* AmericansHateTingle: While the hate has died somewhat since the show first premiered, a sizable portion of the Sentai fanbase complained about the show's plot, characters, and motif from start to finish. It's not uncommon to hear the show referred to as To-Crap-Ger.
** In America trains don't play nearly as big a role in transportation as they do in Japan and Europe, possibly making many viewers less nostalgic towards their use as a motif.
* AwesomeMusic:
** The theme song. ''Especially'' the opening.
** Akira's theme as [=ToQ=] 6gou, titled Ame Nochi Rainbow.
** That BGM that's become as ubiquitous as Buchido Icchokusen from Shinkenger - victory vibe from jump.
** To some extent, Akira's little "death requiem" on the harmonica.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: [[Characters/KamenRiderDecade Narutaki's]] appearance in [=ToQger=] vs Series/KamenRiderGaim, but that's pretty standard for him at this point.
* BrokenBase: The suit designs and mecha. Are they an interesting throwback to 80's Sentai or idiotic designs that make the rangers look like a group of mooks?
** Many people have pointed out that they look like knockoff suits used in parodies.
** Meanwhile, many people are pointing out that the merchandise is both extremely uninspired and a blatant rip-off of ''all'' of [[Series/EngineSentaiGoOnger Go-Onger]].
** Some others have drawn an unfavorable comparison to more low-budget costumes made in extremely budget pressed times like that of 70s Tokusatsu such as Bankid and Kagestar.
** With the reveal that [[Creator/YasukoKobayashi Kobayashi's]] head writer, more are willing to give this series a chance.
** The teaser is out. So, fans now seem to be trying to find something to bash just for the hell of it. The theme song and red's voice are the worst offenders right now.
** And now, since the series' debut, people have generally warmed up to the series, but it still has it's detractors. In other words, another average year for a Sentai.
** Fans view Right as either a refreshing protagonist with flaws unlike [[Series/ZyudenSentaiKyoryuger Daigo]] or a VanillaProtagonist who is just as sensitive as [[Series/TensouSentaiGoseiger Alata]], and not being a MemeticBadass as Daigo, again. Although Daigo's impressive collection of people who hate him like Right simply because he's ''not'' Daigo and doesn't hog the screentime.
* DudeNotFunny: Not everyone agrees that Mio slapping Tokatti at the end of #4 is funny, given that the context in question is a case of UnprovokedPervertPayback. It doesn't help that Wagon was teasing them, making Mio think that Tokatti did something to her. Neither does the rest of the group laughing at the scene and showing NoSympathy towards Tokatti.
* EarWorm
** The series opening theme. Especially the guitar riff at the start.
** The ending as well.
** Ditto on that BGM they use for everything.
** Akira's little tune he plays on the harmonica/recorder.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Schwarz is getting this reaction, due averting the OrcusOnHisThrone trope by actually confronting the rangers on his own, his NobleDemon traits, and his PetTheDog moments with Grita.
** Akira. Then again, he's TheSixthRanger, so who's surprised? He's admired for his BadAss moments, his [[TheAtoner quest for redemption]], [[spoiler: being a reformed Shadow, showing that the morality is not entirely black and white]], [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and being the first Orange Ranger since]] ''BattleFeverJ.''
** Kagura for taking BadassAdorable UpToEleven.
* EvilIsCool: Emperor Z, due to his AntiVillain status.
* EvilIsSexy
** Some apparently find Madame Noire attractive, especially when compared to [[{{Gonk}} her daughter]].
** Schwarz to the ladies.
* FanPreferredCouple: After episode 26, Akira and Kagura started to develop a following. Tokkati and Mio are often paired together too.
* FreudWasRight
** Take a look at [=ToQ=] 1's Rail Slasher...
** Also with [=ToQ-Oh=]. See UnfortunateCharacterDesign below.
* FunnyAneurysmMoment: Fan comparisons of Grita with BigEater [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX Quina]] have taken a dark turn after [[spoiler:Grita gave Zed the OzzyOsbourne treatment during their wedding.]]
* GrowingTheBeard: While the show was already good, episode 15 is where it starts to improve and Akira's introduction is where it really starts to [[IncrediblyLamePun shine]].
* HilariousInHindsight:
** In an episode of Series/PowerRangersSPD, supporting character Boom had dreams of being an orange ranger. [[http://henshingrid.blogspot.com/2014/02/orange-tokkyuger-new-catalog-scans.html Now 9 years later, we finally have an orange ranger joining the [=ToQgers=] later on]].
*** Also from ''SPD,'' there's a throwaway joke about Boom being excited to be the Pink Ranger. Well, with the color swapping ability, the idea of a male Pink Ranger doesn't seem too far off.
*** Except that Sentai already had an Orange Ranger, Battle Cossack, from BattleFeverJ.
** Rangers run on imagination power, [[Series/HikoninSentaiAkibaranger huh?]]
*** And it's also based off of [[WesternAnimation/SpongebobSquarepants rainbows...]]
** Maybe they'll have to fight terrorists in the [[WesternAnimation/SouthPark imaginationland]].
** Years ago, Kobayashi once wrote a [[Series/KamenRiderDenO train-themed Rider]], and now she's writting a train-themed Sentai.
** Having the expressionless mascot announce that [[spoiler:our heroes are DeadAllAlong]] [[Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica should sound familiar to some.]] [[note]]Especially with GenUrobuchi's work on Series/KamenRiderGaim creating a sort of ColbertBump for his previous work.[[/note]]
** The Stamp Shadow MonsterOfTheWeek appeared to be channeling the well-known "funyaa~" episode of ''KaizokuSentaiGokaiger'', but then the creature reveals that the victims will become too lazy to even ''keep breathing''. And you know it'll work because [[Film/{{Serenity}} it's been done!]]
