Added DiffLines:

* {{Pun}}: Joker uses two rather clever puns in the flashback scene:
** When making fun of Batman's tragic backstory, he says "Behind all the sturm and batarangs..." this is a reference to the German Romantic art movement from the 18th century, called Sturm und Drang (Storm and Desire).
** When Batman threatens to break him in two, Joker points out, he would've done it a long time ago, if he had the guts for it. He then claims "I on the other hand" seemingly refering to his own enjoyment of murder, and pulls a knife while Batman keeps an ''eye'' on Joker's ''other hand''.

* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:In a subversion of [[JokerImmunity the very trope named after him]], the Joker eventually got this treatment in the Franchise/DCAnimatedUniverse. * MadeOfExplodium: ''Everything'' explodes in this movie. In the opening battle Chuckles fired a laser at Terry, which at first melted the construction hook he was just sitting on and ''then'' it explodes. But there is nothing really to complain about since the explosions are animated ''[[AnimationBump gorgeously]]''.
* ManChild: ComicBook/TheJoker points out that for all the fear he invokes being TheCowl, Batman is really this trope:
--> "I must admit, it's sadly anti-climactic. Behind all the sturm und batarang, you're just a little boy in a play-suit, crying for mommy and daddy! It'd be funny if it weren't so pathetic... Oh, what the heck, I'll laugh anyway! ([[LaughingMad Mad Laughter]])"
** Years later the second Batman, Terry [=McGinnis=], throws the Joker's insults right back at him by pointing out that the Joker himself is also this trope as his fixation with the original Batman was childishly pathetic and, once you take away all the garish make up and fancy props, the Joker was really nothing more than a stupid, overgrown kid trying to make people laugh at a joke that wasn't all that funny to begin with, angering the Clown Prince of Crime greatly.

* ThisCannotBe: Bruce is positively stunned to see the The Joker in the flesh again after all these years.again.

* ThouShaltNotKill: Strongly implied that Batman ''was'' going to kill The Joker (as evidenced by his throwing a knife ''at his head'').
* TookALevelInBadass: The Joker, upon his return, is suddenly an even match for Batman in hand-to-hand combat. [[spoiler: Because he's using Tim Drake's body, and Tim was trained by Bruce himself.]]

** Dee Dee meeting Bruce Wayne. "Well, if it isn't old Mr Wayne. So debonair. So dapper. ''(knee him in stomach)'' So decrepit!"
** Terry as to why the Joker is NotQuiteDead. "Clone? Robot? Suspended animation due to floating around in a block of ice?"
* {{Troll}}: Holy understatement, Batman! The Joker's always been a troll, but finds himself ''badly'' outmatched when Terry returns the favor. See BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor and BerserkButton above.

** Terry makes the common mistake of dismissing the idea that a man dressed as a clown could be dangerous. He learns the hard way that underestimating Joker is a very bad idea.
** For his part Joker assumes that Terry is just a Batman-knock off, a punk who's trying to be the original and could never measure up. It isn't until their final fight that Joker realizes that Terry is a different opponent, who is willing to fight dirty, [[spoiler:turn the Joker's mind games back on him, and kill him if he had to.]]
* UnstoppableRage: Joker hit Bruce's PapaWolf instincts and BerserkButton one time too many in the flashback, as it convinced Bruce to attempt to kill him for good. [[spoiler:He didn't succeed. But Tim did. Sort of.]]
* VisualPun: In the flashback, when the Joker says, "I, on the ''other hand...''", he pulls out a knife in his left hand while distracting Batman with his right. "Eye on the other hand."
* VillainExitStageLeft: Joker is so used to this trope that, [[spoiler:when he loses control of the KillSat]], he seems to think he can just walk away (although that may also have been due to his lack of respect for Terry).

Terry must battle the original Dark Knight's [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin newly-returned]] ArchEnemy, ComicBook/TheJoker. Puzzling both Terry and Bruce is the fact that Joker seems not to have aged at all over the years. As Terry strives to solve this new mystery, he is forced to delve into his predecessor's [[DarkAndTroubledPast dark past]], unraveling the long-kept secret of what exactly split apart the Bat-Family and how the conclusion of the rivalry between The Dark Knight and The Joker ended all those years ago.

* DumbMuscle: Bonk. In the opening heist he's more focused on fighting Batman than getting what the break-in was committed for (to the point where him going off to go after Terry ends up causing the thing they were there to steal to blow up), then mouths off to ''[[TooDumbToLive the Joker]]'' because instead of doing petty robbery he's having them get high-tech machinery for something he won't tell them about. Unsurprisingly, the Joker doesn't appreciate this stupidity and kills him.
