The eponymous character of ''A Certain Magical Index'' and the main female magic-oriented protagonist. Index was a member of [[ChurchMilitant Necessarius]], with 103,000 grimoires hardwired onto her memory due to both her PhotographicMemory and immunity to their maddening influence due to lacking the mana to power them. She's also known for her temper and attitude unbecoming of a nun, such as freeloading and gluttony. Much of her background is currently unknown due to periodic memory washes upon her.

-----
* AccidentalKiss: While trying to bite Touma, Index misses and kisses his cheek.
* ACupAngst: [[BerserkButton So long as you don't say it to her face]], although she later "improves", as [[http://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/images/a/a1/Index_v16_002-003.jpg an illustration for Volume 16 shows]].
* AdventureRebuff: She's always telling Touma not to fight because he's not a member of the Magic Side and he shouldn't concern himself with their problems. He never listens.
* TheArtifact: It seems that Kamachi didn't expect the series to become as popular as it did, so Index doesn't really have much to do with things as time goes on. For the first few novels efforts were made to keep her relevant, but eventually, he just gave up. She does play a part in WWIII, but after that, she only speaks a few times until NT 8.
* ArtifactOfDoom: Has 103,000 grimoires full of forbidden spells hardwired into her brain.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: When using the grimoires' information, such as in Season 1 Episode 23, where she [[spoiler:managed to hold her own against a golem with a few quick phrases and ''safety pins''. Had Touma not knocked out the caster, she would have ''won''.]] All this to a ThemeMusicPowerUp, too. And later in the novels, while using her Spell Intercept, [[spoiler:she hijacks Fuze=Kazakiri, canceling it and saving Last Order in the process during the attack by Vento of the Front in Academy City.]]
* BadassAdorable: She's short, childish, and wears a cute robe held together with safety clips and yet she can royally wreck a magician's day.
* BadassBookworm: [[spoiler:Stood up against a golem and many sorcerers using just mental codes.]]
* BatmanInMyBasement: For a while, Touma had her keep a low profile in his apartment to prevent her from being arrested or deported for not being an Academy City citizen. Once she gains citizenship, this is no longer an issue.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Touma.
* BerserkButton: Denying her access to food and mentioning her [[ACupAngst horizontally challenged figure]].
* BestFriendManual: Had to explain Touma's motivations and thought process to several girls so far and she was the only human to have him figured out without putting him on a [[IdealHero pedestal]] out until Thor appeared. Touma long since lost the ability to hide anything before her even on the phone.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: [[spoiler:Even Stiyl had to run from Index while on a rampage upon discovering Touma's memory loss.]]
* BigEater: To the point that she drains Touma's wallet with almost every meal. When Maika cooked for her, Index claimed it only filled one third of her stomach.
* BloodMagic: In order to heal herself, she used her blood as a catalyst for a healing spell.
%%* BlushSticker
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: After the events of Volume 18, Index is this until the end of Volume 22. [[spoiler:Fiamma of the Right]] gains control over John's Pen.
* BrownNote: When she uses "Spell Intercept Song" or "Sheol Fear".
* CannotSpitItOut: [[spoiler: Subverted, as of the end Episode 6 when she [[AnguishedDeclarationOfLove tearfully tells Touma she loves him]]. Too bad about the memory loss though...]]
* CharacterCatchphrase: The way she exclaims "Touma!" when she's annoyed followed by a "chomp" sound effect is pretty much her catchphrase it happens so often.
%%* CharacterMagneticTeam: With Touma.
* ChekhovsGun: Remember those safety pins that keep her habit together after Touma accidentally tore them off with his touch? Well, she used them against [[spoiler:Sherry's summoned Golem]] in Season 1 Episode 23.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Hates it when she sees Touma hanging out with other girls, particularly Mikoto.
* ClothingDamage: The Walking Church she wears is magically created... and Touma accidentally destroys it in the first episode to demonstrate [[AntiMagic the Imagine Breaker]]. HilarityEnsues.
* CodeName: Her magic name, "[=Dedicatus545=]."
* ContraltoOfStrength: John's Pen Mode drops her voice to a CreepyMonotone and shows just how dangerous those 103,000 grimoires are when put to use.
* CoolSword: The [[FamedInStory Sword of God Frey]], which can ''fight on its own''.
* {{Cosplay}}: Seen in Season 1 Episode 22 cosplaying as "[[MagicalGirl Magical Powered Kanamin]]".
* CreepyMonotone: In John's Pen mode, her voice loses all emotion and makes her sound like a computer.
* CuteLittleFangs: Often shown when she's about to bite Touma.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: Creator/YukaIguchi sings the ''Railgun'' ending themes and a theme from the ''Miracle of Endymion'' movie.
* DramaPreservingHandicap: Index's "Walking Church" robe provides her with amazing defenses... which Touma inadvertently destroys in Season 1 Episode 1 to prove the existence of "Imagine Breaker". Index patches it back together, but it's lost its powers. [[CallBack This comes back a few times]], as the few people who do directly attack her still believe that her enchantment is intact, meaning attacks she could easily shrug can become fatal. This is especially bad, considering that most people want Index for her knowledge, and killing her isn't exactly what they want to happen.
* EnergyWeapon: Her "Dragon's Breath" and "Eli Eli Lama Sabachtani" spells.
* FailedASpotCheck: Although she is normally very observant and remembers everything she sees, she reveals in New Testament SS that she had no idea what Touma's address is. When Maika incredulously points out she lives with him, Index says she never saw it.
* FanservicePack
-->"A tub of Musashino Milk a day keeps the flat chest away!!"
* FishOutOfWater: She has no idea how the modern world works and is clueless about electronics.
* {{Flanderization}}: The anime adaptation exaggerates her 'biting Touma' and BigEater tendencies, making her come off as an abusive freeloader to Touma.
* FromRoommatesToRomance: At the beginning of the series, Touma saves Index from the fate of having her memories erased every year and she has been living with him ever since. She is in love with him, but it's unknown if he feels the same towards her.
%%* GenkiGirl:
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: When she's in John's Pen mode.
* GoingCommando: As {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d in the manga after Touma accidentally destroys her Walking Church.
-->'''Touma:''' "So... the English way of wearing a robe is such that the below (body) is not covered by any other clothes besides the robe itself. I didn't know that!"
* HeroicSafeMode: John's Pen mode, installed by the Archbishop on her as an insurance to keep the Index of Prohibited books under control.
* HoldingBackThePhlebotinum: Index has complete knowledge of ''all'' magic, but [[spoiler:she can also use them as well]]. To make sure she doesn't go [[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity crazy under their influence]], she [[spoiler:has her memories erased yearly and is told that [[RestrainingBolt she can't use magic]], though this is just a lie to keep her controlled. After Touma saves her, she is now free to use her spells as she pleases.]]
* HonorBeforeReason: In several arcs, she insists that taking on enemy mages is her responsibility and not Touma's, ignoring Touma's argument that she isn't really suited to fighting while he obviously is.
* HopelessWithTech: She starts out incapable of operating the simplest of devices, like vending machines with a touch screen. Hyouka Kazakiri comments that figuring out a touch screen should be fairly intuitive. She improves later after some tutoring from Kazakiri and Maika, as in the side story ''New Testament SS'', she's able to use a laptop and win online puzzles for money.
* HypocriticalHumor: She says she's a religious nun in training, but does things unbecoming of her station, such as freeloading, eating a lot, petty thievery, etc.
%%* {{Kawaiiko}}
* LivingMacGuffin: Essentially her role in the entire series, although it's not a major source of conflict until Volume 13, when Fiamma intended to capture her and use her knowledge to study [[spoiler:Touma's Imagine Breaker]] and how to use it with [[spoiler:The Holy Right.]]
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Touma usually leaves her at home while he has his adventures. She doesn't even know half of Touma's acquaintances, and thinks Accelerator is just a kind stranger who gave her food once.
* LuminescentBlush: Her whole body.
* MagicMusic: Can perform some spells by singing.
* ManBitesMan: She tends to bite Touma when she's mad at him. Her preferred target is his head, though particular fits of anger will leave his face and arms coated with bite marks.
* MsExposition: As she contains the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, she's usually the one to explain what to do when Touma is confronted with magical items.
* NaughtyNuns: More like Freeloader Nun.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: In the beginning of the series, Index was unconscious when Touma's brain was damaged and couldn't say anything to him before he lost all his memories.
* NunsAreFunny: Index is technically a nun, but passes off her very un-nun like behavior such as indulging in sweets as the result of her only being in training.
* OlderThanSheLooks: Index is around 14-15 years old, meaning that she could actually be older than Mikoto.
* OmniscientDatabase: A human version. However, her database has no references to Imagine Breaker; it makes no sense from a magical perspective.
* OutOfFocus: For an eponymous character, her screen-time and importance in many arcs of the series is pretty limited.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: [[spoiler:There's a reason she had her memories periodically erased.]]
* PhotographicMemory: Index is capable of perfectly memorizing anything, which is one of the reasons why she was chosen as the vessel for 103,000 grimoires.
* PowerGivesYouWings: [[spoiler:During Index's stay in St. George's Cathedral while she was being restrained by Stiyl Magnus, she grows crimson wings, which are said to be angelic wings. With them, she could dissipate Innocentius and blow his user away by just flapping them.]]
* PowerLimiter: The "collar" and the remote control spiritual item.
* PowerMakesYourVoiceDeep: Creator/MonicaRial makes good use of her broad vocal range. She uses her normal voice most of the time, but uses her "adult" one for John's Pen Mode.
* PlayfulCatSmile: She tends to use a cat smile while she's being mischievous or playful.
* PretentiousLatinMotto: "The devoted lamb protects the knowledge of the strong".
* PrettyFreeloader: Index lives at Touma's apartment, but she absolutely refuses to help with the housework. Her only "jobs" are to [[BigEater eat]], sleep, watch TV, and occasionally take care of Sphynx. This hits its boiling point in Volume 16 when Itsuwa starts cooking dinner and Touma, in a moment of inspiration, basically throws Index into the bathroom and tells her to clean it and be useful for once. She ends up pouring detergent into the bathtub heater and destroying the thing.
* RunningGag:
** She tends to bite Touma whenever he somehow pisses her off.
** [[BigEater She has a large appetite]], much to the chagrin of those who pay for her food, like [[spoiler:Accelerator.]]
** She tends to get hit by Touma whenever she's changing clothes or taking a bath. Even Index herself lampshades during the Daihaseisai:
---> '''Index:''' [[AccidentalPervert Touma?!]] How many times has it been?!\
'''Touma:''' Wahhh! I’m really sorry! [[RunningGag Please don't bite me again!]]
* {{Sleepwalking}}: Tends to attack Touma while she is asleep, which is why he sleeps in the bathtub.
* SpannerInTheWorks: A stray blast from her destroyed the Tree Diagram satellite, ruining Mikoto's plans to hack into it and causing a lot of problems down the road.
* TeenGenius: Very capable when it comes to magic.
* TranquilFury: [[spoiler:When she finds out the truth about Touma from Fiamma.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: She's rather vicious towards Touma, even when it's obvious that he means the world to her.
* WetwareBody: Index's body is possessed by an [=AI=] of sorts some of the time. It's pretty competent, really.
* {{Yandere}}: When she finds out about [[spoiler:Touma's memory loss]], she snaps into John's Pen mode.
* YouAreWorthHell: Touma says he's not stupid enough to condemn himself to Hell for anyone, but that she is worth [[ToHellAndBack coming to Hell to pull her out]].

