The infamous reveal wasn't an Ass Pull. Dr. Leingod flat-out explains that they angered their "Creator" by investigating the Time Gate. Luther is the creator (as in, chief architect) of the Eternal Sphere. Therefore, the game gives you ample warning. The only reason anyone complained about the reveal is because Luther was a game designer, rather than a literal god.
