* AwesomeArt: Keith Thompson's [[http://img.sparknotes.com/content/sparklife/sparktalk/2014/westerfeldarttime_LargeWide.jpg insanely gorgeous]] illustrations expertly depict BioPunk and steampunk TechnologyPorn in equal measure and are a major draw for fans.

* CrazyAwesome: Zaven. So much.

* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: It explicitly states in the blurb of ''Goliath'' that Alek finds out about Deryn's true identity, and that she's in love with him. It also refers to "true love with a commoner," leaving little question of whether or not he'll reciprocate her feelings. It's particularly interesting since Westerfeld has enough track record [[{{Uglies}} breaking up]] [[{{Midnighters}} his couples]] to create legitimate doubt in those who've read his other books.

Added DiffLines:

*** Lurker of Chalice's music also qualifies, considering how much more depressive it is than Leviathan. The intro to "Piercing Where They Might" and "Specter as Valkerie Is" are particularly sad.

* AwesomeArt: The album cover and supplementary artwork for ''Scar Sighted'', which [[TearJerker were made by Jef's girlfriend while she was dying of a brain tumor, and which he decided to keep.]]
** The rest of his album covers could also qualify, particularly ''A Silhouette in Splinters.''

* BaseBreaker: Jef himself, due to his criminal convictions and accusations of misogyny.

* JerkAssWoobie: Jef for some fans. For one thing, you pity his problematic childhood and the loss of his girlfriend, but then you read about him assaulting his later girlfriend with ''his tattoo tools'' you will raise an eyebrow. It does end up going to an EarnYourHappyEnding when he got married and now is raising a baby girl.
* NightmareFuel: Jef's screams are unnerving at best, the music is very disjointed and just uncomfortable. Makes you wonder what goes through his mind to write this type of stuff...

to:

* EpicRiff: He's more known for the atmosphere of his music, but he can still write some distinctive, memorable riffs when he wants to. "Aphonos" is a good example.

It does end up going to being an EarnYourHappyEnding type deal when he got married and now is raising a baby girl.
* NightmareFuel: Basically everything about his music, but ''especially'' his screams, which are just inhuman. Then there's the hateful, despairing, and disjointed tone of the music itself. It really isn't surprising when you learn about the dude's CreatorBreakdown.
** Again, his album covers. ''Tentacles of Whorror'' might be the worst one, because of how [[NightmareFace obscene]] it is.
** All of ''Scar Sighted'' is nightmarish, but the closing track, "Aphonos", might be one of the most apocalyptic, crushing things he's ever recorded. Between the brutalizing riff and
Jef's screams are unnerving at best, the music is very disjointed and just uncomfortable. Makes you wonder what goes through his mind to write this type of stuff...tortured screams, it legitimately sounds like a nightmare. The haunting ambient outro doesn't help matters.

** Just when he talks about Lurker of Chalice and pauses when he mentions that the project had a "muse", only to pause and simply say... "…she’s dead, so I don’t think Lurker will happen again…" before looking away in sadness.

* MagnumOpus: Many fans would say ''The Tenth Sublevel of Suicide'' is his best album. Now that ''Scar Sighted'' is out, some are saying it's his best album to date.

Added DiffLines:

* AngstWhatAngst: Alek copes with his parents' deaths really well... It's especially jarring in comparison with Deryn, who's still pretty broken up about her father dying two years before the start of the story.

* NarmCharm: [[spoiler:Alek and Deryn's declaration of love at the end of ''Goliath'' is pretty cheesy, but it's pretty sweet as well.]]

** The title track of ''Scar Sighted'' definitely counts. The instrumental sounds almost like a funeral dirge, and the vocals are mainly just tortured, agonized screams.