Lola Stuart is the Archbishop of Necessarius and also of the English Anglican Church. Despite being the Archbishop, she looks like an eighteen-year-old girl with long blonde hair that's 2.5 times her height.
----
[[AC:Tropes that apply to Lola Stuart]]
* AmbiguouslyEvil: She's done just as many evil deeds as she has good ones. It's hard to say whether she's a good person, a bad one or simply a neutral one.
--> '''Stiyl''': ''"No one is better than her in manipulating human feelings, rationality, interests, ethics, and necessary values. The hidden dragon among sorcerers, she’s somehow able to get to the top, and it’s not done cheaply."''
** [[spoiler:It is later revealed that the reason she acted this way is because her contract limited her actions and so she had to be careful to balance them as to not make big waves or anything outside the bounds of her contract to ruin Aleister's life]].
* ArchEnemy: For Aleister, [[spoiler:especially when he believed that she possessed his daughter Lola]].
* BathingBeauty: Her favorite pastime is bathing, for which she has a ridiculous number of bathtubs, all located in the same room.
* BatmanGambit: She knows very well which strings she should pull to control her subordinates.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She may [[OlderThanTheyLook look like a sweet, innocent teenager]] but people have to remember that she's the Archbishop of Necessarius. She's not afraid to use the powers bestowed upon her to eliminate her enemies in whatever means, all while she's [[DissonantSerenity smiling at you]]. [[spoiler:She's also a ''literal'' demon]].
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Despite how childishly she acts, there's a reason she's the Archbishop.
* TheChessmaster: She's capable of regularly matching wits with and sometimes even out-maneuver Aleister Crowley. If that doesn't qualify you nothing will. [[spoiler:It makes sense, given their long history together]].
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Ditzy, somewhat absentminded, and goofy. They doesn't stop her from being an extraordinarily [[ManipulativeBastard cunning bitch]].
* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler:She claimed to be Lola Crowley possessed by the Great Demon Coronzon. However, that was a lie meant to trick Aleister into undoing the shackles Samuel Mathers placed on her]].
%%* DissonantSerenity
* DubNameChange: There's a bit of history around her name. In Japanese, she is ''Rōra Suchuāto''; the official English dub changed this to Laura Stuart, assuming that's what they meant, since "Lola" is a very rare name in English. However, the reveal that she's [[spoiler:[[https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/206060424/lola-zaza-hill Lola Zaza Crowley]], [[HistoricalDomainCharacter the real life daughter of Aleister Crowley]],]] throws a wrench into that assumption. And then it turns out that she's [[spoiler:actually the demon Coronzon, not even possessing Lola Crowley's body,]] making her "real" name even murkier.
* GivenNameReveal: [[spoiler:Her real name (or rather, the name of her [[DemonicPossession host body]]) is Lola Zaza ''Crowley'', Aleister's second daughter.]]
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: [[spoiler:Lola Zaza Crowley was Aleister's second daughter in real life, although they became estranged]].
* InconsistentSpelling: Her name was first translated as ''Laura'' Stuart. Only about a decade and 30 books later did fans figure out it was supposed to be Lola all along for TheReveal to make sense.
* ItAmusedMe: Likes to make fun of Aleister's failures, especially when the latter finds out about World Rejector.
* ManipulativeBastard: How magnificent is she? Let's start with the Book of Law incident.[[note]]First, she asks the Knights of England for help to rescue Orsola Aquinas from the Amakusa Catholics, Kaori Kanzaki's former group. The Knights, being prideful jerkasses (Necessarius and the Knights have a uneasy relationship) decide to rescue Orsola all by themselves and kill the Amakusas. Unfortunately, Kaori doesn't take this too kindly and beats the crap outta them. Later, Lola sends Stiyl, Touma and Index to help Agnese and her battle nuns rescue Orsola. But then it is revealed the battle nuns came to kill Orsola as she knows how decode the Book of Law, so we assume Lola wants Orsola because of that. However by the end of incident, it is revealed Lola wasn't after Orsola but the Amakusas themselves, who by now have joined Necessarius for protection for their actions against Agnese's nuns and the Roman Catholic Church. The reason? By having the Amakusas under her control, Lola makes sure that Kaori remains loyal to Necessarius and has incentive not to betray them. Another plus for her? Not only did she gain a skilled decoder (despite her not actually being able to decode the Book all along), she even humiliated the Knights and gained the favor of the Queen![[/note]]
** As Stiyl eloquently describes it: ''"...[[ThisIsForEmphasisBitch You bitch]]."''
* MyHovercraftIsFullOfEels: See RunningGag.
* OddFriendship: With Queen Elizard.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Her appearance hasn't changed that much since twenty years ago according to the Pope. [[spoiler:We later learn she has been the Anglican Archbishop since ''1909'']].
* RunningGag: Is only shown once in the anime, but in the novels, Lola would often have her serious conversations derailed by the person in question awkwardly asking her why her Japanese sounds so weird (all thanks to Tsuchimikado teaching her Japanese). In a very awkward moment, Aleister even offered to send a Japanese teacher to help her out.
-->'''Stiyl''': ''"...don’t tell me you used such a stupid way of speaking to negotiate with the representatives from Academy City." ''
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Will often jump into a bathtub while other people are in the room. Stiyl has gotten used to it.
** She also strips down in front of Hamazura.
* StuffBlowingUp: How she escapes being tied up in Windsor Castle. [[spoiler:This is due to her demonic nature as the embodiment of dispersion and natural breakdown]].
* {{Telepathy}}: She possesses charms which facilitate this effect.\
[[AC:Tropes that apply to Coronzon]]
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/coronzon.png]]
[[caption-width-right:300:[[labelnote:Click here to see her true form]]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/coronzon_hair.jpg[[/labelnote]]]]
[[caption-width-right:300:''"My numerical value is 333 and my nature is dispersion. I prevent the true bonding of all the world’s laws and I bring endless chaos and destruction. My name is Coronzon. Now learn firsthand just what that name means."'']]

