** Was the translation machine built by the scientists actually effective at translating their messages, making the Martians [[BlatantLies lying liars]], or was it just consistently mistranslating their warnings of impending doominess as messages of peace?
** Also the scene where the translation machine was used to translate the Martian leader's broadcast. [[TranslationTrainWreck The translation made no sense]], so it seems more likely the machine just didn't work. Then again, maybe they were just intentionally saying nonsense [[AliensAreBastards just to screw with the humans]]?
*** Or MAYBE the aliens actually came to Earth with peaceful intentions, but something made them change their decision? The dove comes to mind. Maybe [[EpilepticTrees that was some kind of rude insult in their culture or something.]]
-->'''President:''' He ''did'' say 'we come in peace'.
** Or maybe, unable to ever get the machine's bugs sorted out, the human scientists just played a recording at the landing ceremony to cover their own asses.

peace or did the Martians have some sort of Bizzaro language in which they always said the opposite of what they really meant?

* FridgeBrilliance: When nuclear weapons are used against the the Martians they capture the explosive force of the nuke, and smoke it! They actually get high on radioactive explosives, and it gives them high pitched helium voices. Fridge Brilliance kicks in when you realize that a hydrogen bomb really does produce helium as a by-product of nuclear fusion.

* NightmareFuel: Any online discussion of this movie will inevitably devolve into a rundown of just ''how many'' kids had nightmares of the Martians hiding in their closets or outside their windows. Their UncannyValley appearance of [[DemBones a skeleton]], their violent '''ACK ACK''' language, and the sheer glee with which they mutilate/disintegrate humans have haunted the dreams of children throughout TheNineties.

** Perhaps subverted with Portman, given she'd already been recognised for her work in ''Film/TheProfessional'', a few years earlier.

* SpecialEffectsFailure: In the scene where one of the aliens is disguised as a human girl, she's constantly chewing on gum (as explained later, she needs it to breathe). Later, Martin Short's character flirts with her and puts his finger in her mouth, which she bites off. As he removes his hand, he rips off part of her fake skin, exposing the alien jaw. She is then seen still chewing on the gum. However, the exposed alien teeth remain closed the whole time, while they should be shown chewing. It gives the impression that she has a tatoo on her cheek rather than a breach on her mask.

** Why did this film not got an Oscar nomination? Because the martians look amazing! Look at the texture in their brains. The flying saucers also look great. The best shots are the opening title sequence where the saucers leave Mars and fly towards Earth and that bird's eye view of the saucer landing in the Navada desert.

** Of course, even if the film was nominated, they were still going up against ''Film/IndependenceDay''.

** Most likely for similar reasons why humans cannot breathe pure oxygen, as we can only breathe it when it's diluted in nitrogen.
