Context CarnivoreConfusion / VideoGames

Go To

* Web-based pet sims often have this problem. For example, carnivorous ''Website/{{Neopets}}'' can and do eat other Neopets (a specific example is the abandon with which Lupes eat Chias), despite all of them being sentient. Food items made out of pets can be bought by users and fed to pets, which has the side-effect of Neopets being fine with cannibalism (e.g. a Meerca will not object to eating a Meerca Pie). There used to be "normal" animals such as fish and cows to give milk but, except for some outdated materials such as items of encyclopedia pages, this practice is being [[EarthDrift phased out.]]
* ''VideoGame/BeyondGoodAndEvil'' has anthropomorphic pigs, cows, and goats, among others...and a freezer area full of rotting beef. And a place called ''the Slaughterhouse''. And Pey'j, a pig, seems to be the subject of several jokes about ''being eaten''.
-->'''Pey'j:''' Thanks, Jade...if it weren't for you, I would've ended up on a plate with an apple in my mouth!\
'''Jade:''' Cut it out. You're making me hungry!
** Since you handily collect species information about every animal in the game, it's worth noting that Pey'j is "Sus sapiens" (wise pig), parallel to "Homo sapiens" (wise man). So it's reasonable to guess that regular animals and their anthropomorphic analogs are completely different species and that it's fine to eat the non-intelligent kinds.
** There's also an anthropomorphic shark who brags about his ability to devour "a family of five" in record time, along with his family's achievements in this area. A family of five ''what'' is never addressed.
* The short horror game ''VideoGame/CafeVenusFlytrap'' is about an anthropomorphic fly who visits a cafe staffed by serial-killer frogs who butcher flies and other animals to make meat pies by serving them drugged pastries and then trapping them in venus flytrap plants.
* ''Franchise/SuperMarioBros'':
** In the ''Franchise/SuperMarioBros'' series, the Mushroom Kingdom is mainly inhabited by anthropomorphic mushrooms like Toad. Then in the RPG games, it's discovered that normal mushrooms are also the Mushroom Kingdom's main food source. And there's also a pig who runs a hot dog stand... Of course there's still the question of why all the mushrooms have ''eyes''...
** There are a couple of stages in ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DWorld'' where you can carry a Piranha Plant to gobble up enemies... including ''other Piranha Plants''.
* ''VideoGame/{{Spore}}'' averts this -- as a Carnivore or Omnivore creature, you can socialize with the same creatures you are capable of killing and eating. The same holds true in the Tribal stage, and any other tribes don't seem to mind if you're slaughtering other sapient creatures and consuming them. (Not averted so much if you're playing Tribal as a straight carnivore and offer a gift basket of meat to a tribe of herbivores...)
* ''VideoGame/AnimalCrossing'', being ''Animal Crossing'', mostly avoids this. Characters are pesco-lacto-vegetarians.
** Well, ''AC'' avoids this for 364 days of the year. The most obvious exception is the "Harvest Festival", wherein everyone in town gathers at the wishing well for a great big Thanksgiving-esque dinner with no turkey. The only food there seems to be stuffing, vegetables, and the like...with the exception of one big, empty platter. As it turns out, the "guest of honor", a turkey named Franklin, has been in hiding ever since he got a letter from the mayor.
-->'''Franklin:''' "We cordially invite you to be the main guest at our annual Harvest Festival. Heh heh heh hoorf..." What's wrong with that?!? I can even see where the word "dish" was erased and then replaced with "guest!"
** While Franklin is never actually eaten (it's ''Animal Crossing'', after all,) the implications of the whole thing make this the grade-A, prime-cut stuff of nightmares. In ''City Folk'', at least, the villagers seem to genuinely want to welcome Franklin; they'll say something that ''sounds'' bad, such as 'I can't wait for dinner with our guest', then follow it up with 'I even researched his culture's food and made some so he'll feel more at home'. Mayor Tortimer is really the only one being truly creepy about it. As of ''New Leaf'' though, the problem seems to have been cleared up entirely by making Franklin a chef (making his invitation sensible), and having Tortimer retire.
