*** There's also the fact that Po, Ping's only son (even if it's adopted), went off to fight against a lethally skilled warlord, in a city far from home. Mr Ping's breakdown near the end of the film can be quite the TearJerker for parents with their own kids who have dangerous jobs.
** For Shen's parents, they discover that their son launched a genocidal campaign against an innocent village of pandas. Due to TheChainsOfCommanding, they have to exile him, and as the Soothsayer puts it, the very act killed them.
*** And that all started because Shen reacted badly to their disapproval of his dreams of inventing the cannon, and that they weren't careful enough that Shen overheard the prophecy foretelling his doom, which spurred his actions in the first place.

them. And that all started because Shen reacted badly to their disapproval of his dreams of inventing the cannon, and that they weren't careful enough that Shen overheard the prophecy foretelling his doom, which spurred his actions in the first place.

* BittersweetEnding: Leaning a bit more towards sweet. However, even though Po has managed to save the day, he still believes that the rest of his kind is gone. And [[spoiler: though the audience knows that is not the case, and that Po's father finally knows his son is alive, they are still miles apart from each other, and the remaining pandas, while managing to repopulate, have fled in exile from the rest of the world to seek safety]].
** The fate of the villains in this movie also add to the bittersweet-ness of the ending. Yes, they were defeated, but they were more than just PunchClockVillains, and [[BigBad Shen]] himself was a TragicVillain who only wanted to achieve his dreams and make his parents proud - but failed utterly in accomplishing either.

** The final river fleet showdown is possibly inspired by ''Film/RedCliff'', where clever strategy triumphs over a bulky fleet of clumsy yet heavily armed ships.

** The blind rabbit musician who continues to play through the initial battle with wolves is most likely a reference to the battle in the rain from ''Film/{{Hero}}'', which was accompanied by a blind musician.
** Another one to the same movie is when Tigress intercepts the incoming fiery arrows to protect the others. In ''Hero'' though, [[RuleOfCool they were not fiery]].

Added DiffLines:

* VillainBall: Shen mostly averts this with the only exceptions being his [[spoiler:genocide and his KarmicDeath]]. He initially attempts to make Masters Croc, Ox, and Rhino leave peacefully (though he was clearly prepared for resistance), he avoids a confrontation with Po at all costs (as he is the one destined to defeat him), he makes back-ups of his super weapon, he's more than willing to send his mooks to do much of the work rather than putting himself at risk, and (usually) being more than willing to JustShootHim. His fighting style is also based on pragmatism with hidden weapons, misdirection, and no qualms about running if it becomes necessary. He only really starts to pick up the ball in the climax [[spoiler: when Po has rescued the Five and they, along with Masters Shifu, Croc, and Ox, are boarding his ships]].

* AllThereInTheManual: The movie's official website offers far more detailed information about all the new characters, especially Lord Shen. Lord Shen's motivations are much simpler in the movie proper, and his obsession with weapons stems from a standard villainous unquenchable lust for power that forced his parents to exile him for the atrocities he committed. This leaves out the fact that [[FreudianExcuse his parents were ashamed of his albinism and poor health, and abandoned him to the care of his soothsayer nanny]]. The context puts a very different spin on some of the exchanges between Shen and Po: the movie only shows Shen's parents looking understandably horrified at the destruction of the Panda village, and Shen only references being wronged by the exile. You can see traces of this whenever the soothsayer gives Shen a hard time and he only responds with angry words; when Po unintentionally insults her, Shen loses his temper; and Shen simply sets the soothsayer free before starting his campaign.

* FourLegsGoodTwoLegsBetter: [[InvertedTrope Inverted]]. Shifu has Tigress restrain her tiger instincts which includes making her run using an awkward two-legged jog. When Tigress sees how easily her new friends are outrunning her, however, she decides to get down on all four and finds that it suits her ''much'' better.

* RunningGag: Monkey telling a joke that ends with "... that's not a banana, that's my wife!" Apart from in his vision, no one laughs at it.
