''Great Mazinger'' (グレートマジンガー, Gurēto Majingā) is the second entry of the Mazinger series by manga artist Go Nagai and a direct continuation of the successful ''Anime/MazingerZ''. It was aired on Japanese television in 1974, immediately following the end of the first series, and it ran for 56 episodes.

Several millennia ago, a powerful civilization named Mycenae thrived in the Greek island of Bardos. To defend their island from invaders, they employed [[HumongousMecha metallic giants]] [[ChestBlaster that blasted tongues of fire from their chests]]. However, an earthquake destroyed their island and the Mycenae disappeared. For a long while it was believed they perished right then, but it was false. In reality they were forced to seek shelter underground, and a lot of them grafted their heads into powerful mechanical bodies to survive. However they longed to return to the surface again and getting the sunlight, fresh air, and unpolluted water back.

Many centuries later, Dr. Hell and Dr. Kabuto conducted research on Bardos and through different means both of them reached the conclusion that their civilization was still alive. Dr. Hell decided on allying himself with one them. (Which turned out to be a bad move). Dr. Kabuto suspected the Mycenae were preparing to return to the surface and take it back from humans and he decided to start taking precautions.

When his son and his daughter-in-law were mortally injured in a laboratory accident that went awry, he turned his son into a cyborg to keep him alive and revealed to him his plans and his fears. Kenzo Kabuto agreed to work secretly to prevent the Mycenae invasion.

After the ending of ''Anime/MazingerZ'', Mazinger Z was easily destroyed by the Mycenae Battle Beasts. Kouji and Sayaka went to study in America, leaving the defense of Earth on the hands of Tetsuya Tsurugi and Jun Hono, two combat-pro [[ConvenientlyAnOrphan orphans]] who are slightly DarkerAndEdgier compared to Kouji and Sayaka. Piloting Great Mazinger -an upgrade to Mazinger Z, built by Kenzo, Kouji’s NotQuiteDead father, by improving upon his father’s plans- and Venus A, [[BattleCouple Tetsuya and Jun]] go to battle the Mycenae Empire, led by the Emperor of Darkness, and eventually Tetsuya becomes the WorthyOpponent of TheDragon, The Great General of Darkness.

Considered DarkerAndEdgier than its predecessor, ''Anime/GreatMazinger'' was less successful and less popular among fans. It was followed by the next, and final, entry of the trilogy, ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer''. There were several {{crossover}}s among it and other Creator/GoNagai series, such as ''Manga/GetterRobo'' and ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer'', and the two main characters reappeared in ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}''.

A Character Sheet is now in construction.

----
!!This series features examples of:

* AHeadAtEachEnd: Several Mycenae War Beasts had a head at each end (an occurrence happened more often than you would think since ALL Mycenae War Beasts had several heads: one of them was the {{Humongous Mecha}}'s head and the other -or others- belonging to the human warrior fused with the mecha). This trope was used for first time in the Mazinger universe in the ''Mazinger Z vs Great General of Darkness'' feature.
* AnArmAndALeg:
** Great Mazinger (literally) at the end of his fight with the General of Darkness.
** Happens regularly to Jun and Boss' mechas.
* AbusiveParents - ParentsAsPeople: Kenzo Kabuto. He almost died from a laboratory experiment gone wrong, but his father saved his life. However, both of them thought [[spoiler:it would be better not to tell Kouji and Shiro -- Kenzo's sons -- he had survived. For YEARS Kouji and Shiro grew up mostly alone, thinking their father died alongside their mother, though he did have the [[DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou pretty decent excuse]] that he was building a HumongousMecha to defend humankind.]] When this was revealed, Kouji was too glad to accept his father, but Shiro took a long while until he could forgive him. Also, Kenzo had no troubles slapping Tetsuya when he thought his adoptive son was crossing the line. All of it finally bit everyone's butts at the end of the series.
* AbusivePrecursors: The Mycenae Empire.
* TheAce: Tetsuya is considered this. [[spoiler:Surprisingly, Tetsuya himself is the only person who have any kind of doubts about it.]]
* AcePilot: Tetsuya. Considering the fact that he is a well trained combat pro, this is pretty logical.
* ActionHoggingOpening: The opening of the trilogy feature more action -- featuring the titular {{HumongousMecha}}s tearing their way through an army of enemies -- and a better animation than an average episode of their series -- especially of ''Grendizer''.
* AdvancedAncientAcropolis: The Mycenae inhabited the Greek island of Bardos. Their technological level was miles ahead of any other culture of the same time, and the rest of the world would need millennia to catch up. However, one earthquake shook their island and destroyed their cities, and they were forced to seek shelter underground. They founded another civilization BeneathTheEarth, but on the surface the only remainder left of their presence were abandoned, decaying ruins, and old legends about the HumongousMecha they used to defend their land.
* AirJousting: Great Mazinger was able to fly, and the Avian Host was comprised of bird-alike AnimalMecha specialized in these kinds of battles. Aerial duels were constant, the first happening in the first episode and the last of them in the last episode.
* AirborneAircraftCarrier: Mykeros and later Demonika, Mycenae Empire's flying fortresses. All of them were flying fortresses with formidable attack prowess and the capability to store several War Beasts.
* AllYourColorsCombined:
** The [[spoiler:final battle]] is won when Mazinger, Great Mazinger, Diana A and Venus A combine their strongest attacks to bring CoolAirship Demonika down.
** Great Mazinger and ''Manga/GetterRobo'' have also combined their attacks in several movies.
* AlliterativeName: Tetsuya Tsurugi, Kenzo Kabuto.
* AlwaysChaoticEvil: The Mycenae play with this trope. The Warrior Monsters are HumongousMecha with the head of a Mycenae soldier implanted in the giant mechanical body. Since the soldiers are indoctrinated to attack and wipe out anything non-related to the Mycenae civilization, the trope is justified. On the other hand, the commanders of the army display different personalities and even honorable qualities (specially Ankoku Daishogun), and even though they are not portrayed as good, they are not portrayed as proud of being evil, either. They're more like a proud race of warriors who want to return to the surface world after being forced to live underground for a millennia.
* AnimalMecha: The Mycenae Empire army was split in seven divisions. Five out of those seven were named after the animals their mechas resembled: mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes and insects.
* ArmedLegs: Great Mazinger has two attacks based around this; the Knee Impulse Kick (a retractable knee spike) and the Backspin Kick (a cutting blade in the lower leg).
* ArrogantKungFuGuy : Tetsuya, mostly a {{Jerkass}} on daily basis, who always makes sure you know that he is a Combat Pro, both by his attitude, and his performance at battle.
* AttackAttackAttack: Tetsuya Tsurugi is the worst offender in the whole trilogy. He is a hard-headed BloodKnight who never, ''ever'', retreats.
** In the ''Great Mazinger vs Manga/GetterRobo'' feature, Tetsuya tried all of Great Mazinger's weapons against an EldritchAbomination. None of them worked, and the monster ripped off Great's arms and melted one leg. What did Tetsuya do? He tried to ''headbutt it''.
** In one of the first episodes, [[TheProfessor Kenzo Kabuto]] had to actually threaten him with -- to Tetsuya -- a FateWorseThanDeath: "Return to the Fortress NOW or else you will be out of Great Mazinger... permanently."
