* RandomEventsPlot: A big criticism of the album is that the "story" is very half-baked (arguably unfinished) and the songs don't really have anything to do with it. Aside from "Mr. Roboto", you could make very minor changes to the lyrics and fans would think it's just another Styx album.

* SoBadItsGood: The ''Killroy Was Here'' mini-movie shown prior to concerts, with every band member proving to be a terrible actor and cheesy dialogue galore.

** The protagonist's name, Robert Orrin Charles Kilroy ([[FunWithAcronyms "ROCK"]]), who disguises himself as a robot. Isn't there a [[VideoGame/MegaManClassic certain famous robot who's name is also "Rock"?]]. And wasn't there a [[Music/TheProtomen rock opera]] written about said robot, with a fascist government who uses robots to enforce it's will? Not saying that there's a connection, but it was too coincidental to not point out.
** Also worth noting is that the [[Music/TheProtomen band]] responsible for said rock opera features a member who goes by the name [[ShoutOut K.I.L.R.O.Y.]] and they have been known to perform a CoverVersion of ''Mr. Roboto'' both in concert and on their album ''The Cover Up''.

* ValuesDissonance: [[NightmareFuel Nightmare-inducing appearances]] aside, the Roboto face masks are based on racist caricatures of Japanese people (with very slanted eyes and three small pegs on their "mouths" resembling buck teeth), which, while still acceptable during the 1980s, is frowned upon in today's society.

Stage performances made it even ''worse'', with the Robotos doing a lot of cross-armed bowing.

** Depending on your views, the album's premise could be seen as this, as rock music largely faded from mainstream consciousness by the time UsefulNotes/TheNewTens started. Not because MoralGuardians successfully lobbied in getting the genre banned (as ''Kilroy Was Here'' envisioned), but [[GenreKiller because of]] [[CreativeSterility creative stagnation]] and a series of societal changes and complex circumstances that extend beyond the scope of this article.
** The lyrics of ''Mr. Roboto'' take on new meaning during the COVID-19 pandemic, as they describe "the modern man" who is forced to hide away, wear a mask, be dependant on technology, all simply to survive, which is pretty much everyone during that time.

* BrokenBase: It got real hard to be a Styx fan about a month after this album came out. To be fair, the rise of new wave displaced the other arena rock bands too (REO Speedwagon, Journey, etc.). But those bands didn't do it to themselves with a single album.