Lola's true identity is Coronzon, a powerful demon on par with Aiwass, summoned as part of a demon's contract with Aleister's late enemy, Samuel [=McGregor=] Mathers, who ordered her to guide Aleister to ruin. She at first claims to be possessing Aleister's second daughter, Lola Zaza Crowley, before it is revealed to be a lie.
----
* AlwaysABiggerFish: ''Seems'' to be one for Aiwass, when before it seemed implied he was the strongest being in the franchise. "Seems" because when the two actually clash, [[spoiler:Aiwass despite his loss both wasn't using his full power and makes it clear he never intended to win the fight anyways.]]
* AlmightyIdiot: The writings of Aleister Crowley describe Coronzon as behaving chaotically, babbling nonsense, and having no true sense of self, but is also highly dangerous when summoned.
* AmbiguousGender: Generally referred to with female pronouns, Coronzon having created a female body for itself instead of possessing a woman. Most likely cannot be considered as actually having a gender.
* DemonicPossession: Her specialty. She can create hosts for herself as shown with Karasuma Fran. She says she is possessing Aleister's daughter before admitting she actually created a physical body for herself.
* DyingCurse: What Coronzon's function is, more or less, given that Mathers commanded her to ruin Aleister and died fighting him afterwards, so Coronzon's been picking up the slack for Mathers ever since.
* HumansAreInsects: Sees humans as no better than "hip-thrusting animals" compared to itself.
* IJustWantToBeFree: While she ''does'' seem to enjoy making Aleister suffer in the process, a big part of why she keeps antagonizing him is because she ''needs to'' in order to fulfill her contract with Mathers in order to be free of his service. Of course, that's also because she wants to be free to do whatever she wants on Earth without restraints [[spoiler:namely invoke a ceremony that would devastate the entire planet]].
* KickTheDog: Mathers commanded her to make Aleister suffer and guide him to ruin, so she decided the best way to do that to [[PapaWolf Aleister]] was to take his second daughter from him. Or rather, lie to him about that to drive him to despair and attempt to kill him so he dies believing his daughter hate him.
* MeaningfulRename: Coronzon took the name "Lola Stuart" from both Lola Crowley's first name and [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Stuart The House of Stuart]], a dynasty that Samuel Liddell [=MacGregor=] Mathers wished to restore. Considering the fact that Mathers and Aleister became enemies and Corozon was summoned by Mathers to be loyal to him, Coronzon did this seemingly to [[KickTheDog rub it into Crowley's face]].
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: She's not a demon in the traditional sense of hell spawn, notably because she is not from the Qliphoth, the demonic tree of evil in Kabbalah, but guards the Sephiroth, the angelic tree of good. She's even called an "angel", the angel of the tenth Aethyr Zax. So she's more of a supernatural creature of boundless power and age that mortals cannot truly grasp.
* PhysicalGod: Coronzon is one of the strongest being in the To Aru universe from what we saw so far.
* PublicDomainCharacter: Coronzon was a demon first described in the writings of the 16th-century occultists Edward Kelley and John Dee, before later showing up in Crowley's as "Choronzon" and one he attempts to summon.
* TimeAbyss: Implied, although her true age is never given.
* WalkingSpoiler: Talking about Coronzon will eventually reveal its connection to Aleister and their history.

A sorcerer from Necessarius. His sorcery name is [=Fortis931=]. He’s an extremely heavy smoker, and claims a world without nicotine would be hell. He specializes in using runes to invoke his power over fire. He has a short temper but is actually very kind, as he cares about Index very much and used to travel around the world by her side when she copied the original grimoires into her mind. His failure to save her life without taking away her memories is his greatest regret.
-----
* BarcodeTattoo: Under the right eye.
* BadassLongcoat: He wears black robes.
* BodyguardCrush: To Index.
* CodeName: Magic Name: [=Fortis931=].
* ConvectionSchmonvection: He claims that his flame swords reach temperatures of 3000 degrees Celsius (the heat released by a space rocket's thrusters on take off), but they never actually burn anything unless they touch the object in question.
* DemotedToExtra: Was originally one of the most active characters in the series, but hasn't done much since Volume 10.
%%* {{Determinator}}
* FlamingSword: Both he and Innocentius wield one made of pure flames.
* GeometricMagic: His magic makes use of runes that he prints on cards, and seemingly, at least for the stronger spells, requires a subject to be within the range of said cards.
%%* HiddenHeartOfGold
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Says the only reason why he tolerates Touma is because Index loves him.
%%* JerkWithAHeartOfGold
* LogicalWeakness: To operate Innocentius, Stiyl scatters photos of runes throughout Touma's apartment building. After verifying the location of papers, Touma sets off the fire alarm's sprinkles, which ruins the ink and renders Stiyl defenseless. From there on Stiyl uses water-proof paper and places runes on a wider radius.
* MagnusMeansMage: Magnus is a meaningful name for a sorcerer.
* MasterOfIllusion: He does it more often in the light novels, but he can create illusions based on the principle that heat makes mirages.
* PlayingWithFire: His magic is fire-based. His most iconic spell summons a fire demon called Innocentius composed of 3000°C flames.
* PostModernMagik: Mass produces the runes needed for his spells with a photocopier. He later laminates his rune cards so that they can't be washed away with water.
* PretentiousLatinMotto: "I prove why my name is the strongest here".
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: While he's seemingly immune to his own fire, he's not immune to fires he didn't create.
* ShipTease: With Komoe-sensei of all people in the SP volume.
* SmokingIsCool: He even says a world without nicotine would be hell.
* StarterVillain: Stiyl is the first opponent Touma goes against after meeting Index, and one of the easiest.
* SquishyWizard: With his flame spells and summoning he can wreak some serious damage. In spite of this, he gets taken down pretty easily and finds himself at a disadvantage in physical confrontations. Touma knocks him out with a single punch on numerous occasions.
* TeenGenius: He appears to be very knowledgeable about magic in general, is quite a powerful sorcerer for his age, and despite being born in England, has a firm grasp on the Japanese language. That being said, he's rather ignorant about science and other, more mundane subjects.
* TheWorfEffect: Moreso in the novels and side stories than in the anime, but still very prominent.
* {{Tsundere}}: He says this to Touma: "It's not like I want to be friends with you." While peeling him an apple.
%%* WellIntentionedExtremist
* VitriolicBestBuds: Despite constant insistence that he doesn't like Touma, they ''do'' seem to hang out a lot.
* WeHaveWaysOfMakingYouTalk: Threatens [[spoiler:Biagio and Ridovia]] with this while in the London Tower's prison chambers.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: You wouldn't know from his height, mannerisms or smoking habit, but he's only ''fourteen''. In other words, Stiyl is actually younger than Touma and around the same age as Index. This is {{justified|Trope}} however, as the reason why he looks so old was due to a miscommunication between Kamachi and Haimura; Stiyl's first confrontation with Touma in Kamachi's notes was supposed to be something of an [[MagicVersusScience Old vs New]] (which Haimura literally took it as "[[LiteralMinded old man vs. young boy]]") disregarding that Stiyl is only ''14'', but Haimura still went with the character design since he believed that the [[ItWillNeverCatchOn novels would only run for so long]] until the series popularity forced him to look back on this choice as an OldShame. Other than that, there are also logical reasons InUniverse for Stiyl's appearance as he's ethnically Caucasian[[note]]making him appear taller to the Japanese cast as the average height for adult males is 5'7''[[/note]], and has had to endure numerous hardships in his line of work- especially the fact that his use of Innocentius is CastFromLifespan, leading to RapidAging.

