* FollowTheLeader: Quake, with the antecedent of VideoGame/Doom, began the multiplayer experience in the 3D FPS genre, but VideoGame/QuakeIIIArena, along with its rival game VideoGame/UnrealTournament, paved the way for the multiplayer FPS. 10 years later, it's still one of the biggest feuds in the gaming history.
* InNameOnly: Aside from II, IV and Enemy Territory, none of the games' "plots" have anything to do with each other. Indeed, ID originally wanted the "Strogg" arc to be an entirely new franchise, but ultimately decided the game needed the brand recognition which the "Quake" name would bring. (Also, their original idea for a franchise name was already copyrighted by someone else.) Quake III Arena[='=]s story makes an attempt to unite the different Id universes until that time into a single story arc.
* SelfPlagiarism: The first game was pratically identical to VideoGame/Doom in gameplay and theme, with the only major difference being that it used true 3D instead of sprites. Quake II and III subverted this, the former by having a different theme, the later by focusing solely on the multiplayer aspect.

!Appliable to VideoGame/Quake, Quake: Dissolution of Eternity and Quake: Scourge of Armagon
* CrowningMusicOfAwesome: Trent Reznor.
* DemonicSpiders: Spawns, Fiends, and Vores. (Almost literal spiders)
* GameBreaker: It's debatable, but the Rocket Launcher was far and away more powerful than anything else in the game. The Lightning Gun, which was the last gun to be found and the one with the highest position, was only a true WaveMotionGun when amped up with Quad Damage.
* GoddamnedBats: Spawns. They're fast, they bounce all over the place making them incredibly hard to hit, hit you for visible chunks of damage, and being blue blobs who don't move when they immediately see you, preferring to wait a second, it's easy to miss them in the dark until they're all over you. On top of that, they explode like a rocket upon death, meaning it's easy to maim yourself (or worse) if you're careless while killing them when they're in your face. If not for their low hit points and low-damage regular attack, they'd border on DemonicSpiders.
** Goddamned Scrags.
* JustHereForGodzilla: The Multiplayer was far and away the main draw of this game (to the point of being the entire purpose of [=QuakeWorld=]), and id didn't make a predominantly single player game again until DOOM 3.
* PortingDisaster: The Nintendo 64 N64 port. Many of the best levels were removed or simplified, and the multiplayer mode is limited to two players only.
** Averted with the SegaSaturn port; it doesn't even use the original Quake engine, but Lobotomy Software's in-house Slavedriver engine, specially tailored to the Saturn. Despite this, it's a lot closer to the PC original.
* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: This game codified a lot of tropes associated with modern FPS', such as weapon jumping/climbing, CaptureTheFlag, 1v1 arena, dedicated servers, lag compensation, green/brown palette, etc. However, it rarely gets mentioned in many Best Game Ever lists along with its progeny. VideoGame/QuakeIIIArena "steal" most of these honours instead.
* ThatOneBoss: Shamblers.
** The final boss is quite difficult as well.
* ThatOneLevel The Pain Maze.
** The final boss level is quite difficult as well.
* YouFailGeologyForever: Lava (even when molten) is thick, viscous and opaque, not the "fiery water" it is in this game (e.g. in the "Ziggurat Vertigo" level).

!QuakeII
* GoddamnedBats: Flyers.
** The Stalkers in Ground Zero. Harder to hit by their size, can walk on the ceilings, and make you pissed off quicky. You'll surely hate them.
* PortingDisaster:
** The N64 port. It has completely new levels and a different story, but the animation takes a noticeable hit and the crouching is removed.
** The Playstation version averted this, although some features and a lot of levels are missing due to the limitations of the controller. But at the same time it had its fair share of unique content to make up for this (mainly visual effects such as lens flares, but in particular there are more Strogg types; the twin-railgun Arachnid and [[spoiler:the giant 'Guardian', a foe physically bigger than Makron's Jorg Suit, which holds the Anti-Matter Bomb you need to destroy the Gravity Booster)]].
* ThatOneBoss: Ground Zero has , Final Bosses, who can summon Stalkers to piss you off and shoots Plasma Beams everywhere. Oh, and if you attempt to use Invulnerability, Quad Damage and/or Double Damage, they automatically use a Invulnerability to reject all your attacks under these powerups' effect, until they ran off.

!QuakeIIIArena / Quake Live
* AndTheFandomRejoiced: The inclusion of fan-favourite third-party maps such as Bloodrun in Live.
* FandomRivalry: With UnrealTournament, again, and to day debates still rage about which one was the superior FPS. It's a friendlier rivalry than most though, and many of each game's players also frequent the other.
* GameBreaker: The three new weapons from Team Arena: the Nailgun, the Chaingun and the Prox Launcher.
* RuinedFOREVER: We have to pay to get cooler levels in Live such as Aerowalk? IT SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS!!!
* ThatOneBoss: Xaero. To summarize, he takes the Railgun and ALWAYS HIT, and if he's close to you, he can simply waste you with the BFG or the Rocket Launcher. Oh, and did we mention that he's hard to hit? Try playing in Nightmare.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Every single change made to Quake Live inevitably leads to dozens of forum posts complaining about the change, even if it arguably leads to better balance, and even if the complainers have nothing better to back up their opinions with than "It belongs that way".

!QuakeIV
* CompleteMonster: The Strogg race as a whole.
* CrowningMomentOfAwesome: The pose that Kane strikes during the ending, upon . Utterly BadAss.
* CrowningMomentOfFunny: After rescue:
--> '
* DemonicSpiders: Berserkers, Grunts, (fast, MadeOfIron, like to berserk and DeadlyLunge) Heavy Hovertanks and Light Tanks.
* FridgeLogic: Aside from aesthetic reasons, Quake II takes place only shortly prior to Quake IV; however, practically everything has undergone a redesign (returning enemy types look different, architectural styles are dissimilar, etc). However, bear in mind that, in the chance of a Quake II remake with the IdTech4 engine, the game would look pretty much similar to Quake IV. Plus, Quake II was done by Id, while Quake IV was made by Raven.
** Anderson's backstory says that he isn't afraid of using weapons against the enemy. Now, [[spoiler:why don't he just shoot the Scientist?]]
* GoddamnedBats: Certain flying enemies.
* HighOctaneNightmareFuel: [[spoiler:The "Stroggification" scene. Kane's only reaction to the whole thing is remaining completely silent and only momentarily emitting the same grunting sound, that sounds more like someone getting beat with a stick than someone being brutally mutilated.]] It might push it into NightmareRetardant territory.
** The Strogg also like using dismembered human corpses (or dismembered living people) as decorations, as areas in this game and it's canonical predeccesor shows. ItGetsWorse: they use them as batteries.
* : [[spoiler: Voss's Stroggified self, who's just about as deadly as the Makron. To elaborate: MadeOfIron, fast for his size, armed with Rocket Launchers and a BFG Dark Matter Gun, can summon Mooks, and recharges his health up to three times. Sure, it takes a lot to bring him down, even at Training Level! And what's more, it doesn't help that he becomes a TragicMonster]].

![=~Enemy Territory: Quake Wars~=]
* CrazyAwesome: Go Strogg, take a Hog then ram it into every enemy vehicle that gets in your way until you die exploding in a fireball of glory that might also kill any pitiful human who happens to be nearby.
