* HellIsThatNoise:
** The loud buzzing sound that came with the live-action deerfly close-ups in the episode "Wormy".
** In "SB-129", Squidward travels through time and ends up in a blank white void. He remarks to himself that he can finally be alone... which is when the word manifests itself as a colorful caption. Then a series of disembodied voices start saying the word "alone", accompanied by more colorful representations of the word, until Squidward finally snaps and tries to get out. Just those calm, echoing voices that repeat the word "alone".
** The squeaky boots and Mr. Krabs.
** The voice of the drop of BlazingInfernoHellfireSauce in "Karate Choppers".

** [=SpongeBob=] gets this sometimes. Although he has been Flanderized into an annoying, obnoxious man-child, he can still be a nice guy, depending on the episode, yet some fans demonize him even when he doesn’t cause trouble.

** Plankton is also subjected to this '''AND''' DracoInLeatherPants. While he has done some genuinely bad things, there are those who make it like he's always acting so terrible and ignore the episodes where he's hardly villainous, if at all. Sure, he does bad things some times, but it's okay to notice when he's doing things like, say, saving Karen's life, competing more legitimately with Krabs (albeit, often gloating over small victories), showing that he [[EvenEvilHasStandards has standards]], or treating Squidward like an actual, valued employee. He's not wholly on the side of good or anything, but far from the monster his detractors make him out to be.

*** TakeThatScrappy: Case in point, this moment in "Truth of Square" with Patchy dissed by Triumph, the Insult Dog.
-->'''Patchy''': This is Patchy the Pirate, President of '''The''' [=SpongeBob=] [=SquarePants=] fanclub!
-->'''Triumph''': [[SarcasmMode Ooooh, your mother must be so proud!]] [[TakeThat Maybe you should consider wearing two eyepatches. That way, you wouldn't be able to see what's become of your life!]]
-->'''Patchy''': [[BigWhat What?!]]
* SeasonalRot: The show never was the same from Season 4 onwards.[[note]]When the show was UnCanceled in 2004, due to [[MoneyDearBoy the box-office gross]] of the feature [[WesternAnimation/TheSpongeBobSquarePantsMovie film adaptation]] (which was the intended GrandFinale to the show - season 3 had ended production back in 2002) made in addition to the high ratings the show maintained, creator Stephen Hillenburg notably changed his position in the show's production and creative director Derek Drymon left.[[/note]] Once it started back up, the show became much more grotesque compared to the earlier seasons - post-movie seasons have VulgarHumor, massive {{flanderization}} of various cast members (with some being flanderized into [[TheDitz ditzes]] at best and [[DesignatedHero designated heroes]] at worst), occasional [[BlackComedy dark humor]], [[NightmareFuel creepy]] NauseaFuel, and overall less charm.
** The general consensus is that Season 4 was when the rot kicked in, and Seasons 6 and 7 were the peak of the rot.[[note]]Most notably Season 6, with episodes like "The Splinter", "Choir Boys", "House Fancy" and "Truth or Square," although the season 7 episodes "A Pal for Gary" and "One Coarse Meal" are almost unarguably the two most hated of the entire series.[[/note]] Seasons 5 and 8 are... "''mixed''" among fans. The good episodes in them are generally more well received than ones from Season 6 and 7, but the bad episodes include some of the most reviled episodes of the show.[[note]]"To Love a Patty", "Atlantis Squarepantis", "Demolition Doofus" and "Are You Happy Now?".[[/note]]
*** In turn, many fans agree that Season 9 is a major improvement on Seasons 5-8, with most of the episodes being praised.[[note]]The exceptions being "[=SpongeBob=] You're Fired", "Squid Baby" and "Little Yellow Book".[[/note]] Even moreso improved after Hillenburg's return later that season.
** As many people have pointed out, there's no single reason for the show's DorkAge, just a number of reasons, not unlike why Music/TheBeatles broke up. It was mostly a combination of the change in staff after the show's revival, and its popularity causing Nick to have an [[AdoredByTheNetwork overreliance]] on the show, leading to larger episode orders, which in turn would force the production crew to rush out episodes and turn off quality control to meet deadlines.
** Even the Pre-Movie era suffered seasonal rot to some people. The latter half of Season 3 gave us only a couple of really good episodes and was the first time the show gave us several bad episodes (like "Party Pooper Pants", "The Great Snail Race" and "Krabby Land"). It's just not that noticeable because Season 4 started out a lot more consistent in it's good episodes.

** After suffering from TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter for about a decade, Bubble Bass has recently returned as a more prominent supporting character and more frequently appearing extra likely thanks to his enduring popularity with the fandom that grew up with the show.

** Bubble Bass was originally this, as he only appeared as a major character in a single episode before dropping off of the map entirely for years. Nevertheless, he's still one of the most iconic minor characters the show has ever had, and eventually grew out of this trope as the show began to employ him in a much more frequent capacity thanks to the fandom's love for him.

** Bubble Bass could've been a good ArchEnemy to [=SpongeBob=], but he only appeared in the series five times, the latest one being a cameo in "Larry's Gym". "Pickles" is the only episode in which he has a major role.

* ValuesResonance: As very well put by [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcHt9tW8oo0 this video]], the moral of "Ripped Pants" rings very true in the era of meme culture of TheNewTens. It teaches us that it is not a good idea to associate yourself with a single joke for the sake of attention, otherwise your "fame" will quickly fade.

** Mr. Krabs. While he was already something of a BaseBreakingCharacter in the pre-movie era due to his greed, his Flanderization in the post-movie era caused him to become near-universally despised, to the point where many fans just want to see him suffer [[KarmicDeath a truly horrible fate]], like he almost did in the movie. Recent episodes have seen his rivalry with Plankton devolve into making his life hell just for fun, feeding poison or rotten food to his customers intentionally for the sake of an extra dollar, or extorting and abusing his employees. The fact that he [[KarmaHoudini gets away with these]] at least 80% of the time doesn't . According to writers and the creator himself, Krabs is ''supposed'' to look as bad (if not worse) than Plankton himself. It's just the matter of [[KarmaHoudini letting him get away with it]] that they and the audience seem split over.

** Seasons 7 and 8 had more well-received episodes compared to Season 6... though that didn't exempt them from criticism[[note]]Particularly season 7, whose bad episodes, while not quite as frequent, are seen by many as worse than those from season 6 (most notably "A Pal for Gary" and "One Coarse Meal," almost unarguably the series' two most hated episodes[[/note]]. ** In "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV", Squidward, while dawning the Captain Magma costume, unleashes a magma attack from his head by shouting "[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1883_eruption_of_Krakatoa Krakatoa]]!" Not a lot of kids will know what this means unless they have a basic knowledge in history, geography, geology, and volcanology.
