* FridgeLogic: When the villagers in Perekhody are herded into the church, the German officer tells them that they can come out as long as they leave their children behind; nobody stops Florya when he climbs out a window. Likewise, when one of the partisans yells at the 'new kid' to hurry up at the end of the film, it is revealed that he is addressing a new recruit, not Florya. This reinforces the film's portrayal of Florya's accelerated evolution from carefree adolescent to battle-hardened soldier.

* NightmareFuel: Most scenes in the latter half of the movie, from the swamp and onwards. The most chilling fact is that ''everything'' here happened in reality. No HollywoodHistory, this is.

* MagnumOpus: This fim is the best known and most well-regarded work of its director, Elem Klimov. He didn't make any more films after it, stating that "Everything that was possible I felt I had already done."

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: No matter how good intentions you may have had going into it, war will eat away your innocence and sanity to the point that your original intentions would be worthless and Florya, the main character, only comes off as sympathetic in the end by realizing that at one point even Hitler had been innocent.
