]]
* HealingFactor: The first part of what makes them so dangerous is that they can regenerate lost body parts in a very short amount of time.
* HobblingTheGiant: While their HealingFactor is strong enough to come back from this, the Survey Corps, particularly Levi, will often target the ankles and the backs of the knees to bring Titans down, buying them some crucial time to target the nape. Shifters aren't nearly as vulnerable to this tactic unless you're an incredibly fast and precise super-badass like Levi.
* HollywoodDensity: For beings that massive and strong, Titans are surprisingly lightweight. The in-universe mechanics that allow Titans to operate in the first place have yet to be explained, but it's shown that their bodies are somewhat translucent and more ephemeral than those of regular living beings, implying that the matter content of their bodies is certainly less dense; they readily vanish into nothingness once they're slain, their blood also evaporates upon contact with air in a matter of seconds, and other tissues, as shown in the anime, undergo a process resembling combustion. Due to the sheer amount of steam they produce, it's possible that the mechanics involve hydraulics somehow.
* HumanoidAbomination: To summarize: They are large, fast, mindless, physics-defying, and came out of nowhere. They are numberless yet they do not seem to have any methods of reproduction. They don't even possess any [[BarbieDollAnatomy sex organs]] or secondary sex characteristics. They have a healing factor, which means that destroying their heads does not really slow them down. The grossest part, is they probably do not need to eat humans. They have no digestive organs and after filling their stomach with humans, they just vomit it all out and eat more. They were able to eat most of humanity to extinction. [[spoiler:As far as the people within the walls know.]]
* ImAHumanitarian: They don't eat animals and they actually don't need to eat to survive.
* KillAllHumans: Seemingly their goal; they don't need to eat humans because they don't suffer hunger and even ignore other animals. [[spoiler:Actually, their goal is to eat someone who happens to be a Titan Shifter so they can become Shifters themselves. They eat humans randomly because they have no way of telling Titan Shifters apart from the regular humans.]] Mindless Titans will eat men, women, children and the elderly without any regard. [[spoiler:It's later shown that they eat not only Eldians, but peoples of other nations as well, even though their fundamental purpose for eating people is to find an Eldian Titan Shifter so that they can turn back into humans. However, this implies that they lack the capacity to discern between Eldians and non-Eldians, explaining why they've been used throughout history by the Eldians and the Marleyans as the first line of attack in war, as they'll eat anyone who crosses their path]].
* LightningBruiser: The second part of what makes Titans so dangerous is that they are ''incredibly'' fast while being very powerful, especially in the case of Aberrant Titans.
* LosingYourHead: Titans will survive decapitation since they can regenerate. However, it turns out to be the ''true'' method of killing a Titan. Slicing out the nape of the Titan's neck [[OffWithHisHead incidentally decapitates ]] [[spoiler:what remains of the fused human form inside]].
* LotusEaterMachine: When Eren loses control of his Titan form, he's stuck in a MentalWorld of his family during happier times and begins to be assimilated into it[[spoiler:, implying this to be the case for other Titans.]]
* MadeOfPlasticine:
** Played with. High-explosive ordinance and blades made of super-hardened steel rip right through Titans, as noted by Hange. However, most other weapons are ineffective at damaging them; small arms fire only works to slow them down by aiming for their eyes, and as Sasha found out, several strong swings with an axe barely even dents their weak spot.
** [[spoiler:As shown by the Marleyan Army, Titans can be killed via sharpshooting with a powerful enough weapon in round speed and ballistic size (as the ordinance mounted on the Cart Titan)]]
* TheMagicGoesAway: [[spoiler:The Survey Corps killing Eren Yeager turned all the titanized Eldians, including the Titan Shifters, into regular humans, and freeing Ymir Fritz and the deceased Eldians from the Paths.]]
* {{Mook}}: The "normal" DumbMuscle Titans, though they are still pretty dangerous.
* MonstrousHumanoid: [[spoiler:Possibly subverted: ALL Titans are human.]]
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: A common trait among Titans. Strangely enough, most have flat teeth like a herbivore as opposed to the sharpened teeth you'd associate with a strict carnivore. It doesn't really slow them down any, though.
* MorphicResonance: [[spoiler:All mindless Titans tend to share at least one physical trait with their human forms, such as Dina and Armin's Titans sharing their respective hairstyles. In fact, some Titans look exactly the same as they did when they were human]].
* NoBiologicalSex: Titans lack any kind of sexual organ, and do not appear to have any means of reproduction. Most have a masculine physique, with the Female Titan named as such since she's the first one seen to have a ''distinctly'' feminine build. Other than that, there are Titans who have distinctive female facial features. [[spoiler:And some with female human forms.]]
* NoBodyLeftBehind: Titans rapidly dissolve after death, which is a good thing for cleanup but makes researching them difficult.
* NonhumansLackAttributes: Besides their lack of nipples or genitalia, they're also noted to lack a lower digestive tract or navels. [[spoiler:Justified, as they're a biological weapon born from injecting a human with titanization serum, and don't reproduce the normal way.]]
* NonMaliciousMonster: They devour humans on instinct, not any particular malicious intent. They don't have the intelligence to target anyone in particular. [[spoiler:The reason they eat people is to complete their transformations into Titan Shifters, as they can only re-gain human form if they eat a Shifter and gain their Titan Power.]]
* NothingIsScarier: One of the scariest thing of Titans, is that humanity knows next to nothing about them. They have no idea of the Titans' biology, where they came from, why they are eating humans, or their abilities. Each time there's an idea of their limits, they prove humanity wrong. [[spoiler:As all the stuff under spoiler tags shows, they're eventually mostly figured out.]]
* OffWithHisHead: Played with. Titans can survive partial decapitation, but if the original human's spine is not severed at the nape, the Titan will just regenerate the missing parts. This further implies that Mindless Titans don't have cephalic matter, and that their basic functions still stem from the original human's body even after it's assimilated into the Titan's body.
* OurGiantsAreBigger: Despite the name they aren't [[OurTitansAreDifferent Titans in the mythological sense.]] Aside from the resemblance they bear to conventional giants, Titans have very little humanoid traits, lacking reproductive organs, a functional digestive tract, a notable intellect (those with intelligence are labelled "[[EliteMook Aberrants]]", though this applies to Titans that behave differently than slow-moving common Titans regardless of intelligence, making the classification inherently vague) and a sense of pain. In addition, they often bear peculiar deformities and are capable of high-speed regeneration.
* OutsideContextProblem: Apparently, Titans just showed up one day and started devouring humanity to the brink of extinction; even a hundred years later humans hardly know ''anything'' about them. [[spoiler:Because the First King deliberately ''removed'' the context by manipulating the memories of the Eldians he ruled. To the outside world, they've been in context for thousands of years.]]
* ParadoxPerson: The Titans break every known law of physics. They are lightweight so as to allow their massive bodies to move and yet still have enough mass to rip through solid structures, their HealingFactor is supported by a bottomless reserve of organic material and energy, and despite eating humans whenever possible, they don't get any nutrition out of it.
* PerpetualMotionMonster: Cannonball blows off half their head? [[HealingFactor No problem]]. They'll just keep going and going and going. Although they do seem to be solar-powered.
* PhlebotinumBattery: The Titans seem to be solar-powered, and only attack during the day. When kept out of direct sunlight for several hours, they become lethargic or even completely dormant. [[spoiler:That makes the nighttime attack on Castle Utgard that much more horrifying.]]
* PowerIncontinence: Invoked. [[spoiler:One of the reasons the Eldians sequestered themselves under the First King was because the Mindless Titans are too uncontrollable for any type of human being, Eldian or Marleyan regardless. This made the island of Paradis a double-edged sword because the Eldians behind the walls can't get out and the Marleyans can't safely get in while both the Eldians and the Titans remain]].
* ShapeshifterBaggage: Invoked in-universe. It's still a mystery how they can achieve their size (see SquareCubeLaw), and how can they they both attain and spend sheer amount of energy that they do in such a short time.
* SillyWalk: Many Titans run or walk in silly looking or goofy ways, with their arms flailing or positioned in awkward ways. [[BewareTheSillyOnes It only serves to make them more terrifying]].
* SlaveMooks: [[spoiler: The Founding Titan has complete control over Pure Titans, and it's implied that past Eldian rulers used them this way, prior to the First King of the Walls making his vow renouncing war. Titan shifters with Royal Blood like Zeke can use a more limited form of this ability. When not under Royal control, they have no wills of their own and can only instinctively devour humans.]]
* SquareCubeLaw: Fast, despite their size because they weigh, relatively, very little.
* ToServeMan: Titans think humans are very tasty. [[spoiler:Actually, they think that humans might be Titan Shifters and allow them to regain their human forms.]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Will try to immediately devour humans on sight, but ignore animals completely. The sole exception is horses, which they sometimes harm as a means of reaching their human riders. What makes this all the more horrifying is that they seem to do it ''solely'' for the pleasure of eating humans, as they lack digestive organs and simply vomit when their stomach cavity is full so they can ''eat more''. [[spoiler:However, it is later implied that they eat humans out of a subconscious instinct to regain their human form, which explains the complete lack of interest in animals: there's simply no ''point'' in eating them.]]
* TragicMonster: Regular Titans are this, [[spoiler:simply normal people (most of them Eldian exiles) transformed against their will into a mindless horror that devours other humans. The few that maintain any semblance of their human mind seem to be trapped in a LotusEaterMachine, and go insane. Only Titan Shifters are able to turn back, and there can only be nine at a give time (as far as we know), making it is highly unlikely that anything can be done to save the thousands who were condemned to such a fate]].
* VillainDecay: Mindless Titans are a nightmarish threat at the start of the story, with just one being able to decimate an entire brigade, and it being stated that it usually takes the sacrifice of thirty soldiers to bring down a single Titan. However, thanks to Eren's Titan powers, Hange's inventions and the increasing badassness of the Survey Corps, they're gradually reduced to {{Giant Mook}}s [[spoiler:and eventually exterminated from the island altogether.]]
* TheVoiceless: Some Titans appear to have the anatomy required to generate human speech, but don't seem capable of much more than basic groans or roars. A few rare examples are capable of HulkSpeak, though others such as the "Rogue" Titan are noted to be unable to speak due to facial structure. The Beast and Cart Titans are very notable exceptions. These can speak in both Titan [[spoiler:and human]] form, fluently in the language of the people of the Walls.
* TheUnreveal: It's unknown whether the Mindless Titans are biologically immortal, or rather, that they are mortal and their lifetimes are dilated due to their low energy expenditure, as they are largely morose and lumbering most of the time. The longest living Titans known are the Wall Titans, which have lived for more than a century. As the Mindless Titans besieging the Three Walls [[spoiler:were sent by the Marleyans after the end of the Great Titan War]], they are by default decades younger.
* WasOnceAMan: The existence of the Shifters and certain discoveries hint at a connection between humans and Titans. [[spoiler:After the destruction of Ragako, it is discovered that all Titans are transformed humans, most completely absorbed by their Titan form]].
* WeHaveReserves: Their origins are unknown, and they lack any visible means of reproduction, but there doesn't seem to be any shortage of them.
* YouWillBeAssimilated: [[spoiler:Humans who become Mindless Titans eventually degrade into the Titan body, leaving only their spinal cord and brain at the nape of the body, though the giant bodies have a mechanism that remembers the shape of the original person should they consume a Titan Shifter. The oldest Mindless Titan individual in record lasted 60 years before turning back into a human after consuming a Shifter, making it the oldest individual in record to achieve the feat; it is not known whether age has an effect in said process, as there are older confirmed Mindless Titans indeed (the Wall Titans, mentioned further down in this page, are at least a century old)]].
* ZergRush: The [[RuleOfThree final and most terrifying thing]] that makes them so difficult to fight is that they almost always attack in great numbers. During the Ragako incident, the Garrison is shown to able to dispatch one Titan with relative ease using lots of cannon fire and one of its elites, but she notes that if the Titans attack in force, their defensive line doesn't stand a chance.

[[folder:Titan Shifters in General]]

Mysterious humans that possess the "Titan's Power", granting them a HealingFactor and the ability to generate a [[InstantArmor Titan form]] while maintaining their human intelligence. Little is known about their origins, and with the exceptions of [[TheHero Eren Yeager]] and the former inheritors of the First King, all hail from some unknown civilization beyond the Wall. Their Titan forms are completely unique, and the majority possess at least one special ability.

Initially thought to be Aberrant Mindless Titans, several clues of their conscious behavior arose from the encounters with them, such as the fact that they don't consume humans when they attack, and can be either too agile and/or too strong to be normal Titans.

!!Tropes Titan Shifters share in common:
* ThirteenIsUnlucky: [[spoiler:The Curse of Ymir causes them to die 13 years after becoming Titan Shifters.]]
* AlwaysChaoticEvil: Subverted. Though they seem ObviouslyEvil at first, once their identities are revealed, they turn out to be complex and morally-conflicted individuals.
* BigBadEnsemble: With the Beast Titan. They're both larger threats than the common Titans, but aren't directly working together. The Shifters are aware of the Beast Titan, but its attack on Castle Utgard nearly kills two of its fellow warriors, who were searching for ''it''. [[spoiler:Eventually, once they are reunited, the Beast Titan is revealed to be their Warchief and a fellow Titan Shifter whom Bertolt and Reiner start working under again to finish off the Survey Corps in Shinganshina.]]
* BigBadFriend: [[spoiler:Most of the Titan Shifters seen are members of the 104th.]]
* BizarreAlienBiology:
** [[spoiler:Reiner was able to voluntarily redirect his brain functions to his Titan's brain to survive a devastating blow to his human spinal cord]]. It's unknown if the other Shifters can do this, but that certainly wasn't very human of [[spoiler:him.]] However, he was not able to retain his short memory function, which costs him the fight.
** While in human form, all Shifters can regenerate severed limbs and body parts like organs, bones and teeth in a short time that ranges between minutes and several hours. The speed on which these regenerate depends on the amount of energy they've spent, though it's also shown that they can prioritize repairs given the circumstance (like when Eren regrew his fingers to punch the Smiling Titan). However, it's not known whether a person that has lost a prolonged limb before becoming a Titan will regenerate it once they gain the Titan Power, [[spoiler:like Erwin, who is missing an arm and has a closed stump]].
** [[spoiler:Grisha Yeager had lost his fingers when the Marley officials tortured him. After acquiring the Attack Titan, he was able to regenerate them]]
* BodyHorror: Merged with the flesh of their Titan form when transformed, and while healing their bodies can be fairly horrible to look at.
* CannibalismSuperpower: [[spoiler:Regular Titans become Titan Shifters by devouring and absorbing the powers of another Shifter. This is the only way to make sure Titan powers end up with the people you want to (if the holder just dies the power ends up in a random Eldian baby)- Titanize the intended successor and have them eat the previous holder as a Mindless Titan. Ymir regained human form after 60 years as a Mindless Titan by her chance devouring of Marcel, and was in turn eaten by Porco. Eren got his power from his father Grisha, who in turn ate Eren Kruger (and later Freida Reiss) for it.]]
* CastFromHitpoints: Hange theorized, and Armin realized in Chapter 81, that using Titan abilities puts tremendous strain on Titan bodies, and for proof [[spoiler:The Colossal Titan is becoming thinner as it fights Eren and Armin's squad.]]
* ConditionalPowers:
** They are able to spend enormous amounts of energy every time they transform and fight (which partly explains why the Mindless Titans are so morose comparatively), but this puts limits on the time they can spend in Titan form. This takes such an enormous physical toll in the holders that [[spoiler:they cannot live past 13 years after receiving it regardless of whether they use it, an aspect known as "Ymir's Curse". A special case comes from the Cart Titan, which can spend months on end in Titan form, but it renders the user almost unable to walk correctly for a while after spending that time Titanized]].
** There are only so many successive times a Titan Shifter can transform into a Titan in a limited amount of time. It's shown that the Titan starts getting gradually smaller with each consecutive transformation, and at some point, the transformation might be an incomplete one, rendering itself useless. The individual himself starts getting loopier, as the fatigue starts taking a toll on his rational thought in both human and Titan states, and the end result can render him unconscious for days. [[spoiler:Later in the story, it's shown that through training, Eren found that the effects of physical and mental fatigue can be considerably diminished, allowing multiple transformations without adverse effects before his body signals its being spent. At the same time, it's shown that the Warriors do not engage in multiple consecutive transformations, being surprised at seeing Eren being able to do so]].
** As revealed in later chapters, [[spoiler:as long as there's Eldians around, Ymir's Nine Titan Powers will always have a holder because there's ethereal pathways that these take even when the holder dies; as it turns out, every single Eldian is connected to these. The most surefire way to avoid it landing in a random person is for a Titanized potential holder to devour the previous holder. This is one of the reasons the Kingdom of Marley wants to exterminate the Eldians in Paradis Island because they're not under their control]].
** There are hints in the manga suggesting that the ethereal pathways that connect all the Eldians might transcend space and time, and that the Titan Power holders might be especially susceptible to these ''even when they haven't yet attained the Titan Power''. This is shown through two instances in the story. First, Eren Yeager's dream when Mikasa found him napping while gathering wood at the very beginning of the story (showing the [[Characters/AttackOnTitanOthers Mysterious Girl]] in the manga, and his cataclysmic prophetic dream in the anime ([[spoiler:both happening not two days before he is Titanized and inherits the Power from his father]]). [[spoiler:The second instance happens when Eren Kruger mentions Mikasa and Armin to Grisha Yeager some 20 years before they are born, absentmindedly stating that the memories of them ''are not his own'']].
* EquivalentExchange: [[spoiler:This is the ugly truth behind Titan shifting; any Titan who consumes a Titan Shifter will gain their normal body back as well as the power to transform into one of the nine Titans themselves, ''but'' their human body will progressively weaken from there on out [[YourDaysAreNumbered and they will die in 13 years]].]]
* HealingFactor: Like regular Titans, but as an added bonus they can also heal quickly from normally-fatal wounds while still in human form; Bertolt could survive having his throat slit while Annie could take a bullet to the heart. The average shifter can even regrow lost limbs in a matter of hours, while an experienced shifter like Eren after the timeskip can regrow a whole leg in ''seconds''. However, there's a limit to the regeneration. Being [[OffWithHisHead decapitated]] is presumed to be fatal if the user isn't already hooked up to their Titan, as [[spoiler:Reiner stated he would've died had he not switched to using his Titan's brain after having his human head blown off]]. The regeneration can also be overtaxed and fail if pushed too far, as [[spoiler:Pieck barely manages to recover after having a gaping hole blown in her sides while Zeke straight up ''dies'' ([[BackFromTheDead temporarily]]) after taking a thunder spear point blank while already being heavily mutilated and recovering beforehand]].
* HiddenAgendaVillain: It's known they are trying to destroy the people within Walls, but no one is sure ''why''. It doesn't help that none have even ''tried'' to offer an explanation, beyond stating their actions are NecessarilyEvil.
* HumongousMecha: Their Titan form is essentially a flesh-and-blood version, "piloted" through a physical connection between their real body and the Titan body.
* ImAHumanitarian: Subverted. Their lack of interest in eating humans is actually significant, and used by Armin as one qualification for a potential Shifter (as opposed to an Aberrant). The Female Titan actively spits out victims she's killed with her teeth, while [[spoiler:Bertolt only eats a victim in order to [[RobbingTheDead steal]] his equipment]].
* ImmuneToMindControl: It is implied that Titan Shifters are immune to the mind control powers of the Founding Titan, though there has yet to be a case in which the user has actively tried.
** Though Reiner, Bertolt, and Ymir felt a jolt during Eren's first use of the Coordinate, they were not compelled to follow his order.
** The First King of the Walls' mind wiping of the Paradisians also did not include any Titan Shifters, as the Founding Titan was their only titan power. However, his enforcing his will onto his descendents may count, though it was only in effect for those with the royal bloodline.
** [[spoiler:When Eren begins the Rumbling, he states that he chose not to force the Survey Corps, including Armin, Reiner, Annie, Falco, and Pieck, to back down.]]
** This all being said, the Founder is still able to communicate telepathically and manipulate Titan Shifters on an anatomical level.
* InsistentTerminology: They refer to themselves as "warriors" as opposed to human "soldiers", but the meaning behind the distinction hadn't been elaborated on at the time it was first mentioned. For instance, [[spoiler:when Reiner thinks he's a hero fighting for humanity he's the "Soldier", but when he knows he's the villain out to kill all humans, he's the "Warrior", and after TheReveal actively identifies his two personas as such.]]
* InstantArmor: A Titan form functions as this to the Shifter, as their real body remains embedded deep within layers of Titan flesh and protected from harm. The Armored Titan and the Female Titan take it a step further, generating ''literal'' instant armor.
* InstantExpert: Invoked and subverted. Turns out, gaining a Titan Power means jack shit if ''you don't use it'', like Frieda grievously found out, or don't train to overcome its limitations, as Porco and Pieck found out. On all those cases, the Attack Titan roundly handed them their asses on a plate, having considerably more failsafes and more resorcefulness to push its limits.
* LateArrivalSpoiler: Humans being able to turn into Titans was originally a massive spoiler and the series' first turning point, but newer merchandise, official art, the anime's season 2 trailers, and other supplementary material of the series that's come out since TheReveal tend to spoil the Titan's powers to newcomers.
* LegacyCharacter: [[spoiler:The Nine Titan Powers were controlled by particular noble families of the Eldians who fought each other during the Titan War. The fight led to the appropriation of seven of the Powers by the Marleyans and six of them were given to holders with no noble descent. As such, only two of the Nine retained the ancestral memories of their noble predecessors after the war (the Coordinate Titan -now lost to a commoner- and the War-Hammer Titan). Only one other Power holder was able to access ancestral memories, Eren, but this was due to the fact that he was given the Coordinate by his father Grisha; however, he was only able to access those memories by contacting a member of the Royal Family (the original holders of the Power) and later by reading Grisha's diaries. It's implied that Eren would not have been able to access ancestral memories in the first place had Grisha not acquired the Coordinate, as Eren would have only shared Grisha's memories otherwise]].
* LovecraftianSuperpower: Shifters all possess varying powers, including a HealingFactor and organic InstantArmor.
* MorphicResonance: As a general rule, Titans will look like the humans that generated them. The Jaws Titan subverts this, looking nothing like [[spoiler:Ymir]] but in fact having some traits that clearly belonged to [[spoiler:Marcel, who she ate to gain such a Titan form]]. The one aversion is the Beast Titan, which looks absolutely nothing like its generator. The "Rogue" Titan both downplays it, because [[spoiler:its appearance is a mix of Eren's own and his father's Titan]]. Finally, as the series goes on, it's becoming clear that this works the ''opposite'' way, too. [[spoiler:Bertholdt and Reiner, seen inside their Titans, have started taking on traits of those Titans, such as a plated jaw and brow for Reiner and the flesh tendons on the face for Bertholdt.]] Why this happens isn't clear.
* {{Namedar}}: The people within the walls gave the Intelligent Titans simple names based on their unique characteristics, i.e. the "Armored Titan" due to its hardened skin. Turns out those ''were'' their actual names. The only exception is Eren's Titan, dubbed the "Rogue" or "Aberrant" Titan before it was revealed to be called the [[TitleDrop Attack Titan.]]
* NighInvulnerability: The Titan Shifters are noted to be tougher than humans, allowing them to survive injuries that would kill a normal person. [[spoiler:Ymir survives internal injuries that are described as making her insides "like a scrambled egg", while Bertholdt suffers a severed jugular and still manages to transform and fight]].
* ObfuscatingStupidity: In their early appearances before we know their identities, the Shifters when transformed intentionally act slow and stupid to pretend they're Abberants, continuing their mission while hiding that Shifters exist. Eren suddenly becoming a Shifter blows their cover; once their identities are exposed, they drop the act and TheGlovesComeOff.
* OneWingedAngel: Their Titan forms serve as this for the Shifters.
* OutsideContextProblem: Like the normal Titans before them, their appearance was completely unexpected by the humans within the Walls and no one knows where they come from. However thanks to their human intelligence and their [[SuperpowerLottery unique abilities]] Titan Shifters are even more of an unknown property then regular Titans and as such even the best that humanity has to offer are completely unprepared for them.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: ''Especially'' the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan, though the Female Titan holds the highest ''direct'' body count, at least until the Beast comes along.
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: Implied. Literally the only thing known about their culture and society is their InsistentTerminology and their exceptional fighting abilities. Even the meekest of them is terrifying when provoked.
* RemovingTheHeadOrDestroyingTheBrain: While a Titan shifter can only be killed by hitting the nape of their Titan, there's still plenty to gain from destroying its head or brain. For one thing, The Titan body still needs its own brain to operate, so shooting one's brains out will disorient the shifter's senses and make them vulnerable. Better still, decapitating the Titan's body will basically shut it down ''and'' might expose the shifter, making them easy pickings.
* SelfHarm: Their power is activated by injury, usually self-inflicted. So far, we've seen them bite themselves or cut their hands with knives, though injuries inflicted by others also seem to work.
* SharedUnusualTrait: The first three Shifters from the Homeland have a Titan with no skin. Even the Armored Titan, which appears to have skin, has it hardened into armor and where there isn't any the muscular flesh underneath is visible. This is, however, subverted with the rest of the Titans shown, as the Coordinate, the Attack, the Cart, the Beast, the War-Hammer and the Jaws Titans, all have skin.
* SoLastSeason: [[spoiler: One of the true driving forces of the conflict behind the series, especially after the Timeskip. The Titan Shifters may have dominated world warfare for the last 2000 years, but modern technology is rapidly progressing to the point where they're soon going to be obsolete. In the present day in-story, military technology is roughly equivalent to the World War I era in RealLife, so heavy artillery shells can turn even the Armored Titan into Swiss cheese in a single hit. As such, since they've been left behind due to over-reliance on the Titans, the Marleyans are racing to extract natural resources from Paradis Island (aka, where Eren and his friends live) to advance their technology while also seeking to gain control over the Founding Titan in the hopes that its ultimate power will buy them at least 50 years to catch up to the rest of the world tech-wise. This is why they sent the Warriors to the island, which ultimately kicks off the main plot]].
* SuperpowerLottery: Their special abilities put them on a level far beyond any regular Titan.
* SuperSoldier: Noticeably stronger and tougher than ordinary humans, even before factoring in their HealingFactor and ability to transform. [[spoiler:Only Mikasa ranked higher than them, and Ymir ranked so low only because she intentionally held back to give Krista the 10th rank]].
* SympatheticMurderer: [[spoiler:Once their identities are revealed, all turn out to be sympathetic regardless of the blood on their hands]].
* TaintedVeins: After emerging from their Titan, they have strange marks around their eyes likely from pulling free from their fleshy anchoring.
* TheyLookJustLikeEveryoneElse: Part of what makes the Titan Shifters so dangerous, according to the military: their population and goals are totally unknown. They can blend in perfectly with the humans, and they end up learning this the hard way.
* TragicVillain: [[spoiler:None of them are particularly happy about the things they're doing, and have suffered extreme trauma as a result]].
* TrainingFromHell: Even compared to human soldiers, their training is implied to be intense. The humans may be ChildSoldiers, but the Shifters are high-yield [[TykeBomb Tyke Bombs]]. [[spoiler:Annie]] learned all her martial arts skills before the age of ten.
* TrappedInVillainy: [[spoiler:Bertolt]] explicitly states they ''can't'' accept a LastSecondChance, and are unable to abandon their mission.
* TykeBomb: The vast majority of Titan Shifters are this, making them exceptionally dangerous compared to a regular Titan.
* UndyingLoyalty: [[spoiler:Arguably the most important trait a Titan shifter can have in the eyes of Marley. Which makes sense - a very skilled Titan who decides to backstab Marley would be a terrible SpannerInTheWorks and could easily cost them one of their superweapon for good; while even a semi-competent but loyal Titan shifter is still a fearsome weapon. Probably also one of the main reasons why Zeke ultimately got his Titan for ratting out his parents, despite not being one of the more promising candidates.]]
* TheUnreveal:
** While it's shown that some Titan Shifters retain memories of the previous Shifters they've eaten, it's not known what triggers or hinders them, to what extent these are retained or blocked, or whether they can willingly access them.
** While it has been mentioned in passing, the process on which a random person receives a Titan Power through the ethereal pathways has not been shown. No Titan Power has been transmitted through this method, as all of these have been inherited through the consumption of the original owner. Throughout the entire story, there has been only one instance of a Titan Shifter dying without being eaten ([[spoiler:Zeke Yeager being decapitated by Levi Ackerman]]), and even then, [[spoiler:the Power of the Titans was erased very shortly after, so we couldn't see the Beast Titan become transferred to another person.]]. It's also not known whether any of the Titan Powers were attained in such a way in the past.
** Similarly, it's not known what happens when an individual who holds multiple Titan Powers [[spoiler:like Eren]] perishes without being consumed by a Titan, and how the ethereal pathways would behave in such a case. So far, the holding of multiple Titan Powers by a single individual has been unprecedented for two whole millennia.
** It's not known whether [[spoiler:the rest of the nine noble families that originally held Ymir's Titan Powers had any special powers inherent to their bloodlines, as all but two, the Fritz/Reiss Family and the Tybur Family, were exterminated during the Great Titan War. It's also not known whether their bloodlines were indeed unbroken for two thousand years. For that matter, the subject of "royal blood" is not explained, as despite ''anyone'' with Eldian blood having the potential to become a titan, and every Subject of Ymir is descended from Ymir and her three daughters, there exists a specific line of people who have the exclusive ability to access the full power of the Founding Titan and the Coordinate.]]
** [[spoiler:To begin with, it's not known how the laws of inheritance of the Titan Powers were found in the first place, as there have been no examples of them save for the exposition given about the laws themselves. To make things even worse, it's implied that ''said laws might not be universal'']].
** [[spoiler: The process in which the nine titans were split from Ymir was not shown. While it's implied that her power was divided when her corpse was cannibalized by her daughters (and the daughters in turn had their bodies cannibalized), it is not known exactly how the powers split into exactly nine since there were only three daughters at the time and they were "encouraged" to give birth to hundreds of offspring. Given that due to Eren, two of the titan powers are now combined with the Founder again, it begs the question if they could be split again from the same process, if they can be split at all.]]
** [[spoiler: It's unknown if acquiring or transferring a Titan power requires the killing of the prior host. Titan shifter powers are acquired by ingesting the spinal fluid of a shifter. Throughout the series, this has required the current holder of the power to be EatenAlive; however, it's unknown if and how extracting spinal fluid non-lethally (such as via a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumbar_puncture lumbar puncture]]) and having a titan consume it would affect the process. On the one hand, the the fact that the number of Titan shifters has been limited to 9 suggests this isn't the case; on the other, the fact that Rod Reiss had a vial of titan serum that Eren was able to consume in order to gain the power of hardening suggests that it might indeed be possible.]]
* UnseenEvil: The Shifters we've seen are powerful enough to wipe out humanity, but they're nothing more than mooks working for an unseen faction. [[spoiler:The faction is later revealed to be the country of Marley.]]
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: They've caused the deaths of more than a quarter of a million people, and have brought humanity to the brink of extinction, but they're really just [[spoiler:psychologically scarred teenagers]]. When pushed [[DespairEventHorizon too far]], they become equal parts sympathetic and ''utterly terrifying''.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Based on the reactions of the Shifters we've seen, they are terrified of failing whoever commands them. [[spoiler:Ymir]] explicitly states they can't return empty-handed, offering to be a "souvenir" in hopes of gaining mercy for them.
* YourDaysAreNumbered:
** [[spoiler:Titan Shifters have a limited lifespan after gaining their powers, an estimate of thirteen years. BloodFromTheMouth is enough proof of their bodies breaking down from the strain. To make matters worse, if the powers aren't passed on directly through the creation of another Titan Shifter, the power will just go off to someone else randomly.]]
** [[spoiler:With the dissolution of the Titan Powers, the Titan Shifters lose their abilities and are free of the Curse of Ymir, as evidence by Reiner being no worse for wear after the three-year TimeSkip in the epilogue.]]

