Go To

In wiki technical jargon, "namespace" means a section of the Wiki's organizational structure. It should become obvious enough when reading the URL of the current page you're on what namespace you're currently in. For example, the URL of this page is '''[=https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Administrivia/Namespace=]'''. It is located in the '''Administrivia''' namespace.

Tropes belong in the '''Main''' namespace. Because Main is the default namespace, you don't have to do anything special when writing Administrivia/{{Wiki Word}}s to link to them.

To link to pages in another namespace, format them like this:
->[=Namespace/PageTitle=]

or for single-word titles:
->[=Namespace/{{Title}}=] e.g. Film/{{Avatar}}.

The [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/articlecount.php Article Count]] page lists the currently-used namespaces and how many pages are in each. The [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns= Namespace Index]] shows which pages use a particular namespace (enter the namespace after the = sign). Moderators can set some namespace specific functions on [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/mod_namespace_config.php Namespace Config]]; regular tropers can see the settings. What follows is a general breakdown.

See also SubWiki for sections of the site with their own namespaces.

[[folder:Media Namespaces]]
Things that are not {{trope}}s, {{index|Index}}es, {{genre}}s, or [[AmbiguityIndex disambiguation pages]] do not go in the Main namespace. Instead, media have the following namespaces:

[[folder:Subpage Namespaces]]
These are namespaces whose pages relate to and link directly to a Main or Media page. They contain info about the trope or work that would be too much to fit in the main page and are linked to them by the little icons at the top of the page under the search bar.
* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=Analysis Analysis/]] -- Complex [[{{Analysis}} analyses]] of a work that don't fit well in a paragraph or elaborations that would derail a trope description.
* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=Characters Characters/]] -- [[CharacterSheets Lists of characters]] in a work and the tropes associated with them. These are an optional split option for works with lots of characters. (The [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=CharacterSheets CharacterSheets/]] namespace is used for genre-based lists of these pages.)
* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=DerivativeWorks DerivativeWorks/]] -- Indexes for works based on PublicDomain works.
* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=FanficRecs FanficRecs/]] -- Troper-approved FanFicRecommendations for a series.
* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=FanWorks FanWorks/]] -- Indexed subpages that hold an index for the fan works of a given work.
* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=Fridge Fridge/]] -- Pages for FridgeBrilliance, FridgeLogic, and FridgeHorror entries.

* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=Headscratchers Headscratchers/]] -- Things about a work that puzzle you and make you [[Headscratchers/HomePage scratch your head]].
* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=ImageLinks ImageLinks/]] -- Links to extra images that wouldn't fit on the main page can go on the ImageLinksWiki entry.
* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=Laconic Laconic/]] -- [[LaconicWiki This namespace]] defines tropes and works as briefly as possible, while still remaining clear and understandable. "Clever" is great; "Clear" is ''vital''.

* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=Quotes Quotes/]] -- Each page is allowed one, maybe two quotes at the top. To keep pages from overflowing with competing quotes, the QuotesWiki is the place for the ones that don't fit as a lead-in for the article.

* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=Trivia Trivia/]] -- Same idea as the Quotes but for stuff about the production of a work that aren't tropes ''in'' the work. A story about why a film was in DevelopmentHell for so long, for example, is interesting {{Trivia}}, but not a trope.
* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=WMG WMG/]] -- WildMassGuessing: the place where EpilepticTrees grow and wild theories about works are shared. Has spawned its own memes on this wiki - you wouldn't ''believe'' how many people are secretly [[Series/DoctorWho Time Lords]], for example.
* [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/namespace_index.php?ns=YMMV YMMV/]] -- [[YMMV/HomePage YMMV]]: Here go things related to audience reactions and that can vary from troper to troper.

!!Forum threads about namespaces
Of course, namespaces need some maintenance and that is provided by three forum topics: [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13292464700A22187400 Media namespaces -- a battery of questions]] when you are not sure in which namespace to put a page, [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13089408750A90860100 Wick Migration]] for help in moving Administrivia/{{wick}}s between namespaces and [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13345901180A51310200 Suggesting new namespaces]] to propose new namespaces.
