* MagnificentBastard: We have three examples, two of them borderline and one of them played to the hilt:
** Xerxes Break shows shades of this, what with how he's always planning things out and subtly manipulating his friends to push them down the path he wants them to take, but overall, he's not as in control of most situations as most examples of this trope need to be.
** Vincent Nightray could be considered one of these as well, given how he [[spoiler:Has been playing both sides and orchestrated the [[KillEmAll fall of the Nightray House]]]], but he's far too [[AxCrazy crazy]] and [[KickTheDog pointlessly cruel]] to really fit.
** Rufus Barma is the straightest example in the series. While at first he seems like just an information broker, albeit a manipulative one who knows a ''lot'' more than he lets on, after the incident at Isla Yura's mansion, he shows his true colours by [[spoiler:helping the Baskervilles take down Pandora and personally taking Break out of the fight by destroying the Rainsworth's Key to the Abyss, severing Break's, Sharon's, and Sheryl's contracts with their chains.]] Then, as of Chapter 86, the true depths of his {{Magnificent Bastard}}ry are shown when it's revealed [[spoiler:that he played the Baskervilles for fools: he never betrayed Pandora, he just knew that the Baskervilles would invade anyway and inflict massive casualties, so he took measures to keep as many of Pandora's men alive as possible. He didn't break the Rainsworth's key, he broke the Barma's, and in doing so robbed Glen of the power of Dodo. He also sent Reim the Rainsworth Key, which allowed him to repair the Rainsworth contracts, namely Break's with the Mad Hatter. Because of him, the majority of the Baskervilles were separated from their leadership with Break, and seemingly Pandora, on the counterattack.]]
** The Most Jarring Example is [[spoiler:Jack Vessalius]] the instigator of the Tragedy and used everybody as pawns to send the world into he abyss for his twisted obsession with Lacie.

** Glen/[[spoiler:Revis]] became this ever since it turned out that [[spoiler:he impregnated Lacie]]. He'd definitely like to have an "experiment" with you as well.

Added DiffLines:

* ShipperOnDeck: Break seemed like he was this for Sharon/Gilbert and Sharon/Oz at the very beginning of the series, but he's known for teasing, so we're not sure if he genuinely supported these ships or whether he only suggested them to annoy Sharon...especially since he never mentioned them again after, what, the third volume?
** Both Sharon and Break seem to have a great time teasing Gilbert about his [[AmbiguouslyGay ambiguous]] [[SingleTargetSexuality feelings]] for Oz. When they're not teasing, they take the pair's relationship very seriously and are consistently impressed and pleased with how devoted they are to one another.
* ShippingTorpedo: Vincent teases Gilbert by implying the latter has romantic feelings for Oz, which would suggest a ShipperOnDeck: however, the reality is that Vincent seems to be quite the opposite. He holds quite a bit of disdain for Oz and spites how devoted Gilbert is to him, likely because he [[IncestSubtext wants Gilbert all to himself.]]
** Gilbert ''does not'' ship Oz/Alice, as he makes sure to show us by constantly fighting with Alice over Oz. Even as he warms to Alice later, his feelings towards Oz/Alice do not seem to have changed, although WordOfGod tells us he has nothing to worry about (see ShipSinking on the main page).

* FanPreferredCouple: Sharon is almost always paired up with Break even though their relationship had always been portrayed as LikeBrotherAndSister, and also in spite of the fact that Jun Mochizuki seemed to repeatedly imply that Break was in love with Sharon's mother, Shelly. The epilogue, [[spoiler: which occurs two volumes after Break's death,]] reveals that Sharon ends up [[spoiler: marrying Reim.]] Readers were notably confused, although no more due to Sharon and Break being the FanPreferredCouple than the fact that Sharon and [[spoiler: Reim]] barely interacted throughout the manga and had no important moments together.

*** In a very mild and (possibly) nearly unnoticeable way, Fang x Lottie is one of these. It has actually been confirmed (albeit vaguely) one-sided since WordOfGod said she thought Fang had fallen "slightly in love with Lottie." However, mutually it never happened, not only because [[spoiler: Fang died]] but because Lottie is eternally in love with Oswald.

Added DiffLines:

** The fandom is very divided between people who absolutely hate Levi and people who are okay with him (nobody seems to go past being "okay" with him, though). The reason for this is because of the ambiguous nature of his "experiment." Did he [[spoiler:rape Lacie,]] or did she [[spoiler:consent?]] Many people on the [[spoiler:"he raped her"]] side point out that she was definitely a child when he asked her if she'd be willing to participate in the experiment, but many who claim Levi didn't [[spoiler:rape Lacie]] point out that she only got [[spoiler:pregnant]] when she was an adult, implying Levi both waited for her to become [[spoiler:legal]] and waited to see if she would still [[spoiler:consent]] once she was an adult before actually doing the experiment. It's very confusing.

** Oz x Alice was definitely one of these. The amount of supposed ShipTease even convinced a lot of fans who didn't like the ship that it was canon or going to be canon in the future. It never became canon, and WordofGod stated Oz and Alice were never romantically involved and never would be in an interview after the release of the last volume, as well as that Oz would have been much more likely to get together with Echo [[spoiler: if things had gone differently.]]