An eighteen-year-old sorcerer from Necessarius. Unlike her partner Stiyl, she uses magic to strengthen her body. Her sorcery name is [=Salvare000=]. She uses a two-meter-long nodachi called "Seven Heavens Seven Swords" as her weapon, and she has a special attack called Nanasen (Seven Flashes) that uses her sword and thin steel wires. Not only is Kaori a skilled swordswoman, but she’s a Catholic Saint possessing the "Stigma," the ability to call upon God's power.
-----
* ActionGirl: Being a skilled swordswoman with the power of God on her side, she more than qualifies.
* AlliterativeName: '''K'''aori '''K'''anzaki
* BadassAdorable: She has her moments, usually when Touma manages to fluster her.
* BareMidriffsAreFeminine: She's an action girl who has the habit of wearing tops that leave her midriff bare.
* BatmanCanBreatheInSpace: During the ''Miracle of Endymion'' movie. She also doesn't seem to give a damn about falling back to Earth from orbit.
* {{BFS}}: Her sword "Shichiten Shichitou" (Seven Heavens, Seven Swords) is about two meters long.
* BigBreastPride: She's normally indifferent to her figure, if not embarrassed by Tsuchimikado's recommendations to appeal to Touma, but displays this in the Norse Mythology SS toward [[ACupAngst Birdway]] when the latter annoys her enough to start a bickering match.
* BornLucky: As a Saint, she has incredible luck, but she hates the fact that it doesn't protect the people around her.
* BornWinner: As a Saint, she was born with her power.
* BraidsOfAction: She has extremely long hair, but keeps it tied in a ponytail so it doesn't get it in the way when she fights.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She's very well endowed, which gets her the attention of guys like Touma. One promotional art even showed [[ACupAngst Mikoto being jealous of her figure]].
* CannotSpitItOut: Want to see her lose composure? Mention her crush on Touma and watch her turn into a stuttering mess.
* CantBatheWithoutAWeapon: She keeps her sword with her when she bathes. Touma and his father learn this the hard way.
* CodeName: Magic name: [=Salvare000=]
* CoolBigSis: She has a very reliable air about herself and often acts as a pillar of support for other members of the cast if they need it.
* {{Cosplay}}: Kaori likes to wear Angel-nurse and Angel-maid costumes and other variations of the formers.
* CurbStompCushion: [[spoiler:She ends up fighting Acqua of the Back at the height of his power in order to protect Touma from losing his right hand and/or life, and the Amakusas from losing all of ''their'' lives. While she's ultimately outmatched, she pushes him farther than any fighter before her.]]
* CursedWithAwesome: She's a Saint. She feels that this required too many sacrifices, in that others will suffer misfortune in place of herself no matter how hard she tries to fight to save them.
* DeathOfAThousandCuts: Her Nanasen (Seven Flashes) technique involves her splitting her seven steel wires into ''thousands'' at once to strike her foes from all directions. The other members of the Amakusa can perform it, but Kaori, thanks to her Saint powers, can split her wires far more than theirs.
* DefrostingIceQueen: She starts off being cold and standoffish due to her anguish at her inability to help Index. But becomes a friendlier person thanks to being affected by Touma's idealism.
* EveryJapaneseSwordIsAKatana: Technically it's a Nodachi.
* FashionableAsymmetry: She's actually [[InvokedTrope invoking]] this in order for her asymmetry balance magic to work, with the dark blue jeans she usually wears having the left pantleg cut off and her belt being loose only on the left side.
* GoingCommando: She ''never'' wears undergarments or socks under her clothes.
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: She keeps trying to tell [[TheGadfly Motoharu Tsuchimikado]] there's nothing between her and Touma. [[ShipperOnDeck Tsuchimikado]] is not convinced in the slightest and she really doesn't seem to be fully convinced herself.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Touma has the impression she's just a cold, selfish woman who doesn't care about Index when they first meet, without realizing her inability to help Index is part of the reason she's so emotionally closed off
%%* HonorBeforeReason
* HopelessWithTech: Like most magic users she's bad with technology, and it's a RunningGag that she is completely incapable of operating a washing machine, even with the instructions available.
* IaijutsuPractitioner: Her Yuisen (Single Flash) technique involves infusing her sword with magic before unsheathing it in a quick-draw that [[AllYourPowersCombined combines Shinto, Buddhist, and Christian spells together in such a manner to cover for each types' weaknesses]] that in theory it can only be stopped by an opponent capable of using all the same magic in response. Even an angel would be harmed by this technique. She also incorporates normal battoujutsu (the old name for iaijutsu) into her fighting style for non-magic attacks.
* AnIcePerson: She can cast ice magic with her wires.
* ItsAllMyFault: Due to being BornLucky, she has a tendency to blame herself for the misfortune of people around her. This is what led to her defecting from the Amakusa, as she thought she was bringing them down with her presence alone.
* ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies: Why she left the Amakusa, believing that without her they would be safer and wouldn't need to fear the powerful enemies seeking her out and being dragged into her fights. [[spoiler:During her fight with Acqua, however, she comes to realize that in her desire to "protect" them, she was also saying she didn't have any faith in their strength or conviction to stand by her]].
* KungFuJesus: As a Saint, she was born with a body possessing similar powers to Jesus himself.
* LadyOfWar: She is incredibly strong, skilled with the blade, and graceful in both conversation and battle.
* LetsGetDangerous: All magicians speak their code name before going all-out. Kaori almost never does, simply because she is so powerful she never needs to go all-out. Even against Touma, she refused to speak it. Therefore, it helps underline the seriousness of the situation when she's fighting [[spoiler:the angel of the Angel Fall arc]], and she starts the fight with her magic name, not even pausing to utter a warning first.
* LightningBruiser: Her supersonic speed is so stunning that Touma's reflexes can hardly keep track of her, she's more than strong enough to beat him into a pulp, and as shown during her fight with Acqua she can take blows capable of shattering massive stretches of concrete.
* LongHairIsFeminine: Her hair is so long that it falls to her waist even when she ties it up into a ponytail, fitting with her being a TomboyWithAGirlyStreak.
* MagicEnhancement: She specializes in using magic to magically strengthen her body and enhance her already impressive combat skills.
* MamaBear: Though she left her former comrades, the Amakusa Catholics, she still cares about them and will start a battle if they are in danger even if that means starting a war between churches. She’s also deeply worried about Touma, who solved her personal problems for her and made her a DefrostingIceQueen. When she learns Acqua of the Back has targeted the latter and beaten ''both'' parties to near death, it's one of the few times she loses it on a foe.
* MasterOfThreads: Her Nanasen technique uses seven wires that she can split into ''thousands'' to strike her enemy. Aside from that, she also uses her wires to form three-dimensional magic circles through which she casts magic.
* MasterSwordsman: She's an expert at the Amakusa's Style of sword fighting, being extremely skilled with her nodachi even when not infusing it with magic.
* MsFanservice: She's a pretty woman with a curvaceous figure that bares a lot of skin with her asymmetrical clothing. She also gets a few {{fanservice}} scenes, such as a bath scene with MaleGaze shots that ends with Touma [[ShowerOfAwkward walking in on her naked]] with a gratuitous ToplessnessFromTheBack & {{Sideboob}} shot.
* MyGreatestFailure:
** She views her brutal beatdown of Touma in the first volume as this, especially after he saves Index from her fate when she couldn't and keeps helping her with her problems. When she calls out Acqua for brutally beating Touma in Volume 16, it's clear she's just as much reprimanding herself for her past transgressions.
** [[spoiler: After spending New Testament 20 possessed and manipulated by Qliphah Puzzle 545, Kanzaki is left significantly distressed after she comes to her senses in New Testament 21. No matter how bizarre and monstrous they were, to her the Crowley Hazards were still Crowley, and thus still people. By killing them she had gone against her magic name and her very nature as a magician, which is to save others.]]
* MusclesAreMeaningless: She's very strong, but has a slender body with little musculature.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]. While her given name and family name can be translated to "Fire Weave" and "God Tear/Split" respectively and she lives up to her family name by being able to hold [[spoiler:the angel of the Angel Fall arc]] back without any external support, she definitely doesn't have malicious intents.
%%* NervesOfSteel
* NighInvulnerability: In the ''Miracle of Endymion'' movie, she's completely nonchalant about experiencing '''atmospheric reentry'''.
* NotSoStoic: She maintained a calm, near-emotionless demeanor while fighting Touma to get to Index, but when he chewed her out for acting needlessly antagonistic, she flew into a rage and began bludgeoning him with her (sheathed) sword while screaming at him how hard it was to handle her friend's annual LaserGuidedAmnesia.
* OnceDoneNeverForgotten: When she meets up with Touma in Volume 17, the only thing he could associate her with was the "Fallen Angel Erotic Maid" costume that she wore off-screen in Volume 16.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: She's a Saint and is explicitly compared to a nuclear weapon at one point. Her existence is part of the existing military equilibrium that keeps the Magic Side from breaking into open war.
* PlayingWithFire: She can cast fire magic, with one in particular called "Red Lotus Flames" that surrounds her target in a large flame before engulfing them in an explosion.
* PretentiousLatinMotto: "Be the salvation of those who cannot be saved".
* PropheticNames: Saint of the Far East.
* PurpleIsPowerful: They add to her nature as both a MasterSwordsman and a being with ''literal'' godly power.
* RazorFloss: The wires of her Nanasen technique have enough force to destroy concrete.
* RazorWind: When she swings her sword, her wind can knock out opponents.
* ReluctantFanserviceGirl: While her usual outfit isn't exactly conservative, she was very hesitant to express her gratitude toward Touma for repeatedly aiding the Amakusas with the revealing maid outfit that Tsuchimikado keeps pushing her to wear. She eventually worked up the will to wear it, though she's humiliated over how many people found out about it.
* TheRival: She has a friendly rivalry with her kohai, Itsuwa, because they both like the same guy.
* TheStoic: Most events don't faze her that much.
* {{Stripperific}}: Her usual outfit has a tied up shirt that reveals her waistline and really [[FormFittingWardrobe hugs her figure]], and one of her jean legs is ripped off entirely, so that one side is basically Daisy Duke shorts only an inch or so away from showing everything.
* StrongAndSkilled: She has been powerful from birth due to being born as a saint, but also learned how to fight effectively due to being trained in Amakusa's Style Combat, becoming a MasterSwordsman and a MasterOfThreads. This is why she uses her magic mostly to enhance her own physical abilities.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She has a cold and stoic exterior, but deep down is a kind and selfless woman who goes to great lengths to help the ones she cares about.
* SuperSpeed: She's capable of moving at supersonic speeds, being able to attack dozens of times every second. In Volume 7, she managed to attack 21 individual, airborne targets in the span of a second, and even then she held back so she won't accidentally kill them.
* SuperToughness: During her fight with Acqua of the Back, she tanks strikes that would have laid low any of the Amakusa members several times over, and at one point blocks a powered-up strike the narration described as having power comparable to a "small planetary collision" that tears through the entirety of the underground layer of District 22. She was still able to get up and keep fighting, albeit rapidly losing ground and bleeding.
* TomboyishPonytail: She's a TomboyWithAGirlyStreak who keeps her long hair tied in a high ponytail.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She has a tomboy-ish appearance and usually has a serious, stoic demeanor. But deep down she likes being feminine and is actually trying to model herself as a YamatoNadeshiko.
* TranquilFury: Whenever she gets upset, she usually doesn't let her emotions get the best of her (at least as long as it doesn't involve teasing about Touma). This goes out the window during her battle with Acqua of the Back, where her rage at Touma and the Amakusa's beatings at his hands causes her to start shouting at him in anger.
* WakeUpCallBoss: In the first volume, she's the first opponent Touma goes up against that he can't just punch her attacks to nullify and then punch her out. Her physical abilities alone are more than enough for her to beat him silly, and while he does land a blow, it's nowhere near enough to win. He only lives because she never intended to kill him.
* TheWorfEffect:
** Against Acqua of the Back, while she does better than anyone else before her at that point (in that she forces him to fight seriously), she's still outmatched against her fellow Saint and second-strongest member of God's Right Seat and needs the aid of the Amakusa and Touma to bring him down.
** She later gets one-sidedly pulverized by Knight Leader to display the StatusBuff that Curtana Original provides within British soil.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: In Volume 7, Touma flatly disbelieves the idea that she’s only eighteen. She might have found it an acceptable error if he hadn't gone for the ''opposite'' end of the spectrum when guessing her age. Much like with Stiyl, the reason why she also looks older is due to the miscommunication between Kamachi and Haimura.

