Added DiffLines:

* AdaptationDisplacement: The miniseries has gotten more notice and favorable reviews than the book in some circles, mainly due to having fewer TooBleakStoppedCaring plotlines and characters and consequently not turning as many people away.
* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: In the miniseries, is Simon's look of horror when he sees [[spoiler:Krystal drowned and tangled up in the stolen television cables that he dumped in the water]] a MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment, or is he just afraid of the consequences?

Added DiffLines:

* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: A few people saw the novel was written by J.K Rowling, best known for the ''Literature/HarryPotter'' series, and assumed this book would also be a good read for kids based simply on that. The book's premise isn't one that would appeal to most children and beyond that, it has a ''ton'' of adult content such as infidelity, drug addiction, strong profanity, explicit sexual references, abuse, sexual assault and suicide, to name some. Several reviews at the time of its release emphasized that ''The Casual Vacancy'' was ''not'' a children's book, although this has died off a bit after Rowling also became known for the adult-oriented ''Literature/CormoranStrikeNovels''.

Cut as per this.

* HarsherInHindsight: In the series, Barry Fairbrother, who is the hero, tells his nephew Paul that he "doesn't want to be riding a girl's bike". (Paul has a girl's bike, because his father Simon is a sadist). While Barry obviously doesn't want Paul to ride a bike to save his nephew from embarrassment, J K Rowling's latter transphobic behaviour makes this come across as a lot nastier.

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: With an extremely mundane premise and a cast of characters that range from extremely pathetic to pure evil, many have found it very difficult to become attached to any of the characters, and thus care about the story's conclusion.

Natter. And "kinda averted..." No.

** Looks like the election is over, and [[spoiler: Miles Mollison]] won the parish council seat! [[YourPrincessIsInAnotherCastle Wait a minute, what do you mean there's still a hundred pages left in the book?]]
** However, also kinda averted. Those who skip to the last page will see [[spoiler:Krystal rowing in a team again saying to "win it for Barry"]], with no implication that [[spoiler:she's dead and it's a flashback]].

** Krystal counts for most of the book, [[spoiler:at least until she negligently leaves Robbie by himself so she can have sex with Fats, and Robbie falls into the river and drowns. * TearJerker: Krystal, Terri and Robbie's story, Mary snapping about how lonely she felt while Barry was working for the community, Tessa Wall having to play middleman between Fats and Colin and getting nothing but forgetfulness from Colin and disdain from Fats in return [[spoiler: not to mention how Fats got to that family to begin with and Colin shouting he never wanted Fats in the first place clearly deeply hurting Fats]], Sukhvinder's problems, Andrew's homelife.

**
Krystal, Terri and Robbie's story, story. Terri's father was abusive, her mother left, the father raped her then burnt her with boiling oil. Not even Nana Cath could keep Terri safe from him, then Terri got mixed up with alcohol and drugs. Krystal and Robbie were taken from her several times, Krystal having to more or less raise Robbie who is at a constant risk of being taken away for good now. And this is just the beginning.
**
Mary accidentally getting a call from the newspaper about Barry soon after he died and freaking out, then later snapping about how lonely she felt while Barry was working for the community, community.
**
Tessa Wall having to play middleman between Fats and Colin and getting nothing but forgetfulness from Colin and disdain from Fats in return [[spoiler: not to mention how Fats got to that family to begin with and Colin shouting he never wanted Fats in the first place clearly deeply hurting Fats]], Fats]].
**
Sukhvinder's problems, problems. She's dyslexic, stout, has hair above her lips, her mother always lets her know how disappointed she is in Sukhvinder, Fats Wall bullies her every day in school and on the internet, and she's self-harming and suicidal.
**
Andrew's homelife.

** Sukhvinder, who is dyslexic, has hair growing on her upper lip, and is TheUnfavorite in her family. [[TheBully Fats]] ridicules her constantly at school, calling her a hermaphrodite and a lesbian, and sends her mocking pictures and messages on {{Website/Facebook}}. Her mother is emotionally abusive because of Sukhvinder's [[EducationMama poor school performance]] and her father, while loving, doesn't seem to expect much of her when compared to her siblings. Krystal Weedon, a former friend from her rowing team, turns against her when Sukhvinder's mother is accused of being the cause of [[spoiler:Nana Cath's death]], and threatens to have her gang beat her up. [[spoiler:To cap it off, Sukhvinder spends her nights cutting herself and wishing she were dead.]]

As a sugar wiki item, moved to its own subpage

* AwesomeMoments: Andrew standing up to his father (every time counts), the rowing eight's achievements, Barry having managed to keep Krystal in the rowing team, Parminder calling Howard out on his hypocrisy, [[spoiler: Sukhvinder trying to save Robbie and arranging a whole funeral practically all by herself, Andrew sending the post that started it all.]]
** From the series, Barry's speech at the parish council, and Krystal calling the police on Obbo after Terri was on drugs she got from him at the time of Kay's visit. Parminder having called Howard out counts as well.

* HeartwarmingMoments: The interactions between Barry and the rowing eight, especially Barry and Krystal, Gaia and Sukhvinder's friendship (to the point that Gaia yells at Fats for being a JerkAss.) [[spoiler: Colin and Fats reconciling might count.]]
** From the series, Barry bailing Terri out and his interactions with Krystal (like when he offers her an apprenticeship if she does her O-Levels at least in one subject) his nephews (Andrew and Paul) and Mary (the latter being HarsherInHindsight as his death is a ForegoneConclusion, see TearJerker).

** Paul as well, though he's not developed.as developed- he has the same turdish father who is especially hard on him as Paul is thin meek and prone to nosebleeds, he has no friend in sight and even his big brother Andrew is more occupied with his own problems (which to be fair do include getting back at the father making both their lives miserable).