** In his climatic SwordFight with TheDragon Great General of Darkness, his mecha was damaged and running out of power and he was badly hurt after a battle when he was informed that the Great General of Darkness -- the biggest villain badass of the Mazinverse -- was approaching to challenge him. Everyone exhorted him to run away. What did Tetsuya do? Pick up [[DualWielding two swords]] and meet his rival's challenge.
* BeehiveBarrier: The Fortress of Science used a BeehiveBarrier to protect the facility when under attack.
* BeneathTheEarth: The Mycenae. Their civilization thrived in the Greek island of Bardos millennia ago. An earthquake destroyed their island and forced them to seek shelter underground. They lived below Earth for millennia, building their cities in networks of subterranean tunnels and caverns and grafting their bodies into HumongousMecha to survive. Unlike other examples from this trope they did not strictly harbor a grudge against humans... but they did not like them, either.
* BerserkButton: Unless your name is Jun Hono or Kenzo Kabuto, do NOT EVER slight Tetsuya's skills.
** As an example, an arc of the GosakuOta episodes has a CorruptCorporateExecutive steal Great Mazinger's plans to produce and sell his own HumongousMecha. One of his imitations manages to defeat Great Mazinger (by preventing Tetsuya from docking). When Kenzo, Tetsuya and Jun tries to convince him to stop building HumongousMecha, the man says they were just jealous his robot was stronger than Great Mazinger. Tetsuya immediately lunges at him, shouting he had NOT lost.
** And don't even try to hurt or threaten Jun or Kenzo, as Several Mycenae Battle Beasts [[Spoiler:including the Great Marshall of Hell]] found the hard -- and extremely painful -- way.
--->'''Tetsuya:''' "Jun was a very special person to me! GUILLOTINE KICK!"
* BigBad: Emperor of Darkness.
* BigCreepyCrawlies: Overlapping with AnimalMecha, one whole host of the Mycenae Empire army were bio-mechanical, massive insects. Their commander, General Scarabeth, resembled a gigantic rhinoceros beetle.
* BigDamnHeroes: Tetsuya's forte. Even his debut was a BigDamnHeroes moment in the final episode of ''Anime/MazingerZ'', where, fresh off beating Dr. Hell, a new, more powerful army appears and promptly whups Mazinger Z. When all hope seems lost, the brand shiny new Great Mazinger shows up on scene and proceeds to hand the new enemies their butts. Tends to happen a lot in the remakes, generally kicked off with a nice, big Thunder Break.
* BlackAndWhiteMorality: At first sight the Mazinger trilogy seems belonging to this trope since the the heroes are mostly good guys and the villains tend to be pure evil, but in reality the morality in these series is more greyish than it seems. [[MadScientist Dr.]] [[BigBad Hell]] [[FreudianExcuse became mad after having endured years of abuse, insults and mockery from everybody -including his parents- since he was a little kid, and even when he made a good action, he usually got beaten and scorned]]. [[Anime/GreatMazinger The Great General of Darkness]] wanted to take over the surface world because the Mycenae civilization had been forced to live underground for millennia and he wanted his people to once again enjoy things humans take for granted; seeing sunlight again and breathing fresh air. [[Anime/UFORoboGrendizer Emperor Vega]] began invading other planets because his own homeworld was dying, and several of his henchmen were {{WellIntentionedExtremist}}s wanted establishing a benevolent dictatorship because they genuinely believed Earth's people would be better off. And, frankly, humans in [[Anime/MazingerZ the]] [[Anime/GreatMazinger Mazinger]] [[Anime/UFORoboGrendizer trilogy]] often acted like [[UngratefulBastard utter]] [[HumansAreBastards bastards]] and forced the heroes to ponder why they bothered.
* TheBladeAlwaysLandsPointyEndIn: It happened several times.
%%* BossSubtitles:
%%* BraggingThemeTune
* BrainInAJar: The [[BodyHorror Kedora]]. Creator/KenIshikawa one-shot "The Relic of Evil" revealed that [[spoiler: the Mycenae controlled their {{Robeast}} by grafting the brain of a soldier taught to destroy all non-Mycenae civilizations into a parasitic organism, and it fused with a robot, giving the Mycenae soldier complete control.]] They would show up later in ''Anime/ShinMazinger''.
* BreathWeapon: Great Typhoon. Great Mazinger blows a jet of wind from its mouth grill to blow the enemy away. It is similar to Mazinger's Rust Tornado, but without the rust effect. Many Warbeasts also had breath-based attacks, usually expelling out fire, acid or even poison. One of the seven armies of Mycenae Empire (the Reptilian Warbeasts) specialized in this kind of weapons.
* TheBridge: The [[AirborneAircraftCarrier aircrafts]] of [[BeneathTheEarth the Mycenae Empire]] had bridges fitted with the basic elements.
* BrotherSisterIncest: This is an example where the issue is avoided due to them being adoptive siblings. Tetsuya and Jun were [[ConvenientlyAnOrphan two orphan kids]] Prof. Kenzo Kabuto adopted. So they technically are family and in fact grew up together. However they are not related by blood at all, so nobody seems minding they are the OfficialCouple, and the issue is never brought up.
** NotBloodSiblings
* ButtMonkey: General Hadias's role in a nutshell, he only gets to use three of his warrior beasts in the entire series while the other six generals use much more and multicapable robotic types pretty much take over the second half of the show (although they are shown much earlier). However, he is the only general in the show to hold his own against the Mazingers in the final showdown.
** Similarly in ''Mazinger Z vs. The Great General of Darkness'', Dante is the only spectral type warrior beast while the other six classes have two members.
* CanonImmigrant: Great Mazinger later gets featured in the alternate retelling of the first of the trilogy, ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}''.
* CapedMecha: Great General of Darkness, obviously.
* CardCarryingVillain: DragonInChief Great General of Darkness (Ankoku Daishogun) was very clear about his goals: he wanted the ancient Mycenae civilization returned to the surface world and felt the light of Sun for first time in milennia, and he thought conquering the surface and wiping the whole humanity out was the only way to accomplish that. However, BigBad Great Emperor of Darkness didn't make clear that was his motivation. Then again, he was [[spoiler:Hades.]] It's a bit hard not being evil when you are a GodOfEvil.
* CaveBehindTheFalls: Venus A's main hangar is located behind a waterfall. Notice that the cave is big enough to house a twenty meters high robot.
* CharacterDevelopment: The characters of ''Mazinger Z ''had only the basics of this, but the ones of ''Great'' get a bit more fleshed out. [[spoiler: I.e: Tetsuya's jealousy of Kouji for being Kenzou's ''true'' son [[ValuesDissonance which make more sense for Japanese viewers than Westerners due to honor and blood line issues]], Jun being a victim of discrimination for being the daughter of a black man and a Japanese woman, Shirou's relationship with Kenzou himself...]]
* ChestBlaster: Breast Burn
* Myth/ClassicalMythology: It has an increasingly important role in the trilogy. Dr. Hell finding several HumongousMecha in the underground mazes of a Greek island has its basis on the Greek legend of [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talos]], the giant man of bronze that protected Creta. Gorgon's {{Robeast}}s resembled gods, heroes and creatures found in the Greek myths. And in later retellings of the story (Z-Mazinger and Anime/ShinMazinger), Mazinger-Z turns out to be [[spoiler:Zeus]] and Emperor of Darkness becomes [[spoiler:Hades.]]