She is a master of Kabbalah Statue art and utilizes oil pastel or chalk to draw a spell to summon a golem Sherry refers to as "Ellis".

* HopelessWithTech: Subverted, while she doesn't care much for the washing machine that confuses the other girls, she is quick to read the instructions.
* InformedFlaw: Described as both "grimy" and "slovenly" by Touma in the narration, but in the anime this only really comes across with her hair.
* LingerieScene: Sherry wears a partly transparent double negligee for casual clothes while in the dorm.
* MessyHair: Her hair sticks up in all directions and generally looks like she just went through a wind tunnel. The only exception so far is [[http://toarumajutsunoindex.wikia.com/wiki/File:Petit_Sherry.jpg an illustration of a young Sherry]] with GirlishPigtails.
* MundaneUtility: She will sometimes use her golem for menial tasks like hand washing clothes.

* ExplainingYourPowerToTheEnemy: Subverted. She claims her power is based on ''Literature/TheLittleMatchGirl'', but it is really based on Myth/NorseMythology. Stiyl nonetheless figures it out and beats her.
* FakingTheDead: Richard Brave's FlamingSword typically annihilates anything it burns, so she simply dodged the attack and hid, leaving Richard to assume she was killed.
* MamaBear: She would do anything to protect Patricia. She also has four sons and eight daughters whom she cares for dearly.
* MotorMouth: She just can't shut up, which really ticks Stiyl off.

* KnightTemplar: As soon as she thinks the Amakusa may have betrayed Necessarius, rather than try to investigate further she immediately orders them hunted down and killed. 421* NumberTwo: He's the Substitute Supreme Pontiff of the Japanese-based Amakusa-Style Remix of Church, leading the sect on behalf of Kaori who has vacated the position of Supreme Pontiff before the start of the series.
* OddlyShapedSword: His zweihänder has an elaborate basket-hilt guard and a wavy blade in the shape of a stylized flame, also known as a flammenschwert
* PaperMaster: True to the Amakusa's roots in UsefulNotes/{{Onmyodo}}.
%%* ReligiousBruiser
* ShipperOnDeck: Like the rest of his comrades, he encourages Itsuwa and Touma. Frustrated by the lack of progress in their relationship, he kicked a soccer ball into the back of Touma's head so [[MarshmallowHell he would fall directly into Itsuwa's cleavage]].
* StreetSamurai: In spite of their decision to join up with the ChurchMilitant branch of the Anglican Church, the members of the Amakusa are more loyal to each other than their parent organization. They're also rather more likely to help others out of compassion, and are very much into using edged weaponry as opposed to overt displays of magic or firearms.
* SymbolMotifClothing: He wears a shirt with a slanted red cross on it. It can be taken to represent either a Cross of St. George (a symbol commonly associated with the country and Church of England) or a saltire, in particular the Saltire of St. Patrick (which in turn is associated with the predominantly Catholic country/territory of Ireland). Curiously enough, he wore the same shirt when the Amakusas were still considered an independent Roman-Catholic offshoot.

