The story regarding the rights of the movie are as follows: Disney was the first production company to obtain them, but when they saw no viable to way to reduce the projected final product below a potential PG-13 rating they decided to auction the rights, which were then obtained by Universal and subsequently green-lighted.

* CompleteMonster: [[spoiler:The [[AIIsACrapshoot malevolent A.I.]], "[[BigBad Sally]]", controls the Tet, a machine it uses to destroy planets after plundering them of their resources. Targeting Earth, Sally [[DetonationMoon destroys the moon]], resulting in catastrophic events that wipe out much of humanity. Capturing Jack Harper and Victoria "Vicca" Olsen, Sally clones Jack and uses his copies as mindless soldiers to fight the surviving humans. Spending the next 50 years hunting down survivors with her drones, Sally leaves clones of Jack and Vicca to maintain her machines on Earth, routinely wiping their memories while falsely promising them voyage to an inhabitable world.]]

* InferredHolocaust: Even with [[spoiler:the Tet]] gone, humanity is screwed. The planet is a wasteland, most of its water is gone. The survivors have no chance of rebuilding civilization again because the planet now lacks the necessary resources for it. Also, the remains of the Moon are still in orbit and will provide a constant source of large-scale impact events that through their sheer number eventually WILL cause a massive extinction of whatever multi-cellular life still lingers on.

* NamesTheSame: "Jack Harper" is also the name of a pair of villainous characters: a ManipulativeBastard on ''Series/TruCalling'', and [[spoiler:the real name of The Illusive Man]] from ''Franchise/MassEffect'' (who is also a smart former soldier [[spoiler:being unwittingly controlled by ancient machine gods]]).

* UncannyValley: Something is strangely.... off about the representative that Sally talks to at the beginning of the movie.
** Victoria is full of this. Whether [[spoiler: she's aware of Tet's true nature and plan or not]], her personality and behavior are almost mechanic and deeply unsettling. The way she looks at the plant Jack was grooming, picked it up and threw it off the rail with a emotionless face and cold demeanor is disturbing. [[spoiler: And TheReveal just makes it worse, especially when you realize there are probably thousands of clones of her out there, all of them a StepfordSmiler ControlFreak who are willing to rat out their supposed husbands to an evil AI at the slighest hint of being scorned. And since Tet is destroyed at the end of the movie, who knows how many of them won't just flip out and try killing their Jacks, nevermind the people who tells them the truth?! Nevermind the possibility that all of them know about Tet, consciously or unconsciously, but prefer to obey her just so they can stay with a married man who doesn't really love them, essentially selling out mankind and ignoring reality over an unreturned love?!?!]]

* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: Pretty much every critic, whether they loved or hated the film, praised it's visuals.

* HilariousInHindsight: Andrea Riseborough and Creator/OlgaKurylenko would again be cast together on the opposite sides of a [[Film/TheDeathOfStalin "world shaking" event]].

It is implied that she also retained some of her original self's memories and knew who Julia was, but lied to Jack because she had a crush on him. She also seems to have genuinely believed the Tet's lie about their mission, right up until she realises the Drone was aiming it's weapons at her.]]
** Victoria even more so considering [[spoiler: that this potentially means there are ''dozens'' of versions of her in a relationship with Jack, who all while, knowingly or otherwise, was pining for another woman.]]

** A lot of what we were told about the state of the planet may prove to be a lie. There is no radiation problem. There is still water. They probably have to reclaim the rest from the Tets Hydro stations around the planet. It will be difficult but humanity has survived on less. It's going to be a while before they reach even the 20th century. The moon also seems to have settled so likely won't be a major problem.

** Victoria even more so considering [[spoiler: that this potentially means there are ''dozens'' of versions of her in a relationship with Jack, who all while was pining for another woman! Which is incredibly ''damn'' depressing, when you stop and think about it?!]]