![[Characters/AttackOnTitanMarley Marley]]-controlled [[Characters/AttackOnTitanEldia Eldian]] Titan Shifters / "Warriors"

Individuals of Eldian descent handpicked from their ghettos in Marley who are coerced by the Marley government to infiltrate the Three Walls and take control of Paradis Island in order to exterminate the extant Eldians, exploit the island for natural resources and obtain the "Coordinate" from the Eldian Royal Family; this, without eliciting the awakening of the millions of Titans embedded within the three walls.

In the original myth, the Eldian Ymir Fritz gained the Titan powers from the Devil and imparted them unto nine Titans to subdue the Marleyans, an ancient empire in the continent. Seven of these Titan powers are supposedly under Marleyan control now, and are used by the government for the infiltration by giving them to a select few candidates. Out of these seven, only six are known (including the Jaws Titan, who was unwittingly granted to an individual who is not controlled by the Marleyans), while another one was revealed later in the story.

->''"That day, humanity remembered... the terror of being ruled by them. The humiliation of being kept in a cage."''
-->-- '''Narrator'''

The first Titan seen in the series, as well as the second largest seen thus far, with an estimated height of 60 meters (200 feet). It puts into motion the events of the story by breaking through the gate to Shiganshina District, allowing an invasion of Titans into human territory for the first time in a century.

-->'''Note:''' ''This entry deals exclusively with the Colossal Titan form of Bertolt Hoover. For [[spoiler:Armin's]] Colossal Titan form, see the "Colossal Titan" entry in the "Eldian Titan shifters" section below.''
----
* TwoDVisualsThreeDEffects: In the second season of the show, its animation was replaced by a [=CG=] model.
* AchillesHeel: [[spoiler:Armin and Hange correctly hypothesize that the Colossal Titan is ill-suited for protracted battles due to the fact that its primary defense mechanism involves evaporating parts of its own body to produce steam. Producing large amounts of steam substantially weakens its body and Armin is able to devise a plan to exploit this fact during the Battle of Shiganshina.]]
* ArchEnemy: Eren saw it as this for breaking through Shinganshina and thus causing the destruction of his home and the death of his mother. [[spoiler:Subverted later on when his (and the Armored Titan's) true identities are revealed, and Eren puts more of his hatred toward Reiner (Armored Titan) than Bertolt (Colossal Titan)]].
* ArtisticLicenseBiology: Aside from the general idea of Titans being ludicrous to the extreme, the Colossal Titan actually [[AvertedTrope averts]] some key anatomical problems regarding the SquareCubeLaw. Due to its immense size, its head and arms are quite spindly to cut down on extra mass while its torso and legs are astonishingly massive proportionally to the rest of its body in order to provide the necessary support for its frame. Its feet are also more akin to an elephant's, with its toes curled inward and the feet being much more circular and padded than regular human feet to provide a proper foundation for it to stand on. Akin to the nature of other Titans, the Colossal Titan has a low material density overall for the components of its flesh and bones, but it's uniquely massive at it, making most, if not all other Titans pale in comparison.
* AwesomeButImpractical: The Colossal titan is ''very'' strong, with its strength and steam being able to cause wide spread devestation rather effectively and is capable of feats no other titan can come close to. However, its has many drawbacks, as a lack of durability, a lack of fighting capability due to its large size and slow movements, and its large size also means that [[spoiler: Bertolt has to limit himself not to crush his partner Reiner any time he transforms, meaning that he can't completely summon his titan when needed like other titan shifters.]]
* BellyFlopCrushing: [[spoiler:Used to great effect during the battle between Eren and the Armored Titan.]]
* BigBad: It's the [[SeriesMascot iconic]] Titan that quite literally kicks off the plot by breaching Shiganshina District. [[spoiler:But this ends up being a SubvertedTrope. He's actually just a lackey for the Kingdom of Marley, and Ymir even refers to him as a "small fry" while claiming killing him won't accomplish a thing]].
* BizarreAlienBiology: [[spoiler:He's somehow able to access the contents of his stomach while transformed, allowing him to steal and equip the gear of a soldier by swallowing him whole. Likewise, he's able to swallow Ymir whole and later emerge from his Titan form carrying her in his arms.]]
* BlowYouAway: Sort of. Similar to how the Armored Titan's body needs an alternate way to vent body heat, the Colossal Titan can emit steam from its body at will (and probably why it's also skinless). While it used this to SmokeOut on more than one occasion, it can also make an effective defensive measure, blowing away and burning any potential attackers.
* BodyHorror: A 60-meter tall skinless horror, with a disproportionate body.
* TheBrute: He is the biggest of the Titans.
* TheBusCameBack: [[spoiler:Played with. When Ymir Fritz summons the past Titan Shifters to stop the heroes from reaching Eren, one of them is ''definitely'' Bertolt's Colossal Titan form, but whether it actually ''is'' Bertolt inside it or just a puppet controlled by Ymir is left unclear, though coicidentially Armin has a vision of Bertolt at around the same time.]]
* CoDragons: With the Armored Titan, as the two work together to carry out the destruction of the Walls [[spoiler:for the Beast Titan and the Kingdom of Marley]].
* ColorCodedEyes: [[spoiler:Has green eyes. The same dark, muted shade he has in his human form.]]
* DavidVersusGoliath: [[spoiler:His demise is a result of Eren and Armin taking him out, the former in his human form, all through sacrifice and trickery.]]
* DeathByIrony: [[spoiler:One of the biggest, baddest, and most intimidating Titans ever seen is eaten alive in its human form by a Titan that would be normally be cannon fodder to it- and it goes out screaming and begging for its life like any other human would do to boot.]]
* DiscOneFinalBoss: Presents the greatest threat in the series, until its true identity is revealed. Then, it's pretty clear it's merely a lackey and whatever is coming next probably won't be good for humanity.
* TheDreaded: The largest Titan ever seen, and the only one capable of breaking the Outer Walls. The possibility that it can reappear at any time and break down the rest of the Walls is a constant source of dread for humanity.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: It’s StealthHiBye tendencies early in the story under [[spoiler:Bertolt]] are a bit unusual considering it’s later used almost exclusively for it’s FantasticNuke properties [[spoiler:by Marley’s military and it’s following recipient, Armin. Bertolt’s reluctance to transform in the Retaking of Wall Maria]] implies it can’t be controlled either, making it unclear how he transformed so cleanly before.
* EvilDuo: With the Armored Titan.
* EvilIsBigger: It's sixty metres tall, and it's certainly towers over Eren's "Rogue" Titan form.
* FantasticNuke: Its transformation in Chapter 78 actually creates a mushroom cloud like what occurred in Hiroshima at the end of World War 2.
* FourIsDeath: [[spoiler:Bertolt transforms into the Colossal Titan four times during his time on Paradis Island, with the fourth time resulting in the Colossal Titan's defeat along with Bertolt's demise]].
* GiantMook: While all Titans tower over humans, the Colossal Titan towers over those Titans.
* GlassCannon: While it is perhaps the strongest and most destructive Titan, [[spoiler:it still goes down in one hit once the Survey Corp catches it in a trap and Eren cuts Bertolt out of it]].
* TheHeavy: Literally kicks off the plot by kicking in the gate to Shiganshina District, shattering the illusion of peace that lasted a century.
* HeelFaceTurn: A variant. [[spoiler:Its power now belongs to Armin and the Survey Corps.]]
* HitAndRunTactics: Its modus operandi in a nutshell, which is ''terrifying'' considering its massive size. It appears seemingly out of nowhere, does massive damage to the Wall, and vanishes just as quickly. [[spoiler:This becomes a key piece of evidence that he's a Titan Shifter infiltrating the military, using their equipment and training to aid in his escape]].
* ItCanThink: During the battle in Trost, Eren notices that it deliberately targets the wall-mounted cannons and is able to identify the gate as the weakest point in the Wall, and concludes that it must be intelligent.
* {{Kaiju}}: It's a 60 meters (roughly 200 feet) tall skinless steaming monstrosity, with enough strength to destroy the Walls.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:Has actually eaten people, and ''aided'' other Titans in doing so (most infamously by kicking a hole through the wall). He's ultimately EatenAlive himself by Armin (who he himself was responsible for nearly killing) in the process of turning Armin into a Titan Shifter.]]
* LateArrivalSpoiler:[[spoiler:At the time it was introduced, it was considered overall the biggest Titan shown in the story. However, during the Revolt Arc, Rod Reiss' Mindless Titan form almost outsizes it triple-fold.]]
* {{Leitmotif}}: ''XL-TT'', with plenty of [[OminousLatinChanting Ominous Chanting]].
* LogicalWeakness: As noted by Armin, [[spoiler:the Colossal Titan expends significantly more energy over a shorter period of time due to its size, causing noticeable deterioration of its body. It expends even more energy and deteriorates even faster when using its steam attack, which is later exploited by Armin to weaken its flesh to the point where Eren could slice into it and rip Bertolt right out]].
* MascotVillain: The most recognizable of all the Titans, and the one who appears most in marketing.
* MightyGlacier: Immensely powerful, but slow. Despite being very dangerous to humanity as a whole, it soon becomes evident he's not nearly as deadly in direct combat as other Titans. It's simply too slow, when human soldiers are used to dealing with [[LightningBruiser smaller, faster]] Titans. This means that it's mostly unable to catch anyone that climbs on it, making it mostly useless against the 3D Maneuver. Makes sense, as the Colossal Titan is essentially a siege unit, not a warrior. That's why it needs the Armored Titan to breach the inner gates, which are not as easy to reach. [[spoiler:It also mirrors Bertolt's personality quite well, as well as his relationship with Reiner.]]
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Only noticeable if you're looking for it, but that's way more teeth than anything close to human should have.
* MorphicResonance: [[spoiler:Careful observation reveals it shares Bertolt's bone structure, including his big nose and deep-set green eyes. In human form, Bertolt is unusually tall with long limbs, a trait taken to the extreme in his Titan form. The similarity is enhanced by the fact that the Colossal Titan was designed before Bertolt.]]
** [[spoiler:Now that its power has been transferred over to Armin, the Colossal Titan's appearance has changed, (though only seen from far away, it has much thinner legs.)]]
* MyBloodRunsHot: It has the ability to super-heat its body, which allows it to produce scalding blasts of steam as a defensive mechanism.
* NoBodyLeftBehind: An extreme example, even by Titan standards. It vanishes quite literally in seconds, leaving nothing behind.
* NoSell: While the "Rogue" Titan is able to fight evenly with the Armored Titan, the Colossal Titan is four times as big, making the "Rogue" Titan's attacks pitifully ineffective.
* PerpetualFrowner: Judging from the shape of the lips and tendons around its mouth, it's actually ''frowning''.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: At least, as much as a Titan can be considered a person.
* RedBaron: Is called [[DestroyerDeity "The God of Destruction"]] by [[spoiler:a Marleyan soldier]].
* RedIsViolent: Its red muscles are exposed by its lack of skin. It kicked down the gate to Shiganshina District and thus doomed countless humans.
* SquareCubeLaw: Notably obeys this more closely than the other Titans: it's [[MightyGlacier immensely slow]] [[LightningBruiser compared to most Titans,]] and has much smaller arms and head compared to his massive legs and body, as if his massive bulk needs more support.
* SecretIdentity: Suspected of having one, which leaves Erwin uncertain of who can be trusted within the military. [[spoiler:It turns out to be the meek and soft-spoken Bertolt Hoover.]]
* SeriesMascot: Featured prominently in official materials and merchandise, as well as launching quite a few memes.
* SingleStrokeBattle: Guess what happens when the [[spoiler:"Rogue" Titan tries to tackle it in a desperate attempt to take it down? Yep, he's promptly kicked across the city and embedded in Wall Maria. Down for the count]]. Later on, [[spoiler:the Colossal Titan itself goes down in a similar sudden manner after Eren successfully managed to sneak up behind it and rip Bertolt right out of its nape]].
%%* SlasherSmile: Only at first glance: check PerpetualFrowner above.
* SmokeOut: Disconcertingly, for something so huge. It constantly emits clouds of steam, and vanishes into one after attacking Trost.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: It's called the Coloss''us'' Titan in the manga.
* StarterVillain: It's the first legitimate threat in the series causing all the problems in the story. [[spoiler:As the series progresses though, it's really just a lackey compared to far greater enemies the heroes eventually come across]].
* StealthHiBye: Despite being 60 meters tall, it is able to appear and disappear without warning. This leads Hange to theorize about its true nature. The [[spoiler:immediate generation of the Titan body is a power all Shifters possess, but only Bertholdt can disintegrate his entire Titan in seconds. This is an important aid to secrecy, as if it took as long as other Titans to burn its massive body away, it would give humans time to gain information on it.]]
* StealthyColossus: Despite being 60 meters tall, it's surprisingly adept at StealthHiBye and SmokeOut.
* SwallowedWhole: It does this to two victims, and for good reason. [[spoiler:One he needs intact gear from, the other he wanted alive]].
* TearsOfRemorse: As strange as that sounds, Armin dreams about the Colossal Titan openly weeping [[spoiler:after taking its power by devouring Bertolt]], most likely due to the horrible actions it was forced to carry out [[spoiler:while in Bertolt's possession]].
* TombstoneTeeth: The Colossus Titan — who literally kicks off the series' plot — has dozens of identical rectangular teeth, though, while enormous, they're comparatively small to the rest of its body — amping up the creepiness already dialed up to eleven by its lack of skin.
* TookALevelInBadass: Come Chapter 79, roles have been reversed as now ''he's'' pulling more weight than his cohort, the Armored Titan. Yes.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: More than the other Shifters. Not only is it capable of creating or destroying its Titan body in the blink of an eye, it's also capable of slowing the disintegration to create a protective cloud of superheated steam. It even appears to have control over the contents of its stomach; after swallowing someone wearing ODM gear, it comes out wearing it.

->''"What... is that thing?!"''
-->-- '''Garrison Soldiers'''

A Titan with advanced strength and agility, this Titan is muscularly well-built and has a hunched profile. While the Colossal Titan created the initial breach in Shiganshina District, this Titan purposefully broke down the gate leading from Shiganshina into Wall Maria's interior.