A sixteen-year old girl and an active fighter for the Amakusa Catholics. Her weapon is a Friulian Spear that can be disassembled and reassembled for purposes of stealth. She has romantic feelings towards Touma, but due to her [[ShyBlueHairedGirl shyness]] is [[CannotSpitItOut unable to convey them]]. She also tends to be jealous of any other girl close to him, including her former Supreme Pontiff [[TheRival Kaori]].
-----
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: She wasn't introduced in the novels until volume 11. However, in the anime adaptation of the Book of the Law arc (volume 7), she appears, talking to Tatemiya, in the Amakusa's first scene (although her name is not mentioned).
* AscendedExtra: Goes from being another GirlOfTheWeek to one of Touma’s major allies from Volume 14 on.
* AlmostKiss: [[spoiler:Almost does this to Touma while asleep in Volume 16.]]
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Poor girl feels this way about Kaori.
* BadassAdorable: She's able to fight and defend herself from enemies using a spear and she has a cutesy appearance and personality.
* BerserkButton: She can't take a joke lightly (watch Saiji receive a table to his face after pulling off a prank on her). But above all, never ever hurt Touma. When [[spoiler:Acqua nearly kills him]], this otherwise shy, polite, weak girl turns into a [[UnstoppableRage nigh-unstoppable]] [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge destroyer]].
%%* BodyguardCrush: On Touma in Volume 16.
* ClothingDamage: She uses a magic that transfers damage to her clothes instead.
* {{Cosplay}}: Wore a Great Elemental Spirit/peep-maid costume.
* DrowningMySorrows: Disappointed that Touma did not arrive at the airport in Volume 17, Itsuwa drowns hers sorrows with potato shochu.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Her cooking was so good that it made Maika jealous.
* GoingCommando: She wasn't wearing a bra during Volume 14.
* HealingHands: She knows healing spells, but sadly they aren't much use for Touma due to his [[AntiMagic Imagine Breaker]].
* HeroicBSOD: Falls into one after Touma is grievously injured saving her from dying by Acqua's mace in Volume 16. Saiji [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan snaps her out of it]] and she spends the rest of the volume in TranquilFury ready to get revenge.
%%* LightningBruiser
* LoveAtFirstSight: When she debuts in Volume 11, it is shown that she already has a crush on Touma, whom she didn't meet during the events of Volume 7. In the anime however, it is shown that they first met during said arc.
* LoveHurts: She develops a deep crush on Touma, despite knowing that she has hefty competition (possibly including the leader of her own faction). During the battle against Acqua, she briefly has a HeroicBSOD upon trying and failing to protect Touma from him.
* MarshmallowHell: Briefly gives Touma one by accident in Volume 14 when she's rescuing him from drowning in a river and she pressed him against her chest to get at the parachute holding him down. In Volume 16, Touma accidentally falls face-first onto her chest after Saiji kicks a soccer ball at him. Though Itsuwa isn't angry at him, the same couldn't be said for a nearby [[spoiler:Mikoto]], despite the latter also clearly seeing Saiji kick the ball.
* MasterOfThreads: Similar to Kaori, she has a technique that uses seven steel wires to attack a target at once at seven different directions.
* NavelDeepNeckline Sported this during Volume 14. She [[ReluctantFanserviceGirl wasn't exactly happy with it]] (it was supposed to be worn over her tank top), but it was the only shirt she had that wasn't wet (including the tank top) from fishing Touma out of the river.
* NiceGirl: She is the only girl besides [[AllLovingHeroine Orsola Aquinas]] who [[ForgivingTheAccidentalPervert never gets angry at Touma]] during one of his AccidentalPervert moments.
* OnlyOneName: If she has a last name, it hasn't been revealed.
* RazorFloss: She can use steel wires as superfine blades.
* TheRedMage: Like most members of the Amakusa, she has magical abilities. However, her main focus of combat is on her spearsmanship.
* TheRival: Has a friendly rivalry with Kaori over Touma's affection.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Goes on one against Acqua of the Back for grievously injuring Touma while she could do nothing.
* RunningGag: During Touma's stay in Italy her interactions with him consist of her giving him a hot towel on multiple occasions. This gets brought up multiple times by [[ShipperOnDeck Saiji]], who states she needs to step up her game from being just the "hot-towel" girl if she wants to get Touma.
* ShyBlueHairedGirl: Subverted. She's soft-spoken and shy, which gets worse when she's around Touma, but has a hair color close to brown.
* SilkHidingSteel: She's humble, somewhat modest, and very benevolent to Touma. She basically acts like a "traditional wife" when she crashes Touma's house, too. However, she knows how to kick ass and [[spoiler:has managed to defeat Cynthia.]]
* TranquilFury: After Touma is grievously injured against Acqua of the Back, Itsuwa goes into the next fight against him with murder on her mind but manages to keep her rage focused, to the point it scares the other Amakusa members. Sadly, it avails her little against him once he gets serious.
* UniversalDriversLicense: She can ride a motorcycle, which makes sense since she's a teen. But a helicopter as well?! According to her, the only thing she's not certified to pilot is a plane.
* WolverinePublicity: Itsuwa appears in many promotional posters for the second season of ''Index'' but only has a handful of appearances and fewer than 5 speaking lines. She does become a prominent character in the third season, and gets a corresponding PromotionToOpeningTitles.

The Queen of England, and mother to the three princesses. She possesses the sword Curtana Second, a replica of the Curtana Original, which is said to grant the wielder the same power as that of the ArchangelMichael so long as they're within the boundaries of England.
----
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: Touma didn't ''have'' to help her with the Curtana issue... but if he doesn't work for her, he'll be just a tourist and have to pay a ''lot'' to stay.
%%* BigGood: For the people of England.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: She's the Queen of England and commands both great power (politically and literally) and respect as a wise ruler. She also hates having to wear fancy dresses and wanted to first appear before Index and Touma without Curtana and holding ''[[ThePowerOfRock an electric guitar]]''.
* CoolOldLady: She's very down-to-earth despite the power at her beck and call, and quite kind as well.
* DoWrongRight: As noted by both Rimea and Lola Stuart, Elizard seems more amused by Carissa's coup than anything. During her confrontation with her rebellious second daughter it becomes clear that while she does not inherently opposes her ''ideas'', she's opposed about how short-sighted they are and how dangerous they are for the people of England. If you want revolution, every person in England should be included and the benefits should be shared by all of them. She compares Carissa's coup to an [[DidntThinkThisThrough ignorant]] insurrection instead of a ''true'' societal revolution in the same kind of tone a teacher might towards a particularly stubborn student, not a queen repelling a coup.
%%* TheHighQueen
* NeverMessWithGranny: She's pushing her fifties and her daughters are all of marrying age, and she wields one of the most powerful artifacts of the British Royal Family and could very likely defeat a Saint in a one-on-one clash if it came down to it. [[spoiler:She's also fully willing to fight her much younger and physically fit daughter.]]
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: However you look at it, she's clearly based on UsefulNotes/ElizabethII.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: Being England's Queen means she has access to Curtana Second, a weapon that grants its wielder the power of the strongest of the archangels in Christian theology. Curtana can ''only'' be wielded by a member of the British royal family, at that.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler:She gives a brutal one to Carissa after she scatters the power of Curtana Original to every citizen on the English Islands, chastising her for her coup and how ultimately she wouldn't save anyone in the long run with such a "half-assed" revolution.]]
* RoyaltySuperPower: The Curtanas and the Union Jack spiritual item are magical items that only the Royal Family of Britain can wield. When used by Elizard to broadcast the power of Curtana to those who connected with England, it created a MassSuperEmpoweringEvent.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: She's one of the most powerful sorcerers introduced to the series so far, as shown when she [[spoiler:clashes with Carissa and drains the Curtana Original of all its power.]]
* TheUnmasquedWorld: If anyone under the effects of [[spoiler:Union Jack]] figured out that it was due to magic, she was fully ready to reveal the existence of magic to the world.
* WeirdnessCensor: When she used the [[spoiler:Union Jack and gave to each British citizen within Britain a small fraction of the Curtana's power, she also cast a spell that made everyone interpret the supernatural events they're witnessing and performing in a manner that made sense to them, without implicating that it's because of magic]].

* HighClassGlass: She wears a monocle in order to see properly.
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:She declares Carissa's motive at the exact moment when the knights of England and Necessarius have lost morale from Curtana Original, leading the knights to a HeelFaceTurn.]]

* AbsurdlySharpBlade: [[spoiler:Curtana Original's "All Dimensions Severing Spell" gives Carissa the ability to slice through dimensions and create dimensional debris from the attack. 523* ActionGirl: [[spoiler:She holds off Kanzaki, William Orwell, ''and'' the Knight Leader for a short time. 524* AdaptationalNiceGuy: A minor case, but there's a noticeable difference in how she confronts the servants [[spoiler:who helped Villian escape]] between the light novel and anime. In the former, she comments upon [[spoiler:her sister's "virtue" keeping her alive thanks to the efforts of others]] and fully intends to kill them all for the act of treason before relenting from Knight Leader's words (while also threatening to kill him if he tries to stop her from [[spoiler:killing her family]]). 525* ArcVillain: [[spoiler:Of Volumes 17 and 18, encompassing the British Halloween.]]
* BloodKnight: To put it mildly, she likes conflict. 527* BondageIsBad: The narration mentions her red dress gives off the impression of bondage-related clothing, and [[spoiler:even discounting her attempted coup]], she's not exactly a pleasant woman.
* ContraltoOfStrength: She has the deepest voice amongst the three princesses, and is the one in charge of military affairs.
* DarkMessiah: [[spoiler:She wants to restore England's pride and power above all else...but the way she decides to go about doing that involves killing her own family]].