** The rest of the year, there are several different foods available for the villagers to discuss in their mix-'n'-match randomized dialogue, and the game goes to ''very'' careful extents to make sure to specify that every food that could possibly contain meat is either a "vegetarian" version or made with [[NoCartoonFish fish]]. Examples include salmon ravioli and vegetarian meatloaf. At least, in ''Wild World'' and ''City Folk''. The first game wasn't so careful, and there was a giant cow talking about hamburgers. The eating-fish-is-okay thing is referenced in [[http://www.brawlinthefamily.com/?p=1738 This]] ''Webcomic/BrawlInTheFamily'' strip.
** Occasionally, an animal villager will ask the player character to catch a specific fish, not all of which are biologically fish in the modern sense. But two species of "fish" in the game are the frog and the octopus, and some of the villagers are frogs and octopodes.
** The rice cooker item in ''New Leaf'' can be made to have chicken rice in it, despite the fact villagers can be chickens.
* ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'':
** Sonic (as a trademark of his character) and Vector are shown eating chili dogs, and Big catches fish.
** This franchise has an exceptionally strange treatment of animals; for example, Sonic also rescues pigs from inside Dr. Robotnik's badniks. Ian Flynn, head author of [[ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogArchieComics the comics]], tried to clear this up [[http://www.bumbleking.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7330&start=225&sid=5074ea2d5bc0bafa98bdfa69387539b4 by explaining]] that there are ''three'' classes of animals: anthros, "animal friends" (who are similar to regular animals but display some anthropomorphic characteristics), and regular animals - an idea that, while fairly consistent with established lore, is never spelled out in game canon This explanation has been met with a mixed reception by the fanbase.
* In the casual HiddenObjectGame ''Mushroom Age'' the first era you travel to is Dinosaur Age, where you meet a T-rex. He has a toothache, and the game character explains that it's from eating meat and that he should only eat fruits and vegetables. The puzzle following is sorting the things he "should" eat from the things he "shouldn't".
* ''VideoGame/BanjoKazooie'' isn't subject to only carnivore confusion, as ''everything'', from the [[AbnormalAmmo eggs used as ammunition]] to the orange given to a hungry monkey, is alive, sapient, and capable of SpeakingSimlish. Making it worse/better is that most of them are rather accepting of their fate; for example a fish that can be rescued in the second game that isn't even mildly annoyed it was about to be cooked and eaten before the plot arrived. Made worse by the fact it was canonically his pet goldfish.
* High up on a cliff in ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid3SnakeEater'', if you kill a guard, buzzards may feed on his corpse. If you then kill the buzzard and collect its meat, you get a bigger dose of stamina from consuming it. This comes back to haunt you when facing The Sorrow, as the [[OurGhostsAreDifferent spirits of all the people you killed up to that point]] march along the river towards you. If you ate the meat of a buzzard that scavenged off a guard, he'll come shuffling towards you, crying "You ate me!"
* Brought up by Arcueid Brunestad in ''VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}}''. When asked by the main character why she, a vampire, didn't eat humans, she asks him if he would eat animals if they could talk to him. The interesting thing about Arcueid is she's been RaisedByWolves so came up with this value by herself.
* ''VideoGame/{{Furcadia}}'' makes it clear that the major non-sentient lifeforms in the planet suitable for food are fish and birds, yet there is a playable sentient bird-race...
* The classic Ritman/Drummond graphic adventure ''VideoGame/HeadOverHeels'', as well as being one of the cutest games ''ever'' (check out the remake on [[http://retrospec.sgn.net/ RetroSpec]]), has save points in the form of Reincarnation Fish which "like to be eaten ? there have been reports of them jumping onto plates".