----
* AchillesHeel: Hange figures out that there are gaps in the armor around its knees, much like a real suit of armor would need to allow free movement.
** The Achilles Heel that all Titans possess, the napes of their necks, is guarded by armor at all times. However, [[spoiler:this ends up ''doubly'' averted, when it's broken through and Reiner's head is destroyed along with his nape. He is still alive, and has at this point now twice performed a NoSell to otherwise lethal attacks.]]
* AdaptationDyeJob: Cover art by Isayama typically shows his armor colored some shade of white. The anime gives it a very strong ivory color, which makes sense given it is presumably made from bone or a similar colagen-heavy material. This seems to be unique to Reiner, as none of the other Titans with exposed bone have this ivory tint.
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:Eren tears one of his arms off during their first battle, and Mikasa severs the tendons in his knees in order to cripple him temporarily]].
* ArtEvolution: Its appearance has changed significantly since the beginning of the manga, going from a lean build much like the "Rogue" Titan to its better known, Linebacker-like HeroicBuild. The [[WatsonianVersusDoylist Watsonian]] explanation seems to be that [[spoiler:Reiner was a skinny youth at the time, who later developed a HeroicBuild and MorphicResonance reflected that]], while the [[WatsonianVersusDoylist Doylist]] take is this is a result of Isayama's increasing skill as an artist, as design sketches and the anime both use the heavier build. [[spoiler:The latter explanation ended up being correct after a flashback chapter depicting the original attack on Wall Maria from Reiner's perspective showed the Armor Titan with its heavier build]].
* ArtisticLicenseBiology: Most of it's armor plates are based off of it's muscle and tendons which, if they were actually rigid, would cause the titan to be incapable of movement. Most likely, like everything about titans, there is an unknown property that lets them be hard when they need to but still flex a bit for the sake of movement, but this is never touched upon.
* BizarreAlienBiology: It's a humanoid covered in natural armor plates that appear to be made of thick layers of Titan bone. And the reason the Armored Titan's eyes are constantly glowing? [[spoiler:Even ''its eyes'' are armored. They even aren't destroyed when the Survey Corps' gas-propelled spears are shot right into them--they're shown fractured like glass, one to such an extent that the pupil and iris are visible directly underneath.]]
* BoxingLessonsForSuperman: [[spoiler:His military training only makes Reiner ''more'' dangerous in his Titan form, allowing him to take full advantage of his strength and durability to devastate his opponents]].
* ClippedWingAngel: [[spoiler:During the battle of Liberio, Reiner is too injured to properly form his Titan. The resulting Titan is virtually identical to his human form, with a few shards of broken armor across the body. It seems to be as sturdy as a normal Titan, going down from a single punch by the Attack Titan]].
* CoDragons: With the Colossal Titan, as they work together to destroy the Walls. The failure of the Armored Titan to appear at Trost was pivotal in saving not only the town, but Wall Rose itself.
* CurbStompBattle: [[spoiler:Surprisingly ends up on the ''receiving'' end against the Beast Titan.]]
* DiscOneFinalBoss: [[spoiler:He ends up being this more directly than his partner, bringing most of the cast to the very brink of death before being routed by Eren's EleventhHourSuperpower. Ymir refers to him as a "small fry", and predicts that what is coming next will be ''much'' worse for humanity]].
* TheDreaded: Carries an utterly fearsome reputation, as the other Titan capable of breaching the Walls. It's considered to be completely [[TheJuggernaut unstoppable]], and humanity fears it nearly as much as the Colossal Titan.
* EyeScream: [[spoiler:The Survey Corps newly designed "Thunder Spears" successfully manage to penetrate his armor-coated eyes and explode, completely blinding him.]]
* FasterThanTheyLook: It's fairly lumbering... [[ShedArmorGainSpeed until it starts discarding pieces of armor]]. Then it turns into a flat out LightningBruiser, although at the risk of being more vulnerable to attacks.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Glowing, [[SupernaturalGoldEyes golden]] eyes.
* HairColorSpoiler: [[spoiler:Shares Reiner's short-cropped blond hair, though some art makes it look lighter]].
* HeavilyArmoredMook: When asked, Eren notes it didn't look that different from a normal Titan. [[spoiler:He'd be wrong, since it's actually [[TheAce Reiner]] and therefore considerably more dangerous than a normal Titan]].
* IAmNotLeftHanded: It becomes significantly more dangerous once it seems to realize that the "Rogue" Titan is not fooling around, implying that it was holding back initially.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: [[spoiler:After Eren is rescued, he panics and begins ''throwing'' the Titans attacking him to block the soldiers' escape route]].
* ItCanThink: More subtle than other examples, but still noticeable in the anime-only introduction scene. It assumes a running stance prior to charging the gate, and lowers its head when fired on by cannons.
* TheJuggernaut: A terrifying, nigh-unstoppable force introduced shrugging off cannon fire and charging straight ''through'' Wall Maria's gate. Later on, it appears that basically nothing can directly stop the sheer momentum of its charge.
* KryptoniteFactor: As it turns out, in a straight up fight it's weak against [[spoiler:''joint locks'' because of the mechanical forces involved]].
* LightningBruiser: When it [[ShedArmorGainSpeed sheds its joint armor]], it becomes this with a major boost to speed and mobility. The soldiers observing its battle with Eren are shocked when it suddenly begins moving quickly.
* LogicalWeakness: Much like real suits of plate armor, it has weaker armor (but still protected) at its joints to allow to move at all. At one point it's forced to [[ShedArmorGainSpeed sacrifice its joint armor to improve its mobility]], which the protagonists exploit.
* MightyGlacier: Its armor provides incredible strength and durability, but at a cost of speed and mobility. It is much slower than other Titans, and requires a good running start to build up any momentum.
* MonsterKnight: [[spoiler:Turns out to be one due to its SecretIdentity]].
* MorphicResonance: [[spoiler:Shares Reiner's hair and build]].
* MusclesAreMeaningful: On top of the protective plating, The Armored Titan is noticeably buffer than Eren's Titan and it shows in their fight; while Eren's punches have virtually [[NoSell no effect]] on him, each of the Armored Titan's punches send the Attack Titan ''flying in the air'' and easily break his jaw. Eren has to resort to using techniques he learned from Annie (that is, techniques designed for [[WeakButSkilled weaker people to subdue stronger foes]]) to bring him down.
* NighInvulnerability: The thing would be terrifying enough without being almost impossible to damage in any way. Swords shatter uselessly and even cannon fire bounces off its skin without causing damage. [[spoiler:He is so tough that he is able to stand the Colossal Titan falling on him and still walk. Later, its armor isn't even hurt when the Colossal Titan erupts into being directly on top of it, despite the explosion being so monstrous it's easily visible for miles.]]
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: His design is partially based on Wrestling/BrockLesnar.
* NoSell: Excels in using this trope. In the closest use to trope origin, because of its armor, even the absurdly strong "Rogue" Titan just gets its limbs broken when punching it, while the Armored Titan itself is completely unaffected. He can choose to do this with his joints, sealing off the gaps in his armor that could be exploited. And later, in the more typical usage, when [[spoiler:Reiner's exposed nape is hit with an explosive attack that should almost certainly be a guaranteed kill, he and his Titan start to move, and the latter ''roars''.]]
* NotSoInvincibleAfterAll: [[spoiler:He is practically ''shattered'' in Chapter 92 with one shot from a Union battleship. This highlights that technology has progressed to the point that Titan power no longer assures dominance over the world.]]
** [[spoiler:The Armored Titan doesn't have much advantage against Eren Yeager's War-Hammer Titan which can swiftly create spikes to easily penetrate the armored plates.]]
** [[spoiler:After destroying the Walls, Eren effortlessly shatters all the armored plates of the Titan with minimal willpower. Reiner has no choice but to flee.]]
* {{Overheating}}: Implied, as it exhales steam during strenuous activity.
* PerpetualExpression: Because of the armor covering its face, it's incapable of moving most of it. It ''does'' have lips it can move underneath, noticeable in the anime's second episode. Double points, because its eyes are ''always'' glowing a bright gold, meaning it's impossible to tell what the Armored Titan feels or even who it's looking at.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: At least, as much as a Titan can be considered a person.
* RammingAlwaysWorks: How it destroys the inner gate of Shiganshina.
* SculptedPhysique: Its armor plates give it an almost robotic appearance.
* SecretIdentity: Suspected of having one, which leaves Erwin uncertain who can be trusted within the military. [[spoiler:It turns out to be Reiner Braun.]]
* ShedArmorGainSpeed: It's capable of shedding the armor at its joints, granting increased mobility and speed. This is a risky gamble, however, as it creates an AchillesHeel that can be exploited by a skilled soldier. [[spoiler:Mikasa does exactly that, slicing the backs of his knees and leaving him temporarily crippled]].
* SignatureMove: The humble, if hard hitting shoulder tackle becomes a thing of terror when used by a giant with armored plates.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: [[GlowingEyesOfDoom That glow]], for extra good measure.
* SuperStrength: The only Titan other than the Colossal Titan capable of destroying the Walls, due to its armored body and massive strength. To put it into perspective, it's stronger than the "Rogue" Titan, whose monstrous strength is one of the traits that make it fearsome.
* SuperToughness: Ultimately, its defining trait is its monstrous ability to shrug off attacks.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:He shields the Beast Titan from the fire barrage from the Union naval fleet, and gets ripped apart in the process]].
* TestosteronePoisoning: In the official guidebook, each Titan has a gag rating. The Armored Titan has a perfect 10 for "Machismo".
* WallCrawl: In the Battle of Shiganshina, it climbs Wall Maria alarmingly fast.
* TheWorfEffect: The Armored Titan was introduced as TheJuggernaut, shrugging off cannon shots as it plowed through the gate in Shiganshina. Every subsequent fight, however, has resulted in its defeat. It was beaten 1-on-1 by the "Rogue" Titan, taken down by the Survey Corps and their Thunder Spears in the battle to reclaim Shiganshina, and Chapter 92 has the it [[spoiler:ripped apart by Union forces in a wave of anti-Titan cannonfire.]]

->''"That's no Aberrant. It's intelligent!"''
-->-- '''Armin'''

A Titan which attacks the expedition sent to Wall Maria. The only Titan thus far to have a female body shape (though, like all Titans, it lacks any actual reproductive organs).
----
* AttackItsWeakPoint: In a shocking reversal of human tactics versus Titans, it knows about Maneuver Gear weaknesses and how grabbing the wires renders the user completely helpless. This is part of what makes Armin deduce how intelligent it is.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Presumably the reason it didn't kill Armin when she slaughtered her way through the Survey Corps. This proves to be a catastrophic mistake; Armin eventually uncovers Annie's identity as the Female Titan, which in turn, starts the domino effect that leads to Bertolt and Reiner being exposed.
* BodyHorror: Its body is only partially covered in skin, with large swaths of exposed muscle or even ''bone'' in the case of its hands. The effect is pretty horrifying. During the battle with Survey Corps, it's also subjected to [[EyeScream various]] [[{{Fingore}} types]] of [[HumanPincushion mutilation]]. Furthermore, she has to tear the skin around her jaw to open her mouth up all the way.
* BrokenTears: As the Survey Corps leaves the forest, Levi looks back to see her crying.
* ContrivedCoincidence: InUniverse. The main evidence that [[spoiler:Mikasa]] presents about her true identity is the fact that [[spoiler:she looks like Annie]]. However, [[SubvertedTrope it's not really all that contrived]] when compared to other Titan Shifters.
* CreepyBlueEyes: Pale, and way too intense.
* CurbStompBattle: Slaughters its way through the ''entire right flank'' of the Survey Corps formation. Levi, Eren, and Mikasa are the only ones who survive direct combat, and even then [[spoiler:Annie was deliberately trying to capture Eren alive and not at all focused on fighting Mikasa]]. It's not so lucky the second time, however.
* CurbStompCushion: The Survey Corps [[DoNotGoGentle does not let her go unscathed]] in her rampage. The elite squad, Eren, then Levi show that even if they can't slay it then at least she's not invincible to their attacks.
* DarkActionGirl: Distinctly female, and the most deadly Titan ever encountered. While the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan present a threat to the Walls, the Female Titan is not only an intensely physical fighter but seems to ''enjoy'' killing for the sake of killing.
* DeadlyDodging: Played a role in its defeat of [[spoiler:the "Rogue" Titan, turning his reckless attacks against him]].
* DecoyGetaway: After being captured, she used a horde of Titans to destroy her Titan body [[spoiler:while Annie herself was able to make a getaway in all the confusion]].
* DefensiveFeintTrap: Implied to have used this purposefully when it drops its arm covering its weak point as bait for Mikasa then attacking when said person takes the bait. She survives, though only because of Levi's lightning fast perception and movement.
* DiscOneFinalBoss: The final boss of the first season, though clearly not the true BigBad.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: Named for its thus far unique appearance.
* EyeScream: In an effort to slow it down, its eyes are stabbed out on multiple occasions.
** Petra and Eld slashed her eyes out at one point.
** Levi stabbed both of his blades into her eyes, [[CombatPragmatist but disconnected the blades and left them in her eye sockets so that they wouldn't heal properly.]]
** During the HumanPincushion incident, in the manga, we get a painfully close close-up on her eye, which has a hook stuck in it. Keep in mind that these hooks are the size of guitar necks.
** In the anime, Eren gives her a bad one during their second fight. He pins her down and squeezes her face so hard that her eyes pop out just before he crushes her face like a stress ball. This is especially notable because of how during the other times, she just took it without a sound, and when this happened, she was seen clutching her face and screeching in very obvious pain.
* FanDisservice: A naked woman with a nice physique. In the manga her body fat is so unnaturally low that you can see her muscle striations through the skin, in the anime some her muscle is completely exposed.
** Parodied in the official guidebook, which gives it a ranking of 10 in "Sexy".
* FemmeFatalons: It's shown to be able to grow them.
* FightingFingerprint: Eren recognizes that it uses [[spoiler:Annie's]] unique fighting style.
* FightsLikeANormal: And that's what makes it so dangerous.
* {{Fingore}}: Reiner slices several of its fingers off. Later, when it attempts its WallCrawl, Mikasa slices them off.
* GiantFootOfStomping: Used in the least comical way possible, and to great effect.
* GemstoneAssault: She can crystallize her skin in order to protect her weak spot or enhance the power of her punches. With a crystallized fist, she can break the [[LightningBruiser "Rogue" Titan's]] jaw off with one punch.
* GlasgowGrin: When opening its mouth so wide to capture Eren, [[NightmareFace it tears its face apart]]. Strangely, despite its cheek muscles then ripped apart, it can still open and close its jaws. However, when Levi slices open those same mouth muscles, she is unable to prevent her jaw from opening, nor close it to prevent him taking Eren.
* HairColorSpoiler: The anime's emphasis on her blonde hair and CreepyBlueEyes makes it a hell of a lot easier to make an estimated guess on her true identity.
* HeroKiller: Murders Levi's entire elite squad as well as several squad captains and many more regular soldiers.
* HumanizingTears: In the aftermath of her battle with Levi and Mikasa, Levi takes one final look in her direction and sees her sitting against a tree, weeping. However, her actual feelings in that moment remain a mystery and it isn't clear whether her tears are because of [[TearsOfRemorse remorse]], frustration, or something else. Nevertheless, it provides a hint that she's more than a ruthless monster and serves to humanize her. She's one of very few Titans that are capable of showing the full range of human facial expressions. This serves to further humanize her.
* HumanPincushion: Hange's trap fires wooden poles into all her joints, completely paralyzing her in the process.
* ImplacableWoman: She relentlessly pursues Eren during the 57th Expedition, leaving a path of carnage and destruction in her wake. Even the best countermeasures thought up by Hange and Erwin barely slow her down, as she tears her way through people, giant trees, and traps alike to pursue her target. Her enhanced speed, regeneration, and ability to harden her skin would be frightening enough without the sheer determination she shows in going after Eren. It's only when she's hunted down, cornered, and suffering a VillainousBSOD that she abandons her pursuit of Eren and attempts to flee.
* ImpostorForgotOneDetail: The Female Titan makes a point of not harming any of the members of the [[spoiler:Southern 104th Trainee Corps that Annie cared about, narrowing down its identity after more glaring aspects came to light]].
* InstantArmor: Partially. It can selectively harden parts of its skin, forming crystal strong enough to shatter the military's blades.
* ItCanThink: Its high body count testifies how deadly an intelligent Titan can be. It was smart enough to cover the back of its neck when fighting ''and'' knows how 3DMG works so it just grabs the grappling-hook wires.
* JackOfAllStats:
** The Female Titan is not the strongest, fastest, or toughest of the Titans. Instead, she is a highly-versatile fighter that can quickly adapt to different conditions.
** The Female Titan also shares the Hardening and Coordinate abilities that the Armored and Founding Titan respectively have. The Female Titan's versions of both abilities are weaker however.
* LastLousyPoint: She can outmatch the Attack Titan in fighting prowess, but she cannot overpower it on raw strength and persistence.
* LightningBruiser: Incredibly fast and agile, able to ''outrun'' the Survey Corps' [[CoolHorse horses]], she's the third fastest Titan right behind the Jaws Titan and Cart Titan. She's also tough, thanks to an unique ability to [[InstantArmor crystalize]] her skin.
* LogicalWeakness: Unlike the Armored Titan, it lacks constant armor and needs to [[InstantArmor crystallize]] areas of its body to protect itself from attacks. It has success in stopping most of the Survey Corps' blade attacks, but it's still vulnerable to people that either move [[SpeedBlitz too quickly to predict]] (Levi) or ambushes from ranged weapons like Hange's explosive-propelled barbed weapons.
* MakeMeWannaShout: She has the ability to attract Mindless Titans from a short range with her shouts, she uses it to help her escape when she is immobilized by the Survey Corps and on a flashback to summon a mob of Titans to attack Shiganshina on the day it fell.
* MaleGaze: [[AmbiguouslyBi Reiner]] refers to it as having a "nice ass". Considering said ass is only partially covered in skin, he was probably being sarcastic. But it should be noted that the camera does linger on the creature's butt multiple times.
** In one official chibi-parody comic, [[CovertPervert Armin]] is shown to have repeatedly checked her out when she first encountered him. [[spoiler:[[SecretIdentity Annie]]]] is not amused.
* MegaManning: According to Annie, while any Intelligent Titan could assimilate another's power if they consume part of them, the Female Titan is able to do so more easily, if not the easiest of all titans. This is implied to be the reason why the titan possess the Armored Titan's ability to harden, the War-Hammer Titan's ability to crystalize oneself in human form, and her limited ability to attract titans.
* MoreDeadlyThanTheMale: She has the highest kill count among the Titan trio and the second highest among Titans in general (behind only the Beast Titan) -- she kills around 30 soldiers on-screen in the anime and is implied to have killed many more.
** Subverted later in the story, when [[spoiler:the Colossal Titan and the Beast Titan kill around 96% of the Survey Corps, mowing through about 45 troops each]].
** It's also subverted even later when [[spoiler:the Attack Titan strikes Willy Tybur's rally at Liberio, killing hundreds of attendees and bystanders]].
* MorphicResonance: The anime amps up how much she ''really'' resembles [[spoiler:Annie, right down to the large nose]].
* MsFanservice: It doesn't look that different from a human, so for those who can get past how she has no skin she looks attractive.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: She is visibly shocked when she accidentally kills a bunch of civilians in a church in Episode 25 of the anime. Her horrified expression is more visible in the manga however.
** There's another (anime-only) example in the same episode. Blink and you'll miss it, but she makes a noticeably pained/guilty expression after she bashes the "Rogue" Titan's head in. [[spoiler:Annie clearly cares for Eren]].
* NightmareFace: After its [[spoiler:fight with Eren's Titan form]], the Female Titan violently splits open its mouth to swallow [[spoiler:Eren]], thus capturing him. This is the face in the [[https://darkstarzero.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/screenshot-9_9_2013-1_57_53-pm.png anime version]]. It is ''much'' creepier in the [[https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3qWlnnJ_CdQ/Ua1w7nIQkOI/AAAAAAAAEE4/GUbCKBBzMoc/s1600/sshingeki_no_kyojin_ch29_36_37_eng.jpg manga]].
* OffWithHisHead: Happens to her during her second fight with the "Rogue" Titan.
* OhCrap: During her rematch with the "Rogue" Titan, she ends up fleeing in terror. The mortified expression of desperation on her face makes clear before she even starts trying.
* {{Sadist}}: It may be one, given how many {{Cruel and Unusual Death}}s it dishes out. In the manga, she was seen grinning right before she spun one particularly unfortunate soldier around incredibly fast by his 3D Gear wires.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: During her second battle with Titan!Eren, she eventually gives up on kidnapping him and desperately tries to escape instead.
* SecretIdentity: The Female Titan's true identity is [[spoiler:Annie Leonhart]].
* SignatureMove: A Muay Thai high-kick to the head from the side, shown from start-to-finish in detail, and compounded with a [[InstantArmor hardened shin and foot]] for good measure. [[spoiler:This is one of the major clues that she's Annie]]. When she does this to the "Rogue" Titan, she takes his head clean off the first time and comes close to doing it again the second time.
* SlasherSmile: The anime highlights this when it's finally found Eren.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: It's the first Titan that is shown to have distinctly female attributes and whose holder is a woman; later in the story, the Progenitor Titan has distinct female features ''if'' the holder is female; also, the Cart Titan's holder turns out to be female, though its appearance suggests otherwise, same as the Jaws Titan, both which are deformed enough not to show any apparent female features. It's not quite known whether the holder of the Female Titan ''has'' to be a woman, though, and what's the reason and functionality of it being "female" whereas other Titans (Shifters and Mindless) are ostensibly genderless.
* TheSlowWalk: Presented in Episode 24 of the anime. She's utterly unconcerned about the elite fighting force headed her way.
* SympatheticMurderer: Once it's revealed to be [[spoiler:Annie]].
* TrampledUnderfoot: Does this to several unfortunate soldiers and civilians. It's actually an important plot point -- she's one of the first Titans shown not to eat her prey, hinting that she's different from the others.
* UncertainDoom: [[spoiler:Its status since the 4-year time-skip was unknown until Chapter 136, where Annie transforms to assist the Survey Corps in saving Armin from Ymir's titans.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: During her second fight with Eren, she goes from expressionless, to fearful, to desperate, to downright '''terrified''' as she tries to escape Wall Sina. The last one comes when she realizes that she's falling with no way to climb back up, and with a very pissed off Eren in Titan form waiting for her below.
* WalkingSpoiler: The first Titan Shifter known after Eren and proving not only are there Shifters hostile to humans within the Walls, but also that they are intelligently infiltrating the population. Proving the Titan problem is far from the [[ZombieApocalypse simple one it might appear to be.]]
* WallCrawl: Tries to climb Wall Sina in her attempt to escape human capture. Mikasa chops through her fingers before she can reach the top.
* WeakButSkilled: Compared to the other 14-15 meter class Titans, this Titan isn't quite that strong by itself; the official guidebook gives the Female Titan's strength stat as only a 6/10. However, due to Annie's mastery of the hardening technique as well as her own immense skill in close-quarters-combat, she easily proves to be the most dangerous of the Warriors when it comes to direct combat.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Late in the forest battle it's noted to be tired, as indicated by a major drop in speed. Possibly affecting its battle with the resident [[TheAce aces of the Survey Corps]].