* ClimacticVolcanoBackdrop: One battle between Great Mazinger and Marquis Janus took place in Janus' VolcanoLair (in GosakuOta manga). As Tetsuya battled Janus and her troops, the volcano erupted and vomited lava, rocks and cinders, walls crumbled down and the place collapsed around them.
* ClothingDamage: Jun Hono suffered from this more often than Sayaka (much to her disliking).
* CombiningMecha: The Mecha Expansion Pack Augment type. Great Mazinger is powered by a little aircraft (Brain Condor) docking on his head. And later it got a second JetPack, the Big Booster.
* ConvectionSchmonvection: Right like in the first series, many battles happened near volcanoes or IN volcanoes, and Tetsuya was protected from the asphyxiating heat, toxic fumes and other dangers by Great Mazinger's.
* CoolAirship: Mykeros and Demonika, Mycenae Empire flying fortresses and airborne carriers.
** FaceShip: Demopnika's frontside resembled the square, long snout of a mammalian beast. Mykeros had multiple faces built along its entire perimeter in reality were gates to launch the {{Robeast}}s.
* {{Crossover}}: Out of all 70's anime based on Dynamic Productions mangas ''Great'' has the biggest number of crossovers - one with ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer'', one with ''Manga/GetterRobo'', one with ''Getter Robo G'' and one with ''Getter Robo G'' and ''Grendizer'' at the same time.
* {{Cyborg}}: Prof. Kenzo Kabuto and Archduke Gorgon. And if you keep in mind the Warrior Monsters were bio-mechanical HumongousMecha were controlled by the brain of a Mycenae soldier grafted into it, then you have to that series' {{Robeast}}s were giant cyborgs.
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: It is both played straight and subverted:
** Kenzo's sons, Kouji and Shiro, grew up believing their parents had died from a laboratory experiment that went wrong. [[spoiler:However, Kenzo's father saved his son's life by turning him into a cyborg. Neither of them told Kouji and Shiro he was alive because Kenzo was building a HumongousMecha to repel the Mycenae invasion they predicted, and train its pilot. And both his father and he wanted to shield Kouji and Shiro from danger and psychological shock.]] It was not a bad reason, even if it was somewhat weak because Juzo was also building a HumongousMecha as he raised them, even if he did hire a maid because he was so absent. [[spoiler:When Kenzo revealed the truth to his sons, it took a long while for Shiro to forgive him, though Kouji forgave him right away.]]
** It is subverted with Kouji and Shiro's mother in the original series. In episode 90 from ''Anime/MazingerZ'', their mother appeared in the Institute, revealing she was alive and asking meeting her sons before telling them why she let them believe she was dead during years. Shiro was happy of getting his mother back, but Kouji was distrustful. [[spoiler:It turned out that Kouji was right. Their mother was truly dead and that woman was a cyborg fabricated by Dr. Hell to infiltrate the Institute and destroy Mazinger from within. So her "good reason for abandoning them" was false.]]
* DangerRoomColdOpen: The Fortress Of Science was equipped with one of these. It appeared for first time in episode 3, and the scene showed Jun dodging rounds of machine gun mounted on the walls as Tetsuya her training and gave -or better said, barked out- advice.
* DarkestHour: In the anime it happened in the last episode: the Mycenae bombarded the Fortress of Science, Kouji and Tetsuya were forced to fight separately, Tetsuya was defeated [[spoiler: and nearly got killed]] and Prof. Kenzo Kabuto [[spoiler:died.]] And in the GosakuOta episodes it was worse AND [[FromBadToWorse things went downhill]].
** Nevertheless, in that same manga the DarkestHour happened in one of the last arcs: Great Marshall of Hell blackmailed the Government into destroying the Fortress of Science, Great Mazinger and Venus A. The Fortress was blown up to bits and crumbled into the ocean, the heroes were forced to flee and hiding, and while they were seeking a shelter and lying low, the Mycenae army conquered Japan.
* DeathFromAbove: Great Marshall of Hell fabricated a massive lens of ice orbited around Earth and worked like a KillSat by focusing sunrays in one single point and blasting it with a massive, hot-melting [[DeathFromAbove heat ray]]. It appeared only in one of the manga continuities, though.
* DeflectorShields: The Fortress of Science was equipped with a deflective energy barrier that surrounded the whole building to repel the strikes of the MonsterOfTheWeek and raids of enemy ships and airships. Unfortunately, a strong enough War Beast could shatter the barrier by employing enough brute force, and the CoDragons were savvy enough to search and blow up the devices that made the barrier working.
* DestructiveSaviour: When Tetsuya, Jun and Boss fight against Warrior Monsters... usually the battlefield gets destroyed. And if it happens in one city... there is no much city left to speak of in the wake of the battle. However one GosakuOta episode showed if Great Mazinger did NOT stop the Beasts, there would be not even ruins left: the planet would be turned to nothing but rubble littering the scorched land.
* DetachmentCombat: Tetsuya several times detached the [[MidSeasonUpgrade Big Booster]] off Great Mazinger's back in midair so it flew towards the enemy and impaled it.
* TheDeterminator: Tetsuya. Not matter how hurt he is or how badly damaged Great Mazinger is, he will NEVER give up (because in his mind giving up would mean he would let his surrogate father down). A ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' {{Manga}} plays with it, showing he can not care less if he is outnumbered or hurt.
** '''Tetsuya:''' That's right... It's fine if you tell me... to fight... I'll keep answering with the same answer... MAZIN GO...
* DisappearedDad: [[spoiler: Dr. Kenzou was absent from the lives of Kouji and Shiro (raised by Dr. Juuzou), and that comes to bite ''everybody'' in the ass later.]]
* DistractedByTheSexy: Just how many times Boss ran into an obstacle because he saw Jun walking by and he stopped looking forward while he walked?
* DoingInTheWizard: In the Mazinger versus Great General of Darkness, a prophet warns Boss and his gang -and later Kouji and his friends- about the inminent Mycenae invasion. It turns out that [[spoiler:in reality he was Prof. Kenzo Kabuto, father of Kouji and Shiro, who kenw about the Mycenae for reasons having nothing to do with prophecies.]]
* DoomsdayDevice: Great Marshall of Hell loved to design and build them -right like he did [[spoiler:back when he was Dr. Hell]]. One of those devices -appeared only in the GosakuOta manga- was a giant, ice lens orbited around Earth and worked like a KillSat.
* TheDragon: Great General of Darkness (aka Ankoku Daishogun). CoDragons include Archduke Gorgon, Minister Argos, the Seven Mikenese Generals (mostly Julicaeser), and Marquise Janus (Gorgon's successor after [[spoiler:being destroyed by a Thunder Break in episode 22]].
** Dr. Hell as the Great Marshal of Hell takes over his position starting in episode 36 after [[spoiler: he dies in combat against Great Mazinger five episodes earlier]].
* DuelToTheDeath: The SwordFight between Tetsuya and Ankoku Daishogun is maybe the definitive example of the entire franchise.
* ElaborateUndergroundBase: Seeing SuperVillainLair example below.
