** The scene where the two baggage handlers (one played by Creator/AlFranken) laugh at [[spoiler: Beeks]] [[BlackComedyRape being molested]] by the gorilla was already a case of CrossesTheLineTwice. But after Franken received numerous sexual misconduct allegations in December 2017 [[note]][[RoleEndingMisdemeanor which eventually led him to resign from his Senate seat]][[/note]], the scene definitely feels more awkward.

* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: ALWAYS re-aired in Italy during the Christmas Eve of its - although vague - Christmas theme... [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar despite the Precision F Strike and Fan Service tropes listed in the main page.]] To the point that Italians joke about "it's not Christmas without Trading Places".

* [[RealLifeWritesThePlot The Plot Writes Real Life]]: In 2010, the "Eddie Murphy Rule" was proposed to prevent commodities traders from using nonpublic information, such as the [[spoiler: Department of Agriculture crop report depicted in the film]], to corner the market in the same way as shown in the movie.

* UnbuiltTrope: The 90s and 2000s would later feature lots of comedies where a JiveTurkey of a black man is made part of a white world and 'shakes things up'. In this film, there's less making fun of 'stuffy white people' and the black character actually proves to be a good businessman - fitting very well into the world.

* VindicatedByCable: The movie was a box office hit, but might have faded into obscurity, if not for constant replaying on cable around Christmas-time, even though the movie is not inherently a "Christmas movie."

** The music theme of ''Trading Places'' is the Overture to ''Theatre/TheMarriageOfFigaro''. The Creator/WolfgangAmadeusMozart opera is about a servant who outwits his master. As Louis leaves his office, he whistles the beginning of the aria "Se vuol ballare", in which the servant reveals his plan. Also, the movie's title has a double meaning. It not only refers to the main plot in which two men are forced to switch lives, but also to the climax, which plays out at the New York Mercantile Exchange: a trading place.
