Terry must battle the original Dark Knight's newly-returned ArchEnemy, ComicBook/TheJoker. Puzzling both Terry and Bruce is the fact that Joker seems not to have aged at all over the years. As Terry strives to solve this new mystery, he is forced to delve into his predecessor's dark past, unraveling the long-kept secret of what exactly split apart the Bat-Family and how the conclusion of the rivalry between The Dark Knight and The Joker ended all those years ago.

* DumbMuscle: Bonk. In the opening heist he's more focused on fighting Batman than getting what the break-in was committed for (to the point where him going off to go after Terry ends up causing the thing they were there to steal to blow up), then mouths off to the Joker because instead of doing petty robbery he's having them get high-tech machinery for something he won't tell them about. Unsurprisingly, the Joker doesn't appreciate this stupidity and kills him.

* NeverForgottenSkill: Bruce Wayne may have been out of being Batman for years, but a number of his skills were never forgotten. .

In the uncut version, he proves to be just as capable with a Batarang as he was before.
-->Bruce: Still got it.

* NotQuiteDead: After Joker attacks Bruce at Wayne Manor, Terry comes to find the house a wreck, and Bruce slumped over the Batcomputer with the telltale rictus grin of Joker venom. As Terry checks his pulse and heartbeat, Bruce springs back to life long enough to tell Terry to fetch and administer the antitoxin, saving his life.

** The Joker's transformation is a shout-out to at least one film version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: it's accomplished with subtle misdirection and a clever fade.

* AnimationBump: The movie was done by Creator/Entertainment, one of the best animation studios in Japan, and the results shine through. In the DVDCommentary, the creators will occasionally just pause to watch the show, Creator/BruceTimm and the other Franchise/DCAU regulars being unaccustomed to that kind of quality for most of their projects.

* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:In a subversion of the very trope named after him, the Joker eventually got this treatment in the Franchise/DCAU. Yes, having proven himself as much of a survivor as his counterpart in the comics, every bit the "no one" in NoOneCouldSurviveThat, this movie took the big leap and put him down once and for all - killing him twice; first his body was destroyed and buried deep within Arkham Asylum in flashback, then the chip containing a copy of his DNA and memories was burned out, just to make sure he won't be coming back.]]