* EldritchAbomination: Several of them showed up in the trilogy, often overlapping with DiabolusExNihilo: Great Emperor of Darkness [[spoiler:as well known as Hades]] (BigBad from ''Anime/GreatMazinger''), Gilgilgan (of the Great Mazinger vs Getter Robo movie), Grangen (of the Great Mazinger vs Getter Robo G feature), Dragonsaurus (of Grendizer, Getter Robot G, Great Mazinger: Kessen! Daikaijuu movie), the Bigbad of SuperRoboRetsuden (a {{Crossover}} penned by Creator/KenIshikawa featuring the most popular HumongousMecha of Creator/GoNagai)... and in the ''Manga/ShinMazingerZero'' manga [[spoiler:Mazinger Z itself.]]
* EveryoneCanSeeIt:Tetsuya and Jun. Unfortunately, Tetsuya was even more oblivious than Kouji. How oblivious? He thought Jun would replace him with Kouji in spite of: Jun barely knew Kouji; and she had spend the whole series trying Tetsuya noticed her.
* EvilPlan: [[GodEmperor Emperor of Darkness]]' plan is [[TakeOverTheWorld conquering the surface world]] so that [[BeneathTheEarth the Mycenae civilization]] can live above ground again.
* ExactlyWhatIAimedAt: In the ''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'' movie Tetsuya is fighting [[FishPeople Angoras]] and [[BigCreepyCrawlies Scarabeth]]. Tetsuya throws Great Mazinger's [[PrecisionGuidedBoomerang Great Boomerang]] and right after shoots [[BreathWeapon Great Typhoon]]. Both attacks miss, both commanders laugh and ask where he is aiming at... when Great Mazinger's boomerang slices them both from behind. As he is dying, Scarabeth -Mycenae army's best tactician- realizes Tetsuya had missed his boomerang throw on purpose, and he shot Great Typhoon to change the boomerang's trajectory. So he caught them by surprise and killed both of them at once.
* ExpositoryThemeTune: "I am great! I am Great Mazinger!"
* FaceRevealingTurn: Marquis Janus.
* FacelessGoons: Mycenae Empire's foot troops wear viking helmets cover his entire head.
* FallingIntoTheCockpit: Averted. Tetsuya and Jun were taught to pilot their machine wars by Professor Kabuto before their first enemy engagement.
* FemBot: Venus A, Jun's HumongousMecha. Diana A also reappears in the final episode.
* FinalBattle: It varies depending on if we are discussing the Creator/GoNagai manga, the anime series or the GosakuOta manga. In the anime version, [[spoiler:Great Marshall of Darkness sent several Warrior Monsters to attack the Photon Energy Research Institute as Demonika -his CoolAirship- stealthily approached the Fortress of Science. Kouji fought a powerful Warrior Beast but Tetsuya (who was irrationally jealous) refused to sortie to help him. Finally he deployed Great Mazinger, and Great Marshall chose that moment to attack. A Warrior Monster attacked Tetsuya as Demonika started bombarding the Fortress. Tetsuya was easily shot down and cut off reinforcements. Dr. Kabuto then commited a HeroicSacrifice to save him. After retrieving his corpse, Mazinger-Z, Great Mazinger, Venus A and Diana A regrouped and attacked Demonika together, blowing the Mycenae army up to Hell.]] The manga versions are similar, but there is a very important difference in the GosakuOta version: Tetsuya [[spoiler:commited HeroicSacrifice, self-detonating Great Mazinger to destroy Demonika and the Mycenae army.]]
* FinishingMove: Technically, the first proper one of SuperRobotGenre is [[ShockAndAwe Thunder Break]]. Unlike his predecessor, Thunder Break serves as both Tetsuya's most used and iconic weapon, and his finisher against most of his opponents.
* GiantEqualsInvincible: Played straight.
* GiantFlyer: The division of the Mycenae army commanded by Birdler were all giant, bird-like mecha.
* GiantRobotHandsSaveLives: It happens several times. Also, in the [[{{Crossover}} Nagai Heroes]] e-manga, Diana A -piloted by Sayaka- saved Jun's life when she got thrown from a [[CoolAirship flying fortress]].
* GivingSomeoneThePointerFinger: Great's trademark pose when using Thunder Break.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Kenzo Kabuto has a scar runs along of the left side of his head, atopping right above his eyebrow.
* GoodWingsEvilWings: Great Mazinger had two sets of wings: two red metallic wings unfolded from its back, and Big Booster (a grey JetPack docked its back. Big Booster wings were triangular and grey-colored). Several squads of the Mycenae Empire army were formed by animal-shaped, bio-mechanical {{Robeast}} (such like the Avian army or the Insect army), so it was usual seeing Monster Warriors equiped with wings of bat, bird or insect.
* GrandFinale: Kouji and Tetsuya's rivalry reaches a boiling point when [[spoiler:the Mycenae army attacks Mazinger and Tetsuya refuses helping Kouji. Finally, he gets talked into launching Great Mazinger, only to be shot down by a War Beast was awaiting for him. At the same time, flying aircraft Demonika appears and starts bombarding the HomeBase of the heroes. TheProfessor Kenzo Kabuto (Kouji's biological father and Tetsuya's adoptive father) commits HeroicSacrifice to save his adoptive son. Tetsuya suffers a HeroicBSOD, realizing his fear of losing his father has brought about his father's death, and Mazinger, Great Mazinger, Aphrodite and Venus combine forces to annihilate Emperor of Darkness' CoDragons and blowing up their fortress. And in one of the manga versions, Tetsuya committed another HeroicSacrifice to atone for what he had done.]]
* Myth/GreekMythology: Pretty much the theme of the main villains.
* GutPunch: In the GosakuOta manga the punches started when the Mycenae blew up a coast city after Great Marshall of Darkness replaced the former [[spoiler:deceased]] DragonInChief. In a few episodes the Japanese army threw an attack against the heroes and their HomeBase, [[TheProfessor Prof. Kabuto]] went through a DespairEventHorizon, the Fortress of the Science got destroyed, forcing the heroes to run away and lie low, the Mycenae burnt Tokyo to ashes, conquered Japan and crafted a KillSat, obliterating whole cities. Then you have the FinalBattle. The heroes were busy building a new HomeBase when the Mycenae army launch an attack. Misato [[spoiler:gets sliced in half]] in front of Tetsuya as he is unable to do anything, Mazinger-Z and Great Mazinger are trashed, Prof. Kabuto [[spoiler:dies to save Tetsuya,]] and in reaction Tetsuya, realizing it was his blame [[spoiler:commits a TakingYouWithMe HeroicSacrifice.]] The FinalBattle in the anime version was ''not quite'' so brutal, but in exchange you had [[spoiler:a scene where Prof. Kabuto dies in arms of his son Kouji.]]
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: Tetsuya's [[HumongousMecha robot]]'s signature weapon are [[RocketPunch its fists]]. Jun's [[FemBot robot]]'s weapons are its [[ChestBlaster breasts missiles]], [[EyeBeams optic rays]] and finger missiles.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Tetsuya was the one introduced the trope (combined with DualWielding!)in mecha shows.
