They're in terrible cover, they're being shot at, and no one close enough to make a difference is carrying anything that looks remotely like tools to fix Artoo. There is a time gap between the point where Artoo gets shot and the Death Star is destroyed where there would have been enough time to repair Artoo, but at that moment in time, with Stormtroops firing on them, they have more important issues than fixing a droid while no one present has any tools . If you want to keep arguing this, take it to the discussion page.

If you look at the scene after the Death Star is destroyed, before 3PO says, "They did it!", you can see Artoo fully repaired and working again. Before that, as the Death Star was exploding, the giant fleet was running for its life away from the Death Star's explosion towards Endor. So someone from the strike team probably was able to fix Artoo.

Since no one is contesting this in the discussion page, I'm putting this back. For the record, it is explictedly stated that the Empire does NOT have orbital superiority because of Ozzel's blunder, and it's highly unlikely there wasn't at least one direction that wasn't more suitable than straight at the Star Destroyers.

There is a gint Rebel fleet in orbit. I'm pretty sure somewhere ont he giant rebel fleet there is a toolbox they could use to fix Artoo in the hours after the battle was won.

It still wasn't a good idea for Han to disregard Leia's warning, even if he was the Millennium Falcon's captain. Also, how did anyone from the strike team fix Artoo ''after'' the battle if they didn't have the tools at all?

Padme does try and find out if there's another way off the planet, but is told by a long time local that there isn't. They've got little choice other than accepting Anakin's offer (he's the one who comes up with the plan they use).
