*** Bards also have the Song of Terror, which cast the stackable Terror effect (does damage equal to half the number of purple stars on the board for three turns.). The number of effected rounds can be extended with the Song of Sorrow (extends length of status effects on enemies by three turns) and/or a high enough yellow mana level (both spells grant additional turns with every eight points of yellow mana, which a bard can upgrade cheaply).

*** Hand of Power + Fireball = 3 or 5 damage per blown-up skull, depending on whether you cast Hand of Power once or twice. This is far superior to matching skulls normally, and handily makes up for the Wizard's piss-poor Battle skill. Once you have high enough Air and Fire mastery to cast repeated Fireballs after a couple Hands of Power, you can ''seriously'' wreck an opponent. The only problem is that Hand of Power lasts a mere 10 turns.

Even better, there's equipment that generates mana every time you do 3 or more damage; with this combo, it will trigger once for each skull in the fireball radius. The only problem is that Hand of Power lasts a mere 10 turns.

** The Paladin in [=PQ2=] will, by the time they reach the level cap, have acquired three spells which work beautifully together. Once mana is high enough, first cast Rush (to stun the opponent). Next, cast Hand of God, which distributes fifteen power gems randomly across the board. Once the board calms down, cast Heaven's Wrath. This causes all power gems to detonate, likewise detonating all surrounding gems, and effectively clears the board while granting the player all the benefits from the exploded gems, as well as any matches which appear as the board resets. This combo can sometimes provide enough mana for it to be engineered more than once.

* TheyChangedItSoItSucks: Debatable, but removing the ItemCrafting aspect could be regarded as one of the reasons ''Puzzle Quest 2'' is a ContestedSequel.

** Except for the fact that they make very clear - including in that dialogue - that they are not nice at all. At the very least, they have no problem murdering prisoners [[TooDumbToLive and bragging about it before a battle after demanding the other side surrender]] and generally being impossible to reason with.

** The "Darkness" spell used by a number of enemies does the same thing with purple gems.

* PeripheryDemographic: A really weird attempt is done for ''Puzzle Quest 2''. This game is meant to appeal to hardcore [=PVP=] players and people who found the first game too demanding at the same time.

* ContestedSequel: ''Puzzle Quest 2''. While there are some who prefer it over the original due to its streamlined gameplay and improved graphics, the majority of the [=PQ=] community considers the original to be the better game, due to its greater depth, more challenging gameplay, and more epic scope.

* DemonicSpider: The Berserker and its Enrage/Berserk Rage combo, in ''[=PQ2=]''. Neither spell has a recharge time, and Berserk Rage can be spammed as long as red mana levels are high enough. And unlike its ''PQ'' equivalent, Berserk Rage works on any color gem, not just red. A Berserker with a fortunate board setup can literally wipe you out before you have a chance to retaliate.
