Added DiffLines:

* ComedyGhetto: There were many critics who considered comic operettas to be beneath Sullivan's attention as a "serious" composer. Sullivan was inclined to agree with them, although it helped that the [[MoneyDearBoy paychecks]] he got from the Savoy operettas were far above what he got for his serious classical compositions. Of course, his music proceeded to experience MagnumOpusDissonance, and these days his concert works are remembered mainly as pieces from the guy who wrote those comic operettas with Gilbert.

ZCE, Seinfeld Is Unfunny clean-up

%%* OnceOriginalNowCommon: It is hard to believe now, but at the time what Gilbert was doing was actually quite new and innovative.

No longer a trope and not YMMV

* AcceptableTargets: Many a person would have been upset at Gilbert if he had been the model for King Gama -- but since Gilbert was mocking Gilbert, it was all right.

* MagnumOpusDissonance: Sullivan would much have preferred to be known as the composer of his serious classical music, especially the {{opera}} ''Ivanhoe'', agreeing with music critics who often took him to task for wasting time with comic operetta. (Although he certainly didn't mind that his collaborations with Gilbert [[MoneyDearBoy were very lucrative]].) Today, of course, his "serious" music is remembered only because it's by the composer of those comic operettas.

* WriteWhatYouKnow: Gilbert did not enjoy his previous career as an attorney, but he put it to good use when writing ''Theatre/TrialByJury''.

"What an Idiot!" is now Flame Bait.

* WhatAnIdiot:
** The unnamed king in the song "There Lived a King" from ''Theatre/TheGondoliers''.
** Arac, Scynthius, and Guron in ''Princess Ida'', specifically during their (in)famous striptease song ("This Helmet I Suppose"), but really, any time any of them opens their mouth. ("On the whole we are/Not intelligent--/No! No! No! Not intelligent.")
