* TheWoobie: Poor Christina. She's married to an abusive asshole, seems to have no friends except her own husband's mistress, and has a heart condition which progressively worsens as the story unfolds (thanks to all the stress and paranoia she's put through). [[spoiler:And then she gets murdered by said husband and mistress, who have been working together against her the whole time.]]

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: The original film was adapted from the novel ''Celle qui n'était plus'', by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac. Clouzot supposedly beat out Creator/AlfredHitchcock for the movie rights.
** Interestingly enough, Hitchcock would obtain the rights to another Boileau/Narcejac novel, ''D'entre les morts'', a couple years later and make it into his film ''Film/{{Vertigo}}''.
