* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: ''WesternAnimation/{{Jem}}'' is supposed to be a cartoon [[MerchandiseDriven made to encourage little girls to buy dolls]], however it's written much more seriously than you'd think. It features a TwoPersonLoveTriangle with all the [[YourCheatingHeart moral issues that comes along with that]], has episodes dealing with emotionally and physically abusive parents, grief, drug abuse, suicide, and other tough topics. That's even ignoring that the series ''starts'' with the protagonist's father having just died. Said death, and the death of her mother, have a huge impact on her life. WordOfGod is that the creator wanted to push the envelope of '80s cartoons even more with episodes dealing with {{Alcoholic Parent}}s, Pizzazz being reunited with her deadbeat MissingMom, and characters who are canonically LGBT, however the series was cancelled after three seasons due to [[ScrewedByTheMerchandise inadequate toy sales]].

Stormer gets shipped with pretty much everyone. She's most popular with Kimber and Roxy though.though.
** To a lesser degree, Pizzazz. She gets shipped with all her band-mates, Clash, Jerrica/Jem, Riot, and Eric.

** Judging from "Father's Day", Pizzazz's dad is meant to be sympathetic. The narrative makes him seem like a hard-working father who lost touch with his daughter after a messy divorce and can't figure out how to deal with her anymore. However, he instead comes off as a [[ParentalNeglect neglectful]] [[GoodJobSonGuy parent]] who only cared enough about Pizzazz to [[DisneyLandDad give her presents]].

* MemeticLoser: In canon Rio is a nice, if very jealous, guy. However many fans seem him as a whiny creep who [[YourCheatingHeart cheats]] on his ''two'' girlfriends and displays [[DomesticAbuse abusive behavior]].

** Rapture doesn't really have [[FlatCharacter much of a role]] outside of being the Stingers' bassist and [[ForTheEvulz being a manipulative bitch to virtually everyone she encounters just for the sake of it.]] At least Minx had an episode dedicated to her which explored BeneathTheMask and fulfills her role of "Rio chaser".

Jem And The Holograms: Like A Dream.

Added DiffLines:

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic:
** Jem, and by extension Jerrica, has many unintentionally negative traits such as her cheating with Rio or her instantly disliking The Misfits when they had yet to do anything to her.
** Rio's CrazyJealousGuy traits were meant to be [[MrViceGuy a vice]], however it was overdone to the point where he looks more like a BastardBoyfriend. His TwoPersonLoveTriangle also comes off as just straight up infidelity, with none of the handwaving reasons behind it helping.

* HeartwarmingInHindsight: In the "Music and Danse" song from the "Homeland, Heartland" episode that first aired in February of 1988, there is a line that says (while briefly accompanied by a picture of Europe) "With music and danse, we'll help to bridge the gap, with music and danse we'll wipe the lines right off the map". [[TheFallOfTheBerlinWall points guessing what occurred less than two years later.]]

* BadassDecay [=/=] VillainDecay: The Misfits, but in particular Pizzazz. Within the first several episodes and the first season, the girls were little more than wild, bitchy troublemakers who, in spite of their antics, were still worthy opponents to Jem and The Holograms. Pizzazz was also a strong frontwoman for the band and came off as a strong, independent woman. Come season three, Pizzazz was more love and power hungry as well as unstable and brattier, to the detriment of the band who became more of a joke. Things came to a head once The Stingers arrived, and she showed her own lack of loyalty to her band and was desperate for the affections of Riot, who clearly had no interest in her and allowed herself to be manipulated and embarrassed by his bandmates. Soon afterwards, they were rarely seen on the show unless it was to show some sort of effort by Pizzazz to seduce Riot.

* DesignatedHero: Rio, he is excessively possessive of both Jem and Jerrica to the point of being borderline abusive yet he is essentially shown as the "ideal boyfriend" of the show

** Stormer. Her popularity is likely due to being the [[TokenGoodTeammate only member of the Misfits who]] [[EvenEvilHasStandards actually has standards.]] Yeah, she joins in whenever they pull harmless pranks and usually gets roped into Pizzazz's schemes by association, but she's never shown acting malicious on her own. She was the only one who was nice to Ashley when she tried to get the Misfits to be her friends, and later helped her prove Jem's innocence when she was framed for robbery (granted she was in disguise). If it wasn't for the fact that she's such a pushover, you'd have to wonder how someone like her ever joined a band like the Misfits.

** Putting one or more of the bands on VH-1's ''Behind the Music'' (a melodramatic "documentary" series depicting the backstage drama for various bands). these are played anywhere from totally straight to DeconstructiveParody.

** Eric crossed it when he burned Jerrica's dead mother's master tapes of her music after holding them for ransom [[labelnote:spoiler]]Luckily, it turns out that Synergy was based on the appearance, personality, and voice patterns of Jem's mother, and Aja deduces that the source of the voice patterns must have been the concert recordings, so she takes Synergy apart and searches through her core matrix until she finds them[[/labelnote]]

** A lot of people don't like Ba Nee due to being the resident DamselScrappy and her yearning for her father eventually coming off as {{Wangst}}.
** Rapture doesn't really have [[FlatCharacter much of a role]]. At least Minx had an episode dedicated to her and fulfills her role of "Rio chaser".
** A lot of people hate Jetta for being a complete witch to fan-favorite Stormer, who was the one to got her in the band, and to a lesser extent, how she treats Roxy. The Hub's website even calls her out on the former.

Riot/Jem can get pretty nasty at times. Then you have those who would prefer her with ''neither'' man (either due to her two-timing or because both of them are unworthy.)
* SignatureSong: Jem And The Holograms: Like A DreamDream.
** The Misfits: Makin' Mischief.

* AngstWhatAngst: "Father's Day" takes place in what seems to be the girl's first Father's Day without their dad. Kimber is emotionally distraught, but the others don't seem remotely phased. They also don't understand ''why'' Kimber is so upset.

* UnintentionallySympathetic: Clash, particularly in "Father's Day" and ''especially'' in "Video Wars". Even though she was an obnoxious brat who willingly and enthusiastically tried to sabotage the careers of both Jem and The Holograms and her cousin Video (and her antics nearly getting the women ''killed'' on at least one occasion), her treatment of the Misfits in the former episode just because she lied to her father claiming to be a member of the band gives way to a possible, genuine [[IJustWantToHaveFriends motive for her behavior.]] Even in the latter episode when she was confronted by both Jem and Video after being exposed and while both women were rightfully angry, there was still [[SympathyForTheDevil a concerned and even forgiving tone in their voices.]] Plus, seeing The Misfits [[YouHaveFailedMe reject her a final time]] as she desperately pleads with them to give her another chance puts all of her past appearances in [[HarsherInHindsight a different, bitter light.]]