* GetOutOfJailFreeCard: [[spoiler:After her ''coup d'etat'' Carissa is charged with treason and imprisoned in the Tower of London. 533* IAmNotLeftHanded: [[spoiler:The shard of Curtana Second that she possesses is destroyed... then she reveals that she has ten more shards from the sword.]]
* LadyOfWar: She's the princess whose aspect is "military might", after all. Physically she's easily the most capable fighter among her sisters.
* LaserBlade: [[spoiler:The shards of Curtana Second.]]
* LonelyAtTheTop: Touma takes note [[spoiler:by the final stretch of the fight where Carissa is desperately fighting off all the reinforcements empowered by the Union Jack by herself that while she might still wield the power of the leader of angels and is holding her own, she never looked more like the lonely monarch than in that moment, and he can't help but feel sadness at the sight and wonder if Carissa herself finally realizes it.]]
* LoopholeAbuse: [[spoiler:The Curtana can only unleash its true power [[HomefieldAdvantage while the user is in the United Kingdom]], otherwise it's just a well-made sword. Carissa gets around this by using the Curtana Second shards with a mobile fortress from the United Kingdom, which forcibly designates the surrounding lands as being "within" the United Kingdom.]]
* MadeOfIron: [[spoiler:She {{No Sell}}s an ''air raid'' and gets off from what can only be described as a magic bomb with only ClothingDamage and some bleeding. Touma even {{lampshade|Hanging}}s it by comparing her to a [[MarathonBoss boss with tons of HP]].]]
* NoSell: [[spoiler:Because the dimensional debris Curtana Original creates from cutting dimensions is a natural phenomenon, Touma's Imagine Breaker can't dispel it. However, he ''can'' negate the cut itself before the debris appears.]]
* OneManArmy: [[spoiler:With Curtana Original, by the final battle at Buckingham Palace, it's essentially her alone versus the entire Anglican Church, the Amakusas, her own Knights, Kaori, Knight Leader, William Orwell, her mother Elizard, Index, Touma, and the people of London empowered by Curtana Original's energy. She ''still'' nearly manages to pull through nothing but sheer stubbornness, the power of her weapon, and a few very powerful automated defenses]].
* PetTheDog: Although Carissa can be harsh, but she has a quirky side just like her mom, and she was the one who first willingly posed for Touma when he decided to take a picture of the royal family. However, doing so isn't a function the sword is designed to safely perform.]]
* TheUnfettered: She has a ''very'' clear vision of what a strong United Kingdom should look like, and there is no line she won't cross to see it happen, [[spoiler:be it staging a coup against her family with the intent of killing them all, cutting alliances with Academy City, threatening and planning to wage war on the European Union and especially France, and/or going down in history as a tyrant.]]
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:Her coup fit right into Fiamma of the Right's hands, because it allowed him to get the remote to control Index unimpeded. Not that anyone actually had the power to stop him if they wanted to and he didn't actually ''plan'' for her coup (he intended to just wage war on England through the European Union and take the remote that way), but the point still stands: Carissa's actions helped Fiamma far more than they helped Carissa.]]
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: Justified since her dress doesn't have pockets. [[spoiler:The Maiden of Versailles]] is not amused.
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:Carissa's facade of confidence cracks the longer the final battle with her goes on, starting with annoyance at their refusal to just fall and the destruction of her weapons, then with Rimea revealing the truth of her intentions behind her coup, then with Knight Leader and Acqua joining the battle, finally capped off with her mother arriving for the confrontation and distributing Curtana's power to the populace with the Union Jack, forcing Carissa to divide her focus between all her foes and keeping Curtana Original's power from being forcibly released as well as reeling from her mother's chastisement.]]
* VillainousValor: [[spoiler:Even as her coup collapses, her knights turn against her, the people of London join the resistance, and her own reasons for the coup out and exposed, Carissa still refuses to bend the knee and fights on alone. It's not until Touma gets lunged as a FastballSpecial and smashes both Curtana Original to pieces and decks her hard enough to go flying does she finally fall]].
* VirtueIsWeakness: Played with; she looks down on her younger sister Villian, who represents the trait of "virtue", as incompetent and weak, but it's more because she looks down on Villian's timid and nonviolent nature that leads her to rely on others for protection rather than any virtue.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:She sincerely believes the best way to protect England and make them a great superpower again is to conduct a ''coup d'etat'' and kill the former royal family using Curtana Original. She's fully willing to accept that she'll be seen as a tyrant by history if she can really protect England that way.]]
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: [[spoiler:What she thinks will happen to England should Academy City defeat the Roman Catholic Church. She very nearly does find herself on the receiving end of this from Fiamma after her coup is thwarted and he uses the chaos to get Index's remote, but Touma rushes in with the save.]]
* ZeroApprovalGambit: [[spoiler:Her plan is to slaughter the pacifistic monarchy and all of England's enemies then bear the stain of it by becoming the only person who wielded Curtana Original for that purpose. If a new monarchy deposes her from the throne then so be it. She would gladly be remembered as a tyrant if it meant all of England's enemies would be eliminated.]] This revelation results in [[spoiler:many of her knights abandoning her...because they want to ''save'' her from this fate]].

* ActualPacifist: Prior to the British Civil War she absolutely refused to learn magic, as she didn't want an ability that could be used as a weapon. This doesn't stop her from learning a spell from Index to stop a golem, however.
* AllLovingHero: She's the one who usually goes down and helps the people.
* BadassPacifist: What she becomes during the climax of the British Civil War. She takes part in the last battle wielding a magic bowgun, claiming that since Acqua and even her servants who can't use magic were willing to fight to save her despite their own fear and continuing to flee won't help them, there's no other choice for her but to stand up and fight to become a princess who can protect everyone from that kind of fear. She shows no fear while confronting Carissa on her own, despite the vast difference in power between the two, and later even shocks Carissa when she shoots her with said bowgun. This is not a one time thing, as Knight Leader notes in New Testament that her desire to take action remained and she would have picked a giant crossbow and joined the fight against Gremlin if she had been aware Acqua was participating despite not being fully healed.

----
* AchillesHeel: Both Hrunting and Thororm's Defense Formula have key weaknesses in their otherwise broken power-sets.
** Each spell on Hrunting can only be active one at a time, and there is a slight delay between switching spells. However, the Knight Leader is skilled enough that [[spoiler:William Orwell]] attempting to take advantage of this proves very difficult. [[spoiler:A more grievous one, however, is that Hrunting cannot normally bring out its full power right away and needs to power up [[BloodyMurder on an opponent's blood]]. 591** Thorom's Defense Formula (aside from only working on weapons) requires Knight Leader has to know what the opposing weapon is. 608** AwesomenessByAnalysis: He reconstructed the laws behind the sword's creation which allowed him to create entirely new spells based on the new laws.
*** AbsurdlySharpBlade: ''Slicing Power'', which allows Hrunting to cut through anything.
*** DeathInAllDirections: ''Attack Range'', which allows Hrunting to attack enemies in all directions.
*** ImprobableAimingSkills: ''Precise Accuracy'', which allows the sword to seek vital points.
*** PersonOfMassDestruction: ''Weapon Weight'', which "creates tremendous destructive force".
*** SuperSpeed: ''Movement Speed'', which makes no one able to catch up to the Knight Leader.
*** UnbreakableWeapons: ''Enduring Solidity'', which makes the sword indestructible.
** {{BFS}}: It's 3.9 meters long. The metal used for its creation apparently makes it lighter and doesn't follow the laws of physics. It shrinks down to 80 centimeters long when not powered up.
** BloodyMurder: Hrunting is said to grow in power and sharpness with the blood of every enemy it slays. The stronger the enemy, the greater the boost. During the English Civil War, Knight Leader substitutes [[spoiler:the Telesma from Curtana Original's blessing]] in place of blood to use Hrunting at full power.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Has to constantly inform people that he isn't in love with Kaori Kanzaki, he just thinks such a fine warrior would be an excellent addition to his knights.
* ShipperOnDeck: To Princess Villian and William Orwell.
* SuperpowerLottery: Just look at all of the above!
* VitriolicBestBuds: With William Orwell. The duo are not above trading jabs and trash talking one another.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:He fully believes Carissa's mind set is what's needed to protect England, to the point of being fully willing to execute Princess Villian despite being good friends with her.]]

