* The brief scene with Frederick Douglass, looking as imposing to Shaw as anyone he's ever met.
* The moment early in the film when Shaw reads a proclamation to the newly formed 54th that any man who wishes to leave is free to do so given the Confederate declaration that all enemy black troops will be summarily shot, and wakes up in the morning wondering how many have taken him up on it, only to fine out that none of them have.
--> '''Shaw:''' ''Glory Hallelujah."
* "If you men will take no pay...then ''none of us will''."
** "Tear it up!"
* Black children stare in wonder at the 54th as they march past former plantations, and Sergeant Major Rawlins says "That's right, Hons. Ain't no dream. We runaway slaves but we come back fightin' men. Go tell your folks how kingdom come in the year of jubilee!" The swelling music adds to the impact.
* The 54th's first and long-awaited combat engagement at James Island, where they finally prove themselves in battle.
* The scene where the 54th is cheered as they head out for the assault on Fort Wagner is one that makes the audience want to stand up and cheer along with them.
** "Give 'em hell, 54th!!"
* The entire assault on Battery Wagner (Fort Wagner in the movie), but particularly the final charge. After getting absolutely hammered by artillery for almost half a day, the 54th manage goes on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge after Shaw's killed. They overran the parapet and partially occupy the fort, before they are finally beaten back (off-camera) by the fort's internal defenses. Their courage and sacrifice inspired over 180,000 black volunteers to enlist and help turn the tide of the US Civil War.
