* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: The Ita, [[spoiler: a corruption of Information Technology Administrator]]. An untouchable caste for most of the avout, the Ita are the ones to deal with the outside world on behalf of the concents, including matters of trade and commerce. The avout stereotype them as being manipulative and seeking only power by playing the mathic and sæcular worlds against one another. They wear black skullcaps and the one representative we get to know well has a long, bushy beard...[[spoiler: Fortunately by the end of the book the Ita are fully integrated into society along with the rest of the mathic world, having proven their worth in averting the alien attack.]]

* WhamLine: "'In my world,' said Zh’vaern, [[spoiler:'we call it a Faraday cage.'"]]
** Although the observant GenreSavvy reader might have been suspicious, since there were some vague clues:
*** [[spoiler: The Convox called one of the four planets decaled onto the ''Daban Urnud'' Antarct, because the decal showed a planet with an icy continent on the South Pole. Sound familiar?]]
*** [[spoiler: During the messals, Fraa Jad and Fraa Paphlagon described a theory of convergently evolving universes ("Narratives", in the words of Fraa Jad) that seems to explain the givens. Meaning that the aliens likely came from a planelt similar to Arbre, and Arbre is often uncannily like Earth.]]
*** [[spoiler: The spacecraft that landed at Orinthena is suspiciously similar to an Apollo lunar lander, though larger and with five feet.]]

* FridgeHorror: The following sentence:
--> ''The fill wiring diagram of how about came here from extramuros and from small feeder maths in the region, and how they moved from one math to another, was complicated, and not really worth explaining.''
** That's right: there's something that Creator/NealStephenson considers too complicated to explain. It's like being told that there is an upper limit to infinity.
* FridgeLogic: At one point the fraas build a Faraday Cage, to keep any signals from entering the room. A few minutes later their badges respond to a signal from outside. It is never commented on, but clearly such a signal should not have been able to enter the room.
