* ViewerGenderConfusion: If you didn't know Shouta Aoi(the male main character's voice actor) sang the theme song, you could very easily make the mistake that the singer is female.
* WhatDoYouMeanItWasntMadeOnDrugs: The anime's ending theme can be rather... unusual for those unfamiliar with the song or the game.

Wasted means set up as possible in the work but unused, not poorly done. AAP need commercial underperformance or other objective proof it alienated.

* AudienceAlienatingPremise: The anime. "OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent is forced to play a popular video game by the school's perfect StudentCouncilPresident". It sounds rather dull even as far as anime plots go, fans of the game aren't that excited to watch a show where someone plays a game they're already playing. * TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: A very common complaint from English fans of the game stems from the wasted opportunity to base the anime around, well, the actual game.

* BizarroEpisode: The Animation is frequently seen as one to the main [=PSO2=] plot. Nothing actually gets accomplished aside from some plot points that have very minor affect to the game's storyThe ending of the show sets up an excuse for Matoi to get PutOnABus for the first half of [=EP4=], and Rina is later brought in during EPISODE 5 as an indirect result of the events of the anime. Furthermore, the show frequently bends the established rules of the series for no discernible reason, such as [[spoiler:Itsuki and Rina getting Photon powersthe [=EP4=] characters almost exclusively run on Ether as the AppliedPhlebotinum of choice]], Darkers having noticeably exaggerated power levels for the sake of drama and plot, and . This is part of the reason why some fans disown the anime and would rather watch Anime/PhantasyStarOnline2EpisodeOracle instead.

Even though the anime has come out before the game did in the west, I think it's safe to say the game is still far more popular than the anime.

* AdaptationDisplacement: The anime series has been licensed for release in the west for winter of 2016. The western release of the game, itself, wouldn't be SavedFromDevelopmentHell until three years later when finally announced for UsefulNotes/XboxOne and PC.
