** Although a lot of people were shocked and complained about Arma 3's "futuristic" setting, most of its equipment is actually in use already, or at the very least in prototype form. ** The TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture setting of Arma 3 has been a point of contention through its entire lifetime. * CultClassic: The first game was quite short lived and not quite polished with a low player count coming mostly from Videogame/OperationFlashpoint. And the second game before VideoGame/DayZ, while it had a not-so-low player count, flew mostly under the radar of most gamers and gaming journalism.
** Averted mostly for the third installment. By 2015 it was selling well enough and getting mainstream recognition. By 2016, and with the advent of the Apex expansion, it remained among the top ten of every Steam sale that year. 2017 saw the rise of many survival, deathmatch and battle-royale-style games based on Arma mods and gameplay, that raised the series' public profile and gaining widespread recognition. WebVideo/SovietWomble's "Bullshittery" videos helped to raise the awareness of [=MilSim=]-style gamemodes. Though it is still acknowledged that it is not an easily approachable gameplay for many gamers.

CUP on the other hand, basically adds every content from all previous ARMA games, every single gun, vehicles and unit (except for the campaigns), even adding some content of their own. Since both mods have significant overlap, most players have to choose one or the other, RHS cite higher quality and accuracy while CUP fans tend to prefer content. However, RHS-supporters will gladly use the CUP maps mod, since they are downloaded separately from the rest of CUP.

I see that rant was readded without explanation. As I said before, that's completely and utterly wrong on every level, there's not a single sentence in this that's correct. I'm not gonna edit war, but seriously? To emphasize, almost everyone takes a sniper rifle or other long range weapon (be it a DM Ror MG) if they can because ARMA is all about long range combat, and most such players also carry a rocket launcher to deal with armored threats. Not once in my hundreds of hours on MP have I seen anyone complaining about teammates using sniper rifles or being useless snipers, hell I've almost never seen anyone complain about team loadouts period save for some jokes about players intentionally wearing silly outfits like the beach trunks. A sniper "walking you through" an area is something even hardcore servers never bother with, I could go on but again, literally every sentence is wrong. If you readd this again, please at least give a reason.

* AcceptableTargets: Snipers, dear god snipers. In the adequate context, a competent sniper/spotter team can be a godsend, providing intel, taking out key enemies and walking you through a difficult area with top-notch data, you know, what a sniper team actually does BESIDES killing people. In public servers, however, every inexperienced player under the belief that a sniper is the epitome of badassitude, locking down enemy forces in their hiding spots, will simply pick the biggest rifle and scope they can find, and try to start taking out random enemies from afar, caring only about racking up their kill-death ratio from a relative safety of the distance (that's assuming their actually competent enough to pull of the long range shots) ignoring whatever objectives the mission has or the needs of the team as a whole, thus earning them the scorn of almost every player in the server. This effectively cripples the fighting force in almost every game mode, since no matter how many snipers there are killing enemies, someone is gonna have to go there and actually accomplish the mission objectives. Most public servers fix this by restricting the larger rifles to the marksman roles or requiring permission from the admin, while private communities can enforce roles on their players. Public servers without oversight are usually full of these snipers until they learn on their own that an untrained sniper is not the invincible killing machine people usually picture.

* FunnyAneurysmMoment: The Russo-Ukrainian war is uncannily similar to the scenario and plot of II; A radical Russian minority with a Communist bent in a post-Soviet Central-Eastern Ruritania bordering on Russia wages war against weak government forces (after the latter attempt to distance themselves from their Cold War sphere of influence) and occupy government buildings. * UncannyValley:
** In Arma 2, all characters in-game show no emotions, which for some is quite creepy. See TheStoic on the main page.
** The way the in-game voices issue commands can also approach this, as each word the characters speak is used from pre-recorded fragments to form the commands, which thanks to the sometimes shoddy voice work can sound very different in tone and inflection between words. This leads to a very stilted, unnatural stop-start-stop speech pattern that can be both unnerving and Narm unintentionally hysterical.

However, the opening cutscene shows Altis' location to be south of Italy and supplementary material shows it is its own island with a fictional history tracing back to the Pheonicians. * HilariousInHindsight: ARMA III was first announced, the "TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture" criticized for depicting the NATO with a distinctly different weaponry than it was in real life. One of the biggest points of contention was the use of the fictional "MX" rifle. And then in around 2019 to 2020, the US Army is looking for a replacement model to replace the traditional AR-15 and SAW LMG armaments. The final choice in 2022 was the Sig MCX, which not only looks uncannily similar to the MX rifle, but it is chambered in 6.8mm rounds, a little short of the predicted 6.5mm of the MX. Hilarious in Hindsight was merged into a mix of both. Also, AAF is a favorite of a lot of out-of-universe people.

* AcceptableTargets:
** In-Universe and out, the [=AAF=] is no one's favorite army.
** Snipers, dear god snipers.

Deleted the lengthy rant about sniper players in public servers, it seems very disconnected from how things actually go. Majority of public servers that allow it have most everyone who's doing infantry running around with DM Rs/sniper rifles while carrying rocket launchers on their back. Literally everyone save the newest of the new knows at least somewhat how to shoot at long range and yelling at someone for simply dying as infantry in a public server is unheard of, much less the server-wide hate the editor described. (Even for griefers and hackers I haven't seen *that* level of vitriol)

thermals are not gamebreakers, since they do have way to be countered (thermal masking uniforms for one) and again, them being available or not depends on mission design. even taking all of thi into account, thermal makes peripherial vision non existen and the actual terrain completely invisible. it just makes your life easier in certain conditions.

** Infrared scopes and Enhanced Night Vision Goggles, which are night-vision goggles with an infrared mode. Never worry about looking for tracer fire or trying to spot movement in bushes ever again, all your foes are now nicely highlighted for you to light up. Slap an infrared scope on a sniper rifle or a machinegun like the SPMG (which itself will kill anyone in 1-2 shots and has long range) and you'll be slaughtering infantry with ease, both PvE and PvP becoming noticeably easier.

When CSAT returns to Tanoa [[spoiler:to test an engineered disease]] a few years later, Miller strings along a local asset to ally with the insurgents Miller fought and create a distraction for his team , offering the asset a place on his team for his performance. Miller is a dutiful and resourceful soldier who arguably saves the world twice by exposing CSAT's machinations, all the while seeing everyone who isn't in on his plans as completely expendable.CommunityNoteA joking way to call Arma 3, due the huge walking with no action community consensus is that the guy is sometimes required.[[/CommunityNote]still an asshole, though.[[/Note]
