* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: It can seem horribly cliche nowadays -- not least because it's adapting ''Theater/RomeoAndJuliet'', which itself underwhelms many readers who find it trite, shallow, and immature.

How does any of that apply specifically to gays or lesbians? That's extremely vague and general description of generic marriage vows.
* HilariousInHindsight: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A0fVWomF90 The make-believe wedding scene from the film.]] Even the lyrics of "One Hand, One Heart" say, "Make of our lives one life, / Day after day, one life. / Now it begins, now we start / One hand, one heart-- / Even death won't part us now." The same can also hold true of gays and lesbians today, now that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled for marriage equality nationwide as of June 26, 2015.

Added "Hilarious in Hindsight" and the source link.
* FauxSymbolism: The virginal Maria wears a white dress to her first dance, but a red one following the loss of her virginity to Tony. Also, in the final scenes, she's wearing a black shawl around her head. Probably representing her mourning for her brother, but it comes in handy when she has to mourn Tony as well.

** NotHisSled: Unlike [[Theatre/RomeoandJuliet Juliet]], Maria lives.

Added DiffLines:
* NightmareFuel: 'Cool' in the film is a little unsettling to watch, especially with the multiple shots of all the Jets coming towards the camera, and the dancing makes them seem a tad unhinged, especially with the intermittent 'POW!'s.

unfortunate implications need citations
* UnfortunateImplications: The 2009 revival of the musical on Broadway had the Sharks singing and speaking in Spanish when among themselves -- which adds to the realism, right? Except... that the most popular number that the Sharks sing, "America," is still sung totally in English, and the song "Un Hombre Asi/A Boy Like That" starts out in Spanish when Anita is singing of her hatred and desire for vengeance, and then turns to English when Maria sings about love, forgiveness, and self-sacrifice.

* WTHCastingAgency: For a part of a Puerto Rican in a musical, a Russian-American was cast, who couldn't sing (okay, NatalieWood actually could sing, but she wasn't good enough for this movie).

Harsher In Hindsight "Note that if the event in question is something inevitable, such as people dying, that's not necessarily this trope. Everyone dies eventually, as far as we know. It would be this trope if the death had some link to how they appeared on screen."
* HarsherInHindsight: In the play Tony dies but Maria lives. In real life, NatalieWood, who played Maria most famously in the 1961 film version, died relatively young while the rest of the cast lived on.