A strange, ape-like Titan first seen within Wall Rose. It quickly leads multiple attacks upon the Survey Corps, showing incredible intelligence and the ability to speak the human tongue fluently. It transformed the people of Ragako into Titans, and locating it was part of the Titan Shifters' mission within human territory. Stated to be "testing" mankind's strength, it vanished beyond Wall Maria after stealing military equipment to study.
----
* AnimalisticAbomination: Unlike the other Titans who simply resemble large, disproportionate humans, the Beast Titan is more like a sasquatch or other ape. And that's not even beginning to describe what makes it such an abomination compared to the other Titans. With its uncanny aiming, intelligence, ability to command other Titans at will, and most horrifically of all [[spoiler:the ability to turn people into Titans]]. The other Titans are more akin to just overgrown monsters that can't even think: the Beast Titan is an odd, confusing, horrific creature that's just ''wrong'', even when compared to other Titans. [[spoiler:Turns out he's a fellow Titan Shifter.]]
* {{Animorphism}}: The Beast Titan is a Titan Shifter transformed into a beast-like titan. It's noticeable as the other titan powers at least resemble humans, while the Beast Titan has a similar physique to an ape. It's implied that the Beast Titan does not ''have'' to resemble an ape. [[spoiler:In Chapter 135, Eren summons the Nine Titans of the Past, including the previous holders of the Beast Titan, some of whom resemble animals from the EasternZodiac. It's implied that, since Zeke's predecessor was a ram, and Falco's Titan resembled a bird, that there is a fixed order in which animal a Beast Titan may become. Finally, the ability to resemble animals is not a power exclusive to the Beast Titan, as Falco manages to give his Jaws Titan wings through a similar method of how Annie and Eren were able to harden like the Armored Titan.]]
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: This seems to be the way it sees Titan Shifter culture. Lower ranked Titans must be completely obedient to their superiors, without reservation. In the event that an order is not acceptable, the lower ranked Titan can challenge its superior to single combat. If it wins, it's the new boss. If it loses, it can find itself being fed to another "warrior" who will be more "appreciative" of its unique gifts. [[spoiler:It's strong enough to defeat the Armored Titan without any apparent injury]].
* BadBoss: When a Titan fails to obey it, the Beast Titan casually crushes its skull as punishment. [[spoiler:This seems to only apply to Mindless Titans. He's encouraging to Bertolt and Reiner when they reveal their fears that Annie is being tortured. He did, however, warn Reiner that if Reiner challenges him again and fails to beat him, he'll be fed to another Titan Shifter.]]
** Most notably, it has no problem throwing boulders with the force of cannon fire ''through'' its own army.
* BigBad: The Beast Titan is the most dangerous and frightening enemy faced by the heroes during the pre-TimeSkip half of the story. It transforms the citizens of Ragako Village into Titans under its command to wreak havoc across Wall Rose. [[spoiler:It's later revealed to be Zeke Yeager, the "Warchief" of the other Titan Shifters and Eren's half-brother, taking command of the mission and forcing the Armored and Colossal Titans to submit to him. While he's taking orders from the nation of [[TechnologicallyAdvancedFoe Marley]], the Beast Titan is more directly involved in the story, while Marley [[GreaterScopeVillain controls things from the background]].]]
* BigfootSasquatchAndYeti: More so than any ape he looks like a classic if enormous Bigfoot. The calm way it walks about rather recalls the infamous [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOxuRIfFs0w Patterson Film]].
* BoringButPractical: The Beast Titan's main strength is unique in that it mainly uses rocks and boulders to strike from afar. Effectively, it's a mortar unit with more adaptability, which is simplistic compared to every other titan shifter but still gets the job done.
* CreepilyLongArms: Almost long enough to touch its ankles, and in the anime they make them look even thinner and bonier.
* DidntSeeThatComing: Two counts: One, it had limited experience seeing what humans with 3DMG were capable of, and two, it was sufficiently distracted by Erwin for much of the Battle for Shiganshina. [[spoiler:Both of them lead to him underestimating Levi, who promptly carves the Beast Titan up as soon as he gets an opening.]]
* DissonantSerenity: This thing is calm, unhurried, and (sorta) polite while surrounded by Titans. Somehow makes it even more disturbing.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: It was ''surprised'' when it accidentally crushed a boulder to dust in its hand.
* DragonInChief: [[spoiler:Despite being the Warchief of his fellow Warriors the Beast Titan is revealed to be another agent of the [[GreaterScopeVillain Kingdom of Marley]]. However he is still the greatest weapon in the Marleyans' arsenal and the one they trust the most to capture the Coordinate.]]
* EvilSoundsDeep: The anime gives him a very deep, yet smooth-sounding baritone voice. The dissonance between his (pseudo-)politeness and his voice further adds to how creepy he is.
* FastballSpecial: During the battle for Shiganshina the Beast Titan tossed Bertolt, who was secured in a barrel, into the city, intending on having Bertolt transform and nuke the area.
* FatBastard: The anime emphasizes its potbelly, which noticeably shakes with each step it takes when shown from a side angle.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Politely asks Mike about his equipment and removes it without harming him. It then proceeds to tell the other Titans that they may have their way with him, since it's finished with its business. When Mike begins screaming in horror and agony, it even jokes that apparently he ''can'' speak after all.
* GeneralRipper: Is dead set on capturing "the Coordinate" and killing or converting every last man, woman, and child within the Walls, regardless of the cost. It will even send subordinates into certain death situations if it thinks that will advance this goal, even slightly.
* GeniusBruiser: Its intelligence is 11/10 in the databook, making it the smartest character of the manga. Emphasis on the "bruiser" part as well, [[spoiler:considering it managed to beat ''[[MadeOfIron Reiner in Titan form]]'' without looking too beat up.]]
* GoYeHeroesGoAndDie: Invoked. He expresses annoyance at the fact that [[spoiler:the Reiss family has set up a system where they use young men and women as little more than cannon fodder against the Titans in a misguided cry for heroism. This is, while he's mowing down Erwin's last horseback charge with the Survey Corps against him]].
* HeroKiller: It knocks Mike, the Survey Corps' 2nd strongest soldier, off a roof and proceeds to politely ask him questions. When it's done with him, it feeds him to its minion Titans. It later begins the second wave of the siege on Castle Utgard by killing Rene and Henning by throwing chunks of the Wall at them, and then summons ''more'' Titans to finish off the survivors. During the Return to Shiganshina arc, it devastated Erwin's last-ditch charge, putting Erwin on death's door (who ultimately died of those injuries) and slaying Marlo and dozens of other soldiers.
* HulkSpeak: Averted, it's one of the few Titans (Shifter or otherwise) that can speak as coherently as a human being (to Mike's horror).
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Throws things with impeccable aim. Includes almost nailing Mike with a thrown horse, and destroying a tower of Castle Utgard with a chunk of Wall Rose from a mile away.
* ItCanThink: Not only is it the most intelligent character in the series, it can speak the human language fluently. [[spoiler:Less surprising after it's revealed that he is human. He is still one of the first Shifters seen who can speak fluently in Titan form.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: He approached a completely helpless Mike, ripped off his 3-D gear, and because Mike was too awe-struck by the fact that the Beast could talk in his own language to respond, ordered the army of Titans to kill him, as an afterthought.
* KarmaHoudini: In Chapter 81. [[spoiler:After Levi manages to slice him out of his Titan form and planned to feed him to ''any'' survivor of the scouting legion, the Cart Titan comes along and snatches him up in its mouth.]]
* KnightTemplar: Is truly convinced that Shifter society is the epitome of righteousness, and the people within the Walls are irredeemably evil. Nothing, not even pointing out its own actions is going to change its mind about this.[[spoiler:..except all that's a lie; he's actually on Paradis' side.]]
* LargeAndInCharge: It's at least 17 meters tall, larger than even the biggest Titans (bar the [[GiantMook Colossal one]]) and it is able to command other Titans, as well as lead them in organized attacks against the human forces.
* LivingMacGuffin: Implied to be one. Ymir suggests that Reiner and Bertholdt may know what it is or have something to do with it. [[spoiler:Turns out she was right--he's their ''boss''.]]
* LongRangeFighter: This seems to be its primary offensive capacity, as its long muscular arms allow it to throw projectiles at enormous range and velocity (be they horses, rocks, or artillery shells). Its victory against Reiner, however, proves that it's not weak at close-quarters combat, at least as far as other Titans are concerned.
* ManiacMonkeys: Its body proportions make it resemble a KillerGorilla.
* MorphicResonance: Zig-zagged. The Beast Titan shares some of Zeke's facial features and has a similar look in his eyes, but he also has an ape-like nose and completely different hair color.
** It's hard to see unless he's shirtless, but Zeke seems to have a high [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ape_index Ape index]] ([[NotMakingThisUpDisclaimer yes, that's what it's called]]), meaning his arms are longer than average even in human form.
* TheMole: [[spoiler:In chapter 105, he is revealed to have been an ally of Paradis all along. Not many have seen it coming.]]
* MonsterProgenitor: [[spoiler:It possesses the power to transform humans into Titans. This is because of a unique ability of its Shifter, Zeke, who has royal blood, which allows him to transform Eldians who have been administered his spinal fluid and then [[MakeMeWannaShout made them hear his shout]]; These Titans are in turn able to move under the moonlight and obey his commands]].
* MoralMyopia: To truly incomprehensible levels. After everything it's done, and the orders it has given, and the consequences it promises for failing to obey said orders, it has the gall to call the humans within the Walls an "evil race." What's worse, it bemoans the fact that the Reiss bloodline has wiped the memories of the people within the Walls, and knows they've done nothing wrong.
* OutsideContextProblem: One enormous, furry enigma wrapped in a question mark. It would almost seem comical if it weren't so damn ''scary''.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: [[spoiler:As he blurts out, he and his fellow Titans operate against the Eldians under the assumption that the Reiss family is still in power; as of the latter part of the manga, he's not exactly wrong, as Historia Reiss has been crowned Queen, yet she lacks the subjugating powers of her family and she is little more than a figurehead]].
* SatanicArchetype: In-universe historical depictions of the Beast Titan also show it as [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/untitled_79.png a gigantic equine creature]] in the likes of the biblical [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behemoth Behemoth]], a titanic creature of primordial chaos (generally depicted as bovine) whose existence proves the futility of opposing God, as God alone can capture it. As the biblical beast, the Beast Titan also represents an overwhelming sense of dread and helplessness.
* SimpleYetAwesome: One of its favorite means of dispatching enemies is to throw rocks, which, in the hands of a Titan, is a deadly prospect. It can throw large rocks with such high speed and accuracy that they're very difficult to avoid and all but lethal to humans.
* SlasherSmile: Breaks into a pretty creepy one at the end of Chapter 74.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Has a similar body shape to Grisha's Attack Titan.
* TomTheDarkLord:
** This horrifying entity's real name is [[spoiler:Zeke]]. Not just [[spoiler:Zeke, but Zeke Yeager. Zeke could be short for Ezekiel, which means God strengthens (people also interpret Zeke to this phrase as well). Considering his KnightTemplar personality, this could lead to a meaningful name for him.]]
** [[spoiler:The former Beast Titan was a man named Tom Xaver]].
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler:The former Beast Titan under Tom Xaver was a weak titan good for only research. Under Zeke Yeager it is Marley's most powerful weapon due to its rock throwing and its ability to convert people into Titans with Zeke's royal blood]].
* WalkingSpoiler: It heralds many horrifying possibilities about the nature of Titans, triggers a chain of terrible [[TheReveal reveals]], and leaves a village missing and many high-ranked officers dead in its wake.
* WallCrawl: Scales Wall Rose before his attack on Castle Utgard.
* WeHaveReserves: Not only does he throw boulders throug his own attacking Titan army[[spoiler:, he orders the few that he has left to attack Levi so he can run away.]]
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness:
** As soon as Mike is no longer interesting, it feeds him to other Titans. As an ''afterthought''.
** [[spoiler:It threatens Reiner with this if he challenges him again and loses.]]

!!Cart Titan / Cartman Titan / The Cart
[[quoteright:288:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cart_titan.jpg]]

A quadruped Titan in the service of the Marleyan army, first seen at the battle for Shinganshina. It assisted the other Warriors in attacking the Survey Corps, serving as their scout and beast of burden[[note]]It was initially referred to as the "Mule" Titan before its name was revealed[[/note]]. It is currently held by Pieck Finger.

----
* ArtEvolution: When the Cart Titan first appears it is [[https://imgur.com/3PMMPVe shown having a flat face, small lips, and wrinkly skin]]. By Chapter 81, however, the Cart Titan is shown with its [[https://imgur.com/zmBaLNx long snout and large mouth]] that seems to have became its default form. WordOfGod has stated that the Cart Titan [[http://livedoor.blogimg.jp/isayamahazime/imgs/a/0/a056d85e.jpg was originally supposed to be a middle-aged man]] before deciding to make the Cart Titan female, so this may have influenced the design of the Titan. The anime uses the updated, more feminine design when it finally appears, as well.
* BoringButPractical: While the other 8 titans are known for some kind of immense power or ability, the primary attribute of the Cart Titan is it's immense endurance and utility (hence the name).
* FragileSpeedster: The Cart Titan is stated to be the second fastest of the Nine Titans, but physically weaker than the others. Without its equipment or a surprise attack, the Cart barely stands a chance in an actual battle. In fact, [[spoiler:its regeneration is notably weaker than the others. When Pieck is critically wounded in battle, her HealingFactor is barely able to manage]].
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: It looks like a rather pathetic creature, compared to the other Titans. Its primary traits are its deformed body, a long snout and quadruped form. But it turns out to be an exceptionally versatile Titan, swift-moving and capable of wearing or carrying a large variety of equipment as needed. Among the Titans, it also has the ability to maintain its transformation for ''weeks'' at a time as opposed to hours. This makes it perfectly suited to supporting the others on missions, or carrying out special assignments as needed. [[spoiler:The mounted machine-guns are an ideal weapon against the Survey Corps, tearing the air-borne humans to pieces while Pieck's armor makes taking her out extremely difficult]].
* ItCanThink: One of the first things Erwin does upon seeing it is figure out it's a Shifter, not a Mindless Titan. It was also introduced speaking with Zeke.
* LethalJokeCharacter: Initially, it looks as comical and strange as any other Titan. Its long snout and bizarre proportions make it seem funny as opposed to dangerous, especially since it mostly lingers on the sidelines. But when utilized to its full potential, it suddenly becomes a ''deadly'' opponent because of its speed, agility, and versatility. It serves as a perfect support unit to other Titans, especially when provided with the specialized equipment Marley has built for it. Later on, it's also revealed that the Cart has phenomenal endurance by virtue of being able to stay active for prolonged periods of time, [[spoiler:and Pieck is able to get out of a Cart's body and quickly create another on the fly multiple times]].
* LogicalWeakness: [[spoiler:The Cart is a Titan designed to carry things on its back, limiting its ability to respond to attacks from above. Several soldiers exploit this weakness, getting airborne over the Cart where the gunners can't fire and then raining Thunder Spears down on it]].
* NonActionGuy: Subverted. It ''seems'' like a non-combatant for most of the battle at Wall Maria, sitting back and letting others fight. But once it leaves its support role, it is fast and deadly, especially when [[spoiler:wearing its custom-made equipment, such as a machine-gun nest or body armor]].
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Despite its ridiculous appearance and Pieck's generally 'relaxed-to-the-point-of-goofiness' attitude, it's not an enemy to be taken lightly [[spoiler:when equipped with its mounted guns and cannons. Eren learns this the hard way when he neglects to take out Pieck in favor of focusing on Reiner and Porco, getting his Titan's brains blown out by Pieck's guns and very nearly dying as a result]].
* PerpetualMotionMonster: The Cart's specialty is extreme stamina, allowing it to continue operating for ''months'' at a time. Pieck was able to maintain her Titan form for two months during the final months of the war, and later demonstrates the ability to [[spoiler: repeatedly transform without any apparent limits. While even ''Eren'' could only transform a total of three times in a row before running out of stamina, Pieck is able to repeatedly create a fresh Titan and abandon it just as quickly. She [[BadassBoast boasts]] that as long as she's alive, she can continue to fight without tiring. In short, the only way to stop the Cart Titan is to land a fatal blow on the Holder]].
* RunningOnAllFours: Its main distinguishing trait is that its limbs are proportioned to allow this.
* SamusIsAGirl: Its current holder is Pieck, a young woman.
* VillainousRescue: The Cart Titan manages to save the lives of [[spoiler:both Zeke and Reiner during the course of the Battle to reclaim Wall Maria]]. Of course, it also attempted to bite Levi and Hange in half in the process.
* WeaponizedAnimal: While not exactly an ''animal'', it ends up being utilized as such. [[spoiler:At the battle of Fort Slava, a platform with dual machine gun turrets and an armored mask are strapped on. This allows soldiers to ride it into battle and rain death down on enemies, while it uses its armored mask as a battering ram to destroy structures]]. The whole image recalls the likes of WarElephants, with soldiers riding an enormous and intelligent mount into battle.
* YourHeadASplode: [[spoiler:Jean fires a Thunder Spear right at its head, destroying the armored mask and blowing a large chunk out of the Titan's skull. Unlike other examples of a Titan losing its head, the scene features EyeScream and brains splattering everywhere in a horrifying fashion]].

A Titan under the control of the Marleyan army, originally sent to take part in the Paradis Operation. However, the holder at the time was killed and the power passed on to Ymir. Several years later, it was returned to Marley and inherited by Porco Galliard.

It took part in the battle at Fort Slava, providing protection to the Warrior Candidates and helping to destroy the armored train's rail system.

-->'''Note:''' ''This entry deals exclusively with the Titan form of Marcel and Porco Galliard. For Falco's version, see the Jaws Titan III entry down the page. For Ymir's version, see the Jaws Titan I entry further down in this page.''
----
* AbsurdCuttingPower: The claws and fangs of the Jaws Titan are stronger than any other Titan, capable of tearing through steel with ease. [[spoiler:More importantly, they seem to be the only thing capable of damaging the War Hammer's defensive crystal]].
* AgonyOfTheFeet: During the Battle of Liberio [[spoiler:its feet are cut by Mikasa, allowing Eren to further disable him and use its jaws to crush Lady Tybur's crystallized cocoon]].
* CallBack: The Jaws Titan is the actual name of the Titan Shifter power that Ymir from the 104th used to hold. Prior to this reveal, Ymir's Titan was given the FanNickname "Dancing" Titan.
* TheCavalry: Once the threat of the armored train has been removed, it charges in to aid the infantry in taking Fort Slava.
* FragileSpeedster: According to Reiner, it's the fastest Titan power, only matched by the Cart Titan.
* JaggedMouth: Galliard's version of it has an armored, serrated mouth with no lips or cheeks and behind it a row of jagged sharp teeth.
* LegacyCharacter: The most frequently passed over Titan in the recent years (had Marcel lived, his "tenure" wouldn't be over yet in the story). Marcel, Ymir, and Galliard have all possessed the Titan over the course of the story [[spoiler:and later it's inherited by Falco]]. Notably, the first and third holders are brothers.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: The Jaws Titan's primary characteristic seems to be powerful fang-lined jaws. With Galliard and Marcel, the Jaws Titan lacks lips and cheeks.
* MorphicResonance: Aside from the mouth and hair, both Galliard and Marcel's Titans bear (or [[PosthumousCharacter bore]], in Marcel's case) a resemblance to their human faces.
* NowThatsUsingYourTeeth: The Titan's primary ability is its sharp teeth and powerful bite. It's capable of crushing a cannon or ripping up railroad tracks with ease, [[spoiler:and even crush crystallized Titan skin]].
* RunningOnAllFours: While there is slight variance between holders, each version has a distinctly ape-like appearance and runs on all fours.
* SecondarySexualCharacteristics: When held by a man, it sports a lion-like mane with facial hair in spite of one the holders being clean-shaven and the other being a preteen kid.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Marcel and Porco's titan forms share the same stark-white, skull-like face and blonde mane.
* TheyKilledKennyAgain: A total of four different people inherit the Jaws Titan in the span of seven years. In contrast, we only get to know one Armored Titan, Female Titan, Cart Titan, and Warhammer Titan. The only Titan with a higher number of inheritors if the Founding Titan, which is held by five people over twenty-nine years.
* WildHair: It has long, wild hair in spite of belonging to holders with short, close-cropped hair.

[[folder:War-Hammer Titan*]]
!! War-Hammer Titan
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/warhammer_titan.jpg]]

The last of the Nine Titans to be revealed, the War Hammer Titan is currently in the possession of the Tybur Family in the Kingdom of Marley.

