The site itself has been running since late 2008, but has only started to become widespread and popular from 2011 onward. To give an indication of how young it is compared to the existing behemoth FanFictionDotNet, [=AO3=] contains just over 500,000 stories in total. The ''Franchise/HarryPotter'' fandom on FFN has over 600,000 on its own. The rise in popularity has been helped along by the rise of {{Tumblr}} as both sites share a similar fandom mentality and outlook, as well as by [=AO3=] being the official hosting site or encouraged posting site for a few popular fanfic fests and events such as Yuletide.

The most popular fandoms on the site at the moment include ''Harry Potter'', ''Webcomic/{{Homestuck}}'', ''Series/{{Supernatural}}'', ''Franchise/StargateVerse'', Creator/MarvelComics & ''ComicBook/TheAvengers'', ''Series/{{Sherlock}}'', Franchise/TheDCU and Jossverse fandoms like ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'' and ''Series/{{Angel}}''.
