* {{Sequelitis}}: ''The Grudge 3'' was not very well-received for several reasons: at least one possible plot hole, the BloodierAndGorier nature, lacking the AnachronicOrder of the previous titles, Aiko Horiuchi replacing Creator/TakakoFuji as Kayako, and Shimba Tsuchiya being clearly too old to play the eight-year-old Toshio, among other things. It isn't lacking in genuine scares, however, and it does have its supporters.

* FetishFuel: The way Kayako claims some of her victims (ie. [[spoiler:enveloping Vanessa in her hair]], amongst other examples).

* LesYay: There seems to be some very subtext-y moments between Allison and Vanessa in the second movie.

** Max's reaction when [[spoiler:he finds out that, while possessed, he killed Naoko.]] After [[spoiler:the possession wears off]], the poor guy just looks so broken and ''confused''... then [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone the realisation just suddenly hits him]] and he starts sobbing on the floor.

*** It hits the creep and sad factor when [[spoiler: Kayako approaches her, looking ''normal'' for once and just staring at her as she dies, as if saying "This is what you're forced to endure like ''I am'']].

** [[spoiler:Aubrey's]] death is also pretty sad, especially when [[OneWomanWail combined with the soundtrack]].

There's also the tragic implication that [[spoiler: she is hearing Toshio being killed]]. *** It hits the creep and sad factor when [[spoiler: Kayako approaches her, looking ''normal'' for once and just staring at her as she dies, as if saying "This is what you're forced to endure like ''I am'']].

* UncannyValley: Kayako is given an appropriately creepy walk via a combination of stop-motion effects and Creator/TakakoFuji and Aiko Horichi's talents at performing creepy, jerky movements.

She also has an expressionless face - you can't detect any emotion from her (even though she's supposed to be the embodiment of UnstoppableRage.)

* [[SurprisinglyImprovedSequel Surprisingly Improved Remake]]: Many feel the US remake of the first Japanese film is better. Considering the same director had a second shot at the story, he probably found ways to improve it.
