I was a bit unsure about that, since Cid and Shera weren't in a relationship and they both make it very obviously they weren't in a relationship at the time. They do end up together, but that was after his character development, but still.

Nowadays many see as gratuitously caricatural or even racist, with some even comparing him to a {{Blaxploitation}} character. However back when the game was released, Barret was praised for being one of the first black heroes in the [=RPG=] genre and a positive portrayal at that, since in spite of his stereotypical aspect, he's actually a badass and has a lot more depths than he shows at first.
