** Ryoma. Some really like him as he is cute and a good player (it's debatable if this is thanks to the more sympathetic portrayal in the anime), others consider him a GodModeSue SmugSuper DesignatedHero, and there's also the small portion that just ignores him in favor of the other characters.

* GodModeSue:
** Ryoma is very frequently accused of being one of these by his anti-fans. When a 12 year old boy is already a 4 time tennis champ (in the US) it's kinda hard not to see it. But still, lots of the accusations come from rabid Atobe and/or Rikkaidai fans... who then go and make them Mary Sues and try to pass them as BetterThanCanon.
** Other character who have been given the GodModeSue ball at one point or another are Yukimura, Fuji, Tezuka, Sanada, Atobe and Kevin Smith from the anime.
** Also there's Ryoga, who counts as a straight up MartyStu: He is Ryoma's older brother (it's explained he is adopted, because his mother died and Nanjiro took him in), he is better than Ryoma at Tennis and his first appearance in the movie showcases him doing awesome stuff (was hired by a wealthy man to play tennis on his team, played tennis against Ryoma on a sinking ship, and not only survived, but he also got away on a jetski to the sunset). His popularity was so big, that not only he appeared again in the [=OVAs=], but Konomi also made him a CanonImmigrant by including him in New Prince of Tennis.

* LauncherOfAThousandShips: ...Who has NOT been paired up with either Keigo Atobe, Tezuka Kunimitsu and Shuusuke Fuji in fanfiction and doujinshi, people? Sakuno also verges on the trope, since she's often used as a PossessionSue by some fangirls.

* RootingForTheEmpire: Many fans actively bash Seigaku for being "too overpowered" or just less interesting than the rival teams. Often, merely because it's the team that Echizen belongs to.

** Sakuno's manga incarnation. Lots of people who don't stomach her in the anime adore her in the manga. Conversely, other people bash her YamatoNadeshiko manga self and call her a PuritySue or RelationshipSue, while saying that her ShrinkingViolet anime self is a more realistic portrayal of girls her age.

*** Replacing Hiyoshi Wakashi with a new character, Egate Mcleod Higaki, who was a villain GodModeSue, even better than Atobe. On the same page, Sakuno was replaced by Higaki Shion, who was Egate's CuteMute sister. Also the inverted AgeLift and AdaptationalAttractiveness of coach Ryuzaki Sumire (played here by Hitomi Shimatani), making her Nanjiro's kohai and demoting her role to the background.

** For the Live-Action film, even if the film adaptation did or not an AgeLift, it was an abuse of Suspension of Disbelief the casting of RIKIYA as Egate Mcleod Higaki. You can seriously reassure the guy looks 15-19? That's also applied for the cameos of the rivals, many Tenimyu actors.

* DudeNotFunny: Even thought the anime has added more context to some "questionable" scenes in the manga, those originally were:
** Ryoma . While it was supposed to get a laugh at getting some HumblePie, many of the readers actually found it reprehensible coming from Ryoma, TheHero of the story.
** Koharu and Yuuji's gay jokes on court to throw Momoshiro and Kaidoh off, which a significant part of the fandom took as a very offensive take of homosexual men instead of the intended parody of the Fanservice HoYay.

Added DiffLines:

* AmericansHateTingle: Played a bit in Latin America: While it does has its fans in that region, the fact the tennis sport itself (along with golf as well) is normally considered as an elitist sport normally reserved for the filthy rich makes really hard to empathize for Latin American viewers with the cast.

** Kirihara counts as well. He's been paired with his whole team, half of Seigaku, half of Hyoutei and with a bunch of of other characters from just about any team. If they've interacted, they have been shipped.

** Also Fans gathered to lay flowers infront of a big mosaic of Atobe, entirely made out of chocolate.

* BaseBreaker: Ryoma, Atobe, Horio, and to a lesser extreme Sakuno.

** Atobe. He is a great rival with an AwesomeEgo, good looks and insanely rich, while others despise him for being a arrogant MartyStu.
** Horio. Just your regular TagalongKid or an annoying load with a big mouth.
** Also Sakuno
to a lesser extreme Sakuno.extent. She is either bland, too girly and shy to be with Ryoma, or a very needed female character in a series full of guys who is loyal and a good foil to Ryoma.

** An doesn't have it THAT bad, but she still gets pot shots for "stringing Kamio along" and "playing with his feelings." Which brings up rather creepy UnfortunateImplications about how women should "owe" men love because they show open interest on them. (or for that matter, anyone owing anybody else love in such circumstances.)
