* SignatureScene: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1wWl_7wOuw The moment]] in the ''Top Gun'' episode, where the Nerd screams "ASS! '''FUCK!!!'''" after failing to land the plane yet again, has become the defining image of the character. The visual was used as part of the the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qorFHyOVSsc title card]] for a while, it's the main page picture for the show on ThisVeryWiki, and the memorable "ASS!" scream has been used in a few more episodes since its first appearance.

** The annual Cinemassacre Monster Madness (in which Rolfe reviews horror movies throughout the month of October) tends to be chock-full of these. For example, inn the review of ''Film/GodzillaVsMechagodzillaII'', he stated Rodan was trying to eat Baby Godzilla's egg. What actually happened was that Rodan was ''protecting'' the egg, and was a surrogate brother for Baby Godzilla.

*** He certainly comes across as very biased against dialogue-heavy plots in later ''VideoGame/MegaManX'' games, using them as the prime argument as to why he hates them. If you have played these games and were not bothered by this (or ''other'' flaws in them), the Nerd's quitting comes off as quite forced and/or petty.
** He has expressed several times how he doesn't care about point-and-click adventure games, finding them boring and tedious. When playing the Sega-CD ''Franchise/JurassicPark'' game, he quickly quits because he doesn't find dinosaurs around. When revisiting it, he passive-agressively points out how he "sucks" at them by repeatedly showing CombinatorialExplosion examples. When Rolfe was asked in an interview what game there is of which he doesn't understand the popularity, he mentions ''{{VideoGame/Snatcher}}''... because it is a point-and-click adventure game.

** He states that the [[UsefulNotes/NintendoEntertainmentSystem NES]] version of ''VideoGame/MetalGear'' not having the titular Metal Gear is akin to a Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda game not having the titular princess. ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaLinksAwakening'' makes that analogy worthless because Zelda doesn't appear in-person despite mentions of her in-game and in the instruction manual.

In this [[http://cinemassacre.com/2016/08/29/zelda-links-awakening-part-1-james-mike-mondays/ "James & Mike Monday" video]], James mentions that he had never played ''Links Awakening'' before 2016, which would explain the odd analogy he made in his ''Metal Gear'' review.

** There was also some RealitySubtext there, as it was also a subtle nudge to James' fans who complain about AVGN videos becoming less frequent.

* In the opening to his "Game Boy accessories" review, we see The Nerd lose a random game, before giving the finger to the camera, while spinning a fidget spinner.

** In the ''UsefulNotes/AtariJaguar'' review, The Nerd is attacked by the "Where did you learn to fly Lady, head thing" and later the Atari Jaguar ''logo'' for seemingly no reason.
* BileFascination: The games he reviews, of course. The show itself is pretty damn good. After both of their defeats, this is never brought up again.

** In the Sega CD episode, he stated in his review of ''VideoGame/NightTrap'' that the traps against the augers are "ridiculous", criticized bad timing of the traps and the augers' "wobbly" movements, and panning the graphics of "64 simultaneous colors" on a "12.5 [=MHz=] processor" along with the campy scenes that are so choppy, "it feels like I'm watching a shitty horror movie". Well, with the UpdatedRerelease of the game that's coming on UsefulNotes/PlayStation4 and UsefulNotes/XboxOne in August 2017 along with the extra features, {{deleted scene}}s and higher-quality video on a high-definition VHS format (which is what it would have been intended for the unreleased NEMO), we have a feeling that the Nerd might change his tune.