Its exact traits and abilities are initially unknown, as it was not been used in battle for nearly a century. The Titan has the unique ability to use its hardening to created complicated structures and a variety of weapons, concussive and projectile, out of hardened titan flesh. Unique among Titans, the Shifter is capable of using it without being inside, making the actual Titan invincible as long as the Shifter has endurance. It is the only Titan under the control of Marley that is not used for the "Warrior" Program.
----

* AchillesInHisTent: Ever since the Tybur Family rebelled during the Great Titan War and sided with Marley, they have kept the War-Hammer off the battlefield. This, however, doesn't mean that the holder has sat on its hands since then (unlike the Reiss family).
* AwesomeButImpractical: Fearsome as it's hardening ability is, it's noted that overusing the power will rapidly deplete the user's stamina and force them to emerge from Titan form much faster than other Shifters.
* BadassBoast: [[spoiler:It taunts Eren before attempting to crush him under its hammer, only for Mikasa to show up and blow its nape to smithereens.]]
* BrutishCharacterBrutishWeapon: Ancient artwork depicts the Titan as a man carrying a hammer. And indeed when it does finally show up it actually wields a Titan sized two-handed warhammer [[spoiler:strong enough to ''utterly destroy'' hardened Titan skin]].
* CardboardPrison: Eren points out that the War Hammer ability can allow him to break out of jail anytime he wants. [[spoiler:He does so when Zackly is killed by a bomb, providing a perfect distraction.]]
* ClimaxBoss / DiscOneFinalBoss: For the series post-Time Skip. There's a reason why Eren mainly targets her in the Raid on Liberio, as it looks to be Marley's biggest ace being an extremely powerful titan wielded by the nation's highest authority figure. [[spoiler:Instead, Eren eats her after a grueling battle, and the rest of the series has Eren himself slowly slipping into the role of BigBad and FinalBoss]].
* {{Foil}}: To the Coordinate and its holders, the Eldian Royal Family. They keep the ancestral memories of their families and holders unlike the rest of the Titan Shifters, though, they're different in the fact that the holder of the War-Hammer clearly had training in fighting and in the use of the Titan, unlike the Reiss Family, who had renounced war and conflict and were inexperienced in the use of its powers.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: It's not immune to having its own constructs being turned against it, as proven when Reiner manages to get his hands on one of the spikes created by Eren and stab it right through Eren's Titan.
* LastOfItsKind: It's the last Titan power held by its original noble family of Eldians.
* LogicalWeakness: [[spoiler:Since the main body controls the Titan from a crystal cocoon using a string (see RemoteBody), [[CutTheJuice the titan can be "deactivated" by cutting said string]]. Also it limits the Titan's movement, since if it moves too far, it leaves its own Shifter unprotected. This weakness is circumvented by Eren fusing the War Hammer with his Attack Titan form, allowing him to just carry the ability around with him]].
* MorphicResonance: Subverted, for the most part. [[spoiler:While it has a feminine face due to its female user, its body takes the form of a lean, bald humanoid without feminine features]].
* RemoteBody: [[spoiler:Unlike other Titan Shifters, it can't be killed by attacking the nape since the main body controls the Titan from a crystal cocoon that is connected to the Titan body by a string. It is not known if this is a specific skill of the Warhammer Titan, or a skill employed by its shifter]].
* SamusIsAGirl: [[spoiler:While it was initially posed that Willy Tybur was its holder, it was actually his sister, that holds it]].
* SpontaneousWeaponCreation : This Titan's power is the ability to spontaneously create objects, generating a wide variety of weapons out of its own hardened body. This makes it an extremely dangerous and versatile opponent.
* TheStarscream: Supposedly joined forces with Helos to defeat King of Eldia and force the exodus to Paradis. [[spoiler:Subverted in that this turns out to be a ruse by King Fritz, however. The Tybur Family was working for him the whole time, and he only let himself be defeated to make the family look like [[FakeUltimateHero heroes]].]]
* SwissArmySuperpower: There seems to be very few limitations on what the War Hammer can create, forming objects as simple as a spear and as complex as a crossbow capable of firing bolts. It also demonstrates the ability to create objects hard enough to shatter another Titan's armor ''or'' flexible enough to act as a whip.
* TransformationIsAFreeAction: Subverted. [[spoiler:After she reveals herself right in front of Eren, he sucker punches her mid-transformation and tries to finish her off right there. Unfortunately for Eren she reveals that she was more than capable of fighting back even while her head was being pulped since her holder wasn't in her nape to begin with]].
* UnskilledButStrong: [[spoiler:Not in Lady Tybur's hands, who was StrongAndSkilled, but Eren. While Lady Tybur was crafting not only spikes, but hammers, flogs, crossbows, etc. with her powers, Eren's first use of the Warhammer's power in combat is to just wildly shoot a bunch of spikes at Reiner and Porco. The crazy thing is though, the Warhammer's power is just so damn ''strong'' that he very nearly kills both of them with spikes alone before being [[BigDamnHeroes stopped by Pieck]]]].
* WhiteMaskOfDoom: It appears to have a second layer of pure white skin covering its body. The holes in this skin around its eyes and face make it appear as if it's wearing the helm of a medieval knight or an executioner's mask.
* TheWorfEffect: Zigzagged. It quickly establishes itself as a powerful and versatile opponent, but is quickly dispatched by Mikasa. This proves to be a short-lived victory, and even after Eren discovers its weakness, he's still left struggling against the War Hammer's power.

A Titan inherited by its current holder, Falco Grice, after being turned into a Pure Titan by Zeke's Beast Titan and consuming Porco Galliard. Mainly due to consuming Zeke's spinal fluid that led to his transformation, this Jaw Titan has animal characteristics in tune with avians.

It took part in the battle against the Yeagerists at the harbor, and later the FinalBattle against Eren at Fort Salta. As of the series' conclusion, it is, by default, the last of the Nine Titans to be inherited.

* {{Animorphism}}: Because Falco's spinal fluid was from Zeke, the holder of the current Beast Titan, his Jaw Titan ends up taking the form of a giant bird unlike anything seen in the ''Attack on Titan'' franchise. It goes to show the ability to resemble animals is not a power exclusive to the Beast Titan, as Falco manages to give his Jaws Titan wings through a similar method of how Annie and Eren were able to harden like the Armored Titan.
* BigDamnHeroes: This Titan gets two major moments to shine that prove instrumental in the series final arc.
** At the Port the alliance is being hammered at all sides by the Yeagerists with no way to escape when suddenly Falco activates his Jaw Titan power for the first time. While he soon loses control over it, he is able to break up the Yeagerists formation, allowing the alliance to take the port for themselves and escape.
** During the FinalBattle the members of the alliance are being pinned down by an army of former nine Titan users with seeming now way to win. The flying Jaw Titan's arrival allows the alliance to regroup and turn the tides on the battle. It's very likely that, without the Titan's intervention, the alliance would have been slaughtered and Eren would have destroyed the world.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: During a meeting with the Marleyean military higher-ups way back at the start of the series' TimeSkip, General Calvi makes a casual quip on questioning whether or not they have Titans with wings. Falco's Jaw Titan not only has animal characteristics of a bird, but it can also ''fly''.
* RuleOfSymbolism: Each of his forms represents a different stage in the life cycle of a bird. His initial mindless titan form resembles a deformed chick, while his first appearance as the Jaw Titan resembles that of a fledgling that has yet to leave the nest. His final winged form is that of a full grown bird, symbolically showing Falco's growth as a Titan shifter.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: This Titan only appears close to the end of the series, but it plays a contributing role to the alliance saving the world—first by helping them take out enough Yeagerists to escape, and later adding flight support/transport during the FinalBattle against Eren.
* WalkingSpoiler: Falco inheriting the Jaw from Porco is already shocking enough (as he was behind Gabi in competing for Reiner's Armor). Then, there's the fact that it's a giant bird that can actually ''fly.''
* WingedHumanoid: As shown in Chapter 135, this Jaw Titan is capable of growing wings and flying.

The Titan form of Eren Yeager, initially labeled as a bizarre Aberrant that ignores humans in favor of Titans. When he is nearly killed during the battle of Trost, he transforms for the first time and goes on a Titan-killing rampage. It is a 15-meter Titan, with a distinctly masculine build, long black hair, and a skull-like face. It possesses SuperStrength, but does not appear to possess any other special abilities until he acquires the "Harden" ability from Rod Reiss.

In later chapters, it's revealed that the Attack Titan Power is one of the Nine Titan Powers of Ymir Fritz. It is the only Titan power aside from the Founding Titan that has never fallen into the hands of the Marley. It should also be noted that, due to Grisha's actions, the Attack Titan power is currently mixed with the Founding Titan.

%%After the raid of Liberio, the Warhammer Titan is also currently mixed with the Attack and Founding Titans. Additionally, we now know its main ability: the Attack Titan grants its users the power to see the memories of ''all'' inheritors, both past and future.
----
* AnimalEyes: His eyes possess fully-functional nictitating membranes, the third eyelid common in birds, reptiles, and sharks. It's something of a FreezeFrameBonus, as he can be observed blinking them during several battles.
* ArchEnemy:
** As a relentless seeker and deliverer of freedom, the holder of the Attack Titan has been the stone in the shoe for [[spoiler:both the King of the Walls and the Tybur family, who colluded together to sequester the Eldians at Paradis. As such, the first Titan power that became unaccounted for after the exodus of the Eldians to Paradis was precisely the Attack Titan. Willy Tybur even declares Eren Yeager, the Attack Titan, as public enemy no. 1]].
** It's later stated that the Attack Titan's power is meant to [[spoiler:indeed oppose the absolute power of the holder of the Coordinate]].
* AnArmAndALeg: Happens multiple times, frequently due to it punching hard enough to destroy its hands. GoodThingYouCanHeal, "Rogue" Titan. Other times it happens when he goes up against the more experienced Titan Shifters. The Female Titan removes one of his arms and legs in their second fight, and in the second fight with the Armored Titan, it came close to ripping Eren's ''entire'' leg off from the waist down before the fight was interrupted.
* BellyFlopCrushing: [[spoiler:After emerging from the cellar during the play, Eren decides that the best way to get rid of all the Marleyan higher-ups in the stands is to ''jump up and crush them all with a massive belly-flop''. Naturally, the damage is catastrophic]].
* TheBerserker: It doesn't lumber around, it charges in roaring and ready to smash. Of special note is its rematch with the Female Titan in the anime, [[spoiler:which ends with it almost eating Annie in the anime.]] In the manga, though, it's a lot calmer and more controlled during said rematch. According to [[spoiler:Eren Kruger]], the Attack Titan's relentless drive to fight and persevere is there by design, and it's its entire purpose.
* BigDamnHeroes: Saves Mikasa from being eaten by a Titan in its first appearance before proceeding to murder every Titan in its direct vicinity. He ends up being the deciding factor in turning the battle of Trost around.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: When Eren loses control during the Trost Reclamation mission in the anime, his eyes are shown as having pupil-less glowing green irises and black sclera.
* BoxingLessonsForSuperman: The better a fighter Eren becomes, the more dangerous the "Rogue" Titan becomes.
* TheBrute: ImpliedTrope. It seems that it was specifically created from [[spoiler:Ymir Fritz]] to beat the crap out of other Titans, and to be absolutely relentless at it. [[spoiler:It's later revealed that these traits might have been initiated by Eren Yeager himself, as the Attack Titan's actual power is to inherit the memories of past and future holders, and he used it to influence the previous holders to relentlessly strive for freedom.]]
* CharacterTitle: The "Attack" Titan is an approximate English translation of its Japanese name, which is literally the "Shingeki no Kyojin" which would be more accurately translated as the Vanguard Titan or the Charging Titan.
* CreepyShadowedUndereyes: In addition to the muscles, one feature all three known carriers of this Titan shared is the dark, deeply sunken eye sockets.
* {{Determinator}}: When it was being eaten by other Titans, it just looked for more prey and killed all the Titans around it ''without having its arms''. Later on, even after losing AnArmAndALeg and having its brains smashed in, it just regenerates extremely rapidly and ''still'' keeps going. As it turns out, [[spoiler:being a {{Determinator}} is actually its inherent nature according to Kruger, as all Attack Titans through history have relentlessly striven for freedom. Which ''itself'' is later flipped on its head as well when it ''really'' turns out that it was Eren Yeager's own powerful will influencing all of his predecessors to act in such a manner]].
* DatedHistory: In-universe: Marley's history books state that the Eldian royal family in Paradis Island still has two Titan powers in their possession, by implication the Attack Titan believed to be one of them; however Eren Kruger, who was a previous holder of that Titan power, mentioned that his family were loyalists who chose to stay in the mainland and attempted to resist Marley, it is reasonable to say that both factions are not quite right over who has control over all the Titan powers.
* DeathGlare: No matter who controls the Titan, its eyes always seem to be fixed in an intense, furious gaze.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: Perhaps as a consequence of his rage, HealingFactor, and inexperience, his punches tend to do as much damage to his own arms as they do to the poor schmuck on the receiving end.
* TheDreaded: The Attack Titan is this to ''the rest of the world'' post timeskip, especially after its rampage in Liberio. Its image is so synonymous with the supposed devils of Paradis that a soldier witnessing [[spoiler:Eren's kaiju-sized Founding Titan]] fearfully recognizes it as "the Attack Titan" despite the obvious misnomer.
* EatingTheEnemy: It tries to eat Annie before the sight of her crying shocks Eren out of his berserk rage. Post-timeskip, due to Eren's desire to [[spoiler:obtain Marley's Titan Shifter powers, he eats Willy Tibur and his sister to obtain the War Hammer Titan power, tries to eat Porco Galliard to gain the Jaws Titan power, and expresses the intention to eat Reiner and obtain the Armored Titan power as well]].
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Punching another Titan to death.
* {{Expy}}: Its design and behavior in the initial appearance are rather reminiscent of [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Unit 01]].
* FeelNoPain: Subverted; Titan Shifters ''do'' feel pain regardless of their ability to regenerate, but Eren fights so viciously and with such complete disregard for his own body that it's easy to get the impression he must not feel anything.
* FightsLikeANormal: Uses boxing stances, chokeholds, and throws. He starts out relying solely on his SuperStrength, but making use of his hand-to-hand combat training allows him to overcome the other Shifters' greater experience and abilities.
* GlasgowGrin: This is a unique feature of Eren's version. With no lips or cheeks, its jaws are virtually fleshless. Its unusual mouth shape is why it's totally incapable of speech, unlike a few other Titans that exhibit the ability to HulkSpeak.
* GlassCannon: Though it possesses massive physical strength, a lack of defensive abilities and tendency towards self-injury are a liability in battle.
** However, its UnstoppableRage pushes it into LightningBruiser territory. Damage done to the "Rogue" Titan, both by itself and enemies, does next to nothing to slow it down or affect its ability to kill its target.
** After Eren acquires the "Harden" ability from his encounter with Rod Reiss, he significantly improves his Titan's defensive capabilities in combat, subverting its GlassCannon status.
* GiveMeLibertyOrGiveMeDeath: Kruger mentions that inheritors of the Attack Titan have always fought for the freedom of Eldia and itself, with us clearly seeing Kruger and the Yeagers mercilessly killing anyone who impedes that freedom, with or without knowing that they are. [[spoiler: Like with all other Titan shifters, the Attack Titan inheritor gives up their lives by allowing the new inheritor to eat them in order to transfer powers. Eventually, the final inheritor, Eren, really does die with the Attack Titan.]]
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: They glow green on occasion. When the "Rogue" Titan TurnsRed, its eyes glow ''blue'', which spells doom for its target.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Though capable of other attacks, he seems to like punching other Titans while his arms are still attached. In fact, overwhelming enemies with punches is implied to be its signature "feature" and the way it's intended to be used, as out of the Nine Titans it has abnormal SuperStrength and superb striking power.
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: The "Rogue" Titan frequently loses its arms, legs, and even parts of its head in battle, though it can quickly heal itself.
* HairColorSpoiler: Anime only: Its eye and hair color are an immediate clue to its true identity as Eren.
* HellishPupils: When fighting the Female Titan in the anime, it is so enraged its pupils become vertical slits.
* HeroicBuild: Eren Yeager and Eren Kruger's versions are distinctly ripped, [[FatBastard unlike most of the other Titans]]. In contrast, though, Grisha's had a [[StoutStrength muscular but stout frame]].
* HeyYouHaymaker: When the Female Titan hears running and roaring, it turns around and takes a right-hook square to the face.
* HorrifyingHero: Fights other Titans, but understandably evokes fear from the other soldiers. [[spoiler: However, as the story gradually turns into a ProtagonistJourneyToVillain for Eren, this is later subverted as the Attack Titan becomes the symbol of the "Eldian devils" that the rest of the world fears so much.]]
* HunterOfHisOwnKind: Due to Eren's desire to destroy all Titans.
* IJustWantToBeFree: In Chapter 88, Eren Kruger explains to Grisha that this Titan embodies the desire to move forward and to seek freedom. [[spoiler:Much later, this is revealed to not really be an inherent feature of the Titan per-se, but the result of Eren Yeager's powerful future will influencing ''all'' of his predecessors to relentlessly seek freedom just like himself]].
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:After it initially gains the upper-hand fighting the War-Hammer Titan, the War-Hammer Titan launches a massive, crystallized spike right through the Attack Titan]].
* InstantArmor: Part of being a Titan Shifter and demonstrated in Episode 9 where Eren partially transforms to block a cannonball. The resulting "armor" is half a Titan skeleton and a muscled arm. However, it is incapable of producing the crystalline exoskeleton utilized by the Female Titan. [[spoiler:After Eren drinks a bottle of "Armor" Titan Serum, he is able to do so.]]
* {{Irony}}: The Attack Titan is seen as a symbol of "freedom", embodying the RebelliousSpirit of the people of Eldia that will relentlessly pursue freedom. [[spoiler:It's bearers however are all subject to ''Eren's'' will, being forced to act in a way that ensures Eren's future goal of enacting the "Rumbling" comes to pass, Eren effectively stripping them of ''their'' freedom in the name of pursuing his ''own'' freedom, when even he is just as much a slave to his own future self's desires, making the bearers of the Attack Titan the least free of all.]]
* ItCanThink: Armin first notices that it seems to be aware of other Titans' weak points, and then it adopts a boxing stance. Much later on, it's heavily implied that [[spoiler:the Attack Titan possesses a will of its own to continuously seek out freedom, no matter the cost. Its influence is apparently strong enough to replace the will of its host, similar to the Founding Titan possessed by a member of the Royal Fritz family. This implication possibly sheds some light on Eren's complete 180° change in his personality following the TimeSkip after discovering what was in his father's basement]]. It is later revealed that the power of the Attack Titan is [[spoiler:to transcend time and look into the future. In other words, all the users of the Attack Titan also inherit the memories of their successors.]] It is also implied that [[spoiler:Eren has been controlling all the people who held the Attack Titan to strive for freedom, meaning that [[SubvertedTrope the Attack Titan itself isn't thinking]], but ''he'' is]].
* LateArrivalSpoiler: Believe it or not, Eren being able to turn into a Titan was initially a ''huge'' [[TheReveal reveal]] and the first clue that there's some sort of deeper connection between humans and Titans (who were initially thought to be some other species entirely). Nowadays, pretty much all of the merchandise and new trailers spoil that Eren is a Titan while the existence of the Titan Shifters in general is also common knowledge among the anime-watching crowd.
* LegacyCharacter: Its holders Eren Yeager, [[spoiler:and Grisha Yeager and Eren Kruger before him]], were chosen because of their indomitable drive for freedom and their overwhelming fighting spirit [[spoiler:[[StableTimeLoop by Eren Yeager himself]]]]. As such, they are entrusted to recover the Coordinate from the Eldian Royal Family, or at the very least rouse them from their inaction; this latter aspect, as it turned out, didn't work out and the Coordinate had to be wrest from the Royal Family's hands.
* MegaManning: Averted. By all indications, it can't seem to replicate the skin-hardening technique that it saw the Female Titan use. [[spoiler:Survey Corps experiments to see if Eren could do it failed, and not for lack of trying. The intense effort even started to degrade the Titan's body and start melding it with Eren's.]]
* MissedHimByThatMuch:
** The only reason the bearded Mindless Titan that ate Eren at Trost didn't become the Attack Titan's holder was because it swallowed Eren whole; still, had Eren perished inside its stomach, the power would have been adopted by that Titan's original human.
** Had the military court sentenced Eren to death as the [=MPs=], the merchant's association and the Church of the Walls wanted, both the Attack Titan and the Coordinate would have been lost to the people of the Three Walls; [[spoiler:as such, each of those powers has a 50% possibility of ending in an undetermined baby from the Walls or in an Eldian of the ghettos in Marley]].
** Eren was stopped from eating Annie out of fear that her intel would be lost, enabling her to encase herself in crystal. Had Eren eaten her, he would have gained her Titan Power, making his own that much stronger, as well as her memories.
** Later, the Smiling Titan would have inherited it had it been successful in eating Eren during the Clash of the Titans Arc. Granted, it would have been an enormous can of worms had it happened, as that Titan's human [[spoiler:happened to be Dina Fritz, Grisha's first wife and member of the Eldian Royal Family, swallower of Carla (his second wife), and she would have swallowed the remaining person of that family (Eren), who swallowed Grisha, who himself had swallowed the holder of the Coordinate (Frieda Reiss), giving the Coordinate to Dina... who could have been subjected to [[SuicidalPacifism the Will of the First King]] too as all the Kings of the Walls had been, rendering her inactive to the Titan plight of the people of the Walls]].
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Eren's Titan form lacks cheeks and lips, giving its jaws a skull-like appearance.
* MoreThanMindControl: It's implied that the goals of the Attack Titan power supersede the holder's own will, as it leads some of its owners astray from their initial goals (as shown with Eren Kruger, who became a jaded torturer, and Eren Yeager, who became a dispassionate and calculating individual). One thing that can be surmised from the Attack Titan is that, while it's a relentless seeker of freedom, ''[[GoodIsNotNice it's not a pursuant of peace by any measure]]''.
* MorphicResonance: Shares Eren's hair and eye color. [[spoiler:It also turns out to have traits distinctly shared by Grisha Yaeger and his Titan that Eren doesn't have.]]
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: The creator cites MMA fighter Yushin Okami as the basis for its lean and muscular appearance.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Despite using boxing stances, chokeholds, and throws, ultimately its fighting style is smashing every Titan it comes across into a bloody pulp.
* NoKillLikeOverkill: Fond of destroying Titans it's already killed.
* NoNameGiven: Its official name wasn't revealed until Chapter 88, 81 chapters after its first appearance.
* NonLinearCharacter: [[spoiler:The holders of this Titan can glimpse the memories of their predecessors '''and''' successors, allowing a form of precognition. While inside the Paths, Eren is able to influence his younger self and Grisha by showing them specific glimpses of the future. This is also the reason that Eren Kruger spoke of Mikasa and Armin, years before their births]].
* OffWithHisHead: Thanks to the Female Titan. It returns the favor later.
* OhCrap: Causes this ''in other Titans''. Most noticeable in the battles against Female. Both fights are a series of OhCrap moments for her.
* OneManArmy: Capable of dispatching large numbers of Titans with relative ease, and to be an enormous pain in the ass for other Titan Shifters.
%%* OneWingedAngel: Specifically, it's Eren's OneWingedAngel form.
* PerpetualFrowner: Its default facial expression while fighting is a rage-fueled scowl, but even in the few times Eren is doing something mundane in his Titan form (like training with Hange), his general face and jaw shape makes it look like he constantly has an angry frown. Ditto for Grisha and Kruger.
* PhlebotinumRebel: By design. Kruger states that the Attack Titan is a relentless pursuant of freedom, and as such, it did not conform to the control of either the Eldians or the Marleyans following the Titan War. The Attack Titan ''will'' fight endlessly for freedom.
* PointyEars: They help keep him from looking too human and too deep in UncannyValley.
* PowerFist: [[spoiler:After extensive training with its newly-acquired Hardening ability, the "Rogue" Titan can now concentrate the ability on specific body parts like the Female Titan.]] This is shown to great effect during [[spoiler:its rematch with the Armored Titan when a single, well-placed, hardened punch on the Armored Titan's face completely shatters it.]]
* PowerMisidentification: [[spoiler:Eren Yeager and Eren Kruger describe the Attack Titan's unique trait to be the ability to receive memories from future holders. However, this is only possible due to the last Attack Titan, Eren Yeager, using the full power of the Founding Titan to influence things from the Paths, which means that this is not an ability unique to the Attack Titan, but rather a consequence of the future wielder also being the inheritor of the Founder.]]
* PunchedAcrossTheRoom: Eren initially tries to out-punch the Armored Titan in their first fight, but MusclesAreMeaningful is in play and the leaner Rogue Titan is literally launched into the air by its punches several times while his own punches do ''nothing'' to slow him down. Eren has to resort to using [[spoiler:Annie's]] old [[WeakButSkilled self-defense techniques]] to get the better of him. Similarly, during his rematch against the Colossal Titan, [[spoiler:Eren first tries a direct approach and gets booted the length of Shiganshina District as a result]].
* RebelliousSpirit: According to Grisha Yeager, the bearers of the Attack Titan do not obey anyone and relentlessly pursue freedom. The Attack Titan can outright oppose the Founding Titan's MindControl, which is why it was able to evade from Marley's control after the Great Titan War. [[spoiler:In a case of {{irony}}, it's revealed the Attack Titan itself isn't compelling the bearers, ''Eren'' is. Eren's future self compels all bearers to relentlessly pursue "freedom", i.e. perform actions that will allow Eren's goal of enacting the "Rumbling" to occur, regardless of their own desires, as shown when Eren made Grisha massacre the Reiss family to obtain the power of the Coordinate despite Grisha's desire not to. In the future Eren's pursuit of freedom, he forces all other bearers to submit to his own will.]]
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: It's pointed out that Eren's strength is monstrous even by Titan standards, but his [[GlassCannon body is still relatively frail like any other Titan]] and can't handle the force of his own punches; he tends to break his arms and hands with every landed hit, leaving him open to counters. [[spoiler:He gets better later on into the story, as he acquires the ability to harden his flesh like Annie and Reiner.]]
* RoarBeforeBeating: Consistently before every single fight it partakes in.
* SecretIdentity: Eren Yeager, though his identity is quickly revealed.
* {{Seers}}: Every Titan power has its unique ability. The Attack Titan's true ability is [[spoiler:to transcend time itself and foresee the future. Unlike the other nine Titans, those who become the Attack Titans inherit the memories of their predecessors ''and'' future successors as well. This means that future successors can (to a certain extent) retrocausally influence the choices and actions of their predecessors using the Paths. They can even show their predecessors glimpses of their future memories. The most notable case was Eren Yeager influencing his father Grisha. Eren also claims to obey the orders of his future self.]] Just as many Founding Titans are enslaved by the ideals of their predecessor, Karl Fritz, the Attack Titans [[spoiler:are inclined to obey the will of their ultimate successor, Eren Yeager who seeks freedom.]] This is the true reason as to why the Attack Titan seeks freedom in every era and doesn't obey anyone.
* SelfHarm: It hits so hard it tends to damage its own limbs, [[{{Determinator}} not that it keeps him down for long]].
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler:For both the King of the Walls and the Marleyans, as neither were able to procure it during the Great Titan War or in the conflicts thereafter. [[TheUnreveal It's not quite known how its holders were able to accomplish this in the first place]], as the Kings of Eldia are supposedly omnipotent. There are several possibilities as to how the Attack Titan remained free from influence, including the chance that it might be immune to the Will of the First King, and/or that it was made as a security measure against the King. Goes to show that after the Fall of Wall Maria, the Attack Titan wrecked both the Kings of the Walls and the Marleyans, all on its own]].
* TheSpeechless: During experiments, it is confirmed that Eren is unable to speak in Titan form due to the shape of his mouth.
* StableTimeLoop: [[spoiler:Due to its [[{{Seers}} powers]], its reputation as a relentless seeker of freedom is a result of one of these, as Eren Yeager manipulated all previous wielders to act in such a fashion to lead into his ultimate [[OmnicidalManiac plan]], rather than it being a facet of the Titan form itself.]]
* SuperStrength: Even for a Titan of its size, it's much stronger than usual; Eren is able to carry a gigantic boulder several times larger than he is and use it to seal the broken gate in Trost. Similarly, Kruger could lift a large ship over his shoulders and break it in half effortlessly.
* SummonBiggerFish: For humanity.
* SuperMode: In the anime, when Eren is sufficiently enraged when fighting Annie, the Attack Titan becomes covered in glowing VolcanicVeins, its body superheats to the point of causing the air around it to combust, and its teeth sharpen into fangs.
* SuperpowerLottery: It's curious that Eren ended up inheriting a Titan Power that was perfect for hand-to-hand combat, his own specialty as noted by Shadis during training. While by no means a bad soldier, Eren's strengths were not deemed to be suited for Titan combat, that is, until he found himself on a Titan body. [[spoiler: This comes to make sense much, ''much'' later, as Eren is revealed to have used the Titan's unique ability to see into the future to subtly (or not so subtly in the case of of his father) influence his predecesors to act in a way that would one day result in him inheriting this Titan in the first place- making his apparent luck in receiving the Attack Titan a Subverted Trope.]].
* StoutStrength: Grisha's version had this body type in contrast to the Erens' [[HeroicBuild heroic builds]].
* ThermalDissonance: All known Titans are known to have [[MyBloodRunsHot really high body temperatures]], and the "Rogue" Titan is no different. However, when Eren partially transforms in order to [[MundaneUtility pick up a spoon from the ground]] it was remarked upon by Hange how the shoulder was burning hot, but the spoon was not deformed by the heat in any way.
* TombstoneTeeth: The Attack Titan — when held by Eren Yeager — has no lips or cheeks, just a massive number of identical teeth set directly into its jaws; which prevents it from talking but comes in very handy for biting. As the series progresses, the Attack Titan becomes an antagonistic force, [[spoiler:as Eren turns on his friends, tries to claim the other Titan powers for himself, and instigates the Rumbling]].
* TranslationTrainWreck: The whole kerfuffle over translating "Shingeki no Kyojin" has lead to Eren's Titan being stuck with the relatively inaccurate English name "Attack Titan" as opposed to something more appropriate. Still, having gone with something more accurate earlier would have spoiled certain aspects of the manga for both the original Japanese and the English translation, as it would have narrowed down the significance of the title, which in the first place was deliberately ambiguous in Japanese (as "Shingeki no Kyojin" has multiple meanings, narrowed down in Chapter 88).
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening: How it first shows up. [[spoiler:After Eren saves Armin from being eaten by a Titan early in the Battle of Trost, he ends up getting swallowed instead, and losing his arm in the process. While inside the Titan's stomach, Eren's refusal to die such a pointless death awakens the latent powers bestowed on him. He transforms into his Titan form while inside the other Titan, killing it in the process.]]
* TurnsRed: In the anime only, during its fight with the Female Titan. While in this state, it becomes even more ruthless, its skin glows red and [[BurningWithAnger combusts in some places due to overheating]], and it can continue fighting even while critically wounded. Its teeth also become noticeably sharper and its eyes glow blue rather than the usual green.
* UnskilledButStrong:
** Compared to the other shifters, the "Rogue" doesn't have much in the way of tactics, combat skill, or defensive abilities. What it does have is strength far beyond even the other Titans and enough rage to fight through even otherwise crippling injuries.
** [[spoiler:Seems to be the case after Eren steals the Warhammer Titan and uses its powers in battle. Unlike Lady Tybur- who was crafting not only spikes, but hammers, flogs, crossbows, etc. with her powers- Eren only uses the Warhammer's weapon crafting ability to wildly shoot a ridiculous amount of spikes at Reiner and Porco. The crazy thing is though, the Warhammer's power is just so damn ''strong'' that he very nearly kills both of them with the spikes alone before being [[BigDamnHeroes stopped by Pieck]]]].
* UnstoppableRage: This seems to be its default state of being. Mikasa compares him to a physical manifestation of humanity's rage. Accurate, considering that Eren was on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge at the time.
* VillainousRescue: Subverted. It slays another Titan that was about to eat Mikasa, and everyone believes it to be this trope. However, once they realize the Titan is Eren it all makes sense.
* VolcanicVeins: When Eren gets really, ''really'' angry versus the Female Titan in the anime and it has been beaten to a pulp, it regenerates extremely rapidly so that the flesh almost looks molten, its veins glow, and it becomes even more dangerous than before. [[TurnsRed This is a really good time to run for anyone its facing]].
* WalkingSpoiler: The very first hint that there is something much bigger going on with the Titans, and reveals the existence of the Titan Shifters.
* TheWorfEffect: [[spoiler:Its hardened skin (which could protect against a collapsing cavern roof) is no match for the War-Hammer Titan's hammer, as she smashes through ''both'' of his hardened fists and completely destroys his head when he attempts to block a strike from above. With Eren's human body then exposed, he'd have been done for had it not been for [[BigDamnHeroes Mikasa's]] timely intervention]].
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: Uses several holds in his fight with the [[spoiler:Armored Titan, such as the triangle choke, armbar and kneebar.]]

