** A large portion of the fandom considers it as good as canon that Sunset was being groomed to be a Princess by Celestia in the same manner as Twilight. Some go so far as to suggest Celestia was preparing her to receive the Element of Magic instead of Twilight, and/or that Sunset was her daughter (usually adopted but not always). It's also popular to portray her as a vegetarian, consistent with her equestrian origins.

* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Sunset Shimmer was TheScrappy to viewers of the first movie as detailed below. ''Rainbow Rocks'' devoted an entire arc about her redemption and learning the meaning of friendship - which has led to her to become the franchise's main protagonist. Fans have been very accepting, and clamour for her to appear in the main show as well. In fact - one of the reasons some fans dislike Starlight Glimmer is because they feel her role as Twilight's new student should have gone to Sunset.

* SlowPacedBeginning: The first movie as already established is largely considered decent. It's recommended to stick with the series, as the second and third movies, along with the accompanying shorts have much more fluid animation, becomes comfortable transitioning to a more mundane setting, the pacing improves, and the drama rivals some of the parent series episodes.

* SlowPacedBeginning: The first movie film suffers from this - as Twilight has to meet all of her friends again in the human world, re-establishing these characters that the viewers already established is largely considered decent. It's recommended to stick with know. Rainbow Dash in fact doesn't appear until nearly halfway through the series, as the second and third movies, along with the accompanying shorts have much more fluid animation, becomes comfortable transitioning to film! The first film is also a more rather mundane setting, TeenDrama that doesn't introduce magic until the pacing improves, final act. However the GenreShift to become more MagicalGirl esque and the drama rivals some of the parent series episodes.introducing magical antagonists has proved successful.

* ToughActToFollow: ''Rainbow Rocks'' redeemed the franchise in the eyes of many fans, so the following movies frequently get judged against it.

* FranchiseOriginalSin: One of the movies' criticisms was how the final fight was [[AnticlimaxBoss unsatisfyingly short and one-sided]], despite a CurbStompBattle once ThePowerOfFriendship ([[ThePowerOfLove or such]]) was unleashed being par [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic for the series]]. Why was it a problem here? 1). The series would build up to the climax, while here, what enabled the climax ([[spoiler:magical super modes]]) came so out of the blue as to be an {{Asspull}}. 2). Those [[AudienceAlienatingPremise turned off by the human High School A.U. premise]] felt it was the one interesting part, which by holding it out till the end, [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot wasted much of its potential]]. This got bad enough that the sequel went out of the way to atone by parodying[[note]]They try a similar DeusExMachina, [[RealityEnsues nothing happens]].[[/note]] and averting the series' tendency to such "fights".

** Within the franchise itself, Juniper Montage's easy defeat in ''Mirror Magic'' is quite similar to Sunset Shimmer's. Both transform into {{One Winged Angel}}s, threaten evil without actually doing anything, get beaten quickly and then EasilyForgiven. However Sunset had the benefit of an entire movie devoted to her redemption - and the conflict over her transformation - and still had an interesting backstory as a former student of Celestia's. Juniper meanwhile had none of these things.

Added DiffLines:

* IdiotPlot: If any of the friends had talked at all about the things that caused them to drift apart - a simple text asking what happened - Sunset Shimmer could have been exposed sooner.

Added DiffLines:

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Sunset Shimmer driving the Humane Five apart is something that happened offscreen - and it was done with rather mundane AlphaBitch moves that a [[IdiotPlot preteen could have uncovered]]. Driving the friends apart is actually a pretty impressive accomplishment, and could have been used to show Sunset as a legitimate threat instead of GenericDoomsdayVillain.

* SelfFanservice: Hand-in-hand with the normal show, the human characters tend to be depicted as much more curvaceous and beautiful than the series depicts them as canonically. Sunset Shimmer in particular among the core seven has practically become a sex symbol for the ''Equestria Girls'' series in the fan community.

* AngstWhatAngst: Sunset Shimmer seems to take being in a world where one of her natural abilities (unicorn magic) is nullified just from being there unusually well, even ''before'' she settles down and makes friends there. Furthermore, not once is the idea of her going back to Equestria--even for a little while--ever explored or even ''discussed'' in any of the movies released so far (apart from a deleted scene in ''Friendship Games'').

Furthermore, not once is for a long time the idea of series avoided talking about her possibly returning to Equestria, and when it finally does come up in ''Mirror Magic'', it's treated like a plot point and Sunset shows no emotional reaction to going back to Equestria--even for a little while--ever explored or even ''discussed'' at all, nor does she dwell too much on being back in any of the movies released so far (apart from a deleted scene in ''Friendship Games'').her pony form.

* AssPull: The climax reveals that [[spoiler:Twilight doesn't even need the other five Elements of Harmony to be present to tap into their power; seems like the power of the bond Twilight shared with the human versions of her friends was sufficient to not only allow Twilight to reclaim the powers of the Element of Magic but also summon the powers of the other five elements... which has no basis in the show's actual canon. Sort of but not really justified by the complete lack of any explanation on how the Elements actually work in the show anyway, and by a HandWave from Sunset Shimmer that taking the Elements of Harmony into a world where they don't belong affects their powers [[VoodooShark (don't ask how she knows that)]].]]
