* Captain Phasma gets captured by the Han, Chewbacca and Finn and is forced at gunpoint to disable the shields of Starkiller Base.\\
'''You'd Expect''': That she would set off an alarm or contact reinforcements once they took her to the control room....or fight them herself. Or just do nothing, cross her arms and say, "No," knowing if she's dead, they're screwed.\\
'''Instead''': She complies with their demands and disables the shields, thus costing the First Order a huge military asset.

'''Instead:''' He decides she doesn't need to know, sending Finn and Rose off alone and without support. Because of how they stand out and because they're on their own, they get arrested quickly, have to rely on luck to escape, and have to settle for DJ, who betrays the Resistance and causes hundreds of deaths. Furthermore, when he finally does tell Holdo, it's hours after the fact, so she's angry, shocked, and refuses to support the plan [[SelfFulfillingProphecy because he went behind her back]].
* Meanwhile, Rey has also been captured by Kylo Ren, who has brought her before Snoke. Following this, the Supreme Leader tortures her for some time, then directs Kylo to kill her. Kylo begins manipulating Rey's lightsaber to point towards Snoke, intending to kill him. Snoke performs a mind read on Kylo.\\
'''You'd Expect''': He'd sense that Kylo intends to kill him, since Kylo is manipulating the lightsaber that is literally right next to him.\\
'''Instead''': In this case, his mind-reading seems to be some sort of abstraction, since he can only sense that [[ExactWords Kylo intends to strike his enemy down]] without a clue as to who that enemy is. He gloats about having full control over Kylo, only for Kylo to [[HalfTheManHeUsedToBe bisect him]] and (eventually) seize control over the First Order.

Added DiffLines:

* The Resistance have just destroyed the stabilizer in Starkiller Base, not only rendered the weapon completely useless but the planet is literally falling apart as a result.\\
'''You'd expect''': Colonel Datoo to do the sensible thing like everyone else and make a run for it.\\
'''Instead''': He tells a fleeing subordinate to return to his post when they all can see the planet's crust crumbling outside the window.\\

'''You'd Expect:''' Qui-Gon to immediately find an alternate means of transport, considering they are on a schedule of sorts. Tatooine has no shortage of starships passing through on their way to the core worlds that would take a few passengers and could no doubt spend the credits he has, much as Obi-Wan and Luke did with Han Solo and Chewbacca in ''Film/ANewHope''. Heck, since Qui-Gon tried to ''cheat'' Watto by using the Force, why not go to a different vendor and Force Persuade them to exchange credits for a currency Watto likes? Note that the non-canon video game adaptation (not the [[VideoGame/StarWarsEpisodeIRacer pod-racing one]]) does a ChainOfDeals sidequest to pad its length, and among the available options is the ability to Force Persuade vendors into accepting bad deals, which is what Qui-Gon could have done here. And if you're going to be a sneaky bastard, why not '''steal''' the part your spaceship needs from Watto? You're trying to cheat him ''anyway''. Failing all of that, why not simply ''sell'' the ship, then use the money to buy another ship or passage to Coruscant? The ship's hyperdrive may be damaged, but it's still a personal transport of the ''Queen of Naboo'' in otherwise excellent working order.\\

* Captain Phasma has Finn and Rose captured and plans on killing them.\\
'''You'd Expect''': She would get it over with right then and there.\\
'''Instead''': She says that just shooting them isn't good enough, and orders her troops draw out their suffering. This gives them the opportunity to escape.

'''You'd Expect:''' He would at least try to suggest it to Holdo: if she approves, it can gain official Resistance support and have a greater chance of success, and if she doesn't, it builds her trust in him because he's shown himself to be more than a trigger-happy flyboy who brushes off authority.

'''Instead:''' [[PoorCommunicationKills She does not tell them anything and when Poe objects]], she outright dismisses him due to recently being demoted. This ultimately causes a huge amount of mistrust between the two of them and leads Poe to assume that she plans to abandon the other rebels to save her own skin so he mutinies against her which, unfortunately, snowballs into Finn and Rose engaging in a disastrous mission that allows the enemy to realize their plans and [[NiceJobBreakingItHero causes the deaths of hundreds of Rebels]], forcing Holdo to sacrifice herself to give the rebels time to escape.

'''You'd Expect''': He'd sense that Kylo intends to kill him. At the very least, he would notice that the lightsaber right next to him is being pointed at him. \\
'''Instead''': He assumes that Kylo is following his orders, and gloats about having full control over him. Kylo [[HalfTheManHeUsedToBe bisects him]] and (eventually) seizes control over the First Order.\\
'''Note''': Kylo could have been using a non-verbal JediMindTrick to trick Snoke (which may have been regarded as impossible before - all the Mind Tricks we've seen so far canonically have involved vocal commands, and no-one has been seen using it on Force users before; even Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader thought they only worked on the weak-minded), but the Supreme Leader still does not realise what's going on until it's too late.

'''Instead:''' He takes matters into his own hand, and comes face to face with Luke on the battle ground. He decides to try and take him down in a lightsaber fight...only for him to pointedly ''not'' die when he successfully swings through his body. Despite what he ''just witnessed'' mere minutes ago, he's still completely shocked when this happens, as if it's anything more baffling.\\
'''The Result:''' It turns out the entire thing was a trick. Luke was trying to distract Kylo by toying with his easily angered emotions and projecting a fake image of himself onto the battlefield using the power of the Force, when the ''real'' him was actually still on the deserted planet on the edge of the galaxy. This gives the Resistance a golden opportunity to escape from being cornered, now with a new door open for regaining their foothold and finally finding a way to end the First Order. If Kylo hadn't taken the obvious hint, they could have killed the Resistance once and for all.

'''Instead:''' Windu decides to go remove Palpatine right there and then and rushes to his private quarters in the dead of night with ''two'' other Jedi Masters accompanying him. Palpatine kills those two, and while Windu does manage to gain the upper hand, Anakin rushes to the scene and ends up distracting Windu and allowing Palpatine to kill him as well. Afterwards, Palpatine speaks to the Senate and plays the entire thing as the Jedi Order being dangerous fanatics who attempted to assassinate him in order to take power. Which is a very believable interpretation of the events.
