* GrowingTheBeard: Fans of the original Raimi trilogy generally consider this to be the best installment, although a good number prefer the first film.

* OlderThanTheyThink: A lot of the complaints people voiced about ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderManSeries'', greater focus on romance over superhero action, the Hero irritating audience because he is not fully committing to a decision with his girlfriend (i.e. going back-and-forth between ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies and TheyDo and lapsing and backsliding as and when the plot chooses) originated in ''Spider-Man 2''. At the end of ''Spider-Man 1'', Peter decided that he can't endanger Mary-Jane since his superhero work nearly got her killed and brought personal trauma to Harry even if MJ returned his affections, but in the sequel he keeps sending her mixed-messages which she calls him out on, similar to the much-criticized "but those are the best kind" gag at the end of ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan''. Likewise the entire middle-act of the film has Peter out-of-costume and not being Spider-Man, which the film admittedly compensates with the epic Train Battle scene.

* RomanticPlotTumor: The Spider-Man trilogy was accused of this overall, but the sequel is the one with greatest focus on the romance. Peter Parker spends the majority of film out-of-costume, and worried about his romance with MJ, most of the film's drama is not really about Dr. Octopus and his Tritium experiment but whether the two love-birds can get together or not. Doc Ock's bizarre personality shifts, going from mild-mannered scientist, to a cigar-chomping tentacled bank robber and the way it might or might not be inspired by his tentacles is not fully explained or dramatized.

* TrueArtIsAngsty[=/=]DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: This is the most angsty of the films, with focus more on Peter's struggle to maintain a working personal life with his superhero activities. It's also the most critically acclaimed of ''all'' the Spider-Man films, including the latter films. It's also the ''least'' successful, box office wise, of the original films, and only beat (defeated?) ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan2'' out of all the films combined. A common reason most cite for loving it is the angst, while a common reason most cite for disliking it is the same. [[BrokenBase Depending on your view]], it's either well-written angst, or it's badly-handled angst. Either way, the angst is the topic that splits most on the film.

* DemonicSpiders: The mooks using PoweredArmor. They're strong, durable, and have weapons that can knock Spidey down for a few seconds. Even worse is that after you first fight them in the plot, they can show up when taking a civilian mission.

Even worse is that after you first fight them in the plot, they can show up when taking a civilian mission. The best of way of fighting them is to take advantage of their slow turn rate and punch them from behind, but multiple Powered Armor Mooks can make this a tough endeavour.

** Mary Jane gets engaged to J.J. Jameson's son, only to go back to Peter in the end. A few years later, we got ''Film/SupermanReturns'', in which Lois Lane gets engaged to Perry White's nephew, much to the consternation of many fans.

* {{Narm}}: The actors who were cast to play the extras for this movie hardly ever felt like they were natural human beings. The worst offender was when Doc Ock opens up the train car to take an exhausted Peter with him, and everyone who stood in his way gave a halfhearted "you're going to have to go through me" one-liner.
** Also, Doc Ock's tentacles having a built-in AI that speaks to him (words the audience cannot hear) would have been a truly creepy addition...had the film not have the tip of the tentacles open and close like mouths in a puppet-like fashion whenever they're speaking to him, which just looks goofy.

** When Peter sees a big-ass wall about to collapse on MJ from behind, he lets out a ''wail'' that is not only ''really'' over the top, but comes with a close-up of his face as he makes it, and to make it even ''more'' Narmful his voice cracks more than once in the (rather long) BigNo. It's not even a no, that's the [[NarmCharm best part]]. It's some awful, ungodly high-pitched roaring noise that escaped from the fires of hell and out of Creator/TobeyMaguire's mouth. [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=8hmOaKlDY1Q Take a look.]]
** '''AVENGE MEEEEEEEEEEEEE!''' [[BigNo "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"]]
** Rosalie Octavius's death. The metal in the window she's facing is attracted to Dr Octavius's man-made sun, causing the glass to shatter in her direction. She just stands there and screams. If shown in real time, this wouldn't have qualified as Narm, but it was in slow motion, with a very drawn-out scream - she also looks like she's smiling. The ''extremely'' melodramatic music certainly doesn't help, either.

to:

* TheWoobie: Otto Octavius, aka Doc Ock, full stop. The man tries to revolutionize recyclable energy for a better world, but his initial experiment ends in the tragic loss of both his wife and his credibility. Despite this, he tries his hardest to try to recreate and improve his device, but it's ultimately put into an uncontrollable situation where FailureIsTheOnlyOption. Oh, and his criminal activites? [[AIIsACrapshoot The mechanical arms attached to his back]] gaining sentience thanks to their advanced AI and the initial accident destroying their inhibitor. Probably the best example of Octavius at his Woobie-est would be his soliloquy at the docks:
-->'''Otto Octavius''': [[TheLostLenore My Rosie's dead]]. My dream is dead. And these [''his arms'']... ''monstrous'' things should be [[{{Foreshadowing}} at the bottom of the river]]... [[AlasPoorVillain along with me]].

* VisualEffectsOfAwesome: Doc Ock's tentacles, which were largely accomplished via practical effects, with each arm being controlled by a team of puppeteers.
** The shot of [[spoiler:Doc Ock's face as he falls into the water during his HeroicSacrifice was completely CGI, yet looks completely real. It was hailed by the effects team as the most realistic CGI face in film at the time]].