* HiddenDepths: Tetsuya appears to be a simple superior and arrogant "second Koji" at first sight. After some way through the series, his character begins to be shown to be MUCH deeper than what it is at first, including a {{Deconstruction}} of the same character Archetype that he introduced in mecha shows. Consider that most of this pages entry are about Tetsuya and his characterization and you get the idea.
* HomeBase: The Fortress of Science was the place where the heroes lived and their HQ to fight the Mycenae Empire. It stood out in sea beside the Japanese shoreline and it could submerge -doubling like an UnderwaterBase-. Some parts of the building could detach off the remain and work like a submarine or a flying carrier. Mycenae Empire HomeBase was necessarily an ElaborateUndergroundBase because they were a civilization lived underground.
** It also was parodied. In the second episode, Boss' gang were looking for a HomeBase for his HumongousMecha. When finally they found one, Boss was pretty angry it was nothing but a rundown shack with one wall crumbled and holes on the roof.
** IslandBase: Marquis Janus' HomeBase was at once a CoolShip (it was mobile and could swim or dive underwater), an IslandBase (it was shaped like an island) and a VolcanoLair (an artificial volcano had been built in the center).
** VolcanoLair: Like noted above, an artificial volcano had been built in the center of Janus' IslandBase. Its eruptions could be set off and stopped at will. Often it was used to blast Great Mazinger with a rain of hot-molten rocks, debris and volcanic cinders in order to slow down its advance or hinder Tetsuya as he battled.
** UnderwaterBase
* HonorBeforeReason: Tetsuya is very hotheaded, and he will always refuse running away even when it would tactical sense making so. Great General of the Darkness also wanted challenging Great Mazinger to a solo duel to redeem his tarnished honor.
** And then it got [[{{Deconstruction}} deconstructed]] and FromBadTOWorse.
* IControlMyMinionsThrough: Great Emperor of Darkness was a GodEmperor, so he used Authority, Fear, Loyalty, Power and Divine Right. His minions were loyal and respected his authority because he had protected the whole Mycenae civilization when they were forced to hide underground, and because its power [[spoiler:(in ''Anime/ShinMazinger'' his real identity was Hades).]]
* IfItSwimsItFlies: Great Mazinger was also equipped to fly and swim, and faced the same problems its antecessor.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Big Booster was a JetPack with a huge, retractable metal spike. One of the Tetsuya's favorite moves was throwing the Big Booster suddenly and impaling his enemy when it was flying.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Tetsuya, very much. When you suspect your adopted sister will dump you for someone she barely knows, and at the same time get mad if someone questions your skills, you know you have this.
* ItsPersonal: Fighting the Mycenae army was not a personal matter for Tetsuya... until [[spoiler:Professor Kabuto]] died. THEN it became personal right away. In the Ota manga chapters, Tetsuya has a personal grudge against Marquiss Yanus after [[spoiler: she tore Misato in half in front of him.]]
* JetPack: Great Mazinger had a red JetPack folded from its back, and a second JetPack (Big Booster) docked with it. It was grey, with wide triangular wings, and was equiped with a spike to impale {{Robeast}}s. [[FemBot Venus-A]] also had an attachable JetPack, right like Mazinger-Z.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Tetsuya has been a Mecha pilot most of his life. He devotes himself to his job, loathes the idea of being just normal and is perfectly right with having to kill giant monsters. However he used to be a lonely orphan little kid yearned for having a father. When Prof. Kabuto told him he would adopt him if he was willing to train to pilot a HumongousMecha and defeat ancient bio-mechanical monsters from BeneathTheEarth, Tetsuya agreed ''gleefully''. Nevertheless, his obsessiveness combined with his abandonment issues, lacking of self-confidence and self-worth and a massively low opinion of himself ([[InferioritySuperiorityComplex that he tried to hide behind of a mask of arrogance and pride]]) led to many troubles and finally to a ''masive'' breakdown. Jun also jumped at the call, but she managed to get it more together than him.
* KillSat: Great Marshall Of Hell's giant lens of ice.
* KineticWeaponsAreJustBetter: Mazinger mainly used beams and rays, but Great Mazinger forfeited the {{Eye Beams}} and replaced them with swords and a boomerang.
* LatexSpaceSuit: The pilot suits.
* LavaAddsAwesome: One of the weapons of Marquis Janus' IslandBase was an artificial volcano built on the island could vomit rocks and lava when Janus needed.
* LostTechnology: The Mycenae technology. It was seen for first time when Dr. Hell foudn an army of giant robots in the island of Bardos.
* LukeIAmYourFather: Throughout the series, [[spoiler:Kouji and Shiro]] learnt [[spoiler:Prof. Kabuto]] in reality was their [[spoiler:father, Kenzo.]]
* LuminescentBlush: Sometimes, for Jun or for Tetsuya when he was not busy playing the ChasteHero.
* MadeOfIndestructium: Just like Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger is made of Japanium, a rare metal can be found only in Japan. However Mazinger Z is made of Super Alloy Z whereas Great Mazinger is made of New Super Alloy Z, which is even sturdier and tougher.
* MakeMyMonsterGrow: Marquis Janus- could change size when needed. However usually she turned her HumongousMecha into human-sized, so maybe it inverts the trope.
* MalignedMixedMarriage: Jun Hono is mentioned as having been bullied for being the child of a Japanese mother and an African-American father. This was especially notable for an anime during TheSeventies, when issues like racism were rarely discussed in the Japanese media at all, let alone in children's programming.
* TheManBehindTheMan: In ''Anime/MazingerZ'', Archduke Gorgon was apparently a Dr. Hell's ally. In the last chapters we learnt he was a DragonWithAnAgenda was working for Great General of Darkness/Ankoku Daishogun. Likewise...
** In the ''Mazinger-Z versus Great General of Darkness'' movie it is said the legions of Mycenae Warrior Monsters are commanded by Great General of Darkness. He seems to be the supreme leader of the Mycenae Empire. In first episode of ''Anime/GreatMazinger'' we learnt he is the supreme commander of the Mycenae ''army'', and he is under the orders of the Emperor of Darkness (also known like [[spoiler:Hades]]).
* MidairCollision:
** In the ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer tai Anime/GreatMazinger'' feature, ''[[Anime/MazingerZ Kouji Kabuto]]'' and ''[[Anime/UFORoboGrendizer Duke Fleed]]'' shot a [[{{Robeast}} Vega Beast]] down. It crashed down into the -previously heavily damaged- enemy spacecraft, blowing it up.
** Right before his final duel against [[TheDragon Great General of Darkness]] -in the Gosaku Ota alternate manga-, Tetsuya fought a [[GiantFlyer flying]] [[{{Robeast}} War Beast]], an AirborneAircraftCarrier and a VolcanoLair ''at once''. During the battle he picked the flying beast and hurled it against [[AirborneAircraftCarrier Mykeros]], detonating a huge chunk of the ship.
* MidSeasonUpgrade: Great Mazinger got the Big Booster (a JetPack increased its speed and was endowed with a retractable spike could be used to impale enemies with) relatively late in the series.
* MissingMom: Both, Tetsuya and Jun are orphans and their adoptive father was a widower, so that...
* MissionControl: Prof. Kabuto and the Fortress of Science's BrigdeBunnies provided assistance Tetsuya and Jun in their battles.
