* FanonDiscontinuity: This episode gets this quite a bit, primarily because of Spike [[CharacterDerailment suddenly]] holding the IdiotBall.

** While pretty much everyone agrees this isn't a ''good'' episode, a portion of the fans still find many moments genuinely funny, while others can't stand even remembering this episode exists.

* ParvumOpus: Often considered one of the weakest episodes of the series for all of the aforementioned reasons.

* BrokenBase: This episode contains quite a few issues.
** [[ConspicuousCG The use of 3D cel-shaded CGI for the Timberwolves.]]
** The episode's premise kicked up some (mostly tongue-in-cheek) ShipToShipCombat for a while; fans of Spike and Rarity were afraid of ShipSinking. Luckily for them, the episode proper makes it clear that Spike's crush on Rarity is still in effect. Ironically enough, if the WhatCouldHaveBeen is to be believed, the potential for ShipSinking may have been ''even greater'' had ''Rarity herself'' been in Applejack's role.

** Spike being TheKlutz while trying to help out Applejack turned off several fans, as he had been very proficient in doing various kinds of chores in previous episodes. Some go further by saying that his screwing up tasks specifically related to farming would have made sense, but instead he's simply doing household chores that he's usually good at.

** There are complaints the basic plot itself is a tiresome SaturdayMorningCartoon cliche that is beneath the series' creative standards.

* NeverLiveItDown: Some fans are saying this for all the writers due to their decision to scrap the episode's [[WhatCouldHaveBeen original concept]] since Rarity ended up having no episodes centered around her in season 3 as well as making it a worse episode and makes them wonder if they were simply deluding themselves since many fans have said that Rarity rarely (if ever) acts mean. It also doesn't help that some fans have wondered why couldn't they have just simply tried to fix the Rarity element of the original script instead of scrapping it entirely? Plus, the episode is the result of the show's two most controversial writers being paired together. What were they expecting?
** Though others are perfectly fine with Rarity not having her own episode this season, as she arguably had more than her fair share in season 2, while Applejack coincidentally had been somewhat OutOfFocus.

** The Mane Six's fear of the Timberwolves. They've faced stronger enemies like the changelings and Discord without hesitation, and the Timberwolves only take one good hit to defeat, so their sudden terror is confusing to some. However, others have pointed out that the Timberwolves are pretty dang fast and nigh impossible to ''permanently'' kill. This isn't the first time the Mane Six have fled a fight either (the dragon teenagers come to mind).

* AssPull: We've never previously heard of Spike's "Noble Dragon Code", which he invented himself but Twilight knows is very important to him. As demonstrated by [[http://www.equestriadaily.com/2012/12/spike-at-your-service-episode-followup.html EQD's episode follow-up]], Spike's been in mortal peril several times, but never before has this "Dragon Code" been brought up. Could be an in-universe example, depending on when the code was written up and it's possible Spike merely wrote it himself. This is justified based on WhatCouldHaveBeen. With the spotlight of the episode moved from Rarity to Applejack, the writers had to hastily come up with an excuse for Spike helping her at the last minute. Numerous past episodes demonstrate that he would do anything for Rarity (In "Dog and Pony Show" he says as much) but Applejack?

** Some fans have also taken Rainbow's line to mean that Applejack is also working on a novel. There have indeed been fanfics about it.
