* MisaimedFandom: He was easily the most popular character from Creator/JackKirby's ''ComicBook/NewGods'' metaseries, and he went on to become one of DC's most popular villains afterwards. [[note]]Not that this is saying much since the only New Gods who weren't resigned to comic book obscurity were him, Orion, Highfather and arguably Lightray.[[/note]] Ironically however, Kirby himself ''hated'' the EvilIsCool trope and intended Darkseid to be something of a paper tiger whose power came mostly from how much people feared him (hence Darkseid [[http://1.media.dorkly.cvcdn.com/31/99/03d99d9b85f7b88540a233d2226856a0.jpg getting mugged by two human crooks who don't know who he is)]]. Likewise, Darkseid's code of honour (much like that of ComicBook/DoctorDoom) was not intended to make him out to be a complex NobleDemon, but rather to make him seem more like a SmugSnake who only held to it because [[EvilCannotComprehendGood he thought it made him better than "common" criminals]].

In the end, [[MyRealDaddy the fans simply preferred Darkseid as a villain with actual clout and chutzpah]] and that was the interpretation that stuck.

* AntiClimaxBoss: The ''Series/{{Smallville}}'' version of him is a much bigger threat when he's a disembodied spirit spreading malevolence amongst the people of the Earth. As soon as he gets a body by [[GrandTheftMe possessing]] [[spoiler: Lionel Luthor]], Clark very easily takes him down.

[[spoiler: The tie-in comic has him reveal to Superman that due to the possession, he was [[WorfHadTheFlu not at full power]] or else he would never have been defeated by him.]]

* Tearjerker: Even at the height of his evil ambitions, Darkseid really did love his wife, Suli, and would have given everything up for her. With her loss, he sees nothing left but his villainous goals.

goals save a minor but notable leniency towards their son, Kalibak, showing he hasn't forgotten her.

* FanNickname: Jobberseid, when being submitted particularly hard to TheWorfEffect.

* MagnificentBastard: Almost all incarnations. Most notably his DCAU incarnation, which has him brainwashing Superman to send him against Earth. If Superman finishes the job, then Earth is softened up enough for him to take over. If he doesn't succeed, then Superman will be feared and hated by the people of Earth who he had worked so hard to get the trust of.