* TheMole: The Mycenae Empire had a mole infiltrated among Dr. Hell's henchmen, [[spoiler:Archduke Gorgon]], and [[spoiler:Marquiss Janus]] tried to infiltrate into the Fortress of Science once by pretending being an average human girl.
* MirrorCharacter: Proud of their skills as a warrior, protecting their kinds, yet prefer to show their superiority in combat towards their enemy, admires someone who can math their own skills, and many more to list. Yes, the only difference that Tetsuya have against the Mycenae generals, especially Ankoku Daishogun, is the fact that he is Human.
* MonogenderMonsters: Nearly all War Beasts were male. Maybe the only exception in the whole trilogy is Marquisse Janus, since her HumongousMecha was clearly female-shaped.
* NearVillainVictory: This series provides several examples. Two of them stand out:
** In the GosakuOta manga episodes, Great Marshall of Darkness sucessfully blackmailed Japanese army into destroying Great Mazinger and the Fortress of Science. The army bombarded the Fortress and stormed into the place before blowing it up completely, and the heroes were forced to flee and lie low for a while. Meanwhile, Mycenae army conquered Japan.
** In the last episodes of the anime and GosakuOta manga, the Mycenae army struck the Fortress [[spoiler:and in the manga, Marquis Janus traped Misato and cut her in half]], and attacked Mazinger-Z and Great Mazinger separately. Kouji and Tetsuya nearly got killed, and [[spoiler:Prof. Kabuto commited a HeroicSacrifice to save Tetsuya.]] The generals of the Mycenae army laughed. [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge Five minutes later they were not laughing]].
** Perhaps, to show how DarkerAndEdgier this series is, the first chapter of the manga that Tetsuya started becoming the main character already have this. Jun is kidnapped and become a hostage, resulted in Tetsuya being unable to attack, and even if he can, he cant see well thanks to the snowstorm. Its the victory for the villain for sure, had Boss didn't interfere during the fight.
* OncePerEpisode: In the same way and with the same purpose, Tetsuya shouted "Brain Condor!" and "Mazin Go". And Jun shouted "Queen Star On! Venus Go!" every episode after the third one.
* OldSchoolDogfight: Although AirJousting was the favoured way of aerial battle, there were several dog fights between Tetsuya and other flying War Beasts.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Tetsuya is serious, grim-looking and moody, and he seldom smiles. So when he grins, everyone freaks out and dons OhCrap stares. Mainly Warrior Monsters, since it usually means they are about of dying horribly and painfully.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: The Emperor of Darkness. He never left his throne in the Underworld, not even when [[spoiler:all generals of his army were killed.]]
* PapaWolf: It is arguable if Kenzo was or was not a good father. It is not arguable when one his older biological son was about of being killed he sent a HumongousMecha after the people was harming him. And when his adoptive son was about of being killed, he blew his assailant [[spoiler:and himself]] up. Therefore, you do NOT want to threaten the lives of his sons.
* ParentalAbandonment: [[spoiler: Tetsuya and Jun are orphans raised by Dr. Kenzou Kabuto.]]
* PrecisionGuidedBoomerang: Great Mazinger's V-shaped, red chestplate that shot a heat wave was also a boomerang could slicing through a whole {{Robeast}} easily.
* PromotionToParent: [[spoiler:Tetsuya and Jun take care of Shiro most of the time.]] Subverted because [[spoiler:they didn't know for a long while that they were his adoptive siblings.]]
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: The Mycenae. Many of them were warriors highly proud of their skills and eager for testing them, and their {{Robeast}}s were made by grafting into the body of a HumongousMecha the brain of a soldier indoctrinated to fight and exterminate all non-Mycenae civilizations.
* RazorWings: Great Mazinger's Great Booster.
* RedIsHeroic: Tetsuya's LatexSpaceSuit is red.
* RedOniBlueOni: Tetsuya and Kouji. Surprisingly, Kouji is the blue one, since he had matured somewhat in America and tried thinking strategically (not to mention having quite a lot of combat experience), whereas Tetsuya's jealousy turned him rash and impulsive.
* ReforgedIntoAMinion: Ironically Emperor of Darkness did this to [[spoiler:''Anime/MazingerZ'' BigBad Dr. Hell]] turning it into his newest TheDragon. It is ironical because [[spoiler:Hell constantly turned reforged people into his minions.]]
* {{Robeast}}: The Warrior Beasts.
* RocketPunch: Atomic Punch, later combined with ThisIsADrill in form of Drill Pressure Punch.
** PowerFist: And its fists are reinforced with cutters run along the forearms.
** HandBlast: Great Mazinger's Thunder Break. The HumongousMecha gathered lightning bolts from the atmosphere and blasted its enemy with it. Tetsuya came up with a bunch of variations: Great Mazinger shot a continued stream of electricity from its forefingers, launched lightning bolts from its open palms -or fingertips-, powered up its sword with it...
* RuleOfThree: It was not so blatant like in the first series. Still, three HumongousMecha fought the Mycenae. Great Mazinger, Venus-A and Boss Borot. Boss Borot was driven by three pilots: Boss, Nuke and Mucha. The BridgeBunnies are three. Prof. Kabuto had three sons [[spoiler:Tetsuya, Kouji and Shiro]]...
* SadisticChoice: It happened several times.
** In one of the Creator/GoNagai manga chapters a Warrior Monster was holding Jun hostage. Tetsuya did not dare to attack the Monster, but [[TheProfessor Prof. Kabuto]] ordered him throwing his doubt out and attacking (in spite of Jun was his adoptive sister, BattleCouple and LoveInterest).
** In the GosakuOta episodes, Great Marshall of Hell -{{Big Bad}}'s second TheDragon- blew up one city and threatened with destroying Tokyo as well, unless the Japanese Government destroyed [[HomeBase the Fortress of Science]] and all HumongousMecha stored there. [[spoiler:The Government gave in and destroyed the Fortress. Great Marshall turned Tokyo into a wasteland nonetheless.]]
* SculptedPhysique: The Mycenae have bodies that are part organic, part mechanic.
* ShockAndAwe: Thunder Break, which is a directed lightning strike from Great's pointer finger. And later, Double Thunder Break which uses both hand to direct the lightning strike.
* SiblingRivalry: Tetsuya and [[spoiler:Kouji]] were a pretty tragic example. [[spoiler:Kouji]] was [[spoiler:Kenzo Kabuto's biological son.]] When Kenzo got reunited with [[spoiler:Kouji,]] Tetsuya believed his father would forget about him now his son by blood was back. He got ''very'' jealous and argued and fought with his adoptive brother about anything and everything, determined to prove to their father that he was the better than [[spoiler:Kouji.]] Unfortunately, his jealousy and his bickering caused [[spoiler:Kenzo's death.]] He suffered a FreakOut cause it.
* SiblingTeam: Tetsuya and Jun, being adoptive siblings, combined this trope with BattleCouple. Also, Tetsuya and [[spoiler:Kouji]] when they fought together.
* {{Sizeshifter}}: Marquis Janus could change size, although she -and her HumongousMecha- became smaller instead of bigger ({{Justified|Trope}} since she was a spy and by dwarfing her mecha to human size she could blend between humans), so maybe it invers the trope.