* The game ''VideoGame/{{Lugaru}}'' has wolves and rabbits, both heavily anthropomorphised. In the game, the wolves state their desire to enslave and eat the rabbits on the island of Lugaru; for some time, apparently, the wolves and rabbits lived in balance, but in the game the rabbit king turns traitor to the wolves in the attempt to save himself and his family, forcing the main character (a rabbit) to kill all the wolves.
* Played straight in ''[[VideoGame/{{Oddworld}} Abe's Odyssey]]'' (and its sequels). The glukkons want to use their cheap labor as a cheaper filler for their new taste sensation.
* In the ''VideoGame/JakAndDaxter'' series, the majority of the {{Talking Animal}}s are either [[HeelRaceTurn reformed]] [[{{Mooks}} Lurkers]] or [[WeaselMascot ottsels]] like [[SnarkyNonHumanSidekick Daxter]]. However, there is one [[PollyWantsAMicrophone bird]] named [[EmbarrassingFirstName Pecker]]. There's a scene in the racing spin-off ''[[VehicularCombat Jak X]]'' where he sees [[CombatCommentator Blitz]] eating poultry and objects, saying that that could be his uncle. So apparently macaw {{exp|y}}ies are food in that universe.
* A short instance in ''VideoGame/{{Terranigma}}'' finds your character, Ark, trapped in an icy cave with a talking goat. . . and the goat's dead husband. The next morning the goat asks if you are hungry and would like some breakfast, before walking over to her husband (complete with dramatic music cue).
** The goat claims they must do what they need to survive, and the world would be without another goat otherwise. Ark becomes distraught and decides against the offer, disgusted. The goat informs him that he, "must be stronger". Shortly thereafter. . . the goat opens up a new area by ramming into it, and the character can climb to safety, the goat informs him she will make it out later. [[spoiler: She doesn't. If you go back to the same area later, you will find not one, but two dead goats. She cannibalized her husband for nothing]]
* Periodically shows up in ''Franchise/TouhouProject''. Mystia Lorelei the sparrow youkai is frequently subjected to poultry jokes, starting from her debut in ''VideoGame/TouhouEiyashouImperishableNight'', where both Yuyuko and Remilia apparently feed on her in their respective storylines. In side material, Mystia is sometimes seen shilling grilled lamprey as an alternative to poultry.
** Utsuho Reiuji's favorite food is boiled eggs, even though she's also a bird (a Hell raven)...but [[TruthInTelevision corvids do eat bird eggs, including those of their own kind]], so [[FridgeBrilliance this is hardly unexpected]].
** The artbook ''Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red'' contains an InUniverse newspaper article where [[MoonRabbit Reisen Inaba]] protests the Hakurei Shrine's plans to serve rabbit stew at an upcoming festival. [[HypocriticalHumor And then she protests the fact that there's nothing to eat at the festival.]] During the interview portion, she suggests that they serve poultry instead...and doesn't seem to care that it bothers the reporter, [[{{Tengu}} Aya]].
* The setting of ''VisualNovel/HatofulBoyfriend'' is a world in which [[TalkingAnimal sapient birds]] have become the dominant civilization. Our heroine is a [[ContemporaryCaveman human hunter-gatherer who lives in a cave]] and can't sit still in class without some red meat. Nobirdy seems to mind.
** At the summer festival, if dating Ryouta, they go to a yakitori stand for dinner. Afterwards, Ryouta provides a possible HandWave by commenting on the differing rates at which different birds are becoming intelligent.
*** May be justified considering the reason for birds [[UpliftedAnimal changing]] - [[spoiler: humanity engineered a virus to eradicate avian life, [[GoneHorriblyWrong which did not go as planned]]. They may have designed the virus to not affect domestic poultry, which the uplifted birds of the game's era still slaughter and consume.]]
** Given a dark twist if you date [[spoiler: Dr. Iwamine, who murders Yuuya and sends the heroine his roasted body as a Christmas feast]].
