* {{Misblamed}}: Some detractors of the first film dismissed the [[spoiler:jawless Yoko]] scene as being an example of Americans [[BloodierAndGorier making the movie gorier]] than the Japanese version just for the sake of it... apparently unaware that the scene is a recreation of a scene from ''Ju-on: The Curse'' in which the same thing happens to [[spoiler:Kanna]].

* IAmNotShazam: There is a surprising amount of people who apparently don't know Kayako's name and instead refer to her as "The Grudge" or "The Grudge Girl".

* TearJerker: Karen mourning Doug in the first movie.
** The scene in the second movie where Aubrey goes to Karen and Doug's apartment the day after witnessing Karen's death. Aubrey glances around the apartment, eventually looks over Karen's collection of framed photos, and breaks down sobbing as her sister's death suddenly hits her.
** [[spoiler:Aubrey's]] death is also pretty sad, especially when [[OneWomanWail combined with the soundtrack]]. There's also the tragic implication that [[spoiler: she is hearing Toshio being killed]].
*** It hits the creep and sad factor when [[spoiler: Kayako approaches her, looking ''normal'' for once and just staring at her as she dies, as if saying "[[AndIMustScream This is what you're forced to endure like]] ''[[AndIMustScream I am]]'']].
** Max's reaction when [[spoiler:he finds out that, while possessed, he killed Naoko]]. After [[spoiler:the possession wears off]], the poor guy just looks so broken and ''confused''... then [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone the realisation just suddenly hits him]] and he starts sobbing on the floor.

* ToughActToFollow: Although Aiko Horiuchi's performance as Kayako is legitimately creepy and unsettling, she had the dubious honour of taking over the role from Takako Fuji, who had played the role from the very beginning of the ''Ju-on'' franchise and was considered iconic in the role, leading to Horiuchi getting more flak than she deserved because of this trope.

** The creepiness of Lisa seeing Toshio for the first time in ''The Grudge 3'' is [[NightmareRetardant somewhat lessened]] by the fact that Shimba Tsuchiya is clearly too old and too tall to be playing Toshio, who was only eight years old at the time of his death.

* {{Sequelitis}}: ''The Grudge 3'' was not very well-received for several reasons: TakashiShimizu not being the director, at least one possible plot hole, the BloodierAndGorier nature, lacking the AnachronicOrder of the previous titles, Aiko Horiuchi replacing Creator/TakakoFuji as Kayako, and Shimba Tsuchiya being clearly too old to play the eight-year-old Toshio, among other things. It isn't lacking in genuine scares, however, and it does have its supporters.

* SignatureScene: From the first movie: the shower scene; the climactic scene with Kayako crawling down the stairs (carrying on the tradition from the Japanese films); the scene where Susan is claimed by Kayako in her bed; and the scene where Alex is menaced by a [[spoiler: jawless]] Yoko.
