** {{Brentalfloss}} put it best in his "[=RANTAlfloss=]" about ''MKT'', after showing how Mario gets his suit in ''3D Land'', and ''then'' asking PETA if they saw Mario skinning a raccoon alive.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: '''Tanooki Bowser'''. A lot of fans really wanted to see [[http://masabowser.deviantart.com/art/True-Tanooki-Bowser-image-280973465 this powered-up incarnation of Bowser]]. Many gamers were also half-expecting it, on an erroneous assumption that the Fake Bowsers' tails were {{Foreshadowing}}. Its not until 3D Worlds does Bowser consider using Mario's arsenal, and even then the Tanooki ability is still strangely snubbed by the game designers.

* ItsTheSameNowItSucks: A common criticism of the game; while its level design and innovative use of 3D are praised, it's also seen as taking a step backward from the lauded ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy'' games to return to the basic ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBros'' formula, with a thin ExcusePlot and an overall very simplistic structure.

** It's not the first time Mario gets to see [[spoiler: Peach getting kidnapped right before his eyes]], but this is the only time this hit him... ''[[HeroicBSOD hard]]''. To clarify, at the end of that level ([[spoiler:World 8, first Bowser castle]]), Mario ''doesn't even do his happy dance.'' Though he did seem more determined than shell shocked, meaning he's about to [[LetsGetDangerous get dangerous]].

* BreatherLevel: An unintentional example. In [[spoiler: 7-1]], if you have the Tanooki power up, you can get to the end of the level by jumping against the wall to your left after you jump from the ledge, then flutter your way over the fence to the flagpole.

** Gamespot slapped it with a meager 8.0, while other outlets such as IGN, Game Informer and [=GamePro=] gave it higher scores. ** ''WebAnimation/ZeroPunctuation'' gave the game a thorough drubbing, stating that while the gameplay and mechanics were sound, [[ItsTheSameNowItSucks the originality wasn't.]] To be fair though, [[WebAnimation/ZeroPunctuation Zero Punctuation's]] entire purpose is to [[AccentuateTheNegative tear into games whether they're good or not]], and Yahtzee has been known to be biased against Nintendo.

** Many Mario titles have a way to earn infinite 1-Ups. This one's no different, but what makes it so game-breaking is that the best place to do it is ''the second level''. Infinite jumps on a Koopa shell until time runs out will earn about eight hundred extra lives, and doing it a second time hits the {{Cap}} of 1,110 lives. After that, [[MeaninglessLives you'll never have to worry about lives again.]]

* InternetBackdraft: Not towards the developers or reviewers, but towards PETA, who attacked the game on the grounds that the Tanooki Suit promotes wearing fur. (They even made a parody flash game, ''Mario Kills Tanooki''.) After realizing how much of a hornet's nest they stirred, they tried to claim a JustJokingJustification, but not everyone's buying it.
