WMG: The Hearth's Warming Eve play is a BroadStrokes retelling of real events.
Generally speaking, the sequence of events it shows is right and the characters existed with roughly the same personalities they have in the play, but things have generally been simplified over time. In reality, the leaders would have been less unreasonable than portrayed, especially Puddinghead: she was in all likelihood still... eccentric, but not the total loon of the play, otherwise she would never have managed to become the leader of a nation. The journeys were in all likelihood full-scale migrations rather than two-pony expeditions. Finally, the ending of the actual event was in all likelihood nowhere as neat as in the play -- there would still have been the hardships of building a new nation from scratch, and there were likely a lot of holdouts from the old society who didnít want to give up power or mingle with the other tribes. The reason this didnít show up in the play would be because a) it would overly complicate things and get in the way of the moral -- history textbooks serve fine for the actual version -- and b) the story itself has gotten a bit blurred and oversimplified over a thousand plus years of telling and retelling.

** According to Literature/TheJournalOfTheTwoSisters, they were both mares, and the characters in the actual episode also seemed to conceptualize them as such. However, Literature/PrincessCelestiaAndTheSummerOfRoyalWaves has Clover as a stallion. Her being a mare seems like the likeliest option at the moment.

He test it on himself, but it worked too well and he become a she more time than expected. That make the female starswirl toy make a little sense.

* According to The Journal of the Two Sisters (which has conflicted with show canon on occasion, so take this with a grain of salt), Commander Hurricane was a stallion, whereas the other five founders were mares.

mares. Then again, Literature/PrincessCelestiaAndTheSummerOfRoyalWaves also has Clover as a guy.

Some Cracked.com reader on the [=FiM=] staff will decide that the multiple reference name is too good to pass up, with or without permission from Amy Keating Rogers. It happened with Pokemon, why not MLP? Further support for this theory is that Soarin' is sooooo gorgeous/man-pretty, and his hairstyle's similar to Soren Bowie's, but slightly bigger, and blue.

* So is this guess confirmed yet? In "On Your Marks" during the Cutie Mark Crusaders' search for problems to solve, we see her very clearly being a central figure, standing in an office while other ponies walk up to her with documents that she reviews and signs before they leave.
* On the other hoof, she's probably not the only figure in Ponyville's government. Along with the other ponies mentioned in the example above from the show itself, the comics also give her a council and a small army of bureaucrats she has to manage.

* Call this one jossed. Hasbro is using the "Mayor Mare" name for its licenses.
