** The Martian ambassador was brought into the White House claiming to apologize for his people's misdeeds. What does he do? [[spoiler: Reduce everyone to skeletons.]]
** The Martian Emperor when he turns down his chance for redemption and impales the President in the chest with a flag.

** Most likely for similar reasons why humans cannot breathe pure oxygen, as we can only breathe it when it's diluted in nitrogen.

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: Variation: The cast is ''loaded'' with self-sufficient, bombastic [[{{Jerkass}} Jerkasses]]. This is so we don't feel sorry when the Martians kill all of them and feel good about the ones which ''are'' genuinely good [[spoiler: mostly]] surviving.

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Was the translation machine built by the Martians actually effective at translating their messages, making them [[BlatantLies lying liars]], or was it just consistently mistranslating their warnings of impending doominess as messages of peace?

** Martian science.

*** Allergies to the remaining 22% of stuff? Could be some thing as simple as an oxygen allergy?
*** ^I thought of that, but if that were the case then the Martian Girl wouldn't have survived. She wasn't protected from the atmosphere; she just chewed nitrogen gum.

* HilariousInHindsight: In the ending we get Natalie Portman [[spoiler: giving the movie's true hero a medal and kissing him]]. An apparent reference to ''StarWars: ANewHope'', 3 years before Portman became the mother of both characters in that scene in ''ThePhantomMenace''.

* OneSceneWonder: Lisa Marie as the Martian Girl.
* RetroactiveRecognition: Creator/NataliePortman, Creator/JackBlack, and Sarah Jessica Parker (to a lesser extent), were not famous when this movie came out and would only later be recognized, making this all-star cast even more impressive.

* VisualEffectsOfAwesome: Why did this film not got an Oscar nomination? Because the martians look amazing! Look at the texture in their brains. The flying saucers also look great. The best shots are the opening title sequence where the saucers leave Mars and fly towards Earth and that bird's eye view of the saucer landing in the Navada desert.

Added DiffLines:

** The movie blatantly depicted the Martians as sadistic, toying with their victims first is half the fun. Their entire downfall was down to the fact one alien couldn't resist stopping to set up an incredulously large and elaborate device to kill Grandma, a harmless old lady oblivious to it's presence, rather than just quickly zapping her on the spot.

* UnintentionalySympathetic: Billy-Glen Norris - and by extension the Norris family, of course. As pathetic as it usually looks in the movies, most people would say that there's nothing dishonorable about surrendering if your gun jams and you know you can no longer fight - and how was anybody supposed to know the Martians (usually) didn't take prisoners? Billy did try, and the sight of his parents sobbing at his funeral does come off as unintentionally moving. Maybe Billy wasn't an "American hero", but he deserves more sympathy than he gets.