A Titan which took part in the attack on Reiner and Bertolt's hometown after the fall of Wall Maria. It reappears during the battle at Castle Utgard, and is noted for its small size, and for climbing and swinging around like a primate. It's later revealed that it's the 104th Trainee Corps Ymir's Titan form and it holds the power of the Jaws Titan, one of the Nine Titan Powers of Ymir Fritz. It is one of the few Titans that is capable of conscious rudimentary speech.

-->'''Note:''' ''This entry deals exclusively with the Jaws Titan form of Ymir from the 104th. For the other Jaws Titan forms, see the "Jaws Titan" entries in the "Warriors" section above.''

----
* BlackEyesOfEvil: Has very large pupils, often making it look like its eyes are completely black. [[spoiler:In truth, this is played with: it's not "evil" so much as ruthless and willing to do anything for Krista, even when that involves going against the protagonists]].
* BusCrash: It's revealed that [[spoiler:the Titan's true name is the Jaws Titan, and that at some point during the four-year timeskip Ymir was eaten by Galliard to inherit this power]].
* CreepilyLongArms: In comparison to its hunched over body with short legs.
* DanceBattler: Its fighting style involves a lot of swinging and jumping, thus giving the impression that it's dancing.
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: In spite of being the same Titan Power, it looks way different from all of the other forms of the Jaws Titan shown, lacking the signature yellow mane and large, external white jaws that they have. In the manga, flashbacks make its jaws more robust to make its appearance slightly more in line with the other Jaw Titans.
* EyeScream: Mikasa slashes out its left eye. Unlike other Titans, it reacts by screaming violently.
* FangsAreEvil: Has scary pointed fangs. [[spoiler:(See the spoiler in BlackEyesOfEvil above.)]]
* FeelNoPain: Subverted. Unlike other Titans or Titan Shifters, the Jaws Titan reacts to injury in a manner that suggests it experiences pain in a normal fashion.
* FemmeFatalons: A characteristic of the Jaws Titan, aside from fangs, is AbsurdlySharpClaws.
* GlassCannon: Relatively small for a Titan and not particularly stronger than the rest of them, but makes good use of its speed and agility, making it an effective killer.
* HulkSpeak: One of the few Titans capable of limited speech.
* IdenticalStranger: In a sense. She looks very similar to the Titan who [[spoiler:kills Farlan and Isabel.]]
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Unique among the Titans due to possessing a wide mouth full of shark-like teeth. [[spoiler:Prior to eating Marcel its teeth were normal-looking.]]
* MorphicResonance. Ymir's Titan form retained its ape-like form from before it devoured [[spoiler:Marcel]] to become the Jaws Titan. This implies that, should a Titan with stunted features like the House Titan (who has diminutive limbs compared to its size, making them useless) and Rod Reiss' Titan form (whose limbs are barely usable) devour a Titan Shifter, [[BlessedWithSuck they would still retain those stunted features]].
* PerpetualFrowner: It seems to have a constant, angry grimace, regardless of what it's doing.
* RunningOnAllFours: Notable for being one of the few Titans able to keep pace with the Survey Corps' [[CoolHorse horses]].
* ScaryTeeth: Unlike most Titans, it has a mouthful of sharp, pointed teeth.
* SecretIdentity: [[spoiler:Ymir, who spent several decades trapped in her Titan form until gaining the powers of a Shifter by killing Marcel]]. Less so compared to some of the others on this page, as it's the only one [[spoiler:of the Titan Shifters who is revealed to be a Shifter ''before'' the audience sees her Titan form]].
* ShoulderTeammate: Comically, when choosing to assist the Armored Titan, its means of defending it is to ride on its back and shoulders and slash at anything that gets too close.
* SinisterSchnoz: A large, hooked nose, which is odd since [[spoiler:Ymir doesn't have a big nose in human form. Although ''Marcel'' did]].
* WallCrawl: An important aspect of its fighting style.
* WickedWitch: Its design strongly echos the classic Hag or Witch, in particular the type that devoured children. Long, stringy black hair? Check. Hooked nose? Check. Long, clawed fingers? Check. Sharp teeth for eating kids? Check.
* WildCard: [[spoiler:As one of the Marley-controlled Titan Powers, the Jaws Titan as possessed by Marcel was supposed to either infiltrate the Three Walls alongside the Colossal and Armored Titans, or to attack Shinganshina with them. However, Marcel was eaten by a Mindless Titan, who upon gaining her consciousness back as an individual, had nothing to do to either attack or infiltration plans and was not under Marley control.]]
* WildHair: Long, and gives it a rather creepy appearance.

!! Ymir Fritz' Titan Form/ The Founding Titan
[[quoteright:207:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/founding_titan.png]]
[[caption-width-right:207:'''1st:''' Ymir Fritz's Titan form; '''2nd:''' The Founding Titan form of The First King; '''3rd:''' Frieda Reiss's Founding Titan; '''4th:''' Eren Yeager's Founding Titan]]

The Founding Titan wields virtually [[MindControl absolute power]] over all Subjects of Ymir and the Titans, as long as its inheritor belongs to the royal bloodline. Karl Fritz used the Founding Titan to enact the exodus of the Eldians from Marley to the Island of Paradis, to erect the Three Walls to both protect and contain the Eldians, and to erase the minds of most of the Eldian population inside. The Titan Power is known as the "Coordinate" because all the ephemeral laylines that connect all of the Eldians converge on it.

The Founding Titan is feared by the Kingdom of Marley because of its tremendous power. Marley intends to capture the Founding Titan to eliminate the threat of the Rumbling[[note]]A cataclysmic event where thousands of [[{{Kaiju}} Wall Titans]] slumbering within the Walls awaken and obliterate human civilization[[/note]].

It should be noted that, due to Grisha Yeager's actions, the Founding Titan line is currently mixed with the Attack Titan line.
-->See the [[Characters/AttackOnTitanEldia Eldia character page]] for tropes relating to Ymir Fritz, the first bearer of the Founding Titan.
----

* ButterFace:
** Frieda's version. Unlike Annie, Frieda's Titan actually had ''skin'', so [[https://attackontitan.fandom.com/wiki/File:Grisha_in_the_chapel.png her physique wasn't as hard on the eyes]] but, as if to make up for this, her Titan instead had a [[https://attackontitan.fandom.com/wiki/File:Founding_Titan_character_image_(Frieda_Reiss).png demonic]] NightmareFace. Interestingly, this directly contradicts history books that depict the Founding Titan as a beautiful, goddess-like figure.
** [[spoiler:The true Founding Titan, contrary to all other depictions, was also this in life. Ymir's titan form was flesh with curves, except for her face, which was just a ''skull''.]]
* ConditionalPowers:
** According to Eren Kruger, any individual that acquires one of the Titan Powers is bound to die 13 years after gaining them, and by proxy, Ymir Fritz was no exception; as a matter of fact, it's her circumstances which made this the rule, as it's stated that no Titan Power holder may surpass Ymir in power.
** According to Rod Reiss (in reference to the First King, a holder of the Progenitor), only the members of the Eldian Royal Family can use the power to its full extent. As shown later, even partial use of the power requires direct contact with a Royal and its extent is limited [[note]] For the record, Eren was able to manipulate Titans due to his physical contact with the Smiling Titan, the Mindless Titan form of Dina Fritz, a member of the royal family, and it extended to mere moments after when Eren was fleeing and directed the same Titans against Reiner and Bertolt; by the time came to deal with Rod Reiss' Titan form weeks after, the effect had worn away and Eren was unable to use the powers against it. It so happens that contact with this Titan was impossible at the time due to it spewing fire like a furnace, so even if Eren had been aware of the contact rule, he would have been unable anyway. Eren later realizes that contact with a royal Titan or shifter is the only way he can get full access to the Coordinate power of the Royal Family, but decides to keep this information to himself for fear of Historia's safety[[/note]]. [[spoiler: Later, Eren uses the Paths to convince Ymir to be free, releasing the restraints on a non-royal and successfully gains full power of the Founding Titan, though he still needs to be in contact with Zeke to utilize it.]]
* DeusExitMachina: Enforced. While the holder of the Founding Titan is nigh unstoppable (if they're a royal and know what they're doing), the First King's will took over every royal holder of the Titan and forced them to inaction, meaning that changes to the status quo can only happen when the Titan is in the hands of someone who can't actually use it. [[spoiler: Eren Defies this and uses MentalTimeTravel in his master plan to ultimately put himself in a position to remove this restriction. And once he does, he quickly becomes virtually unstoppable with full control over the Coordinate]].
* EvilPowerVacuum: Invoked. According to the Kingdom of Marley, Ymir Fritz supposedly created the Titans to subdue the Marleyans, and afterwards, the Eldians started an ethnic cleansing upon them that lasted seventeen centuries until the Marleyans obtained seven of the Titan Powers and caused the Titan War, which was contested until the 145th Eldian King fled from the fight and sequestered himself and his people within the Three Walls at Paradis Island. As the Eldian Restoration Movement argues, the Titan War actually caused the Nine Powers to fight between themselves, until the First King refused to keep fighting.
* HoldingBackThePhlebotinum:
** It's the absolutely mightiest Titan Power available, but can only be properly used by a direct descendant of Ymir Fritz, and any royal holders of the Coordinate Titan are subject to [[SuicidalPacifism the Will of the First King]], which prevents them from using it to meaningfully alter Paradis's situation. The only current viable candidate, [[spoiler:Queen Historia Reiss]], refuses to use it because she doesn't want to inherit the Will and be constrained to keeping up the status quo. Also, getting the Founding Titan power would mean eating the current (non-royal) holder, [[spoiler:Eren Yeager]], a dear friend of hers. [[spoiler: Turns out there's ''another'' way to gain full control of the Coordinate, but that requires Ymir's direct permission. Which Eren successfully exploited, to become the first non-Royal ''ever'' to control the Founding Titan.]]
** It's speculated by Tom Xavier that [[spoiler:the holder of the Coordinate can not only manipulate the minds of the Eldians, but also their physiology, as there are records of the King of the Eldians completely eradicating an epidemic in such manner in the past. This led him to speculate that the holder of the Coordinate can theoretically neuter the entire Eldian population, eliminating their capacity to reproduce. Zeke takes this to heart, and makes it his life's mission as the holder of the Beast Titan, and as a member of the Royal Family. It's further implied that the First King could have had the capacity to do so, but didn't because that would have left the Eldians relatively unpunished]].
* HowDoIShotWeb:
** The Founding Titan may have been stronger than the other Titans, but that isn't much help when you have no idea what you're doing with it, which is how Grisha (the Attack Titan) was able to kill Frieda (Founding Titan) after a brief struggle.
** Eren is initially unaware of how to actually control the power, and tries to activate it to no avail when attempting to control Rod Reiss's Titan. Eventually, he theorizes that he has to be making physical contact with a member of the royal family to use it.
* LargeAndInCharge: [[spoiler:Eren]]'s Founding Titan is the largest Titan of the story, easily dwarfing the Wall Titans (which are themselves 50 meters tall).
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: The Founding Titan can manipulate the memories of the Subjects of Ymir. Karl Fritz uses this to erase the memories of his subjects on Paradis.
* MookMaker:
** It can transform Subjects of Ymir into Mindless Titans and [[MindControl control them]].
** [[spoiler:Once convinced to help Eren Yeager in his genocidal quest, [[MonsterProgenitor Ymir Fritz]] uses the Founding Titan to create a Beast Titan to strike down Marley's airships. When the Survey Corps engage him, he creates an entire army of past intelligent titans, including Lady Tybur, Bertolt, and Galliard's titan forms. This later becomes a liability as the titans are only under Eren's control when their consciousness isn't woken up. Armin and Zeke awakens them, resulting in the titans of Bertolt, Grisha, Kruger, Xavier, Ymir (the Scout, not the Progenitor), and the Galliard brothers turning on the rest of them to help their friends.]]
* MorphicResonance: [[spoiler:Ymir Fritz' titan form had ribs sticking out of its body, which made it resemble the organism she gained her power from. Eren Yeager's fully-realized Founding Titan resembles it even further, being a gigantic monstrosity that "walks" with its ribs like a caterpillar's legs.]]
* PhysicalGod: Anyone who possesses the power of the Founding Titan is for all intents and purposes, a deity. [[spoiler: Only two people are known to have used the Founding Titan to it's maximum potential: the original user of the power Ymir Fritz, and the protagonist Eren Yeager.]]
* RoyaltySuperPower: Unlike the other Nine Titans, only members of the royal bloodline (a.k.a the Fritz family) can utilize the Founding Titan. [[spoiler:Due to the unique circumstances of his inheriting the power, Eren Yeager is able to use the Founding Titan. However, that is only as long as he is connected to Zeke. When the latter sacrifices himself to stop the Rumbling, Eren loses access to the Coordinate.]]
* SkullForAHead: [[spoiler:Ymir Fritz's Titan form]] had a skull with hair in lieu of a head, despite the rest of the body being solid flesh. Other Titans like the Galliards' Jaws Titan feature something akin to a ghastly faceplate or heavily sunken features, but never something as explicit as a complete lack of muscle.
* StoryBreakerPower: The Founder Titan's powers are so great that it can control hordes of Mindless Titans, control minds and memories of Eldians and transform thousands of Eldians into Colossus Titans. Later, it is revealed that it can even [[spoiler:modify genetics of Eldians for a variety of purposes like saving them from epidemics. Zeke intended to use that ability to sterilize the entire Eldian race, ending the era of Titans forever. Eren played along with him just so he can use him as a means to an end.]]
* {{Telepathy}}: Inheritors of the Founding Titan can mentally communicate with Subjects of Ymir. [[spoiler:Eren demonstrates this ability on a massive scale.]]
* TheUnreveal:
** While it's known that other Titan Powers follow the ethereal pathways that all Eldians share, it's not quite known whether the Coordinate Titan follows the same rule, because it's the ''Coordinate'', meaning that it's in the dead-center of it all. As it is, it's a mystery what would happen should it not find a suitable host (a member of the Eldian royal family) if its holder is killed, or what would happen to the other Titan Powers without it.
** Ultimately, it's never revealed exactly [[spoiler: ''what'' the Titan powers really are. We see that the source of the power attached itself to Ymir as she fell into a tree, but we're given no hint as to what it's actually supposed to ''be'', mystical or scientific or otherwise.]]
** [[spoiler: We never learn where Ymir Fritz's titan came from. All other titans were made by her laboring in the Path to create their bodies from sand, but since Ymir herself could transform into a titan before this and it was shown she was all alone for the two millenia she spent there, it's unknown who or what created her titans.]]
* ThisMeansWar: The existence of the Coordinate is considered an inherent threat to humanity, and it's the main reason for all the hostilities related to Eldia, Marley and the world at large.
* TopHeavyGuy: Inverted with the First King's Titan form, which is a bottom heavy guy. It's legs are very strong and muscular but it's arm are scrawny, and it's chest has exposed ribs.

During the climax to the battle of Shiganshina, Armin is mortally wounded by the Colossal Titan after successfully acting as a distraction so Eren could sneak up from behind and rip Bertolt out of it. After a fair bit of debate between whether to revive Armin or Erwin (who was also fatally wounded) with the Titan-serum he brought, Levi gives the serum to Armin and has his Mindless Titan eat Bertolt, transferring the power of the Colossal Titan to the people of Paradis and turning Armin into a Titan Shifter. From what has been seen so far, this Titan appears similar to Bertolt's, albeit with a much more gaunt body.