** Zed's first appearance has him getting a balloon from a ''pink bunny'' mascot. The BigBad got a sneak peek at the BigGood!
** In TheMovie, Galaxy Line Conductor Lady laments that [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7dLU6fk9QY people have forgotten to look up.]]
* [[HoYay Les Yay]]: Mio and Kagura are particularly close, even for a team as tightly-knit as the [=ToQGers=]. In any given group shot there's a good chance the two of them are side-by-side, especially in one shot where they're sharing the same seat in [=ToQ-Oh's=] cockpit (which has seats for all the [=ToQgers=]). They're actually holding hands in Station 21. [[spoiler:Becomes more obvious since they did first in their childhood.]]
** Station 30 has Kagura wanting very badly to give Mio a great birthday. Yeah, that's something a best friend would do, but there are moments where it's played as if Kagura wanted to surprise her girlfriend.
** HoYay: There are rumors that Akira Nijino is pressumed to be gay after the events of Station 34, where he kissed a man who had a crush on Mio[[spoiler:, and now said man is having a crush on him]].
* JigsawPuzzlePlot: A YasukoKobayashi staple.
* MemeticMutation: Toqgers pose, have various variations, [[http://i.imgur.com/ilTKnns.jpg Madoka Magica]], [[http://i.imgur.com/ZPHKb8P.jpg Kamen Rider Den-O]], [[http://i.imgur.com/utKcUeH.jpg Kamen Rider Gaim]], [[http://i.imgur.com/PO5Si8Q.jpg Heisei Kamen Riders]] , [[http://i.imgur.com/mTmjGSZ.jpg Random Girls]],[[http://i.imgur.com/UKE4yFS.jpg Random Guys]], the obligatory [[http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/aaronhong/PR%20Toys/Akiba03_zpsbc12a57e.png Akibaranger]] one...
* {{Moe}}:
** Tokkati. {{Adorkable}}? Check. [[PrettyBoy Cute face?]] Check. ShrinkingViolet? ''Check.''
** Kagura is also seen as cute by the fans.
** Grita, [[UglyCute in a weird sort of way]].
* MoralEventHorizon: Zed crossed it when he [[spoiler: [[GrandTheftMe hijacked]] and killed Grita, revealing that getting devoured by her was part of his plan]]. He remorselessly tells Schwarz that [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness she has served her purpose]], and then [[spoiler: attacked Schwarz]] as he was grieving.
** Episode 41 pushes him even further over the horizon. He [[spoiler: kills Madame Noir in front of her daughter]], strikes down Nero and Morc for getting in his way when they were just trying to help him, and then [[spoiler: kills Schwartz]].
* MostAnnoyingSound[=/=]MostWonderfulSound: The equipment speaks in a manner meant to sound like a train conductor, i.e. in a cheery monotone laden with excessive politeness and constantly repeating itself. It's also almost constantly talking during battle scenes, having easily three or four times the amount of dialogue per action as any other Sentai team's equipment. The result is that very few people are neutral on the subject of the ToQ Changer's voice, though which one they consider it to be varies wildly from person to person.
** Ever since Akira joined the team, the repetition has been shortened, especially during team henshins
* NightmareFuel: [[spoiler: Gritta eating Z in episode 22.]]
** #23: [[spoiler: Z breaking out of a dying Gritta's body, killing her from the inside out. It's quite a startling jump scare.]]
* SpecialEffectsFailure: The first episode bizarrely seems to use a lot of very obvious stock explosions.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: #20 has Jack-in-the-Box Shadow make two sumo wrestlers dance to what sounds a bit like CarlosSantana's "Smooth". It's the electric guitar that sells it.
* ToughActToFollow: ''[=ToQger=]'' is this because it premiered after the awesomeness that is ''[[Series/ZyudenSentaiKyoryuger Kyoryuger]]''.
** WinBackTheCrowd: Alternatively, because of the infamous SpotlightStealingSquad case in ''Kyoryuger'', Toei tried to balance things again in ''[=ToQger=]'', with emphasis on TrueCompanions. It didn't get the viewership back, but at least it played straight.
* UnfortunateCharacterDesign: When the [=ToQ-Oh=] toy came out, people realized that they could unfold the Red Ressha and give the robot a long red cylinder extending from its crotch. Just people being people and perverting anything they get their hands on into something dirty, right? Well, no. The function [[http://i.imgur.com/7DeUM4X.jpg shows up in-show]] in #3, where the [=ToQgers=] use it to, er, ''thrust'' Red Ressha out of the trap they're in.
* TheUntwist: It seems that the [=ToQgers=] were the most surprised to learn that they were children. The show offered ample evidence to support this to the point where it became a common theory. evidence of this as follows:
** Their memories that come flooding back slowly feature them only as kids.
** They are wearing the same clothing in the first episode that feature in some of these flashbacks
** Their powers run on imagination and operate out of a train that can only be seen by those with moderately high imaginations which pretty much means only children can see it.
** Their behavior especially in early episode is quite childish
* TheWoobie: Grita. She may be from the villain side but considering all the crap she ends up going through [[spoiler: like having your body taken over to seeing your own mother and romantic interest die as a result of rescuing her]], its not hard to feel sorry for her.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: Sure, there are plenty of colorful aspects, but there are some surprisingly dark elements going on.
* XMeetsY: This season is basically ''Franchise/SuperSentai'' meets ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' with its themes of friendship, childhood innocence, and Light vs Darkness.