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism: Even though it is darker and more cynical than ''Anime/MazingerZ'', this series is still plenty idealistic. Only mustering all of their courage, heroism, unwillingness to give up and belief in the humanity, he heroes were able to carry forward and win.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Jun Hono was the only female character between the heroes (and Marquiss Janus the only female member of the Mycenae high command. Then again, the remainder members were humans whose brains had been grafted into HumongousMecha, so it was hard telling). That changed during the last chapters, when Sayaka was BackForTheFinale and the male to female ratio became 3:2. In the GosakuOta manga, Misato again was a recurring character in the last arcs, so the ratio became 3:3.
* SnipingTheCockpit: In the Mazinger trilogy aiming for the cockpit (clearly visible in Mazinger-Z and Great Mazinger) is a common tactic constantly employed by savvy villains... and the army when the Government turns on the heroes (which also is an alarmingly common occurrence). In fact, it happened in the first Mazinger-Z manga chapter. And in a Anime/GreatMazinger manga episode, a Warbeast is holding Great Mazinger still as Marquis Janus orders to snipe the cockpit. However, the likewise savvy HumongousMecha builders had the cockpits specially reinforced to protect the pilot.
* SpeechImpairedAnimal: Bakarasu was a raven ("Bakarasu" roughly means "Dumb crow") Boss and his gang used as a lookout or a messenger. In return, Bakarasu mocked Boss, annoyed him and drove him mad. Bakarasu strangely could talk -and laugh, usually at Boss-, and theoretically it worked alongside Boss, Nuke and Mucha, but in reality it did whatever it pleased. It only had one appearance in ''Anime/MazingerZ'' (episode 69), but he showed up in several ''Anime/GreatMazinger'' episodes.
* StayInTheKitchen: Often Tetsuya will taunt Jun saying if she can't put up with their harsh training then she should stay in the kitchen. Jun's retort is always swift and violent.
* StockShoutOut : An inverted example. Reference and shout outs to Great Mazinger is pretty overused in suceeding anime.
** During one arc of the GosakuOta manga, Tetsuya had to fight nine Mass-Production Great Mazingers were invading the Fortress of Science. Considering he is an arrogant {{HotBlooded}} AcePilot with huge confidence issues, is not a bad guy -he may be even nice- but is a jerk when he is angry... [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Does it remind you of anyone else?]]
* SuperVillainLair: since the villains were an subterranean empire, their base was Emperor of Darkness' palace, and it counted like an ElaborateUndergroundBase.
* SwordFight: Great Mazinger was the first HumongousMecha used swords like weapon (even before ''Anime/VoltesV'' or ''Anime/GoLion''). Tetsuya was quite profficient using them, and he even did DualWield. Naturally he had several sword duels throughout the series, the most famous and most fondly remembered against Badass TheDragon Great General of Darkness.
* TagalongKid: Shiro Kabuto, right like in the original series.
* TailSlap: Several Warrior Monsters (such like the whole Reptilian Warrior Beasts division) were endowed with powerful tails, capable to hit or coil around the enemy and strangle it. Often they had some weapon attached or shot missiles, acid or poison.
* TakeOverTheWorld: The Mycenae were an ancient civilization had been forced to survive underground for millennia. BigBad and PhysicalGod Emperor of Darkness and TheDragon Ankoku Daishogun wanted to return to the surface world and let their people enjoy sunlight, fresh air and clean water, and they thought take over the world was the only way to achieve that.
* TheTeamNormal: Boss and his gang -Nuke and Mucha-, right like they were in the original series.
* TenMinuteRetirement: From all possible times, TheHero did this during the GrandFinale. Tetsuya had grown so jealous of Kouji, falsely believing everyone were going to replace him with Kouji and forget about him (for all his bluster, he ''has'' issues). Telling his attitude bit him in the butt is a gross understatement.
* TechnicianVersusPerformer: Koji and Tetsuya has a dinstinct way to pilot their own Mazinger. Koji is the Technician, who uses his weapons in normal way, such as Mazinger's Photon powered EyeBeam as a long range weapon, pure brute force and combine it with CombatPragmatism. Tetsuya is the performer who combines his own CombatPragmatism by using Great's wide arsenal of weapon in an unorthodox way, such as using Thunder Break as weapon infusion, Swords as Lightning rods, more directed version of Thunder Break, his surprisingly weird way of handling swords, and covering Great with the heat energy of Breast Burn.
* TelescopingRobot: Great Mazinger stored one sword into each shin, several cutters blades along its legs, and the buckle-like glass adorning its midsection in reality was a hatch opened up to launch a missile from. Oh, and two wings and a JetPack unfolded from its back.
* ThematicRoguesGallery: The Mycenae's Warrior Beasts, split in seven thematically-organized divisions: the armies of Superhumans, Evil Ghosts, Mammalian, Avian, Aquatic, Insect and Reptilian Battle Beasts.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Right like his predecessor, Tetsuya was prone to spout this line when he got angry.
* ThoseTwoGuys: Nuke and Mucha, best friends and tag-alongs of TheRival and ButtMonkey Boss long before the start of the series. Before meeting and befriending Kouji Kabuto they were two average, ordinary high-school students, but after meeting him their daily life includes battles between {{Humongous Mecha}}s, fighting or fleeing from armies of {{Mook}}s, sneaking into enemy secret bases and basically surviving. Often they get -unwillingly- dragged -by Boss- in Kouji's adventures, and they provide with the rational counterpoint -and lampshading- to any stupid stunt Boss has come up with. Later in the series Boss got himself a Made Of Junk HumongousMecha and required that they helped him to pilot it -much to their chagrin-. In ''Anime/GreatMazinger'' their situation did not get more normal, that with the monsters from BeneathTheEarth invading the surface world bit and Boss demanding they help him to fight them like part of an absolutely helpless plan to woo {{Tsundere}} Jun Hono -LoveInterest of TheHero Tetsuya, whom Boss can not stand-.
* TheThreeFacesOfAdam: Prof. Kabuto is the prophet (reinforced in he [[spoiler:pretended being a prophet in a feature]]), Tetsuya is the lord and Shiro is still the hunter, encouraged by Jun to become a lord.
* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: Tetsuya sometimes uses his robot's sword like a spear (the first time he did that was during his first appearance!). However, he holds it overhead like if it was a real spear when he does that, giving more verosimilitude to the action.
* TokenMinority: Jun is a [[ButNotTooForeign half-black]] female lead *and* the love interest for the main character, reasonably impressive for a 1970s Japan kids' show.
* TokyoIsTheCenterOfTheUniverse: Subverted. For start with, the Headquarters of the Fortress of Science are not located in Tokyo on the Japanese shore. Therefore, the enemy feels not compelled to exclusively target and attack Tokyo. A lot of Japanese cities are destroyed, and in the Mazinger Z versus Great General of Darkness, the Mycenae army struck New York, Londres and Moscow before striking Tokyo.
* {{Tsundere}}: ''Anime/MazingerZ'' had Sayaka, ''Great'' has Jun. Both of them have little patience when TheHero goes stupid. Jun, however, also has her own problems to deal with...
** And this time, Tetsuya himself. He bickers a lot with Jun, but on the inside, he cares for her in more than brother sister manner (they are adoptive siblings in case you forgot).
