** After '''four seasons''' of near complete irrelevancy, Charlotte finally had something to do. [[spoiler: Her entire life crumbles, as does her family (two of whom die), all due to a meddlesome step-sister she only recently knew existed.]] What happens? Absolutely nothing!

* BondVillainStupidity: Emily leaving Victoria in the mental institution, which she easily can [[spoiler: (and does)]] escape from, rather than having her prosecuted for the very real [[spoiler: murder of Aiden.]] It's even more egregious when you remember that Emily's goal that entire season was faking a murder to put Victoria away with.

*** Season 4 starts with some very pointed plot threads to this effect, where Emily has literally replaced the Graysons and enacts all of their flaws without any of the redeeming qualities, though they are quickly abandoned in favor of watching the DesignatedVillains perform an intricate juggling act with ten or fifteen IdiotBalls.

** Who is the lighter shade is also something of a matter of interpretation. The Graysons tend to screw people over for profit, but Emily inflicts torment and death purely ForTheEvulz, or over relatively minor offenses that only did harm incidentally. Self-interest is at least a valid motive, if not an entirely altruistic one.
** Given that the series is explicitly based on the Count of Monte Cristo, and the entire point of that story was that the titular protagonist was more of a monster than anyone he sought vengeance against, most likely the AntiHero view is the "alternate" and the intended lesson was a HeWhoFightsMonsters thing which never got driven home fully due to the shorter than expected run of the series.

* CreatorsPet: Victoria ascends to the position in Season 4, suddenly becoming an InvincibleVillain who effortlessly demolishes every move Emily makes against her. Many fans accuse the writers of being overly enamored with Madeleine Stowe's performance, to the point that they refuse to let the character get any comeuppance and half the time it feels like we're supposed to be rooting for her.
** Emily suffers from this as well, bordering on an InvincibleHero. No matter the absurdity of the situation, she will easily manipulate her way out. What kept her from creeping over the edge was the aforementioned love for Victoria. [[spoiler: Although Emily does face some serious obstacles in the final episodes, and Victoria goes the way of almost no CreatorsPet by getting shot and killed. Not by Emily, but by David.]]

* AuthorsSavingThrow: Every AbortedArc in the Season 3 premiere qualifies as this, likely as a means of the new showrunner pulling the show out of its SophomoreSlump.

** Fauxmanda's daytime-soap-opera plunge off a balcony while pregnant in stripper heels, complete with Victoria melodramatically shouting "Martha!", is iconically hokey.
