* ValuesDissonance: A few jokes are made about characters “being gay” when they don’t express their feelings in a traditionally masculine way. By the year 2020, as the LGBT community has gained more mainstream visibility and many of these “masculine” ways of expressing feelings been called into question after the “Me Too” movement, the dissonance becomes two-fold. Both calling someone “gay” as an insult and the presented reasons for doing so have become less acceptable in the present day. Additionally, Tom gives an AsideGlance when Summer mentions dating a woman in the past, which would probably not cause such a reaction today with open bisexuality considered more acceptable. However, this is at least partially intentional, to play up Tom and his friends’ immaturity.

** With regards to Summer's character, did she enter into the relationship thinking it was only a casual fling and hoping that Tom saw it that way (and the break-up brought on by the realization that he didn't)? Or on some level did she feel sorry for Tom and kept things going on longer to spare his feelings? For that matter, dancing with him at the wedding after they'd broken up - is it because she assumed they were BetterAsFriends and he wouldn't interpret anything romantic from it, or did she [[spoiler: not mention her fiance]] again to spare his feelings?

* CommonKnowledge: Some viewers - infamously Anita Sarkeesian of ''WebVideo/FeministFrequency'' - think this is a straight ManicPixieDreamGirl movie. This ignores that it's a ForegoneConclusion Tom and Summer won't end up together, and the Aesop is not to expect another person to improve your life based on superficial traits.

* {{Fanon}}: Due to the FourthDateMarriage some people have assumed that [[spoiler: Summer met her husband while still seeing Tom - and thus broke up with him for this reason]]. WordOfGod has denied this.

* {{Fanon}}: Due to the FourthDateMarriage some people have assumed that [[spoiler: Summer met her husband while still seeing Tom - and thus broke up with him for this reason]]. WordOfGod has denied this. Doing the math confirms [[spoiler: she got married six months after the break-up, which is fast but still perfectly plausible]].

** Rachel saying she knows "more than you" to Tom about PMS is darkly amusing when you see Chloe Moretz in ''{{Film/Carrie 2013}}'' - where she gets her period late at the age of seventeen and doesn't know what's happening.

* WhatAnIdiot: Summer feels the very real need to tell Tom about what she is looking for: that she isn't looking for anything serious. Okay, very well.
** '''You'd Expect:''' For Summer to sit down with Tom in a less emotionally charged situation and tell him point blank, "I am not looking for anything serious, and I don't want you to get the wrong idea." This is something that could really hurt Tom if not handled appropriately, so it should be delivered in a delicate fashion.\\
** '''Instead:''' Summer tells Tom while they are in the middle of fooling around, leaving him in an unfair position where he's going to be less likely think rationally. The onus is still very much on Tom for not taking her words seriously, but Summer also didn't help by telling him her feelings in the middle of such a sexually charged moment.

** '''Resulting in:''' Tom not 'hearing' Summer and getting the wrong message throughout the movie. Again, Tom is still in the wrong, but Summer doesn't come off very sensibly either.

* HollywoodHomely: Downplayed. It's said earlier on how Summer is out of Tom's league, and a {{Jerkass}} at a bar reacts with shock at them dating. This is ignoring the fact that Tom is played by Joseph Gordon Levitt. He's dressed down in unflattering clothes and a slightly nerdy hairstyle but it still seems odd that Tom is supposed to be considered unattractive.

** The narrative seems to view Tom as an immature DoggedNiceGuy who has an EntitledToHaveYou attitude. Tom admittedly does have an unhealthy view of Summer. The events in the movie is only shown from Tom's perspective and consequently we never get to know Summer as a person. Summer makes it clear that she's not looking for a serious relationship with him but he still throws a tantrum when his relationship with her inevitability falls apart. He never describes what parts of her personality he likes, merely describing her physical appearance.

*** While Tom does overestimate some of her actions, from his perspective she seems to give him little bits of false hope. It seems that Summer could possibly be aware of how much of a destructive presence she is in Tom's life [[spoiler: and breaks up with him partly for this reason]]. It would explain her comparison of their relationship to that of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, comparing herself to Sid.

** Among fans of the movie, there is a clear divide between those who empathize with Summer and think Tom is an immature, selfish, delusional {{Yandere}} who unfairly projects the person he wants Summer to be onto her, versus those who empathize with Tom and think Summer is a selfish bitch. Interestingly, younger viewers tend to fall into the latter category, and many people say they empathized with Tom when they were teenagers and switched sides upon rewatching as an adult. Tom's actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt has made it pretty clear he's in the pro-Summer camp.

Broken Aesop is not YMMV.

* BrokenAesop: Summer getting increasingly more intimate with Tom (telling him things she never told anyone else, hand-holding, etc.) makes it hard to sympathise with the movie's perspective that Tom should have realised Summer didn't want anything serious, since it comes off like she just doesn't want to deal with the responsibility. This gets worse when [[spoiler: she insensitively dances with him at a friend's wedding while she's already engaged to someone else, and she marries someone after not knowing them for very long.