* TwoFaced: Marquis Yanus has a human-looking face she uses to blend among humans and her true face, located on the "back" of her head. When she wants to switch to her true face, [[FaceRevealingTurn her neck turns one-hundred-degrees]] and her locks part sideways, revealing a demoniac face underneath it (She seems a demon or a [[{{Youkai}} Hanya]]). It is so nightmarish like it sounds.
* UnbuiltTrope: Tetsuya is not only similar, he is EXACTLY what [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Asuka]] is made to deconstruct, word for word. He is a HotBlooded AcePilot that is so arrogant that anyone that questions his skills will have a trouble with him. That same arrogance also made him bickering with Jun, and Tetsuya WouldHitAGirl even though Jun is both his LoveInterest, his BattleCouple, and adoptive sister. On the other hand, he has a massive inferiority complex, and his lacking sense of self worth and constant fear of being replaced became FAR more apparent after Koji's return, which caused so many problems that later resulted in [[spoiler:Kenzo's death.]]
** And, much like Asuka Langley Sohryu, he had to pay a very heavy prize to learn his lesson.
** And in one of the ''Anime/GreatMazinger'' manga back in the seventies he had to fight nine Mass-Production Great Mazingers... Yes, he is Asuka's template, definitely.
* UnexplainedRecovery: At the second-to-last episode, [[spoiler:the CoolAirship where Dr. Hell was escaping got blown up.]] Whatever got left from him after that explosion surely sank in the ocean. Nonetheless he showed up again in the last season, his body grafted into a HumongousMecha. One eyepatch covering his left eye was the only mark of the ordeal he had endured. Little explanation was given other than an statement of Emperor of Darkness had relived him and turned into one of his Warrior Monsters (and high commander of his army). It can may be worth mentioning many Mazinger-Z characters returned in the last episodes from the sequel, so maybe ExecutiveMeddling was involved.
* TheUnfavorite: Kenzo Kabuto had two biological sons (''[[Anime/MazingerZ Kouji and Shiro]]'') and two adoptive children (Tetsuya and Jun). Although Tetsuya was clearly his favorite, he still showed he cared for Kouji and Shiro. However, he got Jun completely neglected, treating her like a soldier, not making anything about her feelings of abandoment and her inner tensions, and he seldom shown he cared for her. It went so far that, before [[spoiler:[[KilledOffForReal dying]]]] after his [[spoiler:HeroicSacrifice]] he pleaded Kouji that he treated Tetsuya like his brother and took care of Shiro... but he did not mention Jun at all. Nonetheless, his attitude drove Jun to think she could not be dependant on someone else and to develop a very strong-willed and self-reliant personality.
* TheUnfought: The Emperor of Darkness, outside of an episode of a manga version of ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer'' and the ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsAlpha'' games has never been fought, which is odd considering he's the BigBad.
* UngratefulBastard: Tetsuya and Jun receive the same kind of gratitude and regard Kouji and Sayaka received for their world-saving efforts - none. Or even worse. In the manga episodes penned by GosakuOta -one of the Creator/GoNagai assistants-, Great Marshall Of Hell [[spoiler:warned he would blow Tokyo up unless the HomeBase and the HumongousMecha of the heroes were destroyed. People demanded the Government yielded... And they did. The Fortress of Science was destroyed, and Tetsuya and his allies were forced to flee and lie low for a while.]] During that time they had absolutely NO help to try and keep defending the humankind. They got many insults, though.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: Tetsuya and Jun. You would think the issue of them being adoptive siblings would be the main issue, but it is not. Tetsuya is an ObliviousToLove IdiotHero FULL of issues -he is the TropeMaker for BrokenAce, JerkassWoobie and InferioritySuperiorityComplex in HumongousMecha anime-, and he is obsessed with piloting Great Mazinger and fighting the Mycenae Empire because he thinks if he does not, his life will be worthless and his adoptive father will love him no longer. Hence, he is unable to notice Jun's ''very'' obvious advances and flirting. And Jun is a {{Tsundere}} with plenty issues herself and little tolerance for oblivious fools. So they keep their BelligerentSexualTension throughout the entire series.
* UnusualWeaponMounting: Great Mazinger's crotch is a missile launcher. Venus-A, of course, has TorpedoTits, EyeBeams and FingerFirearms.
* UnwantedAssistance: Jun was a ActionGirl with a worth-of-years extensive training like mecha pilot and martial artist. Likewise, Venus A was clearly more powerful than the ''Anime/MazingerZ'' {{Fem Bot}}s). During her first mecha battle she fought the Mycenae War Beast skilfully, gaining the upper hand several times. She could have won... if Boss would have not gotten in the way EVERY TIME she was about of finishing the {{Robeast}} off, telling her [[StayInTheKitchen girls should not fight]] and he would look after the Mycenae monster. Whenever she managed to shove him off, the War Beast had recovered and she had to begin again. The ironical part is Boss thought he was being chivalrous, charming and kind instead of an offensive and hindering nuisance.
* UseYourHead: Tetsuya is an even bigger of an offender than Kouji with this.
* VillainousBreakdown: Great Marshall Of Hell -TheDragon of the second season- also had several of them at the end of series, mainly in the GosakuOta manga continuity. His expression and subsequent fit when [[spoiler:Venus-A shot the flying fortress Mykeros down]] was particularly beautiful.
* WalkingSpoiler: Kenzo Kabuto.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Tetsuya was an orphan with a ton of abandonment and [[InferioritySuperiorityComplex self-confidence issues]]. He constantly and ''[[BloodKnight gleefully]]'' risked his life on a daily basis by fighting [[AbusivePrecursors ancient]], [[{{Robeast}} giant monsters]] from BeneathTheEarth so his adoptive father approved of him. Kenzo ''actually'' was proud of him, but he hardly thought of ''telling'' Tetsuya that, being more concerned with disciplining him when Tetsuya did or said something stupid (and since Tetsuya was a JerkassWoobie and an IdiotHero, it happened frequently). Because it, Tetsuya was always ''deadly'' frightened of losing his father if he was not good enough, and he got a breakdown at the end of the series when he thought it might happen.
* WhamLine:
-->Kenzo: "He’s crying. My son is… My son…! [[spoiler:Kouji Kabuto…!"]]
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Tetsuya and his hate of birds.
* TheWorfEffect: Tetsuya was established in both series as an excellent HumongousMecha AcePilot, BloodKnight CombatPragmatist and highly competent, HotBlooded Badass. In the reimaginings (''Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}'' and ''Anime/ShinMazinger'') how do you show the situation at hand is dangerous and the villain a serious threat? Simple. Pit Tetsuya against said villain and injure him or make him struggle. [[spoiler:This trope is also used in ''Anime/MazingerZInfinity'': How do you take the alternate Dr. Hell and his plan seriously? Watch him and his army turn Tetsuya into a BadassInDistress.]]
** Venus A was also used like a punching bag by the Mycenae Warrior Monsters when it was needed to show how terrible they were.
* WorthyOpponent: Tetsuya and Ankoku Daishogun. And its mutual. Some of the Mycenae general also view Tetsuya as a opponent that worth fighting against.
* [[spoiler:YouKilledMyFather]]: It happened in the last episode to [[spoiler: Kouji and Tetsuya]], and they went on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge because of it.
