* CrapsackWorld: Despite the whimsical moments of the show, the setting of SRMTHFG is undeniably dark. Shuggazoom City is essentially the only city on Planet Shuggazoom with anything resembling a peaceful environment when compared to the rest of the planet that's filled with monsters, deadly environments and evil forces. Not to mention the occurrence of malevolent/insane residents of Shuggazoom attempting to destroy the city or happen to be worshipers of the Skeleton King. [[spoiler: TurnedUpToEleven when it's said that multiple planets in the cosmos including Shuggazoom house ancient cosmic monsters that will essentially destroy anything they come across when awoken. The Hyperforce and a small regiment of allies seem to be the only forces that are attempting to fight against an overwhelming wave of evil sweeping the cosmos.]] The series is essentially LovecraftLite, and without the Hyperforce the show would basically be a CosmicHorrorStory.
** And that's not even mentioning Galactic Smash, where players compete to destroy planets - inhabited or otherwise - in order to earn extra lives. Although one of the two best players was defeated and [[spoiler: permanently killed]] by the Hyperforce, his rival and the rest of the top 10 are still at large...
** However, (a variation of) the Anthropic Principle (the real life theory, not the trope) suggests that either the is the first to be unleashed, or at least, any others have not dealt galaxy- or universe-threatening levels of damage, since we do not hear of any others. Furthermore, the abundance of HeroOfAnotherStory characters we run into (like Olliana, Mobius Quint, the Super Robot Amphibian Team from "Battle Brothers", the sisters from "Girl Trouble"), as well as the signs of galaxy-spanning civilization we see during the Pursuit arc (the truck stop housing the Lug, the space station(s) from "Girl Trouble", the various AdventureTowns - almost none of whom have heard of the Hyperforce) suggest that the universe is much bigger than Shuggazoom and the Hyperforce's "sector", and makes the idea that they are the only ones who could stop a attack/release somewhat laughable (although they're certainly among the best if not the best choices to do so, since destroyed several worlds offscreen). Also, the Commodore going after Shuggazoom in the first place, as well as some of his dialogue, suggests that other planets have their own defences, even if they're not as powerful and competent as the Hyperforce. These factors would seem to keep it in LovecraftLite territory.
*** And then the ending of "Wormhole" implies there's benevolent PowersThatBe, and the very fact that reality exists suggests that something is opposing the ...

* WTHCostumingDepartment: The Sun Riders. A superhero bringing back the cliche of wearing his underwear on the outside, a supposed fanservice girl who actually dresses modestly and never has any kind of WardrobeMalfunction, and a teenage boy who wears a bowtie with booty shorts and Mickey Mouse gloves. What else is there to say?!

** Mandarin apparently gets some kind of kick crossing this thing, because he does it three times. There's the above mentioned example, then after he's Face Heel Turned he [[spoiler: tortures his former teammates]] in an attempt to force their obedience, then later goes on to viciously [[spoiler: stab Antauri in the back of the skull]] with no fair warning.

Added DiffLines:

* FanNickname:
** "Skele-Mandarin" for Mandarin's Clone.
** When fans are referring to the Season 2 finale ("Antauri's Masters" and "I, Chiro") and the Season 3 opener ("The Savage Lands" two-parter) episodes as a whole, they tend to call it "The I, Chiro Saga".

* AudienceAlienatingPremise: Even those who know better not to believe the AnimationAgeGhetto can't help but find the show ridiculous, simply because of how flat-out bizarre it's premise is. Despite this, there are those who pushed past it and formed quite a cult fandom around it.