** Yuuya's route has a mention of the rumors about the poultry in the cafeteria and the quill pens sold in the store. [[spoiler: Turns out some of both are made from the bodies of students who have disappeared]].
* [[DoubleSubversion Double subverted]] in ''VideoGame/BookwormAdventures''. Codex, who is a bird, appears happy to help Lex the worm in his quest; [[spoiler: at the end of the game, however, he turns out to be a TreacherousAdvisor]].
* In ''VideoGame/EtrianOdysseyIVLegendsOfTheTitan'', you can hunt at various points while flying to get food that gives you buffs. In the third area of the game, the food you get from hunting spots is rabbit meat. After completing the third area, you unlock the Bushi class, who are [[FunnyAnimal antropomorphic animals]], including a rabbit as a possible choice. Or you can just recruit Kibagami the bull into your guild, then take him to the first area and make him eat the non-humanoid bulls there.
* It is averted in ''VideoGame/TheNightOfTheRabbit''. In an optional dialogue [[CivilizedAnimal Mousewood]]'s tells that they have a law stating "if it breathes, it is not food".
* Parodied in ''VideoGame/StarOceanTheLastHope''. Meracle is a CatGirl. Sarah is a WingedHumanoid. Therefore it isn't very long before Meracle develops a culinary interest in the "chicken". Putting the two characters in the same quarters on your ship [[HilarityEnsues causes much hilarity to ensue]].
* In ''VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft'', the Tauren exist alongside normal cattle, as well as Quillboars and normal pigs. While beef/pork jokes are made on occasion, it's inherently clear that actually ''eating'' a member of a humanoid animal race would be cannibalism. [[ImAHumanitarian Not that some races care]].
* ''Franchise/SpyroTheDragon'' has Hunter, a cheetah, and Bianca, a rabbit, fall in love.
* A key part of the backstory in ''VideoGame/ThemsFightinHerds'': the sentient ungulates, tired of being preyed on by carnivores, [[SealedEvilInACan sealed them all in]] a PrisonDimension. All save for a handful of wolves who became sheepdogs and explicitly subsist on non-sapient vermin that would otherwise destroy the sheeple's crops, the technically omnivorous longma, who abstain from meat by choice, and anything too small to pose a reliable threat to a reasonably-sized ungulate. Problem is, the seal's starting to come undone, and the sealed predators are ''hungry''.
* ''VideoGame/CarriesOrderUp'' has sea creatures such as sharks as customers at the restaurant. Not only will you never see them attack any of the other customers, but they're just as likely to order a salad as they are a steak.
* In ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaBreathOfTheWild'', one can meet a Rito, the game's BirdPeople, at a meat shop, where she expresses disappointment that it doesn't supply poultry. Similarly, at a shop ran by a Rito, one can sell poultry meat with no questions being raised at all. Additionally, the [[FishPeople Zora]] actively sell and eat fish (of course, fish in real life have no problem eating smaller fish, and the same applies to some birds).
* Inklings in ''Franchise/{{Splatoon}}'' are shown to have a thing for seafood, though the devs ''have'' confirmed that not all ocean animals evolved like inklings and jellyfish did. At the very least, fans are ''reasonably'' certain that the fried squid rings so often mentioned are made from non-sapient squids (as the devs have also confirmed that not all squids evolved into Inklings), but...
-->'''Marie''': They're morbidly delicious!
* One of the [=NPCs=] you can speak to in ''VideoGame/{{Cuphead}}'' is a cartoon fish casually doin' some fishin' by a riverbank near the first mausoleum. Talkin' to 'em nets you a warning that you're "spookin' the fish".
** A vegetarian twist of this trope appears in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gKRzuNcwdI the trailer for the Macintosh release]], which has Cuphead and Mugman munching on apples, much to the dismay of an apple-headed character.