[[folder:In General]]
* AmazonBrigade: They're a four-woman team of magicians.
* TheBlacksmith: They're incredibly skilled at forging spiritual tools.
* CoolBoat: Their suitcases, the Skíðblaðnir, can convert into a 10 meter long boat. It is based on a legendary boat from Myth/NorseMythology.
* MyCountryRightOrWrong: They're [[PatrioticFervor incredibly patriotic towards the United Kingdom]], to the point [[spoiler:they agree to back Princess Carissa's coup out of the belief she can restore the nation's strength.]] They start to have doubts as the arc rolls on, however.
* PortalNetwork: Their suitcases, the Skíðblaðnir, can instantly transport anything placed into it to another Skíðblaðnir. The New Light members use this ability to deliver things to each other. [[spoiler:And the Knight Leader has the fifth and final case in order to receive Curtana Original.]]
* SemanticSuperpower: One of their Steel Gloves' most dangerous abilities is to "grab" things and throw them at will. This includes things such as cars, dust, or ''fire''.
* SuperStrength: Their Steel Gloves boost their physical strength while being used, as one of Thor's weapons it emulates is the belt that boosted his own strength. Bayloupe is able to rip sections of subway out to throw at Itsuwa with ease, while Lessar is able to stab and lift up ''a car'' before throwing the whole thing.
* ThunderHammer:: Despite using spiritual items that emulate the power of Thor's hammer Mjolnir, the overall image is {{Defied|Trope}} because, as Bayloupe states, a giant hammer would be too unwieldy for girls of their light builds to use effectively, so they went with the more practical and versatile Steel Glove instead.

The leader of New Light, as well as the eldest member of their group. Her Steel Glove combined with her spiritual item Gjallarhorn draw power from Thor, which allows her to use the lightning-god's weapons.
----
* BystanderSyndrome: In the Side Story, [[spoiler: when the Magic Bomb was found she told Lessar this was Necessarius's job and it wouldn't benefit them in any way to stop it.]]
* FakeWeakness: When she and Lessar got into a fight, Lessar targeted her calves because she had been told that they where her weak points. They weren't.
* HairTriggerTemper: She tends to get angered easily before a mission starts.
* HavingABlast: By "grabbing" the dust in the air with her Steel Glove, she can ignite and cause it to explode.
* InstrumentOfMurder: Wields Gjallarhorn, aka the Horn of Wisdom from Myth/NorseMythology, in the form of the horn-shaped hearing-aid-like devices on her ears, which helps her channel thunder and lightning.
* OutGambitted: Defeats Itsuwa rather easily, but during her escape into the railway tunnels she's tricked and lured into a closed-off section of Necessarius' Special Admissions Test that was sealed off for being too dangerous (i.e. people kept dying during the trials here) and is ultimately overpowered and defeated there.
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: Wears blue tights under her skirt.
* ShockAndAwe: Her Steel Gloves and Gjallarhorn together emulate Thor's weapons. One of her most powerful spells seems to be a bombardment of lightning used as a long-range area-of-effect attack.

A member of New Light whose life is saved by Touma over the course of several events. Feeling indebted to her "savior", she dedicates her energy to successfully convincing him to serve England by any means necessary. In addition to her Steel Glove, she wields a spiritual item in the form of a metal dragon tail to provide her with extra dexterity and movement support.
----
* BlowYouAway: Seems to use a combination of the four directions and their elemental correspondence in order to control the air around her.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: According to Bayloupe, Lessar is the strongest magician of New Light in terms of battling ability, and she proves it during her running battle/escape from Touma and Oriana. However, she's also incredibly loud, energetic, can't keep a low profile to save her life, and tends to act first and think later. The reason Touma and Oriana find her out is because she makes a scene at a pub that gets police attention...because she mixed up her Skíðblaðnir suitcase with two other people's almost-identical bags and ended up stealing all three and running out after holding up the entire place. And the reason ''that'' happened was because she decided to slack off, get food, and didn't keep an eye on her case when said people showed up.
* {{Dominatrix}}: After [[spoiler: Touma was confirmed to be alive and with Birdway]] she donned the suit and decided "Giving him treats didn't work, so I have no choice but to start swinging the whip!!"
* EntendreFailure: Before trying to eat a large sandwich that Touma doubts she can even fit in her mouth, she says she prides herself on her ability to fit surprisingly large objects inside. And then adds that he can even think of that in an indecent way if he likes. He still doesn't get it.
* FilleFatale: [[spoiler:Works with Touma during World War III with the goal of trying to get him to work for the UK. She seems to be under the impression that if she can get him to sleep with her that equals Mission Accomplished. She's about fourteen.]]
* FragileSpeedster: She's fast (described as having speed like a short-distance sprinter and maintaining it over the course of a marathon) but hasn't really shown herself to be too durable. Despite this, Bayloupe claims that Lessar is actually the strongest of New Light when it comes to raw battle ability.
* HeelFaceTurn: Well, she was never ''really'' [[MyCountryRightOrWrong evil, just misguided]], but during WorldWarIII she becomes one of Touma's staunchest allies and continues to be such throughout New Testament.
* InASingleBound: She can jump to the top of a building with the aid of her Dragon Tail.

%%* LittleMissBadass
* LovableSexManiac: The member of Touma's UnwantedHarem who makes her desires for him clearest of all, and the one fully willing to act on it.
%%* PlayboyBunny: In the second Railgun SS.
* PlayingWithFire: She uses her Steel Glove to condense flames into a ball at the tip of her weapon she can launch her targets.
* PrehensileTail: Her magic metal "dragon tail" not only helps her maintain balance when she makes her giant leaps, it can also act in response to her thoughts to grab at people or even hold her spear.
* RescueRomance: [[spoiler:One-sided. Touma saved her life and as usual, is oblivious to her attraction to him (or at the very least, just thinks she's trying to seduce him to dupe him into her group).]]
* SingleTargetSexuality: While she has thrown out vague sexual innuendo at others both before and after she meets him, she thinks Touma is her soulmate.
* SheKnowsTooMuch: Nearly gets offed by one of the Knights of England [[spoiler:after successfully transferring Curtana Original to clean up loose ends, but was saved by Touma and Oriana.]]
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: After jumping to the top of a building without thinking, she panicked when she realized how high up she was.

A member of New Light. She mostly avoids combat, and thus avoids any major participation in the British civil war due to being outside of London.
----
* ACupAngst: Says she considers her chest to be the standard for the smallest. To Mikoto's dismay, Lancis' chest is still larger than hers.
* BarelyThereSwimwear: She wore a V-Slingshot swimsuit in the second Railgun SS: Shopping Mall Demonstration.
* FemmeFatalons: Even discounting her "dragon claws", her nails are very long.
* TheHyena: Her magic apparently makes her feel ticklish, which causes her to break out into uncontrollable fits of laughter.
* MagicalSensoryEffect: Lancis has a strange condition that, whenever she refines her life energy into magic power, it give her a tickling feeling. Useful to detect other people emitting magic power too.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Has no problem with changing in public.
* TheSlacker: Acts lethargic and falls asleep often.
* SpiderSense: Because she detects magic through the sensation of tickling, she can detect when people are using spells around herself, which helps her avoid danger.
* StatusBuff: Uses status inducing spells to lower the enemy's capabilities and make it easier for her comrades to assault them with their own more offensive-based magic.
* WolverineClaws: Wears "dragon claws" on her fingers.

A member of New Light. She is the driver of the group, [[ImprobableAge despite being only 15 years old]] and uses a spiritual item in the form of dragon wings on her back for flight in conjecture with her Steel Glove.
----
* CurbStompBattle: Gets taken out with ease by Kanzaki, with the light novel noting her Steel Glove just can't compare to the power of a Saint.
* ImprobableAge: She can drive at 15.
* SheKnowsTooMuch: When captured by the Knights of England, [[spoiler:she notes that the Knights probably plan to kill the members of New Light.]]
* UnknownRival: Has a grudge against Touma for turning her into the custody of the Amakusa Catholics, which he naturally doesn't notice.
* WingsDoNothing: DoubleSubverted. It allowed her and Touma to fly off a moving vehicle, but well, [[AntiMagic Touma]] is there and she was grabbing his right hand at the time. She apparently usually uses them as a tool to retrieve Lessar from her usual position on the front lines.