-->'''Note:''' ''This entry deals exclusively with the Colossal Titan form of Armin Arlert. For Bertolt's Colossal Titan form, see the "Colossal Titan" entry in the "Warriors" section above''

----
* BashBrothers: With Eren, the Attack Titan. [[{{Timeskip}} Over the course of three years]], they evidently destroyed 32 ships sent by the Marleyans to spy on the Eldians. And according to Zeke, some of those ships were war ships, too.
* ConditionalPowers: Armin is a subject of the Curse of Ymir, meaning that from his devouring of Bertolt he only has 13 years of lifespan. After the time skip, he has roughly nine years of life left.
* FantasticNuke: This seems to be an inherent trait shared by both Colossal Titans, as Armin only needs to transform once to set off a massive explosion that wipes out the harbor of Marley's navy and is visible from a distance.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: Contrasting with Bertolt's Titan, which typically sported the same determined expression as its shifter, Armin's Colossal Titan sports a somber and melancholic expression that reflects his reluctance to do [[DeadlyEuphemism what has to be done]].
* HorrifyingHero: It's an enormous, skinless horror with a LovecraftianSuperpower just like the last guy, only this time it's fighting for Eldia instead of Marley.
* OutOfFocus: Out of all the titans post-timeskip, Armin's Colossal Titan makes the fewest appearances, and significantly fewer than Bertolt's use of the titan. Armin only ever uses it twice: once to destroy Marley's ports, and again to [[spoiler:kill Eren in his Final Titan form.]] It should be noted that during the timeskip, Armin used the Colossal Titan many times to defend Paradis from guerilla attacks from Marley.
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: Armin's Titan form is featured prominently in a special trailer for the video game adaptation of the arc where he acquires the Colossal Titan, spoiling not only its appearance but one of the largest surprises of the arc.
* WalkingSpoiler: Naturally, [[{{Deuteragonist}} Armin]] becoming a Titan Shifter -- the iconic ''Colossal Titan'' no less -- is a pretty huge turn of events.
* TheWorfEffect: [[spoiler:Armin's last use of the Colossal Titan was to use its explosive transformation to kill Eren and the "source of all living matter." However, it fails, with the creature being unharmed and Eren transforming into an Attack/Colossal Titan hybrid that trounces Armin in battle. However, Armin was able to provide the distraction necessary for Mikasa to kill Eren herself.]]

Upon revealing his true plans to the Eldian people across the world, Eren Yeager fully unlocked the power of the Coordinate and the Source of All Organic Matter to unleash the Wall Titans and flatten the world beyond. In the process, he is transformed into the greatest Titan the world has ever seen: the Final Titan. Facially, the Final Titan resembles Eren's Attack Titan form, but beyond that is bare boned with an absolutely immense spinal cord, where the ribs act similarly to centipede legs.

-->'''Note:''' ''This entry deals exclusively with the Coordinate form of Eren Yeager seen during the final arc. For the previous forms of the Coordinate or the Coordinate in general, see the "Coordinate Titan" entry above.''

----

* AlwaysABiggerFish: Eclipses any threat the Colossal, Beast, and Rod's Mindless Titan could have posed rather quickly, being able to control what is essentially a walking army of [[FantasticNuke Fantastic Nukes]], forcing the nations of Marley and Eldia to ally for what is likely the first and only time in their existence.
* AllThereInTheManual:
** This form's name comes [[WordOfGod exclusively from Isayama]] months after the manga's conclusion.
** The "Currently Publically Available Information" slides suggests that the Final Titan is an entirely different Titan than the Attack or Founding Titan, and is said to be a FusionDance of those two titans as well as the War Hammer and the Beast Titan (via absorbing Zeke into the Paths). Its length is hundreds of meters and it moves by swaying its bones side-to-side regardless of land or sea. The form that Eren assumes after Armin destroys most of the Final Titan's body is said to be a Colossal Titan variant and at least has the Attack Titan's powers. Eren transformed despite losing royal blood on sheer determination alone.
* AmbiguousSituation: How much Ymir is part of the mental FusionDance between Eren and the Source of the Titans is played rather mysteriously, as she manifests and helps the titan but seems to have goals separate from either of them.
* ApocalypseMaiden: Its visage is one of the last things most of the world's populace sees before they are ground into dust by its Titan army.
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: An army of Colossal Titans (each of them almost two hundred feet tall) look like ''children'' next to this monstrosity.
* BigBad: Once it is finally revealed, it quickly becomes this. It's also unique in that it represents a sort of FusionDance between the BigBad and [[GreaterScopeVillain Greater Scope Villains]]: Eren Yeager, Ymir Fritz, and the Source of All Organic Matter itself.
* ClippedWingAngel: Emerges one last time as a Colossal Titan-esque monster, but is dispatched over the course of one chapter as opposed to the entire arc that was spent killing off its initial form. For added bonus, its only known powers are that of an intelligent Colossal Titan and Eren's physical combat skill, in stark contrast to its previous form commanding a horde of Colossal Titans and summoning past Nine Titans.
* DemBones: Aside from its plated face, it is composed entirely of a massive human-esque skeleton with an insane amount of ribs that act as legs. The only seemingly organic pieces are various tendons hanging from the bones allowing for movement.
* DissonantSerenity: While Eren is in this form, he is constantly in bliss believing he is soaring over the Earth.
* EvilCounterpart: Its final form is this to Armin, being a Colossal Titan with long hair who wants to re-merge with the Source of All Organic Matter and continue the rumbling.
* EvilerThanThou: Zeke wanted to euthanize the Eldians people. The nation of Marley wants to eradicate Paradis and maintain its grip as a global superpower as well as its continuous oppression of Eldians. This ''thing'' will stop at nothing until 99% of humanity is ash.
* FinalBoss: Of the series. The goal of killing it causes an EnemyMine between the Warriors and Survey Corps, as the threat it represents will jeopardize all life outside of Paradis.
* FusionDance: Between the Attack, War Hammer, and Coordinate Titans in a physical sense. In a mental sense, it is this between Eren and the Source of All Organic Matter, with Ymir ambiguously being a part of the fusion too.
* KingMook: Effectively becomes this in its final form, being a Colossal Titan at the same height of Bertolt's and Armin's titan forms, as well as sporting its signature long hair and the intelligence it posses as one of the Nine Titans.
* KnightOfCerebus: Takes the stakes of the manga to truly apocalyptic levels.
* LesserOfTwoEvils: Eren considered it this compared to Zeke's euthanasia and Marley's continued slavery of the Eldians. [[InsaneTrollLogic In practice, however...]]
* MookMaker: Can spawn all those who have ever wielded one of the Titan Powers to defend itself, although the challenge they represent is ''far'' beyond what any Mindless Titan would offer.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: ''The Final Titan'' has a name that evokes its goal of a FinalSolution offered to all of humanity outside of Paradis.
* NightmareFace: The Final Titan's sole expression is one of unadulterated rage, looking nothing short of the devil himself. This provides an interesting contrast to Eren's mental DissonantSerenity.
* OffWithHisHead: The Final Titan is dispatched this way ''twice''. First, the initial form is decapitated via explosion, then the final form, and Eren by extension, is beheaded by a mournful Mikasa.
* OneWingedAngel: The ultimate culmination of Eren's plan: a combination of the Coordinate, War Hammer, and Attack Titan powers that can manifest any other past shifters at will as pawns, giving it access to every unique power we have seen from the Shifter's thus far and more.
* RemovedAchillesHeel: Unlike every other titan, the human piloting the titan is not in the nape of its neck. Even if it was, the fact that its entire body is made of hardened bone means that using swords or Thunder Spears would be useless anyway. To defeat Eren, the Alliance had to separate the titan's head from its body and blow it up with the Colossal Titan's explosive transformation. Even then, Eren survived, and could only be killed by [[OffWithHisHead decapitating his real head]] within the titan's mouth.
* RuleOfSymbolism:
** The upper body of the titan is held up by strings, giving the impression of Eren being a puppet.
** The Final Titan is always surrounded by Colossal Titans, the same titans that acted as the walls that Eren lamented living behind for years. Eren never left the walls, they follow him wherever he goes.
* WalkingSpoiler: Eren's iconic Attack Titan becoming the FinalBoss of the series can hardly be considered anything less than a massive turn of events.
* TheWorfEffect: Pushes every single fighter in the series to their limits, causing an EnemyMine between previously warring factions where they're barely even able to keep up. While they defeat it, it comes at immense personal loss and the devastation of most of the world.

* ChekhovsGunman: [[spoiler:A Titan created from a member of the Royal line, contact with her blood is what allowed Eren to activate the Coordinate's power]]. It takes some time before Eren finally puts it all together.
* CheshireCatGrin: It never stops ''smiling'', and by God, is it creepy.
* ContrivedCoincidence: [[spoiler:The fact that it happens to end up killing and eating its former husband's second wife out of the literal ''thousands'' of other victims it could've come across certainly seems to count. However, this is turned on its head when Chapter 96 shows that it ''specifically ignored other humans'' and headed '''straight''' for Carla during the chaos. In the final chapter, Eren reveals that the him from the future specifically sent it after Carla to keep it from eating Bertolt]].
* CreepilyLongArms: Its arms are unnaturally long and skinny, compared to the rest of its body. Not as much as the Beast Titan's, though.
* DevouredByTheHorde: The first thing Eren does after awakening the Command ability is to sick a group of Titans on it.
* DissonantSerenity: Calm and smiling, even when brutally killing its victims.
* GlasgowGrin: A permanent one. Especially noticeable when it devours Carla Yeager.
* IronicDeath: DevouredByTheHorde of its fellow Titans after Eren's ability to command Titans awakens -- [[HoistByHisOwnPetard thanks to its own actions, no less.]]
* ItCanThink: Heavily implied. [[spoiler:After Bertolt successfully destroyed the gate to Shiganshina District and pulled himself out of the Colossal Titan, the Smiling Titan approached Bertolt, made eye contact with him, and simply walked right past him through the hole in the Wall much to Bertolt's confusion]]. Increased intelligence may be a side effect of [[spoiler: being a royal pure titan.]]
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:Ends up being eaten alive by several other Titans. Under the command of the son of the mother it ate. And right after it killed Hannes too, which provoked Eren to unlock his Coordinate ability.]]
* LeanAndMean: It's 14-15 meters tall and noticeable skinnier than [[FatBastard most Titans.]]
* LongNeck: It has an unusually long and thin neck.
* MissedHimByThatMuch: It had two distinct opportunities to turn back to its original human form. During the Fall of Shinganshina, [[spoiler:it purposely ignored Bertolt in human form to enter the town]]; years after (but in an earlier chapter), it almost got Eren Yeager during the Clash of the Titans arc until the young man used the Coordinate to swarm it with Titans who ended its life for good.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Many, many more than an ordinary human.
* MorphicResonance: Although its face could ''hardly'' be said to resemble [[spoiler:Dina's]], [[spoiler:it had her hairstyle and her petite frame as a human was exaggerated into a noticeably emaciated Titan]].
* NeckSnap: It does this to Carla before consuming her. Notable in that no other Mindless Titan has been seen deliberately using its hands to kill a victim.
* NightmareFace: Many Titans have it, but this one particularly stands out.
* ScaryTeeth: Shown off to great effect by its enormous grin.
* SlasherSmile: Its default expression is a grotesque grin exposing dozens of TombstoneTeeth.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Eren first activated the Coordinate in order to kill it. [[spoiler:He later realized that Dina's royal bloodline briefly granted him access to its power when he punched her hand, meaning he could potentially use Historia to control it.]]
* TombstoneTeeth: Its teeth are uniformly rectangular in shape, adding to the creepiness of its permanent SlasherSmile.
* TragicMonster: [[spoiler:Not only was she transformed into a Titan as punishment, but her final thoughts were a promise to find Grisha again. Those words of love seem to have lingered as an unconscious urge, causing her to pursue the Yeager family]].
* TragicVillain: [[spoiler: Upon learning that the Smiling Titan is Dina and the circumstances behind her transformation, Eren can't help but feel grief.]]
* YouKilledMyFather: Eren and Mikasa are shocked to see it again, and though desperate to kill it, both are too injured to do so themselves.

A 6 meter abnormal Titan encountered by Ilse Langnar that displays numerous unusual behaviors and the ability to briefly speak.
----
* BrokenTears: It begins to moan, weep, and then try to claw its own eyes out.
* CallForward: In Chapter 89, [[spoiler:she is shown to have been part of a cult that worshiped Ymir from the 104th, which was found out by the Marleyan authorities some sixty years before the Fall of Wall Maria, and Titanized as a punishment to roam the island of Paradis]].
* CradlingYourKill: After biting Ilse's head off, it cradles her corpse and then tenderly places it into a StalkerShrine.
* DeathByAdaptation: Levi kills it in the anime while its fate was left unknown in the manga up until [[spoiler:the Titan Guillotine was used to clear Paradis Island of all Titans, where it certainly would have died then]].
* EyeScream: Claws viciously at its face, ripping apart its lower eyelids and nearly tearing its own eyes out.
* FirstContact: Ilse attempts to communicate with it. It ends about as well as expected.
* HulkSpeak: Ilse is shocked when it displays the ability to utter a few words.
* IdenticalStranger: It mistakes Ilse for [[spoiler:Ymir]], causing it to hesitate before killing her.
* InfallibleBabble: Its rambling turns out to be very significant.
* MyGreatestFailure: It is shown to be in considerable anguish over his killing of Ilse Langnar, which was mostly fueled over its erroneous expectation of her being [[spoiler:Ymir from the 104th, a person she was misled to believe was the "messiah" out of, and the very reason she and the cult were Titanized by the Marleyans]].
* InnocentBlueEyes: In the anime; it may be a sign [[spoiler:that she has some degree of consciousness left.]]
* SanitySlippage: It displays many bizarre behaviors, including distress and confusion, as well as clawing at its own eyes and beating its head against a tree trunk when it encounters humans.
* SamusIsAGirl: [[spoiler:This Titan is the female cult member that was turned into a Titan before the 104th Ymir]].
* StalkerShrine: It tenderly places Ilse's headless corpse in a hollowed-out section of a tree, posing it in a seated position much like the bodies of religious figures are presented in some cultures. When distressed, it flees to the tree and begins to bash its head against the trunk.

----
* AndIMustScream: Completely incapable of movement and at least ''somewhat'' aware of its surroundings.
* BodyHorror: It has a massive body and tiny, shriveled limbs incapable of movement.
* HulkSpeak: It briefly speaks to Connie, much to his horror. [[spoiler:"Welcome home", indeed.]]
* MorphicResonance: Solidified when [[spoiler:Hange holds up a picture of Connie's parents next to it]], emphasizing how much it looks like [[spoiler:Mrs. Springer]].
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: The Titan is noted for its uncharacteristic calmness and overall lack of aggressive behavior; it's also capable of rudimentary speech. This earns it special attention from the Survey Corps.
* PutOnABus: It hasn't made an appearance since the Survey Corps took it into custody.
* TheBusCameBack: It finally makes another appearance following the initiation of [[spoiler: the Rumbling]], when Conny intends [[spoiler: to feed Falco to it, in order to turn his mother into a shifter.]]
* TragicMonster: [[spoiler:It was once Connie's mother, and still recognizes him enough to speak to him.]]
* TurningBackHuman: [[spoiler:[[ImpliedTrope Implied]]. Given the possibility that she eats a Titan Shifter, she might turn back into a human. Regardless, she might not be able to be of use like other Shifters, as there's also the chance that her Titan remains "crippled" just like the original before. However with the end of the series and the end of Titans, Connie explicitly notes that this trope has ended up happening after all]].
* WalkingSpoiler: Her existence leads to the main characters figuring out one of the most horrifying and terrible discoveries about the Titans.
* WasOnceAMan: Confirmed to have once been [[spoiler:Mrs. Springer, and there's enough left of her to recognize her son and greet him]]. This leaves utterly horrifying implications about the other Titans the Survey Corps had been fighting up until then.
* WhatHappenedToMommy: [[spoiler:Subverted. Her Titan form is crippled and relatively passive, making containment a simple matter. She's taken into custody by the Survey Corps, with Connie even expressing that besides the portrait of his parents, she's the only thing he has left.]]

!!Wall Titans
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_wall_titans.png]]

A mysterious group of Titans found to be the support structure of the Walls. Their existence becomes known when the Female Titan, in its attempt to escape from Eren and the Survey Corps, breaks a portion of Wall Sina at Stohess District and exposes the face of one of them.
----
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Whether they are or aren't humans transformed into Titans or artificial creatures is never quite specified. Nick seems to believe that were one of them to accidentally awaken, they would cause chaos within the walls, suggesting they might have the instincts of a "pure" Titan. On the other hand, they do not regain a human form when [[spoiler:the power of the Titan is taken away from the world]], suggesting that like Eren's legion of inheritors, they are simply extensions of the Founding Titan's body. Except they survived the Founder's power being passed down through over a century without dying, so [[WildMassGuessing at this point, who knows]].
* AmbiguousSyntax: The future envisioned by the First King states that he wanted a world where Titans ruled over humanity; indeed, these Titans inside the Walls are "ruling" over humanity by keeping it confined, though the Will of the First King might apply farther beyond this. They also rule over [[spoiler:humanity outside of the Walls, who live in constant fear of the King's threat to activate the Rumbling if provoked, though in actuality he has no intention of making good on that threat]].
* AndIMustScream: They've been entombed within the Walls for at least a century, and they are still ''alive''. It's unclear whether they are even aware of their surroundings.
* ApocalypseHow: If they would awoke, they would cause a ApocalypseHow/Class4 (or even possibly a ApocalypseHow/Class5) Apocalypse.
* AwakenTheSleepingGiant: The Marley government is well aware that things will be bad for them if they (literally) do this, so their goals have to be completed without open warfare.
* BlessedWithSuck: As Hange speculates, the walls might have been erected from their "Harden" ability; if so, they might have been manipulated to do so with the "Coordinate" by the First King.
* ChekhovsGun: Invoked. Their very existence implies that at some point the Three Walls will crumble and they will be free to destroy everything in their path. Both the Reiss family and the Marley Government are trying to conduct their business in a way that ensures this very thing doesn't happen. [[spoiler:It finally happens in Chapter 123.]]
* DegradedBoss: The Wall titans are basically all weaker, slightly shorter clones of the Colossus Titan, having a similarly huge stature (50m as opposed to the 60m of the Colossus) and the ability to emit searing hot steam to boil attackers alive, but cannot perform the explosive transformation. The difference however is that there's an ''army'' of them instead of just one Colossus Titan.
* DoomsdayClock: An in-universe example. The efforts of both the Monarchs and Nobility inside the Three Walls, and the Marley government is to proceed with their operations without eliciting the awakening of these Titans; thus, the status-quo has been maintained under this threat. The closest this came into fruition[[note]]according to fan speculation[[/note]] was when Grisha Yeager ate the Reiss family, who were focally gathered in a ceremony presumably to awaken these Titans shortly after the fall of Wall Maria. However, the validity of the First King's initial threat is put into question in further chapters by Eren Kruger (see DontMakeMeDestroyYou at the "First King" section on this page).
** It's later revealed that due to the failure of the "Warrior" Program at Paradis, the general consensus in the Kingdom of Marley is that it's only a matter of time that the Paradian Eldians ''will'' unleash the Wall Titans to decimate humanity and that it is a given. [[spoiler:They're right.]]
* EyeAwaken: Mikasa realizes one is still alive when it looks at her.
* FacialHorror:
** The one we see appears to be completely skinless, much like the Colossal Titan.
** [[spoiler: Once they all awake, we get to see a much larger variety of faces. All of them are completely skinless, but some lack facial muscles to the point that their faces resemble a ''skull'' from far away.]]
* FasterThanTheyLook: [[spoiler:In Chapter 128, Hange notices the trail of steam in the ocean they left behind and deduces that they already reached the part of Marley closest to Paradis Island and concludes that the rest of world will quickly follow unless Eren can somehow be stopped. According to Hange, the Wall Titans are faster than horses and and can destroy an entire continent in approximately four days.]]
* ForbiddenChekhovsGun: Unleashing the Titans would mean Apocalypse. Karl Fritz himself took great pains to forbid anyone from activating the Rumbling by instituting the vow of renouncing war. This vow would restrict his successors from the royal bloodline from ever using the Founding Titan to its full potential. [[spoiler:However, Eren successfully removes the vow and bloodline restrictions from the Founding Titan and awakens the Wall Titans.]]
* ForgottenSuperweapon: Chapter 86 revealed that their original purpose was to deter any attack by Marleyan forces, as the First King warned them that should they disturb the Eldian exiles, the Wall Titans will be awakened and lay waste upon the entire Earth.
* GiantEyeOfDoom: Though unfocused, it's looking right at Mikasa.
* HellIsThatNoise: [[spoiler:The Wall Titans do live up to their reputation. The rumbling caused from their tread is deafening and it is difficult to communicate when near them.]]
* InferredHolocaust: Assuming each Wall Titan is a former Eldian, and that there are millions of Titans forming the walls, then it can be inferred King Fritz sacrificed millions of his subjects for the Walls' construction. It's no wonder Eldians are a minority group a hundred years further on.
* TheJuggernaut: An army consisting of thousands of {{Giant Mook}}s, which can outpace galloping horses, cross seas and mountains within hours, and can emit huge clouds of steam while regenerating. No nation can withstand these walking skyscrapers of flesh.
* {{Kaiju}}: They are enormous compared to the average Titan, and they are in large numbers. When marching as one, the Wall Titans are an inexorable force.
* KrakenAndLeviathan: [[spoiler:The Wall Titans briefly invoke this trope when it is revealed they can swim very well underwater. When the Global Alliance fleet attempts to kill them via artillery barrage, the Titans quickly swim beneath the warships and sink the entire fleet within seconds.]]
* MeaningfulName: Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sina were named after [[spoiler:Ymir Fritz's three daughters]].
* AMillionIsAStatistic: The number of Titans embedded inside the Three Walls range between the hundreds of thousands (taking into consideration the territory area shown in the anime) to the millions. As the information is not discussed in the manga, the exact number is uncertain, but it's large enough to pose a serious threat to the existence of humanity regardless.
* MillionMookMarch: [[spoiler:Chapter 123, on Eren's command, '''''all''''' the Wall Titans from the three walls break free and begin their march to destroy the world outside of the island. [[HellIsThatNoise The din from the march is so immense that Mikasa and Armin can barely hear each other even though they are right next to each other.]] On Eren's orders, the Titans march day and night without a break. [[FasterThanTheyLook The Wall Titans cross the ocean and invade Marley in less than two days.]]]]
* MyBloodRunsHot: Like the original Colossus Titan power, the Wall Titans can also emit tremendous amounts of steam.
* NoSell: Artillery barrage cannot harm them at all.
* Really700YearsOld: Invoked. They've been embedded in the Walls for more than a century; assuming they were at the very least children at the time the Walls were erected, they are bordering the absolute maximum age for a human being's lifespan. In practical terms, they're the oldest Titan individuals currently known.
* ReinforceField: These Titans are what give the walls their durability.
* TheReveal: They are mindless Titans that resemble the Colossus Titan in size and appearance.
* RiddleForTheAges: Who were these titans before they were turned into the Wall Titans? Were they even human to begin with? These questions remain unanswered over the course of the story.
* ScaryTeeth: Like the Colossal Titan, it has no lips to cover its enormous teeth.
* SealedEvilInACan: Sealed within the Walls, they prevent forces from beyond them from openly invading, lest they be set loose and crush their opposition.
* SwordOfDamocles: The reason they're in the Walls is to keep the Marley government from making any wrong moves against the people in the Walls for fear of them being released and overrunning the Earth.
* WalkingSpoiler: Their very existence hints at a much bigger conspiracy within the Walls than a war with the Titans from outside the Walls. And that's just the beginning of it.
* WalkingWasteland: A literal example. Just marching forward destroys everything in their path; person or buildings. [[spoiler:The aftermath can be seen in chapter 131. A once sprawling town has been reduced to dust under the Titans' feet leaving only a few chunks of buildings as proof that a town once stood there.]]
* WhamShot: Chapter 122, [[spoiler:all the wall Titans finally awaken!]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: [[spoiler:In the final chapter, the curse of the Titans is undone, turning every Eldian who was titanized at Fort Salta into humans. However, we do not see if this is the case for the Wall Titans.]]
* ZergRush: If the Marley government makes a bad move, the sheer numbers of Wall Titans will stomp the Earth flat.

