** Some consider Otto's death and passing of the torch back to Peter actually redeemed the character, as he [[HeelRealization realized just how bad he's been at superheroics and how Peter is much better at this than he is]]. Of course, there was also a AndThereWasMuchRejoicing from certain parts of the audience, but given the BaseBreaker status of the character, it was to be expected.

* BaseBreaker: [[FanNickname SpOck]] became one shortly after he was created. Some enjoy watching him attempt to be a super hero using MadScientist like methods while others just want Peter back. This only intensified after he became more of a {{Jerkass}} KnightTemplar.

* LoveItOrHateIt: People either like the new direction and find [=SpOck=] amusing, or absolutely detest it and all that it represents. There isn't much of a grey space, due to all of the BrokenBase and the fact that the main character is a BaseBreaker.

** Remember how Mary Jane and Otto-Peter went separate ways so that Otto wouldn't be [[QuestionableConsent considered a rapist]] for impersonating Peter Parker? This was thrown out of the window in Issue 22 when he had sex with Anna Marie Marconi - which would officially make him a rapist, [[http://douglasernstblog.com/2013/12/04/dan-slotts-superior-spider-man-body-snatching-rapist-confirmed-in-issue-22/ also according to Ernst]]. ** As mentioned above, while the first issue of the comic was generally well-recieved, it was also criticized by some for immediately setting up Ghost-Peter, the plot thread that would eventually get to undoing Peter's [[DeathIsCheap Comic Book Death]].

Added DiffLines:

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Otto as the "Superior Spider-Man" has gotten the strange treatment of getting both DracoInLeatherPants ''and'' RonTheDeathEater treatments from the readership. Was he in-fact a superior Spider-Man because he did a better job managing his personal and heroic life, even if it resulted in him [[KickTheDog Kicking the Dog?]] Is this a tragic tale of a villain [[HeelFaceDoorSlam unable to overcome his nature?]] Is Otto just an asshole who ultimately got hit with LaserGuidedKarma?

Added DiffLines:

* DracoInLeatherPants: To this day, despite how contentious the arc was, there are fans who legitimately argue that Otto was a better Spider-Man than Peter. His more immoral actions gets written off as the Ends justifying the means.

** Black Cat being turned into a full-blown villain out for revenge against Spider-Man for what Otto did to her didn't gained much positive feedback.

** There are those who feel that Otto became Dan Slott's Superboy Prime.

** There are those who feel that Otto became Dan Slott's Superboy Prime. After Issue 25, where Otto with the Venom Symbiote is being shown to effortlessly manhandle the Avengers (including ''[[PhysicalGod Thor]]''), this is cemented even further.

** The last two issues of the "Goblin Nation" arc have been criticized as featuring this trope. Specifically, that Otto gets off by means of a YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre speech to Peter and a HeroicSuicide without at least getting a [[LaserGuidedKarma well-deserved beatdown]] from Peter first ([[KickTheDog given his remorseless attempt to mind-wipe Peter]]). In addition, there are complaints that Peter was able to make amends with most characters much too quickly.

* VillainSue:
** Otto was criticized as being no better than most criminals in the Marvel Universe and ''still'' retaining public approval. This isn't helped by Slott's own stance on the story.
-->[[http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=48440/ "When you look at the rankings, I’m sorry but everything he’s done from the “Dying Wish” arc of “Amazing Spider-Man” on moves him up in the rankings. Norman Osborn is like, “Ha! I threw your girlfriend off a bridge.” And Doc Ock could reply, “You know what? I ripped his brain out of his skull, put my mind inside, and wore him like a meat puppet! Top that!” [Laughs] So at some point you go, “You know, I think Doc Ock might just be the #1 Spider-Man villain of all time.” It’s like, “Suck it Goblin!”"]]
** After Issue 25, where Otto with the Venom Symbiote is being shown to effortlessly manhandle the Avengers (including ''[[PhysicalGod Thor]]''), this is cemented even further.
** Eventually subverted as he gets completely defeated and DrivenToSuicide by the Green Goblin, proving he is neither Peter Parker's greatest enemy nor, as Otto himself admitted, a Superior Spider-Man.

** After Issue 25, where Otto with the Venom Symbiote is being shown to effortlessly manhandle the Avengers (including ''[[PhysicalGod Thor]]''), this is cemented even further. For reference, in a fight between Symbiote Spider-Man and Thor in the Ultimate universe (where Thor is usually estimated by fans to be weaker than his mainstream counterpart), Thor [[CurbStompBattle curb stomped]] Peter so hard they were afraid he might've killed him.

** The entire premise of the story is based upon Otto's foiled actions in the ''ComicBook/EndsOfTheEarth'' arc - specifically, his plan to [[MoralEventHorizon burn billions of people alive and leave a fraction of humanity around to suffer]]. However, when talking about the character post HeelFaceTurn, he claimed that [[http://www.newsarama.com/17359-slott-biggest-event-to-happen-in-superior-spider-man-9.html Otto was always an "egoistical annoying shit" who was just like Hawkeye after he became good]]. This raised a red flag [[http://douglasernstblog.com/2013/05/15/dan-slotts-superior-spider-man-genocidal-peter-parker-is-really-just-like-hawkeye/ with blogger Douglas Ernst]], who pointed out that Otto explicitly said he wanted to be worse than UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler during the previous arc he was in and dismissing that simply as "being annoying", and that comparing a MisanthropeSupreme (even one that tries to be heroic) to a character who had previously committed minor crimes before turning good is concerning. (Ernst initially included images of human remains from Dachau to further his point, which didn't go too well with Jewish writer Dan Slott - though he since removed them at the request of a reader, albeit months after the initial post.)
