With a light touch of PostModernism, the comic has a sizable amount of self-referential humor, GenreSavvy characters, and quite a few Lampshade lampshaded, subverted, invoked, and roundly mocked tropes. It starts out following the adventures of a half-elven mage seeking ultimate arcane power, though as other main characters join up it quickly becomes evident that there is much more going on behind the scenes. The comic underwent slow onset CerebusSyndrome, but still retained many of its humorous elements well into the series.

* FunnyOctopus: One of the secondary characters has a pet miniature tentacle monster, Genre Savvily named Rape-kun. Despite the name, he is completely harmless, and oddly cute. It's mentioned that the owner doesn't have the password to unlock Rape-kun's "Adult Mode". Make of that what you will.

They're both GenreSavvy enough to expect they'll see him again, though.

-->Meji: So, um... you're Jon's long lost, estranged sister, who's been turned into an emotionless magic ninja assassin by some secret order of monks hidden in the mountains...
-->Sara: ... yes.
-->Beat (beat)
-->Meji: That's... like, really, kinda freaking stupid, if you don't mind me saying. And I thought your brother's whole "hitman with a troubled past and a heart of gold" bit was bad.
-->Ellis: Yeah, and this is coming from a magic using, half elven heiress with unusual hair and eye colours, and a talking animal companion... so that' really saying something there.