* ''VideoGame/ToothAndTail'' [[{{Deconstruction}} deconstructs]] and takes this to the LogicalExtreme. In a nutshell: it's a game about a civilization of various species of sapient animals waging a four-way civil war called [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin The War For Meat]]. It only gets worse from here, what with the entire race of pigs being enslaved for the sole purpose of being the meat, and pretty much all the animals involved can get by perfectly well on plants, but they refuse to, deeming it uncivilized.
* ''VideoGame/RolyPolysNoNanakorobiyaoki'' has Jumping Jack Bu, a pig who [[GluttonousPig loves eating roast pork]].
* In ''VideoGame/FarnhamFables'', HumanoidAnimals are considered human in pretty much every respect, and this includes diet. Even humanoids based on herbivores are sometimes mentioned to eat meat, and there is no taboo against eating the flesh of one's non-humanoid counterpart (for example, the command "Give Billy Fischer to Bread" in Episode 3 will give a message mentioning that the [[SharkMan shark humanoid]] enjoys shark meat sandwiches).
* ''VideoGame/BombChicken'': Most of the employees doing actual work at BFC are also birds...and they're shown eating the factory's fried chicken. While they're clearly not ''chickens'', they also don't bear any resemblance to actual birds of prey.
* ''VideoGame/ABugsLife'': While Rosie is still friendly to Flik and the others, other spiders in the game serve as enemies.
* A minor but rather {{Squick}}y example appears in ''VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia'' has encounters with [[HarpingOnAboutHarpies harpies]] who drop "chicken" when defeated. A rather disgusting thing to eat considering that, despite having wings and some conveniently-censoring feathers, they look entirely human.
* In ''VideoGame/ShepherdsCrossing,'' your ExpositionFairy is a talking duck, but you can raise non-talking ducks for meat. In the second game, he gets nervous when one of your neighbors shows you how to slaughter poultry, but he turns right back around and drools over the ''other'' meat you can butcher your farm animals for.
* This is a recurring thing in ''VideoGame/BugFables'' since predatory insects and insects that they would normally prey upon are often shown living and hanging out together (with the sole exception of the "lesser bugs" who never developed sapience and remain the beasts of instinct), but the biggest example comes in the form of minor [=NPCs=] Seb and Madeleine. Seb is the humble cicada butler to the rich Madeleine, who is not only a wasp, but a ''cicada killer wasp'' at that. This doesn't prevent them from having a strong bond however, and there are two sidequests dedicated to helping a worried Madeleine find Seb after he goes missing.
* {{Downplayed}} in ''VideoGame/DragonQuestXI''. Mermaids and Fish men can communicate with fish, but they still eat fish. There is a law in place where you have to warn a fish in advanced that you plan to eat them to give them a fair chance at escaping with their life. There is a side quest where a fish man is put on trial for biting a fish without the prior warning.
* The ''VideoGame/LonelyWolfTreat'' series features animal folk that can shapeshift between a LittleBitBeastly form and their true animal form. A meat industry still exists in the world, though it only makes use of animals that [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman do not have this ability]], such as chickens and pigs. A secret book in Eleni's house theorizes that [[spoiler:due to overpopulation and food shortage, some animal species were [[ShapeshifterModeLock cursed to permanently remain in animal form]] to make them more acceptable to eat]]. Predator species are often feared for their ability to eat prey species, although it's implied historical records of this may be overblown. And to top it all off, [[spoiler: Trick at one point encounters a cult of ''mice'' who captured and ritually eat travellers.]]
* In ''VideoGame/DensetsuNoStafy4'', Kamekichi is a turtle fisherman who just happens to be in a world where there are anthropomorphic fish.
* PlayedForLaughs in the opening cutscene of ''VideoGame/MutantYearZeroRoadToEden''. The party is scavenging a gas station convenience store when [[BirdPeople Dux]] comes across a tin of spam. Initially he's delighted... until he turns and sees [[PigMan Bormin]] giving him a DeathGlare, causing Dux to reluctantly put it back.
