** Lenalee, mostly for {{Shipping}} reasons.

* BaseBreakingCharacter:

* EnsembleDarkhorse: In one character popularity poll, Kanda managed to steal the #1 position away from Allen despite having been absent for nearly three entire story arcs.

** Although Cross Marian started as a caring master, during the Noah's Ark story, Allen revealed he was forced to pay a lot of money during his training for debts to the point it was almost a black comedy. However, following this arc Hoshino stated in Charagray that Cross thinks of Allen as his own son lampshaded by an elder. Sadly, in the latest chapters it was revealed that Cross also knew of the 14th's entire existence, questioning readers whether or not he cared for Allen as pointed by none other than Louvlier.
* BrokenBase: The Noah. Either they are a cool group of attractive and creepy badasses that contribute to the series Myth Arc, or a SpotlightStealingSquad that moves the series away from its original premise and their immortality causing them to long overstay their welcome. [[spoiler: Even Skin, who died, is eventually going to be revived.]]

** The Black Order got this especially Rouvelier following the Noah's Ark saga. Lenalee is forced a lot by Rouvelier to regain her Innocence despite still suffering posttraumatic disorder. While Lenalee gets better thanks to her decision to fight, Allen gets it really bad in the following arcs once his connection with the 14th is revealed to the point of being imprisoned by these guys. There is also Kanda and Alma's origins by Bak's parents and how darker the story became by that moment. While many readers lost respect for the Black Order mainly due to their treatment on Allen, others have appreciated how Hoshino managed to remove white and black morality from the series and made ''D.Gray-man'' more complex as a result, with Allen negating either side of the groups.

** Lavi also got a lot popularity to the point he got third in the Charagray guidebook. However, Hoshino admitted she could not show more of Lavi's character by that point due to the plot's focus, resulting in volume 19 with Lavi insulting none other than Hoshino for his lack of screentime.

* WhatAnIdiot: Jasdevi could probably have ended the fight on the Ark instantly if they'd done the right thing.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: It's a shonen manga alright. However, in the very first chapter we see demon eating a person to steal its skin! After the Noah's Ark, almost every single Akuma is seen dropping a lot of blood when Allen and Kanda defeat them.
** TakenUpToEleven when the series was moved to the Jump Square. Hoshino noted that since the current was aimed at older readers, some things might need to change. And oh boy, the Alma Karma story arc took it really far. The mass murder from Alma's past resulted in Hoshino adding a brief chapter for in the collected volumes. Even the ''Hallow'' had to censore some scenes like when Allen's right leg is broken or when Kanda and Alma start destroying each others' bodies.

After Allen helps Alma and Kanda escape, his attempt to help the Third Exorcists is mistaken for an act of betrayel, Link restraining him under the belief Allen was killing his family. The Upper Members however only care that Allen disobeyed a direct order, lost Black Order assets, and seemingly aided the enemy. The idiot part comes in that if Allen truly had done something wrong, his Innocence would have turned him into a Fallen One much like Suman Dark did. The fact he is a Noah wouldn't change anything as Noah's Ark, are still human. Despite his Innocence not changing him, meaning he did not betray God, the Upper Members still wanted Allen executed. Made worse by the fact that other members have tried to testify on his behalf, only to be threatened with punishment if they do not fall in line. *CounterpartComparison: Allen is often compared with Edward Elric, the protagonist of ''FullmetalAlchemist'' as both possess a similar tragic backstory involving the revival of a relative. However, their personalities are almost the opposite and skills differ a lot based on their own series' themes.

** Johnny Gill. You either hate him for being completely irrelevant and a huge crybaby, or you feel sorry for him with all the traumatic experiences he's going through over the course of the story. Or both.
