Honestly, the show isn't really that dark. Stuff like Batman: TAS are much more so.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: ** How some respond to this. [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter Cute animal]] [[ChildSoldier soldiers]] fighting a war to [[LaResistance de-throne]] a [[MagnificentBastard depraved]] [[DangerouslyGenreSavvy genius]] who is resposible for [[OmnicidalManiac genocide]] of [[AfterTheEnd Apocalyptic porportions.]] And all of the [[DoubleStandard girls]] [[{{ParentService}} have boobs]]. ** There's the kiss between Sonic and Sally in "Hooked on Sonics". The second one, not the peck on the cheek with the faux PostKissCatatonia.

* CultClassic: It only got 26 episodes which made it the shortest of all the finished Sonic cartoons (even ''WesternAnimation/AdventuresofSonictheHedgehog'' got a good 65), and yet it was relatively well-received compared to other Saturday-morning fare at the time and maintained a notable fanbase since then, likely helped by the Archie Comics series based upon it.

* CompleteMonster: BigBad [[MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate Dr.]] [[EmperorScientist Robotnik]], [[DarkerAndEdgier unlike the version]] of him you'd see in other Sonic [[WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog cartoons]] (or the games themselves), is [[KnightOfCerebus much less pleasant]]. He is willing to deprive innocent creatures of their free will to get them to work for him, he is willing to turn formerly beautiful communities into severely polluted wastelands, and he doesn't show any remorse for any of his actions (in fact he almost sexually [[{{Sadist}} thrives on them]]). He turns people into his robotic slaves if they don't obey him; they are [[AndIMustScream quite aware of what's happening to them]], and morally object to that which their robot bodies are forcing them to do. There are episodes in which some robots are carrying on secret conversations with their loved ones, from before roboticization, only to double over in apparent pain before proceeding to attack said loved ones because of the control Robotnik has over them. [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness He even turns the ones who do obey him into robotic slaves]]. Occasionally turned on it's head, since Robotnik's overeagerness to cause suffering and misery leans him to border as a StupidEvil buffoon in later episodes.

TRS voted to axe Parvum Opus.
* ParvumOpus: Even the show's most devout fans rarely have a good thing to say about the Antoine shorts.

** Sally is either a poignantly developed ActionGirl and one of Sonic's best foils in the series ([[BetterThanCanon if not the entire franchise]]), or a bland, insufferable CanonSue that [[TookALevelInDumbass lobotomised Sonic]] (and to an extent the rest of the cast) for the sake of PositiveDiscrimination. Her [[SpotlightStealingSquad upgraded role]] in the Second season, as well as her continued legacy in the comic didn't help much.

* CanonSue[=/=]EinsteinSue: A common complaint concerning Sally. She existed largely as TheStraightMan to the main character, and to prove how his trademark "like the wind" ethic was in fact reckless and incompetent compared to her more cautious, meticulous approach. The fact she gradually absorbed spotlight and defining talents from other characters (eg. Rotor as TheSmartGuy) and thus became the most effective and versatile Freedom Fighter by a noticeable amount didn't really help in this regard. This is less prominent in Season One, where Sally has a more specified role to the team and could sometimes be arrogant and careless.

There were darker kids shows at the time. Batman: TAS is a good example.
* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: There was next to nothing like this show when it came out and it's fondly remembered by many, but as time goes on it's really starting to show it's age. The later success of continuity-heavy and dark kids shows like ''WesternAnimation/BeastWars'' or ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' that went [[WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids way further]] with their darkness means that many don't see this show as all that special.

** Fans are also completely divided over the more sinister interpretation of Robotnik, either adoring it for his [[KnightOfCerebus more effective and terrifying presence]] in the show, or abhorring it for him being a glorified GenericDoomsdayVillain with none of the charisma of the other Eggman variants.

* GettingCrapPastTheRadar ** In Warp Sonic, Sonic starts dropping a ClicheStorm of common idioms in vein of "is water wet?". He almost says "do bears shit in the woods?" until Sally cuts him off mid-sentence.

* FridgeHorror: Dulcy's non-sequiturs about her mom become tragic when you learn she's nearly the LastOfHerKind.

** Many fans of the current game series become irritated by the mentioning of the show, due to many fans' tendency to boast it's story and characters as superior to the SEGA canon.

* NightmareFuel: -->'''Robotnik:''' Snively. What color is my heart? -->''(Robotnik opens his putrid, rotting mouth wide enough to fit Snively's entire head in for Snively to look down his throat)'' -->'''Snively''' ''(terrified)'': I... See "Sonic's Nightmare" for the terrifying details. ** The robot double from "Sonic and Sally" could very well have been a roboticized Mobian. ** The glowing red eyes of Naugus against a black background in the finale.