!! Rod Reiss' Titan Form / The Combat Titan
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rods_titan_crawls_towards_orvud.png]]

After Historia refused to turn into a Titan, Rodd Reiss licked the spilled Titan formula and transformed into a gargantuan Titan who almost immediately departs for Orvud District of Wall Sina.
----
* AllForNothing: The entire point of Rod transforming into a Titan was to devour Eren to get his Coordinate ability. Instead, after turning into a Titan, he completely ignores Eren in favor of the massive population of Wall Shina's Orvud District.
* AmbiguousSyntax: It's unclear whether the "Combat Titan" was one of the Nine Titan Powers created by Ymir Fritz, though it's implied that it isn't, as seven of the Nine are in possession of the Marleyans, with one of those seven not having been revealed yet.
** As of Chapter 95, all of the Nine have been revealed, confirming that Rod's Titan wasn't one of the Nine.
** However, it isn't clear ''why'' exactly Rod's serum was labeled as the "Combat Titan". It's possible that it was either a specialized titan serum that made it so that the one transformed into a titan much larger than average, or it was spinal fluid directly from a Founding Titan user. Either way, we never get an answer.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: It looks like a maggot. The human it used to be was a spineless coward who took advantage of his own daughter’s desperate hunger for genuine love, and tried to manipulate her into killing one of her few friends so she’d inherit a power she didn’t even want. He also spent the last moments of his humanity incapable of doing anything but crawling on the ground and feeding off it like the worm he was. Of ''course'' it looks like a maggot.
* AwesomeButImpractical: It's twice as large as the Colossal Titan. But due to the incomplete process of consuming the Titan serum, he ends up having disproportionally small legs. Combine that with his massive size, it means that he moves very slowly, dragging himself across the ground. By the time he reaches Wall Sina, his entire front has been ground away.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: The cover of the Special Edition of Volume 16 shows his face, revealing he has orange irises, glowing yellow pupils, and red-tinted black sclera. The anime averts this by giving him Rod's blue eyes.
* BodyHorror: He's been dragging his massive body, with its head scraping against the ground, across such a large distance without stopping that his entire face and torso have been ''ground away'' to the point that when he gets out of his crawling position and leaning up on Wall Sina, it's revealed that his entire upper body is split open, baring disproportionately sized internal organs for all to see. He's blown up before he can fully regenerate.
** Even WITHOUT the damage done to it, it’s still a highly deformed fatass of a creature that somehow manages to look muscular, emaciated, and morbidly obese all at the same time, with disproportionately narrow and long arms, legs bent and twisted up like an animal’s, a maggot-like and abnormally long body that stretches out like an accordion when it moves, a spine and ribs clearly visible through scorched flesh, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking a particularly unsightly ass]]. Even by the standards of ''Attack on Titan'', it takes a ''lot'' of resistance to nausea to look at this thing.

* BizarreAlienBiology: To other Titans, anyway. Despite Titans having vestigial digestive systems that end at a nonfunctional stomach, Rod's Titan form has a complete intestinal tract, gallbladder and liver. This is presumably because Rod wasn't injected with the Titan formula, but rather licked a bit of it off the ground.
* ClippedWingAngel: As noted above, while his size is impressive, the incomplete process of consuming the Titan serum gave him disproportionally small legs, forcing him to drag himself across the ground. His slowness ultimately turns out to be a disadventage too important and allows the humans to plan an effective counterattack.
* CollapsingCeilingBoss: The growth of Rod's Titan causes the chamber everyone was in to collapse, and Eren's new hardened Titan form is utilized to protect them.
* ContrivedCoincidence: As the military intends for Historia to be crowned Queen, she argues that she should get credit for killing the Titan regardless of who actually does it in order to attain credibility for the cause, getting the OK from Erwin. However, ''she does end up killing him herself anyway'' when the small chunk of meat containing Rod Reiss comes her way. Even Erwin is surprised at how incredibly unlikely that was.
* DeathGlare: During the entirety of the duration for its crawl toward Orvud, Rod's Titan maintained an utterly murderous glare in its eyes. It only lasted for as long as it still had them, that is.
* TheFaceless: Of a sort. Due to the fact that [[FacialHorror Rod has been dragging his face on the ground all night]], we never get to see what his titanized face looks like. In the Anime, the clearest shot we get is his eyes, with the rest of his face being in shadow when it should be visible.
* FacialHorror: After crawling for kilometers with its face scrapping the ground, when it finally rears its body we see that almost half of his head is missing, the anime even shows a more lovely detailed view of all the exposed layers of flesh, teeth, jaw bone, skull bone and brain matter.
* FeedItABomb: This is the key to his defeat. The slow progress towards Orvud District gives the human forces plenty of time to assemble a truly massive amount of explosives, big enough that Eren's Titan form is needed to carry it. When Rod's Titan pulls itself up against the Wall, the "Rogue" Titan runs up to it, shoves the whole thing in its mouth, and blows up what was left of its head. This creates an opening for Historia to slash his human body apart. Really, it's not that dissimilar from a [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda certain titanic fiery monster that fames the trope.]]
* GodzillaThreshold:
** Rod Reiss is forced to become a Titan because Historia refuses to do so, and the Coordinate ability ''has'' to return to the Reiss family regardless; aside from Historia, there's just no one else but him. However, his lack of understanding of Titanization leads him to overshoot the transformation so much that he effectively becomes ''the largest Titan known'', and even worse, the Titan becomes so irrational that it doesn't even seek Eren to regain the Coordinate. It forces the Survey Corps to use the entire population of the Orvud District as bait for it, and they use Eren's Attack Titan to jam enough explosives in its mouth to blow up a mountain.
** It's further implied that if he had intended the Titan to be that large indeed, he might have been accounting for it not to be overpowered by any other Titan Shifter like Frieda had, so that a Titanized Historia didn't lose the Coordinate had she faced similar circumstances.
* HellIsThatNoise: Most Titans have roars that sound like ''roars''. The sound that comes out of ''this'' thing is a gurgling snarl laced with pure hatred.
* InstantDeathRadius: His insane body heat sets everything around him ablaze.
* TheJuggernaut: Nothing so much as hinders his progress to Orvud District. The humans only manage to defeat him because he moves extremely slowly, leaving them plenty of time to elaborate a plan.
* {{Kaiju}}: When sitting up, he is over twice as tall as the Colossal Titan, making him the largest Titan ever encountered [[spoiler:at that point of the manga.]] Had he stood up completely, he'd be over ''three'' times as tall. And had the Titan Serum been injected properly, his limbs would have been better proportioned, making him ''even taller!''
* KarmicDeath: Rod is finally killed by none other than his daughter Historia, the very person he tried to Titanize for his own gain, after his head and torso are blown to chunks by the Survey Corps. Historia just happened to slice the slab of meat containing Rod's human form coming her way. Historia is even surprised with the incredible serendipity of the whole situation because she had just asked Erwin to receive credit for the kill regardless of who did it as a way to gain political points on the general population.
* RunningOnAllFours: His legs are so disproportionately tiny compared to his body that all he can do to get around is crawl like a maggot.
* TopHeavyGuy: His legs -- and his head and arms, for that matter -- are puny compared to his massive body.
* ThroatLight: On the cover of the Volume 16 Special Edition, he has a yellow-white glow shining out of his mouth.
* WalkingSpoiler: Rod Reiss is a central character in the Wall conspiracy, and this Titan form is the result of a plot twist where his plan gets rejected by his daughter.
* WreathedInFlames: His body is so hot he's practically on fire.

->'''Pieck''': I've figured out what we're dealing with. They're... [[WhamLine the past generations of the Nine Titans]]. Who knows if their minds are still in there, though.

During the Battle of Heaven and Earth, the Founder Ymir summons a legion of Titans to protect Eren and the Rumbling from the rebel forces from Paradis Island. Initially mistaken for Pure Titans, Pieck confirms that they are in fact the past generations of the Nine Titans.

----
* AirJousting: At one point, Levi ''fences'' a Jaw Titan mid-air, blocking the latter's claws with his swords.
* BackFromTheDead: All of them were holders of one of the Nine at some point in time and either died naturally or were consumed by their successors. Ymir brings them back from the dead for one last time.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: All of them are under the control of the Founder Ymir, even Titan Shifters who were friends and allies of the Alliance.
* CastOfSnowflakes: Each past inheritor has a unique design. Between different heads, jaws, armor designs, Warhammer flaps, they manage to be very distinct. Some, like the flayed Female Titan, the Okapi-headed Cart Titan, the caped Warhammer Titan and the various non-ape Beast Titans manage to pretty much steal the spotlight with design alone.
* ConservationOfNinjutsu: Downplayed and justified. The Alliance are repeatedly overwhelmed by the Inheritors at several points, but they ultimately manage to win the battle with no causalities. This is due to the Inheritors not being as strong or intelligent as they were in life, as well as Zeke and Armin awakening the Titan Shifters with the closest connection to the Alliance and having them assist.
** Some Armored Titans go down with a ''single'' thunder spear, whereas Reiner could tank up to a dozen previously.
* DeliberatelyMonochrome: They all share the color scheme of the War Hammer Titan, which is implied to be a result of them being War Hammer constructs themselves. However, unlike the War Hammer Titan, even their flesh is a sickly grey (despite them bleeding red).
* FightingFromTheInside: Zeke and Armin manage to awaken the souls of the Inheritors they knew in life inside the Paths, letting them take control of their bodies and join their side of the fight.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: While they are more coordinated than the regular Pure Titan, they are still borderline mindless and thus do not use the full extent of their Titan abilities. In the case of the Colossal Titan, only one (Bertolt) is summoned, only partially and not using the steam ability, though this may be due to the fact that the full weight of the Colossal Titan could rupture or destroy the Final Titan.
* TheHorde: An endless wave of resurrected Titan Shifters.
* MindControlEyes: Their eyes are pupil-less and covered in shadow, indicating that they are not in control.
* MirrorMatch: The most common Titan Shifters in this army are the previous wielders of the Armored, Female, and Cart Titans, whose current inheritors happen to be part of the group aiming to stop the Rumbling.
* MouthOfSauron: Though the Alliance initially believes they are created by Eren, Armin realizes in the Paths that the resurrected Titans are acting upon Ymir's will.
* MultiMookMelee: Since Eren's Founding Titan is too big to be fought normally, the army of inheritors serves as the PreFinalBoss.
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: Unlike other Intelligent Titans, they are not actually in the nape, but are simply constructed bodies being piloted by a "sleeping" consciousness from the Paths. Despite this, the nape is still their weak spot.
* PreFinalBoss: The inheritors serve as this to Eren and the worm.
* RespawningEnemies: They're endlessly made from the Founder's body. Pieck notes that even if she can regain her form a hundred times, it would do her no good against thousands.
* ResurrectedForAJob: Previous Titan Shifters who are brought back to defend Eren Yeager from attackers.
* ShoutOut: With the Source of All Life seemingly being one to Niddhógr from the Norse mythology, the resurrected inheritors are likely this to Ragnarok itself. In Ragnarok, all warriors who had died return for the final battle at the end of the world, much like the inheritors.
* ViewerSpeciesConfusion: InUniverse example; Mikasa, not knowing what an okapi is, can't tell if the okapi titan that kidnaps Armin is a Beast, Jaw, or Cart Titan.
* ZergRush: Their most common tactic is to swarm their enemies, albeit more coordinated than most examples.

The Devil of All Earth, (AKA, The Devil of the Earth) is a mythological figure related to the history of the Eldians, considered to be the being that imbued the Power of the Titans into Ymir Fritz some 1800 years before the Fall of Wall Maria. According to Marleyan history revisionism, it was slain by the hero Helos. It purportedly caused the events of the series by giving Ymir her Titan powers, which turned her into the mother of the Titans.
----

* BlessedWithSuck: Invoked. Having been given powers by the Devil does not speak good things about the whole deal, so it might not be that the Eldians were given the Titan Powers, rather than those were ''inflicted'' upon them. Considering that there's a 99% chance of an Eldian ending up as a Mindless Titan instead of a Shifter, if said Eldian is turned into a Titan, that's a rather crappy "power" to be given, as only 9 out of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of possible Eldian Titans, become Shifters, and even if you get to be a Shifter, you only have 13 years to live.
* CompositeCharacter: Turns out that [[spoiler:it never existed in this form. The power was given to Ymir by a force inside the giant tree and the part of making Ymir the mother of all Titans is fulfilled by the King Fritz of her time; so the "devil" depiction covers both of them.]]
* DealWithTheDevil: It's said that it made a deal with Ymir Fritz that gave her the Power of the Titans.
* EarlyBirdCameo: It's shown in the second season ED of the anime.
* HumanAllAlong: It's {{implied}} that he may be partially based on [[spoiler:the ancestral King Fritz, who was effectively the progenitor Ymir's master, and who forced her into advancing the Eldian civilization, crushing the Marleyans, bearing his children, giving her life for him, force-feeding her mortal remains into their daughters, and ultimately conditioning her into ~2000 years of slavery.]]
* LostInTranslation: Its nature and its intentions, if any, are completely lost in time. There is even in-universe speculation dictating that it might have not existed in the first place. [[spoiler:Chapter 122 all but confirmed that the Devil never existed and was pure propaganda from the start since Ymir accidentally discovered the Titan powers as a child as speculated by Kruger]].
* MeaningfulName: The Devil of All Earth is the reason why the Marleyans refer to the Eldians as "Children of the Devil".
* MonsterProgenitor: It purportedly imbued Ymir Fritz with the Power of the Titans, Ymir herself being the progenitor of the Nine Titan Powers of the Eldians.
* MorphicResonance: In its appearance on Frieda's picture book, the Devil is reminiscent of the Attack Titan and the Jaws Titan. Whether this resemblance is coincidental remains to be seen.
* MysteriousPast: As stated in LostInTranslation, it's not quite known what actually gave Ymir her powers, as the Devil might be mythological in origin.
* TheRashomon: In the Marleyan history books, it's depicted as the Devil indeed; in the Eldian picture book, it's depicted as a hooded figure.
* WrittenByTheWinners: According to the Marleyans, the Marleyan hero Helos slew the Devil himself during the Great Titan War, though it's later shown that Helos is even more fictional than the Devil, as Helos was a fabrication concocted by the Tybur Family as a way to convince Marley that they had a greater part in the defeat of the King than they actually had.

[[folder:Mysterious Organism / "The source of all organic matter"]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/source_of_all_living_matter_anime.png]]

Approximately 2000 years before the events of the main story, Ymir Fritz was captured and enslaved by the ancient Eldian Empire when she was a child. One day, she took the blame for an escaped pig, and was taken to the forest to be hunted for sport as punishment. Desperate to hide from her pursuers, she finds an enormous tree with a large opening big enough for her to walk in. She loses her footing and falls into a pool of water. Just before she drowned, a creature of unknown origin attaches itself to Ymir's spine, transforming her into the very first Titan.
----
* AdaptationalExpansion: The origins of the creature are only alluded to in the manga as during Zeke's speech about the origin of life on Earth, we see the Hallucigenia organism this creature is partly based on. In the anime, during the same scene, we see the organism forming from the primordial sea, indicating that, if it’s not the source of all life, it is at the very least one of if not ''the'' first lifeform to come into existence.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Zeke theorized that this thing created the power of the titans (having a strong/giant/near indestructible body, regeneration and immortality via the paths) by Ymir's desperation to live when it found her dying.
* BigBadDuumvirate: [[spoiler: The creature shares the role of final antagonist with Eren Yeager. The final battle revolves around keeping the two of them from reuniting and completing the Rumbling.]]
* BizarreAlienBiology:
** It strongly resembles a central nervous system as found in humans, including branching fibers that in a human body would extend to the peripheral parts of the organism and a bulbous "head" where the brain stem is typically located and the brain itself connects.
** It also resembles the Cambrian seaworm genus ''[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallucigenia Hallucigenia]]'', a primordial species of worm from 500 million years ago. It is even sometimes called the "Spine-Worm".
* BizarreAlienReproduction: The power it granted Ymir was passed on to her children by eating her spinal fluid upon her death, the same place where it physically bonded with her. Only up to 9 individuals can carry the Titan's power at a given time, and if a carrier dies without their spinal fluid being eaten, that power ends up in a randomly selected newborn baby. [[spoiler: It then emerged from Eren's spine after he unlocked the powers of the Founding Titan every time he was fatally wounded. It's unclear if this is the exact same specimen as the one that merged with Ymir or a descendant of it, passed down through Founding Titan inheritors.]]
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: It is unknown if the creature has any form of higher intelligence. It seems to have no goal other than ensuring the survival of itself and its "host". In a way, though, this means its goals are similar, if not completely identical, to those of any life form on Earth, something that Zeke makes note of. The only thing that makes it stand out as an organism is the fact that its ability to survive, reproduce and adapt is, to put it mildly, ''lightyears'' beyond anything seen in any other species.
* ComboPlatterPowers: It has a connection to the Paths allowing it to transcend time and space. It can enlarge in size and change its shape. It is nigh-indestructible. It created the power of the Titans (possibly by psychically sensing Ymir's fear of death) and can release a gas that creates them. It can make organic beings (such as the tree it lived under) grow bigger and quite possibly has the ability to affect biology itself.
* ConditionalPowers: Ymir Fritz was bleeding when it found her, so all future inheritors of the Titan powers have to cut themselves to get their titans as well. Ymir Fritz died thirteen years after getting her powers, so the inheritors must also only live that long. Furthermore, it’s implied that Titans are driven to eat people because Fritz forced their daughters to cannibalize Ymir in an attempt to inherit her powers.
* EldritchAbomination: It is an organism of unknown origin that is possibly as old as life itself. It is the very source of the Power of the Titans, which it gave to Ymir Fritz when she happened upon it by attaching itself to her spine. It seems to be what is passed down to every user of the Founding Titan, and is where the godlike power is drawn from. It also has the ability to change its size and shape.
* GreaterScopeVillain: It is unclear if the organism had any malicious intentions in fusing with Ymir (it being implied that it simply wants to survive and multiply), but in the process, it created the power of the Titans and thus is responsible for 2,000 years of war, death, and suffering. [[spoiler:In chapter 138, it makes its first real antagonistic action by releasing a Titanization vapor to transform the non-Shifter and Ackerman Eldians at Fort Salta into Titans, in order to save itself from Reiner. All the while, Eren, having survived Armin's transformation, reforms into a new titan, and the two presumably attempt to recombine again to continue the Rumbling.]]
* MadeOfIron: [[spoiler: It survives getting blasted by the Colossal Titan's explosive transformation without any sign of physical harm.]]
* MakeMyMonsterGrow: Even before it bonded Ymir it, at the very least, had the ability to alter biological life to make it grow bigger, judging by the fact that the tree it lived under was absolutely gigantic when Ymir found it.
* MookMaker: [[spoiler:It can titanize nearby Eldians by releasing a gas similar to the type used on Rakago village.]]
* NoNameGiven: It is completely unknown whether it is known by any name or belongs to a known species.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler:In the epilogue, it is implied that the creature in some shape and form survived as part of Eren's decapitated head and took refuge in the tree he was buried under, as thousands of years later, after Shiganshina has been reclaimed by nature, the tree has grown to be identical to the tree that Ymir fell into.]]
* NoOntologicalInertia: [[spoiler:After it is killed, all Titans are reverted to normal humans, and no new Titans form.]]
* OccamsRazor: When Grisha and Kruger were discussing how Ymir Fritz came into possession of the Titan's power, Kruger divulges the rather anticlimactic theory that Ymir simply came across the "source of all organic matter" by accident. That's exactly what happened, though whether or not it is the "source" of organic matter is undisclosed.
* TheReveal: This is the ''true'' Devil of All Earth because it is the creature that gave Ymir her powers and brought the Titans into being. No one knows about it, no one has even seen it aside from Eren until others notice it [[spoiler:when it emerges from his body to try and keep it alive several times during the final arc]]. (It attached to Ymir with her back turned so she may never have learned what it looks like.)
* RiddleForTheAges: Where did it come from? How did it get there? How long was it waiting for in that spot for a host to come by? Is it an alien? Is it intelligent? How does it function biologically? No one knows and likely never will.
** [[AllThereInTheManual The "Currently Publicly Available Information" eyecatch offers a few theories]]; such as the creature being a pathogenic parasite or even a god that took pity on Ymir, but nothing concrete.
* ShoutOut: Going along with the many other references to Myth/NorseMythology throughout the series, this creature is almost certainly one to Níðhöggr, the ancient dragon that gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil and happens to play a major role in [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt Ragnarok]].
* SizeShifter: When initially seen in Ymir's backstory, it's not that much longer than Ymir's own spine. [[spoiler:When it appears in the present once Eren unlocks the full power of the Founding Titan, it extends itself all the way from his severed neck to his head to reattach it (and the distance between the two was longer than the fully-grown Eren himself from head to toe, much less his actual spine). And when it appears after Jean severs the Founding Titan's head with explosives, it's so huge that Reiner as the ''Armored Titan'' can wrestle with it on a scale that looks like a human struggling with some mutant python.]]
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Particularly in Ymir's backstory, but ultimately in the entire series. It appears in just a couple of panels, but its fusing with Ymir and the power it bestows upon her lead to the creation of all Titans and every known conflict in past and present resulting from it. [[spoiler:It's also the reason Eren even manages to initiate the Rumbling, as it reattaches his severed head to his body.]]
* TheSymbiote: After attaching itself to Ymir's spine, it gave her the Titan's power. [[spoiler:In Chapter 122, it acts as this to Eren, as upon becoming the holder of the Founding Titan in full, it acts as a surrogate spinal cord after his decapitation, actively trying to keep his body together.]]
* TimeAbyss: It is implied to be as old as life on Earth, and was able to survive for 2,000 years through Ymir Fritz and the holders of the Founding Titan.
* UltimateLifeForm: It displays many of the traits that Zeke associates with “life”. It changes its shape and form to adapt. It seeks out a host to multiply. It enhances any living being it touches, etc. Not to mention that it is near indestructible if not immortal.
* TheUnreveal: What it actually ''is'' and where it originated from, whether mythical, scientific, or alien of some sort, is never revealed. How and why it has the ability to turn humans into giant monsters is, similarly, never revealed. All we learn is that it existed for quite some time, it has the ability to transcend time and space, and it appears to be alive in some form.
