** Sarah is outwardly Joyce's polar opposite given her self-proclaimed misanthropy and sour outlook. Yet she shares a strong connection to Joyce (her "little sis") and arguably is motivated [[IJustWantToBeLoved by many of the same things she is.]] She is even shown entering her dorm room excitedly much the same way that Joyce did, and also has faced something traumatic in her first semester. Further adding to this dynamic is Joyce's unexpected [[HiddenDepths ability to deliver clever comebacks and quips]] [[http://www.dumbingofage.com/2012/comic/book-2/05-saturdays-all-right-for-slighting/bonecity/ in recent comics.]]

* MaleGaze / FemaleGaze / EatingTheEyeCandy: Pretty common throughout the strip. It is ''College'', after all.

* IncompatibleOrientation: Amber and Ethan. And now Joyce and Ethan.
** And now [[spoiler:[[UnluckyChildhoodFriend Becky and Joyce]]]], due to the former misreading the latter's signals.

* IncompatibleOrientation: IncompatibleOrientation:
**
Amber and Ethan. And now It's a long tale but ended with them being good, if a bit awkward, friends.
**
Joyce and Ethan.
Ethan as a really strange relationship.
** And now [[spoiler:[[UnluckyChildhoodFriend Becky and Joyce]]]], due to the former misreading the latter's signals.

** This makes sense when we learn just how black-and-white the boundaries of gender were in their community, and how Becky would likely be seen as needing to remain surrounded by other Christians to avoid her "straying".

** It took Danny a while, but accepting his sexuality and helping Amber through some of her worst moments means he has lost his more skittish mannerism and gained maturity. It's most noticeable when seeing him with Joe as they've practically swapped roles. Joe is much more introspective and Danny more sure of himself.

** Ruth has shown signs of this too if her phone conversations and crushed reaction after are any indication. [[spoiler:Not to mention the disastrous results of her Tsundere behavior around Billie, which further suggests she may have had an abusive home life.]]
*** It turns out that [[spoiler:her parents were killed by a drunk driver, and her attempt to cure her depression by drinking ironically made her more depressed and even more of an alcoholic, and her grandfather who is now raising her and her brother is an emotionally abusive monster]].
** Joe might count - his parents are divorced at the very least (and he mentions that they "yell a lot" when Joyce suggests a ParentTrapPlot), though there hasn't been any elaboration yet.

** Danny's interactions with Ethan have been surprisingly flirty and a few readers have pointed out Danny has never been confirmed to be heterosexual. When Amber asked him if he was closeted, since her gaydar was terrible, he confirmed he liked girls but not that he was straight. He's basically confirmed as bisexual in [[http://www.dumbingofage.com/2014/comic/book-4/04-the-whiteboard-dong-bandit/thoughts/ this strip.]]
*** [[http://www.dumbingofage.com/2015/comic/book-5/03-the-butterflies-fly-away/tall/ Also this.]] (alt text)

** Blaine O'Malley. His appearance in DOA is much more direct than in Shortpacked, his abuse is given more onscreen development, he kidnaps Danny to lure his daughter out, and his emotional abuse of his wife is upgraded to both emotional and physical.
** Ross Macintyre. In Joyce & Walky, while he looked down on the couple dancing and engaging in pre-marital sex, as well as Becky being friends with Joyce, the worst he ever did was voice these opinions. Here he's willing to do whatever he can to get his way, [[spoiler:[[http://www.dumbingofage.com/2015/comic/book-6/01-to-those-whod-ground-me/deceptress/ including bringing a gun to a college campus]]]].
** Clint. In his only appearance in ''Shortpacked'', he beat up a guy for complaining about G.I. Joe toys. Here, he's emotionally and verbally abusive towards Ruth.

** PlayedWith in regards to Blaine O'Malley. On the one hand his appearance in DOA is much more direct than in Shortpacked, his abuse is given more onscreen development, he kidnaps Danny to lure his daughter out, and his emotional abuse of his wife is upgraded to both emotional and physical. On the other hand due to the comic's realism, Blaine's ties to organized crime are excised.

* PassiveAggressiveKombat: Carol acts very antagonistic towards Becky when she comes to the Brown's house, leading to a full-blown Kombat with Becky during diner, in which Hank feels very incomfortable and is unable to stop his wife. Joyce is so furious that she gives a DeathGlare to her mother.

** Clint, Ruth's (maternal) grandfather and guardian. He constantly insults her and her dead father, claiming she's too much like him, emotionally abuses her and her brother Howard, and even brings Howard along to school with him to subtly tell her that even though she is old enough to cut ties with him, Howard is not, and he would take her "betrayal" out on him.
