** Clownfish do live in anemones but they also live in harems dominated by one male and one female, with a lot of non-productive males in the rest. When the dominant female dies, the dominant male undergoes a GenderBender and becomes the new dominant female. Clownfish will also reproduce with their relatives in times of emergency. This particular tidbit has raised eyebrows at the choice of clownfish for the film.[[note]]Which, according to Podcast/RiffTrax, gives a [[ParentalIncest whole new meaning to Marlin's desperation to finding Nemo]]. Yikes.[[/note]]

Yikes.[[/note]] It has been stated though, the reason for the choice of clownfish was because they don't typically travel very far from their homes.

* FunnyBackgroundEvent: There are actually quite a few. A good one is when Marlin is trying to tell his joke at the start. Nemo at first has an 'Oh, boy' expression, then an embarrassed and apologetic smile.
** A meta example occurs on the 2-disc DVD introduction: whilst Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich are talking about the included bonus features, in the background you can see John Lasseter waving and then miming diving over a rail.

* FunnyOctopus: One of Nemo's classmates is a young, somewhat nervous octopus ([[BowelBreakingBricks "Aw, you made me ink!"]]).

* DepthDeception: Dory and Marlin try to speak to a small fish while looking for directions to Sydney. Turns out, it's not small, so much as ''[[Series/FatherTed very far away]]''.

-->'''Gill:''' Eh, I've lost count. Fish aren't meant to be in a box, kid. It does things to you.

** "All drains lead to the ocean." [[spoiler:During Darla's visit, Nemo manages to get back to the ocean when Gill sends him down the dentist's spit sink.]]

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Gill. He initially comes across as cold towards Nemo when he tells him he has to get himself out of the filter tube when he initially gets stuck in it, and selfishly risks Nemo's life for his own means, almost killing him, but he's also a PapaWolf to Nemo and comes across as more like the father figure Nemo needed.

* PapaWolf: Marlin. Shark, anglerfish, jellyfish, pelican, human... He will topple the food chain to get his son back.

* AntiSmotherLoveTalk: centers around a clownfish named Marlin, who becomes severely protective of his son Nemo after losing the rest of his family in a barracuda attack. Nemo's attempts to get out from under his father's fin result in him being kidnapped by a diver and Marlin having to make a cross-ocean odyssey with a blue tang called Dory to get him back. The movie contains two instances of this:

* DVDCommentary: While the audiovisual commentary track was an interesting concept, by the time you get to the second or third behind the scenes segment interrupting the movie you can see why future films do not use the technique.
** They do it better in the Blu-Ray edition of ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory3'', where the video actually stays in the frame in a picture-in-picture.

* CallingTheOldManOut: When his father's paranoia for his well being humiliates him in front of his new friends and makes him feel even more worthless than usual, Nemo angrily looks away from Marlin and mutters [[WhamLine "I hate you."]] The entire movie is hinged on Marlin not wanting that to be the last thing his son says to him.

* TakeThatAudience: Possibly the ''weirdest'' line from the whole movie is Gurgle's statement: "The human mouth is a disgusting place", the line seems ''totally insane'' coming from him. For starters, [[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment he'd already know that]], considering how long he's resided in the dentist's office fish tank. Not to mention, he is a complete germaphobe, [[NightmareFetishist why would he be staring at something he finds wholly unpleasant?]]
